Arriving in Porto...
The city where friendly locals will take you by hand to your closest destination, where even Troika could not take out our smile
and joy of living day by day...
Metro Metro closes at 1am. The last carriage from the airport
leaves at 00:36. The closest station is São Bento, but if you´re
coming late, Trindade it´s you best option.
Bus&Train Very often to main locations, Rede Expressos
(bus)* and Cp (trains)* offers a wide variety of options. We prefer Bus, since most of them have Wifi on board and are cheaper.
3M it´s your night bus, every 30 minutes, and 601 and 602 it´s
your day buses. Stops in Cordoaria and it´s cheaper than metro.
Taxi: Taxis from airport are around 20 euros, so pay attention
to the taxi meter and always ask for a receipt.
Welcome to The Poets Inn!

1. walking
The openness to the wine trade
has left Porto a rich heritage,
strong character and shabby elegance. For this reason the historic centre, with its medieval tenements, baroque churches and
art nouveau shops, was designated a Unesco world heritage site
in 1996.
TORRE DOS CLÉRIGOS (1) From the Inn, immediate-
ly you can find the most known tower of Porto, Torre dos Clérigos, a baroque temple designed by the Italian
architect Nicolau Nazoni, who now rests inside
of the church. This tower has become the symbol
of the city, proud and made of stone. One of the
first Portuguese movies was filmed here, when
two climbers went to the top of the tower to have
tea. Thus the movie “Tea in the clouds” was born
in the year 1917.
SHOPPING
St. Catarina street is the main commercial
street were you can find all the big store departments. Here you
can feel the local crowd, street performers, and food vendors.
Tucked in the beginning of the street you can visit Café Majestic (6). Probably the most famous cafe in Porto decorated
in an art nouveau style, was the stage of several meetings of the
intellectuals in the city’s past. Close by you can also find several
good examples of the Portuguese painted tiles in two nearby
churches, Capela das Almas (7) and Igreja de Santo Ildefonso. Don’t forget to step inside Porto’s oldest market, Mercado do Bolhão (8), with the traditional vendors offering,
fruit, vegetables, meat, herb teas, everything fresh. Struggling to
be alive, this market will probably be converted into something
trendy. Around it you will find the oldest grocery stores in Porto
filled with cheese smoked meats, canned sardines, dried fruits
and all the types of chorizo. One of them is Pérola do Bolhão
(9) with its front decorated with art nouveau tiles.
VINHO DO PORTO Produced ex-
TIP // Casa Oriental (10) stands for the best grocery shop
around, fresh fruits and everything you will need to cook in
our kitchen. Check its unique outdoor handpainted. It´s right
around the corner.
CASA DA MÚSICA This meteorite looka-like concert hall, designed by the Dutch
architect Rem Koolhaas, landed in Porto
in 2001, for the European Cultural Capital
events and became a landmark in the music scene, with its beautiful auditoriums.
Houses the Porto National Orchestra, but
visitors can expect to enjoy also jazz, fado,
electronic and dance music. Take some
time to visit the top floor restaurant, the
skylight is impressive.
LIVRARIA LELLO (2) After climbing the tower
visit to one of the most beautiful bookshops in the world
- Lello & Irmão - opened in the year 1906. The facade is
decorated in Art Nouveau, with some features of the Gothic Revival, and inside you can find numerous busts of the
greatest Portuguese writers who lived till that time.
BAROQUE The infatuation with the baroque style in Porto
can still be found in other important stops like the São Bento
train station, or the Sé Church (3) and the Church of Santa
Clara who should be on your way to cross the most famous
bridge of Porto, the D. Luis Bridge (4) , were you can have
breathtaking views over the world heritage city. After this stop
follow down to the river, to the other side, Gaia, were you can
visit the port wine cellars to find out what’s you favourite type
of port, or before that just get lost in the narrow streets of the
old Ribeira.
TIP // Several organized walking tours are made for you to discover Caminhos do Romântico, where you can understand all
the contradictions of the Romantic period, between the rural
and the bourgeois world, the workers and the royalty.
The water is always cold, but the locals will still
try the waves on the Atlantic Sea on the hot summer days. The
closest beaches are the ones in Foz and Matosinhos. Both of
them have several cafés along the coast for cold drinks under
the hot sun. Matosinhos beach has been the most popular one
for surfers. You can easily rent a surfing board and a suit to try
the waves here. But if you wish to spend an entire day sunbathing we recommend the beaches placed more on the south to
the city. Some beaches in Gaia and nearby city Espinho. Just
catch a train in São Bento Train Station (11) and exit at Granja,
Aguda or Miramar, and enjoy the long quiet sandy beaches.

