Steps for Success
Powerful Local Women Share How They Made It to the Top
Dr. Diane Meyer
Dentistry for the Health Conscious
Dr. Jasmine Singh
Owner of Chic Med Spa
When Dr. Diane Meyer was young, she lacked selfesteem and confidence. Her parents weren’t encouraging,
laughing when she told them she wanted to attend dental
school. They saw her as a goofy blonde. It wasn’t until she
got a job with a dentist that she started believing in herself.
“She believed in me, so I had at least somebody,” she says.
She packed and headed to dental school, following the wise words of her
grandmother telling her she will be better able to care for her son with a dental
degree. She graduated four years later, and has now been doing dentistry for over
30 years. “Follow your dreams with all your heart,” she says. Don’t listen to
other’s opinions telling you you can’t do what you want. “It doesn’t matter your
financial situation, your education, your age, your social status, your looks or
your past,” she says. “[It’s] your life, your dreams!”

Anita Padilla
FOX News Chicago Reporter
Padilla came from a poor family; her dad worked three
jobs just to put food on the table. She and her family ate a
lot of rice and beans, but modest Padilla thought this was
good eating. Her humbled beginnings keep her grounded to
this day. “Just because you don’t have money doesn’t mean
you don’t have potential,” she says. She feels everybody
Carey Lynch
General Manager
Woody Buick, Pontiac, GMC
To have success with buying a car, don’t believe
everything you hear, and make sure you have everything in
writing. Research. And know that if it seems too good to
be true, it probably is.
Take your time, and think about your purchase. There
should be no buyer’s remorse. “If you’re not sure about what you’re buying
we’d rather you take the car,” General Manager Carey Lynch says. The staff at
Woody Buick allows you to take home a car and test drive it for the day to make
sure you will be happy with your purchase.
There are car dealers that don’t fit the stereotype. “If you go to buy a car
and somebody offends you or you don’t mesh with that person, walk out,”
Carey says. Purchase a car from somebody you like—a person you can relate to.
“There are no seatbelts when you negotiate a car deal,” she says.

Judith Wright
Wright Leadership Institute
“Make your One Decision—a commitment to the
quality of your life. You don’t need to make the perfect
commitment, simply test drive a One Decision like:
I choose to be a stand for truth; I live my life as an
adventure; I choose to be conscious and present; or I am
a vessel for spirit. It’s not as important what you pick; it’s
that you pick, that you choose to live a quality life. This commitment can be
your guide for making the big decisions as well as all of the small decisions
in life. And this simple yet powerful choice can make the biggest difference
in the world.
Always keep growing and get the coaching, training, skills, and support
to live a great life. A great life doesn’t just happen–it’s something you train to
do. And, you don’t do it by yourself. Surround yourself with people who will
tell you the truth–who will both buoy you and kick you in the butt when you
need it. For me, learning new skills as well as getting feedback on what I’m
doing that’s not so great is incredibly powerful. We all deserve a great life–but
we have to be willing to do what it takes to live it.”

“Do something you love and enjoy,” says Dr. Jasmine
Singh, owner of Chic Med Spa. If you love what you
do, you never have to work a day in your life.” Have
confidence in yourself and keep your focus on your goals.
“If you know in your heart you can do it, you have to stick
to it, and the rest will follow,” she says.
When she started, everybody told her she couldn’t do it. They said, “You
have to be out of your mind to have two offices, one in Chicago and another in
Westmont. You’re the mom of two kids and you’re working full time?” The first
question women always ask her is “do you work,” and when she answers yes,
they always follow up with, “do you work part time?” Dr. Singh was raised to
have a strong work ethic. “I knew what I wanted, and I wasn’t willing to give up,”
she says.

deserves a chance.
She was given a chance during college when she got an internship, with no
experience, at a radio station. It was up from there. She has always believed in
herself and says if you do, you can do anything you want in life. “Trust your gut,”
she says. And be independent. She never wants to depend on anybody. “I want to
make my own money and create my own happiness and destiny,” she says. And
she has.

