DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT:
There

within
me.
I came to the American Film Institute to complete a project that I had begun as my thesis from Columbia University, 8 years prior: A Film adaptation of Homer’s Odyssey set in Eastern Europe, 1945.
when I was a little boy, my Grandparents told me their stories of how they survived the Second World
War, and of how they survived their grief following that war. Their tales, and those of many others,
inspired my own questions of how to create art again after the traumas of War? What purging needs
to take place before one can truly create again? These questions were the origin of this project.
In making this short film, my co-writer, Martin Horvat and I travelled to Auschwitz, and then
to my grandparents’ home town of Zamsoc, Poland. After hearing the fables of life in Poland before and during the war, journeying to that land was like entering into a distant
myth. The epic distance between their stories and the reality that happened there, 70 years
ago, is distressing. I set out to make a film that lives in the space between these two worlds.
Our team has spent hours researching at Auschwitz, the US Holocaust Museum in Washington DC,
the LA County MuseuM of the Holocaust, and at Yad Vashem in Israel. We spoke with
survivors of the war, of German, Polish and Jewish descent. I spent many hours with the
world-renowned artist Samuel Bak, a survivor of the Vilna Ghetto. Mr. Bak’s experiences
and aesthetic sensibility, a mixture of haunting realism and surrealist memories, has
immensely informed this film. Likewise, we were inspired by many Polish theater artists, such as
Tadeusz Kantor and Jerzy Grotowski, who sought to find new languages to depict their changed worlds.
Theodor Adorno wrote “there can be no art after Auschwitz,” and yet we live on. Certainly the same language of art could not be reiterated, but as we as humans proceed a new language must repeatedly be made so that the horrors of the past be neither repeated nor forgotten. As time beats against memory, this film is an effort to look at the past in a new lens.
LOGLINE:
When an SS officer encounters a troupe of survivors celebrating the end of WWII, he must
come to terms with his complicity in their grief.
SHORT SYNOPSIS:
In the days following the end of World War II, a young SS officer hides in an abandoned Polish theater. A theater troupe of survivors enters to celebrate the end of the war. As the
soldier witnesses the expression of their painful past, he is forced to come to terms with his
complicity in their grief.
LONG SYNOPSIS:
In the days following the end of World War II, a young SS officer hides in an abandoned Polish theater. A theater troupe of survivors enters to celebrate the end of the war. Having
camouflaged his identity, and remaining mute so as not to reveal his native German tongue, the
soldier joins the survivors in a vibrant celebration. As he witnesses the expression of their
painful past, he is forced to come to terms with his complicity in their grief.
