Brisbane Comedy Festival is on Tuesday 26 February – Sunday 24 March 2013.

Time and Super Happy Fun Times. This year the festival also includes two live podcasts – The
Minutes Podcast with Mel Buttle and Patience Hodgson from The Grates and The Little Dum Dum
Club Podcast with comedians Tommy Dassalo and Karl Chandler.
Another addition to the festival is the family-friendly Adam by Belgian comedian/puppeteer Stephane

theory of gravity.
Audiences will enjoy comic musings, side-splitting stories and tear-inducing tales from Ronny Chieng,
Damian Callinan, Breakout Comedy, Jack Druce, Bart Freebairn, Rhys Nicholson, Damien Power,
Matt Okine, Darren McGinlay and Slow Clap.
On Fridays and Saturdays during the festival audiences can check out the 10pm Chalkboard

Pretending Things Are a Cock
‘Bennett is a master storyteller’ **** Time Out, Melbourne
‘Instantly likeable, Bennett is a deft storyteller with a frank, confessional style that blends pathos &
humour to great effect’ ****½ Uptown Magazine
Just For Laughs Best Comedy Nominee – Montreal Fringe
Best of the Fest – Winnipeg Fringe
After critically acclaimed performances to sell out audiences around the world, and a legion of
Facebook fans - Australian comedic artist Jon Bennett brings his Just for Laughs - Best Comedy
nominated show of over 200 pretend cocks to the Brisbane Comedy Festival.
A unique stand-up experience, Pretending Things Are A Cock is part photographic display, part
pot-holed journey into the idiosyncratic world of Jon Bennett.
The product of four years global wandering, Bennett presents a show which combines an artistic, phallic‐themed photographic display with hilarious and heart‐wrenching tales from his life, giving the audience an insight into the artist’s mind.
Bennett’s ‘cocks’ range from ordinary household utensils, monuments around the world to weird
and obscure objects. The show grew from an exhibition and art experiment that delved into the
nature of masculinity and sex, but mainly exposes the interpretations of irony within society.
Spawning a published book, PTAAC has now become a live event.
PTAAC has performed sold out shows at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival (2010/11),
Vancouver and Montreal Fringe Festivals (2010), Edmonton Fringe (2011), Falls Festival (2011/12),
Winnipeg Fringe (2012) and the Edinburgh Fringe (2012).
‘At the end of this hilarious and thoughtful hour, no one seems to want to leave the room’
**** Vue Weekly
‘True brilliance’ **** Edmonton Journal

AUSTRALIA’S FAVOURITE COMEDIAN RETURNS AUSTRALIAN TOUR 2013 Letters. Funny old things? They can make you laugh. They can make you cry. They can make paper aeroplanes. This show features some of the letters you never got round to writing because you thought life was too short. Well, I think life is just about the right length, so plenty of time to write to these arseholes. Crusade is not the right word, but join me on my crusade to effect real change in this broken world. This is a stand up show with some sitting down – Danny Bhoy Danny began his stand up career in 1998 and in 1999 he won The Daily Telegraph Open Mic Award, the biggest national competition in the UK for new comics. In 2001, Danny debuted his first solo show at the Edinburgh Festival to audience enrapture and critical acclaim. Since then, he has continued to build on his stand up success in the UK, with nine return visits to the Edinburgh Fringe, with his latest offerings packing out the biggest venues in town! But, his success at home tells only a small part of the story. Since his first visit abroad to the Melbourne Comedy Festival in 2003, Danny has become one of the most globally successful and prolific comics working in the world today. He has built up a massive following in Australia, New Zealand and Canada, where he regularly tours record‐breaking shows. As probably the most travelled comedian working in the world today, Danny’s unique brand of story‐telling and razor sharp wit has been described as “effortlessly funny”, and “the stand‐up equivalent of Bill Bryson”. Danny’s first two DVD’s ‘Live at The Opera House’, and ‘Live at the Athenaeum’ released only in Australia and New Zealand, enjoyed huge success. And in early 2012, Danny recorded his first worldwide DVD in his home town of Edinburgh, ‘Live At The Festival Theatre’ which was recently released in the UK and will be released in Australia on March 7 through Roadshow Entertainment to coincide with the tour. In addition to regular appearances on Canada’s ‘Just For Laughs’ galas, Danny has also performed TV spots on ‘Live At The Apollo’ in the UK and ‘The David Letterman Show’ in the US. He has also recorded a highly prestigious one‐hour Comedy Central Special. Paul’s A to Z of Superheroes gives us the down‐low on 26 heroes in 60 minutes. From Aquaman to Batman and from Captain America to Xena, Paul asks “why do these people want to save us and why do they need to dress up in tights to do it?”. “What are the stories behind the gadgets, the costumes and the secret identities? What Skin cream does Aquaman wear to hydrate? If Batman was born in Queensland would he be Fruit‐Batman? Is Superman the strongest asylum seeker ever?” Described by the press as one of Australia’s greatest comedians, Paul’s A to Z of Superheroes is his fifth one‐man‐show which will show not only a comedian at the height of his powers but also bring to light his life‐long addiction to comic books. MEL BUTTLE
HOW EMBARRASSMENT
Triple J’s Mel Buttle is a comedian from Brisbane who struggles with embarrassment, her desire to put cats
in costumes, the paid parking at Chermside and keeping up to date with writing in her Feelings Journal.
Mel Buttle is proud to debut her hotly anticipated new show, in her home town of Brisbane. She had a
cracker of a year in 2012, scoring a column in The Courier Mail and her own segment with Tom and Alex
on Triple J not to mention that her hit podcast The Minutes with Mel and Patience debuted at #2 overall on
the iTunes. (Whatever though).
Despite her success, Mel Buttle is writing this in her pajamas with Cheezel-stained fingers but wants you to
know even though she is crippled by this awkward third person writing style, she is very professional.
“Oh no, you’re not going to write that are you?” – Mel’s mum.
“Gifted of rare talent” The Age
“Buttle has the right mix of confidence and vulnerability to get the audience on side and the
material to keep them there … there is something about Buttle that brings a young Judith Lucy to
mind. It would come as no surprise if she was just as successful.” Brisbane Courier Mail
“With the confidence, presence and sarcasm of a young Kitty Flanagan, Buttle had the audience
eating out of her hand with some hilariously wrong stories…”