Director of Research at the Rinehart Center
for Reproductive Medicine
Director of Millenova Immunology Laboratories
When Dr. Carolyn Coulam, of the Rinehart Center for
Reproductive Medicine, decided the career she wanted to
pursue, she didn’t let anybody hold her down. Her pre-med
advisor suggested she go into education, a program that
would better suit her. She just laughed. And when she was interviewed for medical
school, they suggested she would not be able to be married, raise kids and work
in the medical field. This year, Dr. Coulam is celebrating 30 years as an expert in
recurrent pregnancy loss and she has 10 children.
How did she do it? “First of all, I decided what I wanted,” she says. Then she
persevered. “I kept going and was not afraid to look at lofty goals,” she says. “Just
keep going.” When she was faced with a challenge, she pushed it aside and kept
on track. “My mom raised me that way and my father too,” she says.

Missy Saenz
Owner of Tu Bella
“Do not give up,” says Owner of Tu Bella, Missy
Saenz. “Somehow there is a way.” She had a goal to help
women suffering from hair loss and thinning hair and she
strived to reach it. And did. “Be ready to change your plans
and ideas,” she says.
Saenz had a vision for her own business and enrolled
in a class at the Women’s Small Business Association to learn how to start her
own company and create a business plan. From there, it was a lot of hard work
and effort. “I love when my clients ask, ‘What days are you off?’” Saenz says.
She replies, “None.” Although she may not physically be working at the business,
she is constantly thinking of ways to better it. “But that is the fun part. You get to
watch it grow,” she says.

A Woman You Should Know Sue Lapetina
By Hope Morley and Rachel Runnals
In 1990, Sue Lapetina had just been promoted to a claims management position
at State Farm Insurance and was starting a new relationship. Then, at the age of
36, she was diagnosed with breast cancer.
A biopsy revealed that Sue had invasive lobular carcinoma in her right breast.
This type of cancer grows in the lobules of the breast where milk is produced.
It was also discovered that she was lymph node and hormone positive, which
means that cancer cells had migrated to her lymph nodes and that the cancer
was exasperated by her body’s own estrogen.
Over the course of the next 18 months, Sue underwent a mastectomy,
chemotherapy and three plastic surgeries. Because her cancer was hormone
positive, she was also on hormone therapy medication to suppress the growth
of the cancer.
Sue says she had great support
throughout her treatment, both from
her family and boyfriend, Steve
Ault. She continued to work while
undergoing chemo and said her coworkers were amazed at her positive
attitude and desire to keep working.

detection and answers any questions
the girls may have. All presenters are
breast cancer survivors.
“In the end, doing the presentations
became my catharsis. I learned to talk
about my diagnosis openly, which in
turn helped others,” she said. Sue still
tries to do three or four presentations
a year in her community.
Breast Cancer Network of Strength’s
mission is to ensure, through
information, empowerment and peer
support, that no one faces breast
cancer alone. The organization
provides immediate emotional relief
for woman who cannot wait for
tomorrow’s cure. All programs and
services are free of charge to anyone
Sue and her husband, Steve
touched by breast cancer, and include
a 24/7 Hotline, support groups, educational workshops and more.
“I admire the passion and dedication this organization has for the cause,” Sue said.
“I came out the other side with a clear understanding of what was important
and where I wanted to be, which was different from the path I was on at
the time,” Sue said. “I got off the fast track and began concentrating on
building relationships.”
One such relationship was Ault, who supported Sue through her treatment and
recovery. The two married in 2004 and now live in West Chicago with their two
cats, Noodles and Bentley.
Two years after her diagnosis, Sue’s oncologist Dr. Kathy Albain referred her
to Breast Cancer Network of Strength, then known as Y-ME National Breast
Cancer Organization. The Chicago-based organization was starting a program
called “Just for Teens” that was aimed at educating high school girls about
breast health.
“My primary reason for volunteering was that, as an adult, I was so uneducated
on the subject of breast cancer. I felt strongly that getting information into the
hands of young women about early detection was critical,” she said.
Eighteen years after her diagnosis, Sue has no regrets about her experience with
breast cancer. “Although I wouldn't wish this on anyone, I would not change
going through the experience. It changed me for the better.”

