Sport Clips Haircuts celebrates 1,500th store milestone in
founder’s hometown by giving back to area youth
SUMTER, S.C (Apr. 28, 2016) –
Sport Clips Haircuts celebrated
the opening of its
1,500th location, which happens
to be in Founder and CEO
Gordon Logan’s hometown of
Sumter, S.C., by giving back to
area youth. The milestone
opening was marked with a
$15,000 donation to Toys for Tots
to provide gifts to children in the
state’s Sumter, Lee and
Clarendon counties. The
contribution from Sport Clips will
enable the Marines of Detachment 1202 to put Christmas smiles on the faces of
approximately 3,000 additional children in the local area.
Sport Clips Haircuts Founder and CEO Gordon Logan, and his wife Bettye, and local
Team Leaders (franchisees) Zach and Sharon Payer presented the gift check to Harvey
Senter, Toys for Tots regional coordinator, before a crowd of local dignitaries and
guests at the store, located at 2621 Broad Street.
“Growing up here, I never imagined that my life would come full-circle, with the growth
of Sport Clips bringing us to this day – the celebration of our 1,500th location, right here
in my home town, surrounded by so many great friends. This is a special celebration for
me… It’s a homecoming to the place where family and friends taught me about life, hard
work and planted the seeds of entrepreneurship,” says Logan. “The fact that the brand
my wife and I started in 1993 has a ‘sports theme’ likely took root when I was the sports
editor here for the Edmunds High School newspaper. The Air Force took me to Texas,
but I will always think of Sumter as home.
“Giving back through donations such as this is how we at Sport Clips put our values in
action. We call it ‘haircuts with heart.’ We chose Toys for Tots for several reasons, one
of them being the value it brings to children and families in the local community, and its
close ties with military involvement. Sport Clips supports numerous veterans’ efforts,
and you’ll see those in our store here in Sumter and all across the country. We happy to
be a part of this community I call my hometown and in so many other neighborhoods
and communities across the U.S. and in Canada.”
On hand for the event were Sumter Mayor Joe McElveen; City Manager Deron
McCormick; Sumter County Chairman Vivian McGhaney and other County Council
Members; County Administrator Gary Mixon; City of Sumter Chief of Police Russell
Roark; Sheriff of Sumter County Anthony Dennis and other community leaders and
citizens. Sport Clips Vice President of Marketing, Martha England attended, as well as
Sport Clips Area Developers Eric and Rosemary Gozur.
As part of the opening celebration, the Sumter Sport Clips offered a free haircut in
exchange for a new, unwrapped toy donation leading up the event. As an active part of
the community, the Sumter Sport Clips will continue to participate in local and national
philanthropies, as well as contribute to the local economy and provide jobs for around a
dozen stylists and team members.

Sport Clips Haircuts celebrates franchise growth, system strength
and philanthropy at National Huddle
Founder and CEO shaves head and beard for a good cause
SAN ANTONIO (Apr. 5, 2016) – Sport Clips Haircuts, the nation’s leading men’s and
boys’ hair care franchise, celebrated growth, strength as a system, and philanthropic
outreach at its recent National Huddle convention. More than 2,700 team members from
the U.S. and Canada attended the event themed “Ignite,” that featured nationallyrecognized guest speakers; company highlights; and even the founder and CEO,
president, and vice president of operations shaving their heads for a good cause.
Founder and CEO Gordon Logan and President Mark Kartarik, shared in their “State of
Sport Clips” address:
• Sport Clips averaged opening around three stores per week in 2015. Across the
country and in Canada, 152 stores opened ending the year with 1,455 locations.
• The Bangor, Maine store opening in June made Sport Clips the first hair care
franchise to have a presence in all 50 states.
• Logan says the company will focus on recruitment and retention of additional
professional stylists. Sport Clips franchises and company-owned stores are
expected to provide more than 16,500 jobs in local communities by the end of the
year.