Media Release For Immediate Release The Minutes Podcast with Mel and Patience Brissy girls, Comedian Mel Buttle and Patience from The Grates have been making their very own homemade podcast since 2011. With over 6,000 downloads a week and a debut that ruffled Hamish and Andy’s feathers (peaking at #2 on the iTunes charts) these girls started with a simple podcast, but have ended up building a community of listeners worldwide who just can’t get enough. Mel and Pae developed The Minutes podcast idea, over tea and cake on Patience’s couch in Camp Hill, the podcast is heavily and purposefully set in Brisbane. ‘We’re Brisbane to the core, we love Brissy to death!’ said Patience. The Girls have achieved success interstate, selling out their debut live podcast at the Sydney Fringe Festival, but are keen as mustard to show their wares during the Brisbane Comedy Festival. ‘I can’t wait to do The Minutes podcast in my hometown, I’ll be able to make jokes about Chermside and Stefan’s Needle and Sarina Russo and have people get them’ said Mel. The podcast is peppered with big name guests from the worlds of comedy and music, with singer Ben Lee appearing in the girls live Sydney podcast, can Brisbane expect to see the girls calling in any favours from their famous friends for the Brisbane Comedy Festival? ‘We’ve made some phone calls, we’re waiting to hear back, also I’d check your email Nicki Minaj’ said Patience . Patience is the charismatic front woman of chart‐topping ARIA‐award‐nominated Brisbane band The Grates. Although their style is low fi they’re no strangers to live performance, with Mel continuing to be one of the fastest rising stars on the national standup scene. ‘Come see our podcast, it’ll be at least as good as a night out at the Carina Leagues Club’ said Mel. Brisbane Powerhouse and Harley Breen
Present
Harley Breen – Some kind of something
Fresh from spreading his own kind of “something” all around Australia on his successful
solo tour, Harley Breen is back and ready to share his own unique take on the world in
what is sure to be another knock-out show.
“The man is truly funny” herald sun
Through his wide travels (Which last year included extensive touring of Australia and also shows
throughout India as part of their inaugural Melbourne Comedy Festival Roadshow) Breen has
come across a lot of people and experiences that have over the years helped form his worldview.
In recent years he has found a lot of what he thought to be truths to be, well, full of shit.
This year Breen wants to look back on some of the things that he had accepted as truths, without
ever really checking the facts.
Perhaps raising a child means that he wants to pass on reputable knowledge, or perhaps he’s just
simply sick of all the misdirection in the world. Either way, with a suitcase bearing notches from
South-East Asia to Edinburgh, Breen has a wealth of world-experience to draw upon as he lays
down the truth and laughs as only he can.
" Very funny" -The Age
“Breen flipped the mood in to all out fun!” mediaculture.org.au
"Breen is equal parts exhilarating, easy-to-follow and improvised as he bounces seamlessly from punchline
to punchline without missing a beat in an impeccably timed comedic routine." Herald sun

