Presented by Lisa Sousa, Professor of History,
Occidental College. The Virgin of Guadalupe
is the patron saint of Mexico, and her image
is iconic in Mexican and Chicano art. This
presentation focuses on the origins and
developments of the devotion to Guadalupe
in colonial Mexico. Special attention is given to
the incorporation of indigenous and Spanish
elements in the apparition account and miracle
stories, and colonial representations of the
Virgin in paintings and woodcuts. The lecture
will conclude with a brief discussion of some of
the recent conversations over the canonization
of Juan Diego and the appropriation of images
of Guadalupe in contemporary art.
Presented by guest lecturer Kristin Mihaylovich.

TIMELESS MELODIES
The 1930’s, Part 2: “

Mauer takes a look at the great Broadway
songwriters of the 30’s (Rodgers & Hart,
George & Ira Gershwin, Jerome Kern,
Cole Porter), the big bands that made the
decade ‘swing,’ and the dancers that take off
(literally!). It was a decade of cowboy singers
(John Wayne sings!) and the emergence of the
great black singers
(Billie Holiday, Ethel Waters, Cab Calloway)
as well as Irving Berlin’s ode to peace.