• The success of Sport Clips franchise locations as contributors to local economies is
the result of same store sales increases (for stores open more than one year,) up
eight percent in 2015 over 2014.
• Sport Clips continues to grow its philanthropic reach and signed on to be the first
national partner for St. Baldrick’s Foundation, pledging to donate more than $1
million over three years to the fight against childhood cancer. To signify the
partnership, a “Shave the Day” head shaving attempt was part of the Huddle,
during which Logan, Kartarik and Gordon Edward Logan had their heads shaved.
The event exceeded its $50,000 fundraising goal with more than $113,000 raised
for childhood cancer research.
• Help A Hero, the franchise’s signature philanthropy, is among its many military
support efforts. This year Sport Clips team members, clients and partners
donated more than $910,000 to the Veterans of Foreign Wars for active-duty
service member and veteran scholarships. Since 2014, Sport Clips’ Help A Hero
campaign has made possible 425 scholarships to help veterans transition from
military to civilian careers through education.
“Hard work and enthusiasm for our successful business model is what makes Sport
Clips the strong system we celebrate,” Logan says. “We chose the theme ‘Ignite’
because we want to fire up team members to continue to improve the client experience
and enlighten others about our growing team and how they can become a part of it.
“We also want to shine a light on the good our team members and partners are doing
through philanthropy, both locally and nationally,” Logan later said. “We feel so strongly
about it, Mark, the president, Gordon Edward, our vice president of operations, and I
were willing to lose our hair to prove it. We were some of the first to sign up for the head
shaving event, and I’m glad we had a way to demonstrate how important philanthropy is
to us.
Whether it’s shaving heads for St. Baldrick’s, blood donations through our American
Red Cross partnership or recognizing veterans through the Ageless Aviation Dreams
Foundation and Help A Hero scholarships, Sport Clips is truly about giving haircuts with
heart.”
Guests at the annual gathering included authors and speakers Robert Cromeans of
John Paul Mitchell Systems, Don Hobbs of MAPS Business Training and Sport Clipssponsored Joe Gibbs Racing NASCAR driver Carl Edwards.

One of Sport Clips’ Largest Area
Developers Looks to Continue
Expansion Throughout Illinois,
Missouri and Michigan
Since joining brand in 2004, John
Kohler has helped to bring 130 stores to
Northern Illinois, Eastern Missouri and
Eastern Michigan – and he’s just getting
started
Today, John Kohler is one of the largest area
developers in the entire Sport Clips system.
But if you had asked him a few years ago if he
would ever consider becoming a franchisee,
his answer would have been a resounding
“no.”
Since 1984, Kohler had been a major figure in the corporate world. As the senior vice
president of global operations for telecommunications giant Tellabs, Inc., Kohler had
more than 4,700 workers reporting to his division. But in the early 2000s, when the dotcom bubble burst, the fallout forced the company to start outsourcing tasks to other
countries. Ultimately, Kohler had no choice but to lay off nearly 3,800 of his employees.
The experience wasn’t easy, and Kohler realized it was time to move forward and do
something completely different with his life. He accepted an early retirement package
and began his hunt for the next great business opportunity.
Then, on a day in March 2004, Kohler unexpectedly found himself driving to a seminar
on franchising, which had been arranged by an executive outplacement firm.
“I was hesitant at first, and I remember reluctantly driving to that seminar,” Kohler said.
“Now when I look back, I’m so glad I saw it through to the end. I was so inspired by the
broker I met that day. He presented me with a total of eight different franchise
opportunities that he thought would be a great fit for me, but one in particular stuck with
me—Sport Clips. It was such a simple yet incredibly efficient franchise model. It’s a
cash business, everyone needs a haircut every few weeks, and it’s a service you can’t
outsource.”
By June 2004, Kohler signed on with the brand as an area developer in Northern Illinois.
His goal was to build out the Chicagoland area—a sweeping territory that was untapped
at the time. Development picked up quickly, and three years later, he acquired the rights
to bring Sport Clips to Eastern Missouri. By 2011, he was expanding the brand’s
footprint throughout Eastern Michigan. Today, he oversees more than 130 stores
throughout those three regions.