STAND –UP DAMIAN CALLINAN Presents ‘THE MERGER’ After two years of touring, Damian Callinan brings The Merger to the 2013 Brisbane Comedy Festival. This character based, one‐man show received its 3rd Barry Award nomination for Best Show at the Melbourne Comedy Festival and has gone onto critically acclaimed seasons at Sydney’s Seymour Centre, The Adelaide Fringe Festival and regional arts tours throughout Australia. “ … A ready‐to‐go one‐man sitcom ‐ could be the next Summer Heights High.” UK Chortle.com The Merger tells the tale of The Bodgy Creek Football Club. Winless for a record 34 games, they take solace after taking out Carbon Neutral Footy Club Of The Year. But their joy is short lived and struggling to field a team for the new season they seemed destined to either fold or merge with their arch rivals ‐ Hudson’s Flat. Prodigal son, coach Troy Carrington has other ideas and to save the battling rural club he embarks on a program to recruit Asylum Seekers. Will the new players cope with pre season training whilst fasting for Ramadan? ‘The Merger is another terrific solo effort from one of this country's finest character comedians’ Herald Sun ‘He is a sharp comic performer and raconteur. when you get angry, you have to get organised.

romantic comedy you didn’t like... well maybe put yourself on the shitlist for that one, what did you expect?
Everybody needs a (s)hitlist. Its about making sure you don’t make the same mistake twice and giving
Karma a bit of hurry along, in this life.
Everybody has a (s)hitlist. What’s on yours? Every night Chopper creates a new (s)hitlist with the audience
in an audio-visual, interactive, group therapy comedy slapdown. Be part of show by submitting your entry
to The Shitlist now by tweeting #Choppersshitlist.
So, see Chopper live and in stabbing distance, in fact put it on your to do list, just above laughing your arse
off.
Easily the best list since Schindler's.
"Australia’s funniest comedy character..." ***** - Sunday Mail
'He is a wonderful mimic. He is also a bloody good comic. " **** - The Age
"This is a top hour of uproariously entertaining comedy. Heath Franklin’s comically ghastly creation is a
rock-solid stand-up, a character so well cast that he seems to have an independent life…packed with good
gags and ‘so wrong its right" moments’" **** - Chortle UK

Comedy for Young and Old at Brisbane Comedy Festival
Brisbane Powerhouse, Compagnie Chemins de Terre, Belgium, in association with Black Hole
Theatre, Inc. presents: Adam, Professor of the Laboratory
“Truly magical!” Le Jour
“Belgian performer Stephane Georis is a master at animating the inanimate object, imbuing it with
character and feelings.” The Australian
Looking for kid-friendly comedy at Brisbane Comedy Festival? This year critically-acclaimed Belgian
puppeteer Stephane Georis brings cabbages, pizza and coffee cups to life in Adam, a show that
combines comedy and science to explore the origins of the universe. Adam is on at Brisbane
Comedy festival in Saturday 16 March.
Professor Adam is trying to discover the origin of the universe, and he asks other scientists to help
with his experiments. In their quest eggs are catapulted to demonstrate the theory of gravity, green
slime signals the start of Darwinian evolution and dinosaurs roam the earth in the form of cucumbers.
In between experiments audiences will meet Mr Gauche as tries to fly.
According to The Australian, “It’s hard to pinpoint the qualities in this show that elevate it from
theatre-in-education fare to absurdist puppet theatre for adults and kids alike.
“Georis is part of an emerging trend in puppetry that dispenses with actual puppets; instead, ordinary
objects are transformed simply by adding a pair of glasses or turning them upside down. In this
show, three upturned coffee pots become loquacious companions, their lids turned into moving lips.”
The Dirt Roads Theatre Company was founded in 1988 by Stephane Georis and Geneviève Cabodi
to create work in theatre, circus and clown arts, music, dance, puppetry and object theatre. Almost
30 years later the company has performed in theatre and streets around the world and have also had
numerous co-productions with French, Italian and Danish theatre companies.
Director: Francy Begasse
Co-writers: Stéphane Georis and Francy Begasse

