PRINCIPAL`S COMMENTS Greetings all and welcome to Week 3
PRINCIPAL’S COMMENTS Greetings all and welcome to Week 3. Congratulations to Imogen Bailey for her wonderful effort in gaining selection in the Hunter Regional Cross Country Team to compete in the State Carnival later this term. Imogen was one of four Bonnells Bay children who ran in the Regional Carnival last week. All the children performed extremely well and scored high placings but Imogen qualified to represent our region at State. We are very proud of Imogen for her achievement and wish her the best. NAPLAN Our children in Years 3 and 5 are currently undertaking the NAPLAN tests for 2013. These tests are a yearly event that assesses children’s literacy, numeracy, language and writing skills. They are valuable to gauge school priorities in curriculum development. Bonnells Bay Public School provides students a breakfast of cereal and toast on NAPLAN days. A big thank you to Sanitarium for their support of our breakfasts. MOTHERS DAY BREAKFAST A record number of grateful mums attended the Mothers Day breakfast last Friday. The breakfast was the biggest and best event yet to celebrate Mothers Day at school. A huge thank you to all our sponsors for donating raffle prizes and to Mrs Sibley and Mrs Wilson for their amazing work in organising the event. Mothers Day and Fathers Day celebrations are wonderful examples of the community spirit that underpins this great school. CENTENARY BOOK LAUNCH We were really fortunate to be able to use our newly renovated school hall as the location to officially launch the 100 Year Centenary book last week. The school welcomed Mr Greg Combet, Federal Member for Charlton and Federal Cabinet Minister, along with author Mr Doug Saxon, Mr Col Roach and P&C President Mrs Kirsten Gomez as the official party to launch the book. Our choir sang beautifully and the ceremony was very successful. The book is on sale at the school administration office for $33 and is great value for money. Thank you to the school leaders for running the assembly and representing the school so well. SCHOOL UNIFORM Leading into the winter season I would like to see an emphasis on school uniform. School jumpers and long pants are available from the Uniform Shop and look much better than multi coloured non uniform varieties. Our uniforms are also less expensive and promote the school culture across the grades. Please be aware that good quality school shoes or black joggers are part of the uniform and not fluro slippers. These fluro slippers are not good for growing feet and are not safe for sport. Please label your child’s clothing so if an item is lost it can be returned to your child. COKE AND LOLLIES AT SCHOOL It has come to my attention that some children are bringing cans of coke and bags of lollies to school. Soft drink and lollies are not permitted at school. Please ensure children do not bring them for lunch or recess. P&C MEETING The next meeting of our P&C will take place next Tuesday, 21st May at 6pm in the staff room. Everyone is most welcome to attend. Have a great week. Special congratulations to Imogen who will represent the Hunter Region at State Cross Country. Mr Shipley WE’RE TAKING IT IN OUR STRIDE ON FRIDAY, 24th MAY 2013 Well it’s that time of year again when our school seriously starts talking about walking! Walk Safely to School Day asks that we all consider our transport habits and try to incorporate more walking as part of a healthy, active way to get around. And although walking all the way to school isn’t realistic for many of us, it’s quite easy to figure out how you can build a walk into your family’s daily routine. You can teach your child the healthy habit of walking more by: Walking with them the whole way to school If they get the bus or train, walk past your usual stop and get on at the next stop If you have to drive, park the car a few blocks away from the school and walk the rest of the way. Regular exercise like walking with your child not only helps them (and you!) beat chronic problems like obesity, heart disease, behavioural and mental health issues and diabetes. It also gives you a great opportunity to teach your child safe ways to behave around roads and traffic. Remember, Active Kids are Healthy Kids so get planning your own Walk Safely to School Day journey for Friday 24th May 2013! For more information, visit www.walk.com.au Parents & Citizens Supporting Our School We hope you and your families had a special day last Sunday. We’d like to thank everyone who contributed to the Mothers Day Stall on Friday and a very special thank you to our wonderful volunteers; Kim Marchant, Leanne Hendrie, Liz Cooper, Danielle Horn, Heidi O’Reilly, Belinda Patterson and Nat Marsh. The morning would not have run so smoothly without you all. Thank you! P& C Meeting The next meeting is on Tuesday, 21st May, at 6pm. If you have an idea or an issue you would like raised at a meeting, you can email [email protected] and your idea/issue will be added to the agenda for discussion. The result of the discussion can be emailed back to you. The P&C at Bonnells Bay Public School plays an important role in creating a bridge between parents, school and communities. We encourage your input. Christmas in July Shopping Trip!! A Sydney shopping bus tour is booked in for Sunday 21st July, departing 6.30am. Make a day of it and invite your mum, sisters and friends. We had really good support from local media as well as members of parliament. Now that the Salon is officially open I will be organising days later this term or early next term where students from our primary schools can come up to the high school and complete some hairdressing workshops with my TAFE teacher Mrs Creagh. We have had a lot of success in sport already this term, Morisset High School came first in the Zone Cross-Country Carnival and twenty eight students made it to the Regional Finals and one student Nathaniel Cooke qualified for the State Carnival. This is now the second time in a row that we have won the Zone Carnival. Our open boys’ touch football team are now in the final eight for the Region. A number of our students entered the Dobel Arts Festival last month and Brenton Swadling came third in the overall high school section and two students received highly commendable mentions – Paige Anton and Sharni Jefferies. This is an amazing effort from our students and Visual Arts Faculty. We had over 40 entries in the GOATS writing festival which showcases the many talents and passions that young people aged under 25 contribute to our community. Students were asked to submit a piece of writing on the theme 'Be Happy, Be Active, Be You'. Two students from Year 7 were awarded 1st and 3rd and a student from Year 8 was awarded 2nd place. In Drama we entered students in a state wide Theatre Sports Competition, our junior theatre sports team placed 2nd at the regional finals securing them a place in the semi-finals in Sydney and our senior team placed 3rd, securing them a place in the knock out rounds. Finally it was great to see our group of schools getting a one page spread in the Lakes Mail earlier this term highlighting our collaboration and the amazing opportunities that we provide for our students. I appreciate the support that our community gives our collective schools celebrating the fact that we are the preferred option for education within our area.