“It’s crazy to think how about how far things have come since I started with the brand 12
years ago. When I first signed on as an area developer in Northern Illinois, Sport Clips
only had 143 stores. Today they have more than 1,500. What’s even more incredible is
that over the past six years, the brand has only closed five stores,” Kohler said. “This
has been an unbelievably positive and rewarding experience.”
Kohler believes that Sport Clips’ secret to success is its culture. Gordon Logan, the
brand’s founder and CEO, built a system based on one simple principle—just do the
right thing. This means that Sport Clips embraces full transparency. They do whatever it
takes to make sure their franchisees are successful. And they’re always focused on
inspiring every single person in the system to achieve next-level greatness.
“The people who join the Sport Clips team aren’t in this business for the sake of being in
the business. We’re all unified by a common bond—to focus on how we can best serve
our clients. Sport Clips cares deeply about our customer base in whatever we do,”
Kohler added.
Kohler’s goal now is to keep growing alongside a brand that has become his lifeblood
and his passion. As he sets his sights on reaching his 209-store-goal within the next five
to seven years, Kohler will be representing the brand—and its immense opportunity for
growth—at the upcoming International Franchise Expo (IFE) in New York. Between
June 16 and 18, prospective franchisees will be able to explore what exactly a
successful future with Sport Clips could look like.
“I always tell people I haven’t bought a job; I’ve invested in an adventure. My goal is to
run a great brand and a great company. I want to support my employees, develop their
talents and continue to make each and every one of our customers’ days,” Kohler said.
“As we look to continue expanding Sport Clips in the years to come, my goal is to
convey that very message to prospective franchisees. If you are the type of person who
can nurture, create, motivate and inspire a team of professionals, you will be
successful.”

Sport Clips Targeting
Northeast for Next Phase
of Development
Four investors signed a deal to
open 10 locations in Maine and
New Hampshire
Sport Clips Haircuts, the nation's
leading men's and boys' hair care
franchise, is expanding in the
Northeast. Four investors signed a
deal to open 10 locations in Maine
and New Hampshire and Sport Clips
is actively seeking investors for the
rest of the Northeast, primarily
focusing on the New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts markets.
The group behind the Northeast development is Dennis Guerrette, his brothers Will and
Glen, and friend Steve Greenlaw. They opened their first location in Bangor, Maine in
July 2015.
The four are veterans of the franchise industry, owning and operating several different
businesses—including starting Sun Tan City in 2006. The idea to invest in Sport Clips
didn’t come from their prowess in the business, but actually from Glen’s son.
“About two years ago we were looking for opportunities to diversify and investigated
several franchise concepts. Credit goes to Glen’s 12 year-old son who went to a Sport
Clips in Arizona and declared to his Mom that he would never go anyplace else to get
his hair cut,” Dennis Guerrette said. “The opportunity to grow and develop a brand that
clearly understood its own market differentiation (Championship Haircut Experience for
Men and Boys in a Sports-Themed Environment) was intriguing to us.”
The group was responsible for introducing the haircut franchise to Maine for the first
time. Dennis serves as the Team Leader for the group, dealing with the day-to-day
operations of the business. He said Steve, Will and Glen have other jobs, but still
contribute to matters and decisions regarding real estate, marketing and multi-unit
development advice.
One of the reasons why Dennis and his group decided to invest was because of the
support system the franchisor provided.
“Since I have no experience in the haircutting industry, I was impressed how strong the
franchise support was from training to coaching to even a National Huddle,” Dennis
said. “Sport Clips’ strong values, culture and brand sold us on this investment. They
truly understand who they are, what they have to offer and how to win in the
marketplace.”
Dennis said they are planning on opening new stores in Waterville and Biddeford,
Maine in the coming months.
The brand is also targeting several other locations in the Northeast for development,
including New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts.