plants for a dollar an hour to help make money for the family. Life got harder
at home when her father lost his job because of his drinking and forced the
family to rely on their church for food. She begged her mother to divorce her
father and made the promise to herself that she’d never rely on anyone for

She rushed to the phone and made her mom an appointment. Two
weeks later she had an amazing hairpiece that looked completely
natural. Saenz couldn’t believe it. “I couldn’t get it out of my
head—this was the answer for all the women suffering from hair
loss,” she says. Within a month she took off to Florida to start
training.
She attended high school, where she went to trade school for dental assisting.
She was in sports from softball to soccer and many plays, which her parents
seldom attended. She worked hard, graduating a semester early. But when
it became time to decide her career path, she was confused. “What I really
wanted to do was be a dentist,” she says. “But I didn’t pursue it because I didn’t
think I could succeed at it.” She didn’t believe in herself until she worked for a
dentist who believed in her.
When she returned, she opened a shop, Tu Bella, to change lives
by helping women with medical hair loss or thinning hair to have
full, thick hair. She loves the reactions she receives. “Nothing

She pursued her dream and started taking classes at the College of DuPage, then
transferred to Elmhurst College where she received her degree in psychology.
She applied to the Loyola University School of Dentistry. The courses were
rigorous, and she was a single mom, working full time, but managed to graduate
four years later with a dental degree from Loyola.

Following this job she commuted to Bourbonnais where she planned to

She was inspired to do this type of dentistry when she was diagnosed with

A Woman You Should Know
Anita Padilla— From Humble Beginnings
By Ashleigh Eisbrener, Staff Writer
She overcame a challenged childhood, got through her parents divorce
and dealt with her mother’s death all before she graduated college. She
is now one of Chicago’s talented and successful broadcast journalists,
a loved wife and mother and she gives back to the community. To top
it off, she achieved everything herself.
Anita Padilla was born second of four children to two Mexican-American
parents and grew up as a self-described tomboy in nearby Waukegan.
She reminisces on the great relationship she had with her mother growing
up. Padilla didn’t know her dad well during her childhood. He worked
three jobs to put food on the table for the family of six. She describes

followed her throughout her life.
During her school years at Waukegan East High School, she had many

keep her grounded. “Just because you don’t have money doesn’t mean
you don’t have potential,” she says, which is why she feels everybody
deserves a chance.
At age 18, Padilla’s parents got divorced and she moved to Madison to
go to the Madison Area Technical College. She then transferred to the

she did in her earlier education. She decided to pursue her interest in
communications and transferred to Columbia College Chicago in search
of a journalism degree.

