Heartbeat Humanitarian Fund Offers More than
Financial Support
When Chanda Goldin joined Heartbeat,
she liked the idea of supporting co-workers
with the Humanitarian Fund. “I remember
signing up for Heartbeat during new
employee orientation because I wanted to
contribute for others,” Goldin explained. “I
never thought that we would need help.”
Then, the unthinkable happened. Her
two-year old son, Garrett, was diagnosed
with leukemia. With that diagnosis came
months of treatment and unexpected
financial burdens. Goldin was nominated
for the Heartbeat Humanitarian Fund and
soon received financial assistance.
“Heartbeat really helped us,” she said. “Not
only financially, but emotionally, to think
of all of these wonderful people who have
made a donation to help somebody else.”
Garrett is now four years old and his
prognosis is very positive. Goldin explained
that the support she and her family
received from Heartbeat went well beyond
financial. “The love and support we have
felt from everyone at Tanner, it isn’t like
at a corporate job where you don’t know
or care about your co-workers,” she said.
“Everyone has been so caring. This is
something that I will never forget.”
Humanitarian Fund
The Heartbeat Humanitarian Fund
provides a way for employees to help
when a co-worker experiences an
unexpected crisis. The Humanitarian
Fund guidelines and application
form are accessible through Tanner’s
Intranet. From the home page,
click on “Departments,” then select
“Foundation.” Click on the Heartbeat
link. After reading the guidelines, print
and send the completed application
form to Tanner Medical Foundation.

There is Nothing Like Help From Co-workers
Jamey Willis, of Tanner Health System
Security, received help from the Heartbeat
humanitarian fund after his wife was
diagnosed with ovarian cancer. “This
came out of nowhere,” said Willis. “My wife
was unable to work and I was wondering
how we were going to be able to survive.”
Within days of his nomination, he had been
assisted. “It was amazing! It was a blessing,”
he said.
Today, his wife is cancer-free and Willis
is grateful for the support of Tanner
Heartbeat supporters. “Without the help,
I don’t know what I would have done,” he
said. It took a lot of pressure off knowing
that someone was there to help me.
Even though I had family and friends,
there is nothing like your co-workers
helping you.”

Holiday Assistance General Program
Program
Fund
The General Program fund is the third
option available for employees to select
for their Heartbeat donations. This fund
provides non-budgeted programs and
equipment that will enhance patient care
and/or make the employee’s job easier. The
following allocations were approved from
the Heartbeat General Program Fund this
year:
Indigent Care
Fund
The Heartbeat Indigent Care Fund
assists patients who are unable to afford
their medications, diagnostic tests or
cardiac rehabilitation services. This year,
164 patients were assisted with their
medications and 184 patients were
assisted with transportation to and from
the hospital through a taxi fund.

TMC/Carrollton pediatrics unit
Do you have a co-worker who is
experiencing hardships? You can help
them by nominating them for Tanner’s
Heartbeat Holiday Assistance program.
The Heartbeat Holiday Assistance program
brings a little extra joy to the holiday
season for team members who would
benefit from a gift of groceries.
In November each year, Tanner
departments are invited to nominate
an employee to receive a $100 grocery
gift card through the Heartbeat Holiday
Assistance program. There is no specific
requirement that has to be met, and each
department within Tanner Health System
may nominate a team member in your
department, or even another department,
who has a need.
Last year, 109 employees were nominated
and helped with a $100 grocery gift cards
in December. If you work with someone
who could benefit from this program,
please suggest a nomination to your
department director. Nomination forms
will be sent to department directors by
mid-November and the deadline for
nominations will be in December.
Cancer Care Fund
Tanner employees may choose to support
the Cancer Care Fund with the second
half of their Heartbeat donations. The
Cancer Care Fund provides funding for
cancer programs, services and assistance
for patients.

Much More Than a Blanket Warmer
Tanner Heart & Vascular Specialists received funding for a blanket
warmer from Heartbeat’s General Program Fund
If patients in Tanner Heart & Vascular
Specialists seem a little happier, it may
because of the department’s new
blanket warmer.
Room temperatures are kept cool to
ensure equipment used for diagnostic
ultrasounds and other testing will function
at their best. “We have a lot of elderly
patients, and even younger
patients who are on blood
thinners, who come in for tests
and get cold,” said Paula Tant, LPN.
“Patients asked why it was so
cool, so we figured out a way
to warm the patient without
warming the room.”

help comfort and soothe Tanner Heart
and Vascular patients.
Heartbeat’s General Program fund
provided funding for the blanket
warmer and brought relief to patients
and staff alike. “We found out that it’s
much more than a warm blanket. It’s a
real comfort to our patients,” said Tant.
“If there is something that helps make a
patient more calm, it makes it a lot easier
for everyone.”

Heartbeat Helps in Pediatrics
Coming into the pediatric treatment room for a
procedure at Tanner Medical Center/Carrollton may
seem a little scary for our youngest patients … until
they see a trusted friend there to keep them company.
It may be Scooby Doo, SpongeBob Squarepants or
even a Disney princess who helps distract them from a
painful procedure.
“The patient comes in
and we are about to
start their IV which can
be painful,” explained
Cindy Strong, RN. “So
we turn our TV on and
we find something that
would be enjoyable to
them. For some kids, it
can really soothe them.”
The television was
purchased with funds
from Heartbeat’s General
Program fund.
“I remember we had
a child, she was about
three years old and
she was very upset
because her Mom had chosen
not to come with her into the
treatment room,” said Hope
Velez, RN. “We turned on the TV
and SpongeBob was on while
we started her IV. It calmed her
down tremendously.”

“One of the things that is proven to decrease anxiety
and pain in children is distraction,” explained Linda
Connor, RN, director of nursing at Tanner Medical
Center/Carrollton. “TV is a form of distraction. If we can
put something on the TV that they are familiar with or
that comforts them, then that is the goal.”
“Heartbeat has been really wonderful to pediatrics,”
said Strong. “We’re so thankful for the TV and videos
Heartbeat provided. It even helped us purchase socks
to help keep the pulse oximeter probes (a non-invasive
method of monitoring a patient’s hemoglobin) on our
babies’ toes and keep their feet warm. If you are a child
and you’ve got to be in the hospital, all of these things
make it a better place to be.”
