2013-14 Annual Report - Saint Thomas Academy
Saber Saint Thomas Academy Annual Report Issue | Fall 2014 Cover Story Our 2014 Honorees William J. Culbertson, Honorary Alumnus 2014 Edward G. Hames Alumni Honors Award Michael V. Ciresi ’64 2014 Opus Sancti Thomae Award From the Headmaster Celebrating the generosity of our community E very Thanksgiving, my grandfather, Sylvester Turbes, started our celebration with a prayer written by Benjamin Franklin. In the prayer, Franklin recalled a litany of gifts, which he concluded with the phrase, “Good God, I thank Thee.” By reading the prayer every year in his distinctive voice and with a deliberate, purposeful cadence, my grandfather not only left me with an indelible memory, but also taught me an important lesson about gratitude. It is a lesson that stays with me to this day, and one that has been foremost in my mind for the last few months. Every day, I am grateful for Saint Thomas Academy, its community, friends and benefactors. The welcome and support you have given me in my first months as Headmaster leaves me humbled and appreciative beyond what words can convey. In this issue of the Saber, we celebrate the contributions of two men who represent the Academy and its mission impeccably in their lives. Michael Ciresi ’64, this year’s recipient of the Opus Sancti Thomae Award, has committed his life to the pursuit of justice and the common good. Whether his service has come in a courtroom, the community or as an ardent supporter of the Academy, Mike Ciresi has had a lasting impact on the community and world around us. The Edward G. Hames Alumni Honors Award is bestowed upon a man well known to generations of Cadets, William Culbertson (honorary alumnus, Class of 2010). In his 46 years of service to the Academy community, “Mr. Culbertson” has influenced and guided thousands of young men, leaving lasting impressions about the importance of respect, kindness and service. Both men represent the best of our community, and it is a privilege to recognize them. This issue also recognizes those in our community who have contributed financially to the Academy in the last year, from those offering their first gift to those adding to a long history of giving. Whether we are acknowledging the first gifts from Stu Whitney ’13 and David Zevnik ’13, or the legacy gift of Vince Flynn ’84, it is important for our community to see how many of those among us have supported the ongoing mission of our school, and have helped strengthen it for generations to come. The Academy is, always has been, and always will be, dependent upon the generosity of our community. Every gift to the Aquinas Fund, our annual fund, helps close the gap we face each year between tuition revenue and the cost of operating the school. To keep tuition lower than the total cost of educating a Cadet, to offer almost $3 million in financial assistance and to ultimately balance our budget, we rely on gifts of every size from our families, alumni and extended community. At the same time, we also have called upon you, our community, to invest in the future of our school and to build upon the legacy we have inherited. Through your gifts to the Defining Moment campaign, you are securing the future of the Academy. On behalf of the Saint Thomas Academy faculty, staff, administration, students and parents, I offer you our deepest thanks. For this institution we love and for the gift of community we are blessed to share, “Good God, I thank Thee.” Peace, Matthew C. He wanted to go to public high school, but his father wouldn’t hear of it. “It was always a given that I would go to the Academy, but even more so after my mother died when I was in 7th grade,” he said. “My father felt I needed the structure offered by the Academy.” Looking back, Ciresi says he owes his father for that and much more. “My father was probably the most cadets.com ncti Thomae Award 2014 Opus Sancti Thomae Award 2014 Opus San “ A young lawyer prepping for a case. Without him, I don’t know where I’d be today.” At the Academy, Ciresi thrived, especially as an athlete in football and hockey. But most important was the influence of his teachers, men like Jack Campbell, Sy Turbes, Skip McMahon, George Langeland, Father Jack Lee and George Schnell. “The faculty was enormously capable and talented. They were interested in each and every one of us,” said Ciresi, who went on to St. Thomas College and the University of Minnesota Law School. “I was not a great student at the Academy and I could get by without working too hard. But I learned so