CENTURY ENTERTAINMENT PRESENTS STEVE HUGHES BIG ISSUES Australia’s own comic wizard is back.
With worldly insights into the bleeding obvious, Steve Hughes - arguably one of our greatest comedy exports –
returns to Australia for the third consecutive year in 2013 with his hit stand up show, Big Issues.
“Makes Armageddon sounds like a proper laugh riot.” Rolling Stone Magazine
Having sold out his seasons at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Sydney Comedy Festival and the NZ
International Comedy Festival in 2012, Hughes returns armed with more issues than an occupy movement.
Hughes tells it like it is - little is off limits for this biting political stand up. Renowned and revered for his observations
and opinions on the everyday political, social and existential world that we live in, Hughes is widely regarded as one
of the most exciting stand up comedians working the stages of the UK, Europe and Australia.
Having begun his performance career as the drummer in several Australian thrash metal bands in the 80s, Hughes
shipped out in 2002 and has been performing on the overseas stand up circuit ever since, including UK TV spots on
BBC1’s Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow and Live at The Apollo, as well as Ch 4’s Stand Up For The Week.
Locally he has performed as part of the line-up on Network Ten’s annual Melbourne International Comedy Festival
Gala.
Expect a whirlwind of vitriolic social commentary from one of our most original and thought-provoking performers.

RHYS NICHOLSON
DAWN OF A NEW ERROR
Winner 2012 Best Newcomer Sydney Comedy Festival
Rhys Nicholson was sitting on the couch watching TV with his boyfriend when he suddenly had a weird
feeling. It was a sort of strange warm sensation over his whole body. Rhys thought it was a stroke. It turned
out to be happiness.
Like some sort of coma patient, awoken from a sleep of misery and pessimism, Rhys will present a glorified
pros and cons list about contentment. He’s also going to swear, a lot, and talk about his problems, a lot.
Happiness is bullshit. Rhys will explain. No refunds.

Dave O’Neil in 33 things I should have said NO to…
Comedian Dave O’Neil returns to the Brisbane Comedy Festival
with his brand new stand-up show. Dave has 33 things he
should have said NO to, and he’s just getting around to saying
‘no’ to them now. These things range from the obvious –
McDonalds, drugs and Crocs, to the more complicated and deeper
issues – a suburban upbringing, a public education and Crocs.
In his laid back style Dave will have you agreeing with at
least one of his 33 things and maybe coming up with your own.
At the very least you’ll walk away from Dave’s show with the
thought ‘What’s so wrong with Crocs?’
Dave O’Neil is one of Australia’s most loved comics having
appeared on ABC TV’s SPICKS AND SPECKS 49 times. More recently
Dave has been seen on the ABC on Andrew Denton’s show
‘RANDLING’ where his team reached the finals. Dave was also
featured on the Adam Hill’s show ‘IN GORDON ST TONIGHT’ where
he was the live cross reporter.
Dave has performed solo shows at the Adelaide Fringe, Way out
West Perth Comedy Festival and 14 Melbourne Comedy Festivals.
This is Dave’s second time at the Brisbane Comedy Festival,
having done his ‘Happy to be out of the house’ in 2010.

LOCAL COMEDY COLLECTIVE IN THE RING FOR ROUND 2 Skills In Time premieres their second hilarious stage show at the 2013 Brisbane Comedy Festival. Greg Larsen, Henry Stone and Sam Campbell have certainly turned some heads since their pursuit of comedy began 4 years ago. Mostly being known for their sprightful online videos and live stand‐up the group shook things up when they debuted a piece of theatre at the 2012 Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney Comedy Festivals. Impressing fans and critics alike the show was an explosive mix of surrealism and character comedy. They return to this format for their 2013 show Checkmates : The Story of Kasparov and Deep Blue, an exaggerated retelling of the famous chess match between the worlds grandmaster Garry Kasparov and a computer built by IBM – Deep Blue. Transposed onto a backdrop of suburban Australia the story will follow young ‘Gavin Kasparov’ as he befriends a robot – Deep Blue. The friendship sono turns to rivalry however and the stage is set for the ultimate showdown. Who will win, man or machine? “As with our first show, Big City Dreams, this is going to be some outlandish sheeezy” offers up group member Greg. “Have you ever seen a robot get it on at schoolies? Well get your bucket lists ready to be ticked because that’s something that only this show can offer.” Where – Brisbane Powerhouse, Graffiti Room When – Tuesday 5th – Sunday 10th of March 2013 Price ‐ $16 ‐ $22 Publicity Contact – Henry Stone, 0400985963, [email protected] Web – www.skillsintime.com MEDIA RELEASE
