Athabasca
River
Ramblers
We are a new Caller-Run club that started up as a result of a new dancer
requesting more than one night of dancing per week. Last season we danced
at the historic Train Station in Athabasca from January to April. This season we
dance at the Turnabout Avenue Place (5412-50 Avenue) in Athabasca on
Friday evenings from 7 to 9 PM.
We, together with Boyle Twilight Twirlers have participated in providing
entertainment for the Lac La Biche Heritage Days and Canada Day
celebrations. We also did a demo and mixer at Grosmont Hall. An information
table at the Boyle Wildberry Festival and Athabasca Community Registration
Night has resulted in new dancers as well as returning dancers joining our
group.
Caller couple, Bob & Ethel Fyfe, along with their assistants Phil & Jo Sedgwick
invite all new and returning dancers to attend either/or both Athabasca River
Ramblers on Friday evenings or Boyle Twilight Twirlers on Sunday afternoons
as the program will be the same – alternating tips for new and seasoned
dancers.
The River Ramblers welcome all dancers and guests.

It is wonderful to see everyone back on the dance floor again.
So exciting to see Marcia return to us from Brazil; and Eileen
for returning after a lengthy absence.
We began our season on Sept 17th by breaking in the brand
rd
new Seniors Drop-In Centre (4800-3 St S) in Boyle by being the very first activity
in the new facility. We now have lots of space and are planning on hosting the
Meridian Zone 2 Spring Dance in Boyle on April 22nd, 2017. Be sure to bookmark
your calendars and reserve that date. Watch for posters with more information in
the near future.
Since our final dance last spring we had a couple of get-togethers at Phil & Jo's;
and provided entertainment for the Lac La Biche Heritage Days and Canada Day
celebrations. We also did a demo and mixer at Grosmont Hall for their Round-Up
Dance. An information table was set up at the Boyle Wildberry Festival and
Athabasca Community Registration Night.
Three couples attended the Canadian Convention in Regina, Saskatchewan and
the Provincial Convention in High River, Alberta. Great fun and renewal of
friendships.
A warm 'Thank you' to our guest caller couple, Glen & Audrey Eliasson for
nd
providing us with a fun-filled and educational afternoon on October 2 .
We had the pleasure of seeing our caller couple, Bob & Ethel Fyfe, receive the
2016 Long Service Award and Medallion at the Convention in High River; as well
as the EDSDA recognition for fifty plus years of dancing and calling.
Congratulations for these well-deserved recognitions; and thank you for all you
have done for us.
Bob & Ethel, along with their assistants, Phil & Jo Sedgwick invite all new and
returning dancers to attend either/or both Athabasca River Ramblers on Friday
evenings or Boyle Twilight Twirlers on Sunday afternoons as the program will be
the same – alternating tips for new and seasoned dancers.
Visitors, spectators, new and seasoned dancers are all welcome. Contact

Welcome back everyone. We hope you enjoyed the summer with
some rest and relaxation mixed in with your summer adventures.
And, again a big thank-you to all the new and returning executive
members who keep our club running smoothly.
A thank-you also to those who have served faithfully and are
stepping down. Your time and efforts are always appreciated.
We began dancing this season on Sept. 27th. We are hoping to welcome some
new dancers again this year. And we look forward to our last season's new
dancers returning to whirl away the winter.
Our last dance will be April 25th, 2017
As always, the last dance of every month will be "club colors" night with Wayne's
singing calls and cake for all the birthdays and anniversaries during that month.
Dec. 13th we will be having our great potluck Christmas dance. The food is
always great and we see many dancing friends from various clubs, as well as
retired members. Looking forward to having many of you join us. Santa Claus
always drops by.
We are planning on having our pig roast supper on Mar. 28th. We hope to see
many of our friends from other clubs visiting then. We will be dancing to two
great callers.
On April 18 and the 25, Festival Place is unavailable. Watch the Promenader to
see where we will be those nights.

We regret to have to inform you of the passing of Doug Wilson on June 13 .
Doug and Ann have danced since 1991 with Murray Few and the LampLighters
and then in 1992 with the Country Cousins.
He loved fiddling with the Wild Rose Fiddlers and entertaining at senior
residences.
Our condolences go out to Ann and his family.
And as Thanksgiving comes along once again, here's a warm wish from the
Country Cousins to all of you ... Have a Happy Thanksgiving!
May all the good things in your life flourish this season and all year round.

