St Marys auction brochure 2011
Welcome to our Twenty-Sixth St. Mary’s School Auction, “Disco Ball”
Reflecting on the last twenty-five auctions and what a privilege it has been to
work with so many dedicated and talented individuals, I recall the very first auction that
was held at our school. St. Mary’s School was a pace setter in the Tri-Cities, as we
were the first to have a fundraising auction of this type in the area. The concept came
to us from a new parent to St. Mary’s, who had moved to Johnson City from Texas. A
small committee of less than ten held the auction in the old St. Mary’s School gym, and
raised around $5,000.00. We were blessed then with wonderful volunteers, and that
tradition carries on with us today.
Our children, and all children are such priceless treasures. This twenty-sixth
Auction, as always is a celebration of our students and of our school community. We
reflect upon our past, with fond memories and feelings of success, we celebrate the
present and look forward to the future, our children.
This commemorative evening is a labor of love. The Home and School Officers
and volunteers have worked hard to make this event a success. Hundreds of hours
have been sacrificed to bring us all together for this special occasion. The unending
assistance of our Home and School Officers and volunteers is very much appreciated
and hopefully in some way it has been self rewarding as well.
The Auction Committee would like to express a special thank you to the
contributors and advertisers for their support. This auction would not be possible without
the generous support of the community in which we live. Please be sure to show your
appreciation to these people when you frequent their business.
We hope you enjoy our “Disco Ball!”
God Bless,
Randi McKee

delicious gourmet dessert and a bottle of champagne served only to your table tonight.
Master Chef Jean-Claude Seruga has created both an individual Crème Brulee and an
Omelette Norvegienne - a Norwegian Baked Alaska - for each guest. Jean-Claude stuffs a
cake with vanilla and pistachio ice cream then covers it with meringue and brings it to the
table to flambé in front of your guests. He will be using rum to create the flame, but it
should be noted that the alcohol does burn off. Jean-Claude Seruga was born in Paris and
began his "formal" training in the culinary arts as a young boy in the French capital. After
apprenticing to and receiving mentoring from many of France's premier chefs, Jean-Claude
was selected to serve as the Head Chef at Le Paris Parm in Paris. Before leaving France to
come to the United States, he was honored with several culinary recognitions,
memberships, and awards.

103 Eighth Grade Class Art
Value: Priceless! - Paper marbling is a centuries old tradition although the techniques
were always kept secret to foil the competition. Beautiful papers have been made in
Turkey, India and Persia since the 15th century. Marble-like designs are created by
floating colored inks on water and transferring them to absorbent paper or fabric. In the
1970's there was a renewed interest in paper marbling. Mrs. Harroll's 8th graders
learned the processes of paper marbling using suminasgashi inks. The students
approached each new piece of paper as a challenge to learn how to control the patterns
created by the swirling ink. These papers reflect their determination to make beautiful
pieces of art.
Donor: Anne Reid & Mrs. Harroll's 8th Grade Class
104 Quail Hunt for Two
Value: $1,000 - Point of Neuse Plantation, located in Lenoir County, North Carolina,

Carolina hunting license. Hunt dates to be arranged with the donor and must be scheduled
during the 2011-2012 quail hunting season.

Part 2
201 Kindergarten Class Art
Value: Priceless! -With the new craft movements of the 1970's, quilting techniques
became prominent in the making of fine arts. Artists and designers of the time began
creating designs based on their own experiences, surroundings and ideas rather than
traditional patterns. Car names of the 1970's were used to spark the imagination of Mrs.
Booth's kindergarten class when creating this masterpiece. Each student was given the
name of a 1970's car and then was told to draw their own interpretation of the word. The
drawings were then used by Deborah Soike, a former St. Mary's parent, to produce this
beautiful quilt.
Donor: Anne Reid & Mrs. Booth's Kindergarten Class and Deborah Soike
202 Seventh Grade "EASTER" Egg Platter
Value: Priceless! -Display 24 eggs on this 12" egg platter that has been artfully decorated

Donor: Mrs. Booze's 7th Grade Families
203 Fourth Grade Class Art
Value: Priceless! -Ms. Goodhard's 4th grade class has created a project based on the
ancient art form of batik, a traditional craft involving a wax resist dyeing technique in fabric

movement" that was popular during the 1970's, each student used glue resist and paint to
produce these "groovy" pieces of art.

212 Second Grade Class Art
Value: Priceless! -Printmaking is the process of making artworks by printing, normally on
paper. Printmaking normally covers only the process of creating prints with an element of
originality, rather than just being a photographic reproduction of a painting. Mrs. Lyons'
2nd grade class experimented with several forms of printmaking this year. They ultimately
settled on block print using Styrofoam plates which they then used to create prints that
were inspired by two popular themes of the 1970's - joy and peace.
Donor: Anne Reid & Mrs. Lyons' 2nd Grade Class