A Woman You Should Know
Judith Wright
By Ashleigh Eisbrener, Staff Writer
How did a former fat girl from the factory town of Flint, Michigan
end up as a lifestyles expert being interviewed by Diane Sawyer on
Good Morning America? The path that led Judith Wright to this place
in her life isn’t what you might expect.
Judith is the founder of the Chicago-based Wright Leadership
Institute and the author of The One Decision and The Soft Addiction
Solution. A pioneer in human development, she is also the founder
of the Society of Femininity in Action, a cutting-edge woman’s
organization. She has become a media favorite, appearing on over
400 radio stations and 70 television shows, including 20/20, Oprah,
the Today show and Good Morning America and newspapers and
magazines across the country, including Marie Claire, Fitness
Magazine, The Chicago Tribune and The Detroit Free Press. The San
Francisco Chronicle called her “one of the most sought-after selfhelp gurus in the country.” Through her writing, teaching, coaching,
and public speeches, Wright clarifies what it takes to have it all.
Judith grew up in a factory town watching people trudge through
the daily grind of working on the assembly line, then escaping to the
corner bar or plopping in front of the TV to chase away the tedium.
“They got paid well. They had benefits,” she says, “but they were
also zoned out, numbed out and in a rut and routine. I thought, ‘is
this all there is?’”
She knew that she wanted something else out of life and tried to
get it. She excelled in school but academic excellence didn’t mean
much in a community that venerated football heroes, not brains. She
led activities from being yearbook editor to class officer, committee
volunteer to drum majorette. Yet something was still missing. Even
with all of this success, she was fat and unhappy—a chubby teenager
who tried to fill her emptiness by gobbling cookies in front of the TV
before heading off to do her homework.
Judith kept trying to get more out of life—graduating high school
as valedictorian and going on to graduate summa cum laude from
her college. She continued to excel—reaching national prominence
in two different careers before the age of 28. Still unhappy, she kept
looking for what would fulfill her. She finally lost the weight that
had plagued her childhood and adolescent years. Still pursuing the
American dream, she married her college sweetheart, a handsome
man with a genius IQ.
Finally—she had it all—she was thin, successful, and married to a
gorgeous, intelligent man. But inside she was miserable. Nothing
had really changed. Friends were constantly telling her she was so
lucky. She didn’t think so. “I thought, I can’t live like this,” she says.
“This is horribly wrong.” Instead of facing her problems, she went
shopping or gossiped with friends—activities she now calls “soft
addictions.”
Something was missing, but she wasn’t sure what. She knew one
thing—she didn’t want to live this way for the next 60 years. She was
doing cutting-edge work at the time, establishing model programs
for disabled college students to attend school. “There was something
the

who were paraplegics,
quadriplegics,hadcerebral
palsy or mental illness,”
she says. “I started to
notice the differences
between the students I was
counseling. Some were
embracing their lives fully
with a sense of joy and
adventure,” Wright says,
“while others seemed
to define themselves as
victims.”
Then it hit her. “It was not
about having the perfect
body, or mind, or even
circumstances,” she says.
The students she counseled certainly did not have perfect bodies or
minds, and they often faced horrific circumstances. Yet despite their
situations, many of the students were living a happier, more fulfilling
life than she was, even with all of her external successes. According
to Judith, “They made a choice about how they were going to live,
what I ended up calling a One Decision.” At this moment, Wright
made her One Decision. She decided to stop “sleepwalking” through
her life and to wake up, feel, be present, and embrace life.
She added activities and people into her life to meet her deeper
soul hungers rather than her superficial needs. After trying to work
through the difficulties of her marriage, she finally let go of what
looked great on the outside, but was empty on the inside. She started
dating again, being more real and truthful. That’s when she met her
husband Bob. They had long conversations full of truth and feedback.
He was the type of person that she was striving to be. They later
married and went on to co-found the Wright Leadership Institute in
Chicago, sharing the secrets to a great life through their trainings and
proven curriculum.
And now people from all walks of life attend Wright Leadership
Institute programs and courses to learn the life skills that Judith
discovered the hard way. Their clients experience the sense of
satisfaction and fulfillment that comes from having success in every
area of their life from career, relationships and family life to health
and spirituality. “There is a lot more to life,” she says. “And most
people settle or give up.” Judith and Bob re-awaken the possibilities
within people and then give them the proven and practical tools they
need to succeed through a unique three-pronged approach—coaching,
group training, and learning laboratories.

Who Says "Car Dealerships Are Run By Men?"
By Ashleigh Eisbrener
Woody Buick, Pontiac, GMC is owned by a man but run predominantly
by women. After having a woman manager at another dealership, he was
astounded by her attention to detail and listening skills. And unlike some
car dealerships, Owner Woody—a self-made man who worked his way
up from a salesperson—can be found in the show room.
The staff at Woody BPG believes in total disclosure and doesn’t push
or hassle you. Their best price is given upfront. Buyers are pleasantly
surprised at how different and fairly they are treated when they walk
through the door. Their honesty and reliability has earned them one
of the highest customer ratings in the area. “Constantly we hear from