SQUARE DANCE CLUB
A DIFFERENT START TO OUR 2016 – 2017 SEASON
Usually by the start of our 2016 – 17 CSSDC Square Dance season, in late September, we have hosted 5 or 6
promotional square dances at local Farmer’s Markets to entice non-square dancers to join our Fast – Track learn to
Square Dance program. We have hosted a Fast –Track program for the past 4 years. So this year , the membership
of the CSSDC decided on a change in direction.
So what is happening at the Country Sunshiners Square Dance Club this season?
We are hosting an Accelerated Mainstream Dance program. The purposes of this new program will be to
improve the level, complexity and tempo of dancing of our Club Mainstream dancers. Our Club Instructor – Murray
Few has commented that this program will be a challenge for each of us as we progress through the ever
increasing complexity of the program. He promises that it will be fast paced and also be a lot of fun.
Already a couple of dances into this new program, I have found myself dancing on the wrong side of my partner
and as a result doing moves in different directions and even having to think about what I am suppose to be doing
while square dancing. The speed of our club dancing has increased also. So I guess the new program is working
for me and I suspect. for others too, as sometimes it is very quiet on the dance floor during a tip.
The CSSDC would like to extend an invitation to other Mainstream dancers in the Edmonton Square Dance
community who are interested in improving the level and performance of their mainstream dancing. Please join us
on Friday evening starting at 7:00 pm at the Duggan Community League Hall. We are a couple of dances into this
program so come and join us as soon as possible to improve the level, complexity and te mpo of your mainstream
dancing. And to have a lot of fun too.
Be Square!

teaching with our new dancers and continues to challenge our mainstream
group. Come and join us for our Rodeo Dance on Nov.14 with guest caller
Bill DeGroot. He might even bring his cow dung again.

Kick-a-Poo Kids
Hello and welcome back to another season of
dancing and fun.
As most of you know the club was saddened with
the passing of Barbara Horricks in July. Barbara
always had an inviting smile and a hug for you; she will be dearly
missed, but now is reunited with her love, Bud.
For the rest of the summer our members took part in attending
summer dances, campouts and conventions and enjoyed every
minute of dancing and camaraderie.
Jack Spence, Ed Clish and Ernie Powers from our club were among
the many that were honored for fifty years of calling and dancing this
September, what a great event of entertainment. Congratulations to
all!!
Again this season we are privileged to have guest callers for our
weekly dances. We appreciate the effort and time these callers are
giving us, Thank You.

Lukes and Lucys
By the time you read this, the new dance season should
be in full swing. Hopefully we have a few couples taking
advantage of the outstanding instruction of Wayne
Russell, alternating and coordinating with Murray Few
from 7 pm Thursdays, at St Edmonds church, corner of
116 St and 132 Ave. Full Plus later that same evening.
We enjoyed the Alberta convention. Thanks to the
ever reliable Serras for getting up early to represent
Lukes and Lucys at the banner parade. We were there to
learn any tips for registering and recruiting for the 2017
version, to be held at Central Lions Senior complex next September long
weekend. Cheryl and I won't be available til mid Nov. At that time I'm
plotting to survey for folks who would be interested in billeting visiting
dancers.
Expect to hear more of LnL's Christmas dance, 15 Dec. Feel free to
mark your calendars.

Morinville Yellowrock Dancers
Where does the time go? Another beautiful
spring and summer just flew by like the cat out
the window after it peed on the floor. The
Yellowrock club did well this summer putting on
good shows in the Morinville and Westlock
Parades. Special thanks go out to Jean and John
for always hauling the trailer out bright and
early, all the crew for the set up and tear down and Diane and Al for
bringing the generator to power up our music. It's inspiring to see such
good team work. We had a lovely lunch and visit at the extended care home
in Westlock following the parade. During the dance demo we were even
able to fill a square with Lodge staff for an entertaining square dance
lesson. Everyone enjoyed the fun and laughs. Speaking of laughs, our
annual summer BBQ was well attended again this year and it's always a
treat having the Kick a Poo Kids join us. The pot luck supper was fantastic
and the entertaining games provided lots of laughter. I've never seen such a
willing group ready to play so many silly games. We are all kids at heart. A
few changes have been made in regards to our dance space this fall due to a
rent increase, but we still have lots of room in this fine facility. Yellowrock
dancers are well known throughout the area for their joyful enthusiasm and
I anticipate another wonderful and fun filled dance season ahead. See you
on the dance floor (those of you who haven't gone south)!