much from those men, especially the importance of giving back and contributing to the common good.” In gratitude, Ciresi has been a steadfast supporter of the Academy. Besides serving on the Board of Trustees and speaking to students at many Career Days, he established the Samuel V. Ciresi Scholarship fund in his father’s name to promote racial diversity. In 2012, he and his wife Ann made a lead gift to the Defining Moment capital campaign, and he is a member of STA’s Heritage Society. I’ve known Mike Ciresi for years. I’ve always been proud to say that he went to Saint Thomas Academy as I did. I’m even more proud to know that Mike has been given the highest award that Saint Thomas Academy gives for his great service in the field of law, especially in as much as his litigation has brought justice to so many people in the world, and here in our country and in our state and city who clearly needed it. Mike has led the law firm of Robins, Kaplan, Miller, & Ciresi in Minneapolis for a number of years now. Mike, along with his partners, set up the Robins, Kaplan, Miller, & Ciresi Foundation for Children and I’ve been privileged to be a member of that foundation board. Over the past 15 years, we’ve given a great deal of money, especially for education reform for all children and particularly for poor children. Mike and Ann Ciresi have together embraced a very wide range of important causes throughout the Twin Cities area and beyond. Saint Thomas Academy has really done a great thing in giving him its highest honor, the Opus Sancti Thomae Award. Father Michael O’Connell ’59, recipient of the 2005 Opus Sancti Thomae Award M ike Ciresi’s lifelong dedication to the common good has played out in many ways beyond his legal career and support of STA. He has also dedicated countless hours outside of the practice of law — as he loves to talk about — to the 'common good.' It was never ‘I’m-the-teacher-and-you’re-not.’ I always tried to emulate how he treated students throughout my career.” Culbertson’s good grades at St. Agnes earned him a scholarship at St. Thomas College, where he studied secondary education and majored in history with a minor in Spanish while working weekends and summers for Applebaum’s grocery stores. Right out of college he was hired at St. Bernard’s High School in St. Paul, where he taught history and Spanish, helped out with the football team and was an assistant basketball coach. “I wasn’t a big athlete in high school, but I knew those games. I learned about coaching on the job,” he said. In contrast, he knew nothing about track as St. Agnes didn’t offer the sport, but when the St. Bernard’s track coach asked him to be his assistant, he figured, why not? “I got a bunch of books about track and field at the library and immersed myself in them,” he recalled. “The next thing I knew, the track coach was fired and they asked me to take the job. By that August, he had no teaching job prospects and had resigned himself to go back to Applebaum’s full-time. Then the phone rang. It was Gerry Brown ’58, at that time the track coach at Saint Thomas Academy, who knew Culbertson from track meets with St. Bernard’s. “He told me there was a social studies opening at the Academy and they also needed an assistant track coach, and would I be interested,” Culbertson recalled. “I couldn’t believe it.” In the interviews that followed, he recalls then-assistant headmaster Bill Ridley asking if he knew anything about wrestling, because they needed a new head wrestling coach. “I told him I didn’t know a thing about wrestling,” Culbertson recounted with Mary Jo and Bill Culbertson a smile. “Ridley quipped, ‘the last guy didn’t either.’” What Culbertson did know was how to motivate kids and how to manage the many facets of sports coaching, skills he put to use in the Academy’s athletic programs over the decades. ” His career as an STA coach included five years with the wrestling team, and 30 years with the track and field team, which “The Academy of the late 1960s and early 70s won three state championships during his tenure. There was a ‘change’ in him – he instantly became more engaged, enthused, confident, positive, helpful, calm, smiley and resourceful every day he completed camp. Perhaps it is due to the caliber and commitment of staff and teachers, the facilities, the rich and engaging content of what he was learning and how he was taught. It was as if my son received an internal validation in his busy, inquisitive, information-seeking mind that there is this wonderful place for him to soak up the