now for 10 years. “I tried it, and I loved it,” Carey says.
She worked her way up from salesperson to general manager and is proud
to be one of the women behind the dealership. She enjoys interacting with
people daily and loves to dispel the “typical car dealer” myth. She is an
extremely hard worker—sometimes putting in 65 hours a week. She is also
a single mother of three girls, and during her visitation weekends with her
children, she is given Saturdays off. “Having Saturdays off is unheard of
in this industry,” she says. When she took the job, she told Woody she’d
always have the chance to be a Salesman of the Month but never have a
chance to be a mother. He made it so she could have both.
She has heard everything and is never judgmental. She is patient and
happy to speak with and educate each customer whether they have credit

Sheri Jonas — Kawasaki Disease
Sheri Jonas reminisces of the time, a little over half a year ago, when
her daughter came down with an extremely high fever, followed by a
rash, swelling of her hands and feet and abdominal pains. Not only
was Sheri unfamiliar with what was happening to her daughter, but
doctors didn’t recognize the child’s symptoms either. Sheri’s motherly

Samantha Jonas was three and a half and doing what any child that age

another because she was so lethargic.” Within six hours of onset of her
symptoms and no sign of her daughter recovering, she called the doctor.
Misdiagnosed. Because of her rash, the doctor told her it was probably

Dr. Jasmine Singh —
She Decided She Wanted to Change Lives
By Ashleigh Eisbrener
“Resistance is often the biggest problem,”
she says. “They don’t think it will happen
to them.” But the earlier the treatment, the
better the options. If the breast cancer is
detected early, surgeons can often preserve
the breast, just doing a lumpectomy. “I
push for women to focus on preventive
care,” she says, “to get regular checkups,
go for screening mammograms, so they
can be diagnosed early and get it taken
care of in time.” It’s harder to deal with
if you’re first diagnosed with stage four
cancer. “Take care of yourself,” she
says. Women are used to taking care of
others before themselves, including their
husband, children, parents and friends, but
Dr. Singh stresses the importance of taking
care of yourself as well. She cares strongly
for her patients and has their health in her
best interest.
A young medical student with wavy, brown
hair walks into an operating room with
four other students to observe for the first
time. The 45-minute surgery starts and the
surgeon raises his tool, putting it to the skin
and cutting through the first layer. Two
girls fall to the floor. Shortly after, another
student falls to the floor. “By the time we
were halfway through, the doctor said, ‘If
anybody else wants to faint, step outside,’”
says Dr. Jasmine Singh, owner of Chic Med
Spa, laughing. “I made it through.”
Dr. Singh was heavily influenced by her
aunt to pursue medical school after a lifechanging experience during one of her
summer break visits. She was a student
observer following her aunt at the Regional
Medical Center when a woman came in
suffering from a severe hemorrhage and
bleeding profusely. “It was a touching experience to see how [my
aunt] reassured the patient who was obviously distraught,” she says.
Her aunt kept up the woman’s spirits while arranging for immediate
surgery. The surgery was successful, and to this day the patient still
visits Dr. Singh’s aunt to thank her. “That was my introduction to a
career in Medicine,” she says. “I wanted to change lives.”
Realizing patients “feel good when they look good and look good
when they feel good,” two and a half years ago she introduced
another area to her office, aesthetic procedures. She performs
laser facials, laser treatments for spider veins and brown spots,
Botox® and dermal fillers, such as Juvéderm™ and Restylane®. She
was drawn to these wrinkle reducing treatments because of their
dramatic results. It rebuilds their confidence. She had a mother
come in with her daughter, and following the woman’s treatment
her daughter said, “Wow mommy, you look so different.” The
woman told Dr. Singh the reason she had these treatments done was
because she is often mistaken as her daughter’s grandmother.
She attended medical school becoming the seventeenth doctor in
her family. While there, she was attracted to the variety of diseases
and treatments she learned about, from the head down to the toes,
and decided to pursue a career in internal medicine. She completed
her residency at the State University of New York. She and her