Sandholm Crossroads Dancers
am hoping everyone had a wonderful
summer and everyone is ready for another
awesome season for square dancing. As I
begin to reflect on the past memories of Sandholm Crossroads
dancers I am reminded that this club has been dancing for 20 years.
It is anexciting year for our club and we are hoping that all our
friends from other clubs can be part of this celebration. We are
planning on a special Fundraiser event for Saturday May 13
which will celebrate our anniversary.
I
Well first off I want to say a big thank-you to all who came out to our
big fundraiser event and campout. It was such a wonderful time
seeing you all,at these two events. These events would not be a
success, if not for the attendance and support of the other clubs.
This year we are continuing to seek out new dancers, and continue
to work with the new dancers we currently have, We look forward to
visiting our surrounding clubs and we look forward to seeing you .
We are starting at 7:00pm every thursday evening. I would also like
to welcome everyone to our annual Christmas Potluck and Dance on
Dec 15th and our New Dancers Jamboree on April 8th.

St. Peter's 2x4's
Another year of square dancing is now
in full swing. Hope you had a good summer
of dancing at the camp-outs and at the two
big Conventions
Our first dance got off on a slow start, a
lot of the old members are back. Our club is
sad about losing one of our prominent
members “Hope Pennock”, she was one of the quiet leaders
of the club. She introduced clogging as a part of our
program. Forever missed. But the clogging continues as a
reminder. Hopefully, we can encourage a few beginners to
join us in the near future.
Our format of dancing has not changed. It is the same
as last year. We are looking forward to our Halloween
dance, see you on a dance floor.

Indians ask their new chief whether the winter will be cold or mild. Since
the young chief never learned the ways of his ancestors, he tells them to
collect firewood, then he goes off and calls the National Weather Service.'
'Will the winter be bad?'' he asks.’
'Looks like it,'' is the answer. So the chief tells his people to gather more
firewood. A week later, he calls again.
''Are you positive the winter will be very cold?'’
‘'Absolutely.'’
The chief tells his people to gather even more firewood, then calls the
Weather Service again: ''Are you sure?'’
''I'm telling you, it's going to be the coldest winter on record.''
‘'How do you know?''
''Because the Indians are gathering firewood like crazy!''

A great start to the year at West Edmonton Promenaders!
Several new dancers have turned out for the 12–week New
Square Dance Program, designed to teach 50 square dance
moves in 12 two-hour sessions. After the program finishes, the
dancers will be able to pick up the remainder of the moves
during mainstream dancing. It is interesting, active, and fastpaced and an enjoyable program for everyone. Caller Gary
ensures that this will continue.
WEP has many special dances planned for the upcoming year,
and we hope that everyone can join us on those occasions.
Visitors are always welcome at any time of the year!
We hope to see you at our Hallowe'en dance in October, our
Food Bank dance in November, our Christmas Pot-luck dance in
December, our Welcome 2017 dance in January, our Valentine's
dance in February, and our 50's dance in March!

A woman rubs a lamp and out pops a genie. ''You're a kind
lady, so I'll grant you one wish,'' the genie tells her. ''See this
cat? I'd rather have a strong, handsome man,'' she says. The
genie agrees and – poof! – the cat turns into a Brad Pitt
clone. The woman leaps into his lap. ''Do you have anything
to say before we make love?'' she asks. ''Yes,'' he says. ''I bet
you wish you hadn't had me neutered last week.''

Wild Rose Country Dancers
Here we go again with another fun year of Clogging and
Ballroom with a Twist (Round Dancing).
Many of us enjoyed the summer with our National
Convention in Regina and our Provincial Convention in
High River.
We were devastated in August by the loss of Hope Pennock, the lady who brought
clogging to Alberta and was such an active supporter of all of our dance forms.
This dance year we are clogging at Westend Seniors Activity Centre (WSAC); and doing
Ballroom with a Twist (round dancing) at SEESA and at WSAC, as follows:
CLOGGING – Our class for experienced cloggers continues at WSAC Thursday mornings.
ROUND DANCING – We're calling it 'Ballroom with a Twist' now. The twist is that it is
cued. We are running a “learn to two step” class at both SEESA and WSAC.
Our SEESA “cha cha/rumba” class begun this past year continues with a review and learning
more figures and dances.
Our “experienced” class at WSAC is for dancers with phase two waltz & two step
experience, as well as some rumba, cha cha and foxtrot. In the fall we will add to our phase
three figures in waltz, two step and foxtrot, and begin an introduction to mambo.
Please check out the times and days in the Club Info Index section at the back. You might
want to give the undersigned a call if you still have questions.
Come dance with us! Thursdays at WSAC and Fridays at SEESA. All daytime classes.