deep knowledge he seeks in a nurturing, structured, state-ofthe-art environment. On August 7, 2014, Headmaster Matthew Mohs ’90 received this e-mail from classmate John Matthews ’90. “I attended Officer Scott’s funeral yesterday as part of a group of officers from the Sioux Falls Police Department in South Dakota. When I drove past THE Academy yesterday, my emotions ran very deep when I saw a fine group of young Cadets paying their respects to Officer Patrick. I have attended so many police funerals that often times I feel hardened and find it difficult to feel the emotions that I used to. To say the least, when I came to that corner, I was overwhelmed inside and out. It meant a lot to every one of the police officers that drove past them. One thought that passed through my mind yesterday, amongst others: During a trying time, I was able to see what I was in the past and whom I’ve become today just because a group of fine young men showed up to pay their respects and display the pride STA is known for. By the odds from our graduating class, I am sure one of those young men one day will wear the badge and gun, and carry on the values from STA into a world that needs them. Not only did their support help the family of Officer Patrick and the law enforcement community, but it helped me deeply as well.” Officer John Matthews ’90 Sioux Falls Police Department As the school year began, students and faculty wanted to finds ways to raise money for the Officer Patrick Memorial Fund. T-shirts specifically designed for the fund were sold at school and worn on an out-of-uniform day. Proceeds from the annual Disco Mixer were also donated to the fund. These two efforts by the STA students raised $15,000 for the Patrick family. A check was presented to the family at the September 19 football game. cadets.com STA Evans receives Leading with Faith Award Robley Evans, Saint Thomas Academy’s director of business affairs, was among eight business leaders honored at The Catholic Spirit’s 2014 Leading with Faith Awards luncheon in August. First Teaching Job Teaching assistant at Iowa State University Hobby “Fixing up houses — my husband and I have just finished our first total redo of a foreclosure we purchased three years ago (we work slowly).” Fact of Interest “As my students know from last year, I have a cool pet tarantula, Leggs. She will be visiting my class again during Halloween time.” A Favorite Teaching Moment “At St. Joe’s in Kenosha, WI, I taught 7th grade life science. I had this exceedingly energetic student, Matt. I had planned a lab on planarian regeneration, which involved slicing a small planarian in half with a scalpel. I put Matt in a group with my three top female students to keep him under control. Of course, within five minutes after lab instructions I heard one of the girls yell, ‘Mrs. Nead, Matt cut our planarian into eight pieces!’ Sure enough, there were eight small brown specks in the petri dish. I did not think they would survive but we stored them for the weekend with the rest. Monday morning I could hear Matt approaching the flight of steps next to my room. He was stomping down the steps and I could hear him say, ‘Get out of my way — I have to check on my planaria!’ He ran through my door, pushed through a group of students, flung open the closet door, and pulled his petri dish from the shelf. He took a moment to count and then very proudly exclaimed, ‘Mrs. Nead, I have five planarian pieces still alive!’ Of course, by then the girls came in and complained about how Matt broke the rules of running and pushing in the hall but I was so pleased that he was so excited about his lab!” In August, 35 students participated in the Twin Cities Muckfest to help raise funds to support the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Favorite Experience “My senior year in college I had an instructor, Dr. Peters, who spent his summers and holidays working for Boeing in St. Louis. He would joke that he made his real money in the summer and just taught during the year for fun. He was always bringing into calculus class what he was doing at work — which was mostly designing jets. Once he tried to show us how to use surface integrals to calculate wind flow over a jet. We did not understand but it was nice to see that math is really used in the real world.” Why I teach at STA “I like to teach in an environment that values work ethic as much as content knowledge, where students learn that serving God with the knowledge they acquire is more important than serving themselves. And, I get to work