clusively in the Douro Valley - the oldest
wine region in the world and also UNESCO world heritage site- , with an addition of a grape spirit known as aguardente to stop fermentation, stored and
aged in barrels. Got his name from our
city mouth, the seaport city, where much
of the product was sold or exported.
Vinho do Porto is commonly
served after meals as a dessert wine in English-speaking
countries, as our love for wine
and regular beer left this sweet
wine behind. From red to
white, Tawny or Vintage, dry
or semi-dry, several qualities
makes it a special fortified
wine.
2. eating
The traditional plate in Porto is the
tripe and bean stew - Tripas à moda
do Porto - you can find it in the restaurants with the most traditional cuisine. Places like Solar do Moinho de Vento (12)
or the restaurant Tasquinha (13). Buraco (14), open for 40
years is also a favourite place for the people looking for more
traditional and familiar plates. Only open during the week, always had a very loyal clientele. Another plate that established
itself as one of the most important recipes from Porto is the
Francesinha. A very serious relationship between the people of
Porto and this plate exists, and always a heated debate happens
when announcing ones favourite place to eat it. The most popular place nowadays is Café Santiago (15), but others like Capa
Negra, or Cervejaria Galiza can be good places to try this special dish. Another important stop would be Casa Guedes (16),
were you will find one of the best roasted pig leg sandwiches ,
and were you can try several Portuguese delicacies from cheese,
to different types of smoked meat, and wine, good cheap wine.
To eat fresh grilled fish head up to Matosinhos, were all the restaurants have access to the freshest fish in the city.
sweet bytes, it’s time to start going to the heavy stuff: Tascas.
Porto has a wide tradition in this old bars, where locals go to
a quick snack, which can go from pica-pau (pork fried pieces), torresmos (pork skin) or presunto (a simple ham plate). At
Conga (20), you can try bifanas, cooked bits of pork in a spicy
sauce, served in bread. Have it with some beer. Next to it you
also have the famous Pedro dos Frangos(21), the place for
chicken piripiri, or even some more brave choices like chicken
rice with blood.
To finish this food tour, you can pay a visit to snack bar Gazela* (22). What made this place popular is it’s hot dog, which
is toasted, and cutted into little pieces, a perfect snack for a cold
bear. You will find lots of people there, grabbing a quick bite
before attending a play at the São João* National Theatre (23)
The night in Porto changes dramatically at weekends. But during the week you
can always find the city students at the cafe Piolho (24), open
always till 3am. Another place famous for cheap beer is cafe 77
(25), were a small bear costs only €0.50. But leaving the student
crowd, one should try Café Candelabro* (26) or Victoria
SIZA VIEIRA Siza Vieira is probably the
most famous Portuguese architect and
many come to this city to visit some of
his work. You could begin to visit the Architecture School* designed by him.
The social housing project known has
Casas da Bouça or the contemporary
art museum Serralves are some of his
highlights. In the city of Leça you will
find two of his most famous projects.
Piscinas das Marés are the public
swimming pools, built on the rocks on
the beach and filled with the sea’s water,
and Casa de Chá, another house built
on the rocks, a restaurant and cafe. He
recently renewed the main square of the
city - Aliados - and in
the local metro station
São Bento* you can find
tiles with his own drawings.
PASTELARIAS & TASCAS If you are looking for a quick bite
to move on your journey, there are several places that will feed
your need of discovering new flavours on the go. Pastries (Pastelarias) in Porto are stunning, as they offer quite a big variety. In
almost any street in downtown you will find one were you can
find dozens of sweets originated in old convents kitchens. Start
at Padaria Ribeiro (17). It’s small but always packed with locals getting in just to pick up bags full of cookies, salty pastries
or sweets. Everything is recommended here so choose wisely.
Next to it you can find Leitaria do Paço (18), a small café that
almost only makes one type of pastry, éclairs. They have perfected the french pastry into dozens of different variations but
always maintaining the home made cream that fills them. Confeitaria do Bolhão (19), in an art nouveau decoration, it´s another must to in this journey. If at one point you are tired of
(27) for a glass of wine in the beginning of the night. After that,
Café aut lait (28) or one of the other popular bars on the Galerias de Paris street are stops before going do the club Plano
B* (29). Open till 8am is the most popular place for electronic
music. If it’s not your music type, don’t worry, they have another
dance floor with alternative sound.
Fundamental to make Porto achieve international
recognition in the museum scene, Serralves Art Museum*
worths a one day visit. Opened in 1999 in order to endow Porto
with a space dedicated to contemporary art, the symbolic startdate for the collection was 1968. Everything in this Museum
- from the building itself to the furniture - was designed by the
renowned architect Álvaro Siza Vieira. The local Soho is Rua
Miguel Bombarda* (30), that normally held openings at one
saturday per month. Museu Soares dos Reis*, founded in
1833, is Portugal’s first national museum, displays one of the
finest collections of Portuguese art, in particular a gallery from
António Soares dos Reis, the sculptor after whom the museum
is named. Check closer O desterrado, a naturalistic sculpture,
who many consider a self-portrait predicting his suicide in 1889.
MANUEL DE OLIVEIRA Still releasing
movies almost every year, making him
the oldest director alive, spanneing from
the silent era to the digital age, Manuel
de Oliveira work is itself the story of contemporary Portugal. Perhaps
one of the most famous of his
works is Aniki-Bóbó*, a
movie from 1932, were
we can still see the idyllic life in Porto next to
the river.

VANDOMA The local flea market where
mainly locals and students sell their stock
of everything you can imagine. Held every saturday morning, has a fantastic vibe
that pictures widely what Porto is today:
a struggle between the picturesque and
the modern, the decadent and eclectic.
WEATHER* In the Winter, cool and rainy interludes interrupts very often our Mediterranean climate. Porto is
one of the wettest cities of Europe. However, long periods with mild temperatures and sunny days are frequent
even during the rainiest months.

years they beat Benfica hegemony, and became the portuguese team
with more titles.

SÃO JOÃO Considered one of the 10 biggest street parties in the world, São João it´s
one of those events that you have to visit
at least once in your lifetime. Plastic hammers, smelly leeks, fireworks, grilled sardines, paper balloons lighten up all night,
street bonfires, beer and wine in every corner, and massive amount of people drifting
around until the sunrise.
