Dear Coburg West Community,
When you hear the word respect you get so many different, but similar
definitions, but one thing is for sure... all of us can think of examples of
when we have shown respect or when we have witnessed it. This week I
have been privileged to receive so many cards and well wishes and there
is a common thread...RESPECT. At the beginning of 2015 I was welcomed
into the Coburg West community and I hope I have made a difference to
the young learners of our community. I cannot thank the community
enough for your support, school council for their strong governance, the
amazing teacher staff who are an extremely committed and talented
group of educational leaders, Lorraine Edwards for her mentoring,
coaching, strong educational leadership and strategic thinking and last but
definitely not least the students. Nothing makes me happier than walking
into classrooms or in the yard and saying hello to them and talking about
their learning and hearing about them as individuals. Our future is bright
with our young learners who will grow to be wonderful young adults. As I
embark on a new challenge I thank you for helping me grow as a leader.
Coburg West is an amazing school and thank you for allowing to be part of
its rich history.
Kind regards,
Anthony Simone
Acting Principal

Coburg West Primary School has commenced operating the
Compass administration system. We are currently marking attendances
utilising this package. In Term 2 we will be rolling out the Compass to
families. Parents will be able to log in to their child’s account and utilise
some of the features including entering attendance explanations,
authorising permissions notices
and paying fees and excursion costs online.
An instructional note will be sent home detailing how to log in to the
system online or by downloading the Compass app.
In the meantime you are able to pay for all fees and excursions via cash,
EFTPOS and BPAY (using the same biller codes from your family
statements).
A Community Message on behalf of your School Council:
An enormous thank-you to Anthony Simone for taking the
Acting Principal reins of Coburg West for the last 5 terms. I
hope you agree that we were fortunate to have access to such a
passionate and accessible educator, and Anthony has certainly
set the bar high for future incumbents. We wish him only the
best in pursuing a once-in-a-life time opportunity to build a
new school from the ground up in Epping North – In bocca al
lupo, καλή τύχη, bon voyage, and good luck Anthony!
With Anthony’s departure we have an important role to fill
within Coburg West. To review the process so far, a Principal
Selection Panel was formed in term 1 with the intention of
appointing a permanent Principal for start of term 2.
Unfortunately we were unable to meet that initial timeframe,
and the process will be rebooted for term 2 with a new goal of
appointing a Principal for start of term 3.
This was not the outcome we had hoped for, but the unanimous
belief of the panel was that to achieve the best long-term
outcome for the school we should work through the process for
a second time. The influence that a Principal has on the culture,
staff, students and community is considerable and we want to
make sure we achieve the best possible outcome for Coburg
West.
Thank-you for your understanding, and here’s to a safe and
rejuvenating term holiday,
Sean Powell
School Council President.

upcoming projects. A great effort by our parent helpers - Amanda, Kyle,
Kimberely, Nicole, Zuzska, Amber, Paul and Peter. Thanks also to all the kids

Commonwealth Bank
SCHOOL BANKING will resume in term 2.
Please note that the new banking day is TUESDAY. Students should hand their bank
books to their class teacher on Tuesday mornings before recess.
Please ensure the books are filled out correctly, the money is safely enclosed and the
accumulated tokens are within the book.
Please note, too, tokens cannot be shared among siblings or friends and must stay with
the banking student.
For new students or existing students interested in joining the school banking program,
we will be distributing information packs in the first few weeks of term and a banking
representative will visit the school to introduce the program to new users. Alternatively,
parents may visit a Commonwealth Bank over the school holidays to set up a student
account, in preparation for next term.
Languages Day Celebration 2016
On Wednesday April 27, Coburg West Primary School will be
celebrating the rich mosaic of culture and heritage that exists in our
Languages’ Program. The students, teachers and the school
community will be immersed in an engaging and enjoyable day.
Activities organised for this day are as follows:
 The students will take part in a variety of Italian and Greek
class activities pertinent to each culture.
 The students will be encouraged to come to school dressed in
Italian or Greek national costumes, flag colours or famous
people from these countries. (Please note that this is not a
casual dress day and if students do not wish to participate in
this activity they are required come to school in school
uniform.)
 Various incursions/performances for each unit/area levels
have been organised. These include:
5/6:
Immigration Museum Presentation
3/4:
Bouzouki Performance and Greek Dancing
1/2:
Hellenic Harmonies Performance
Prep: Italian Tarantella Dance Performance
 An Italian/Greek canteen menu will also be available for
students to order from on this day.
 Students will have the opportunity to order a gelato from a
gelati van.
 The day will conclude with a whole school dancing of the
Tarantella and Zorba.
(Please note: Participation in the special canteen menu and gelati activity is
entirely optional.)
We also welcome your participation on this day so please come along and
enjoy our celebration. Grandparents would also be especially welcomed.
Your child/children will be receiving various forms early next term in
relation to the celebration. These forms will include greater detail of the
events. It is important that all forms are returned strictly by the due date
advised.