down the hall from Mr. Weber, who always has a smile!” Family Husband Bryan of 27 years. More than 2,000 benefactors generously gave in support of the mission of Saint Thomas Academy and our Cadets. Thank you! Every day your gifts make a difference in the time-tested education model and experience we are able to provide our students. You are investing in our young men. All 625 of them! It is a sound investment and one that will have returns that cannot be quantified. The return on investment is evident by the 129-year history of young men who have graduated from the Academy. You are indeed paying it forward. We strive to be good stewards of the generosity that’s directed to Saint Thomas Academy. We are blessed by those in this report who have chosen to assist in advancing the mission of Saint Thomas Academy. Good stewardship means we continually look to keep expenses in check and contain costs wherever possible. We do this without sacrificing the excellent quality of education and high David Hottinger ’85 quality facilities that are provided to our students. We thank you and hope to once again have your support this year and for years to come. In this report you will notice a change to the names and dollar values of our giving clubs. The foundation of our giving clubs is now the Academy Associates. We welcome and recognize all gifts up to $999 in this club. The remaining levels include Headmaster’s Council, John Ireland Society, Aquinas Round Table and Standard Bearers. As we look to the future and building the Saint Thomas Academy giving community, there will be Academy-related events for all of our benefactors at any level. There will also be specific communication, invitations and events for those in the Headmaster’s Council and above. During my first seven months as Director of Institutional Advancement I have been welcomed by so many within this community. Thanks for allowing me to visit and share the great and inspiring things that are happening at Saint Thomas Academy. Thanks also for listening about the needs of our school and items that are in the works. Speaking of needs, we were able to fill one in August. Saint Thomas Academy added Mike Barcelow ’64 to the team as Director of Major and Planned Gifts. Mike brings a passion for the Academy, along with business and entrepreneurial talents to our group. Please welcome Mike to the community with the same friendliness you did with me. We have an exciting year ahead of us. We have the leadership and vision of Matt Mohs ’90, the first graduate of STA to lead the school. We have our Saint Thomas Academy community that continues to strengthen, grow and promote our great school. Most importantly we have our Cadets — the primary reason to give and the direct beneficiaries of your gracious support. We will strive to continually improve as an organization and prepare our young men to go forth and make the world a better place. 16 | SABER Fall 2014 cadets.com Saint Thomas Academy | 2013-14 Annual Report 2013-2014 Financial Highlights Operating Fund Overview INCOME July 1, 2013 through June 30, 2014 Tuition and Fees Gifts Revenue by Source Gifts Revenue by Source income 3% 4%3% 4% n Student Tuition, Net — $9,032,790 n Army ROTC Reimbursement — $184,395 n A quinas Annual Fund — $1,166,175 Includes Auction n n Other — $382,623 n E ndowment Earnings Transfer — (3,129,325) Student Tution, Net 9,032,790 Athletic Events 8% 8% 10% 10% 1% 1% Auxiliary Enterprises — $464,093 $12,162,115 Financial Aid 30,438 Army ROTC Reimbursement 74% 74% 1,166,175 Auxiliary Enterprises 464,093 Other382,623 Endowment Transfer 1,037,074 TOTAL INCOME $12,267,150 $1,037,074 Total$12,267,150 EXPENSES General Instruction Expenses Gifts Revenue by Type Gifts Revenue by Type n General Instruction — n G eneral Office and $4,856,522 n Plant Operation — $1,354,368 n Employee Benefits — $1,460,358 n Auxiliary Enterprises — $381,855 n S tudent Activities and Athletics — $939,676 n Other — $427,809 n Interest Expense — $353,455 n Debt Principal Payments — $220,200 cadets.com $12,267,150 $ 4,856,522 General Office and Administration 2% 3% 3%2% 3% 3% Administration — $2,267,907 Total 184,395 Aquinas Annual Fund 3% 3% 8% 8% 40% 40% 12% 12% 11% 11% 18% 18% 2,267,907 Plant Operation 1,354,368 Employee Benefits 1,460,358 Auxiliary Enterprises 381,855 Student Activities and Athletics 939,676 Other Expenses 427,809 Interest Expense 358,455 Debt Principal Payments 220,200 TOTAL EXPENSES $12,267,150 Deficit $ Does not include restricted gifts, capital campaign gifts or other capital funds.
