A RE YOU 60 OR O LDE R?
DO YOU HAVE TROUBLE
FALLING ASLEEP
OR STAYING ASLEEP?
OR ARE YOU A GOOD SLEEPER?
Dear Friends,
Welcome to Buddy - The Buddy Holly Story, the rock and roll musical about the life and times of a
young performer who, by the tender age of 21, had already emerged onto the 1950s-era American
music scene having written, recorded and produced the mega hit songs “That’ll Be the Day” and
“Peggy Sue.”
His name was Charles Hardin Holley, a singer-songwriter-guitarist from Lubbock, Texas. Known
popularly as Buddy Holly, he gained momentous fame in 1957 before dying in a plane crash just
two years later alongside Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson ‘the Big Bopper,’ and the pilot. This
event was immortalized in pop culture in Don McLean’s 1971 song “American Pie,” an ode to
Holly’s life and the crash, or “the day the music died.” Holly was just 22 years old. The stage
version of his life, Buddy - The Buddy Holly Story debuted on Broadway in 1990, having first
opened in 1989 in London’s West End, where it ran for more than 12 years. This jukebox musical
continues to be a favorite of audiences around the world.
The University of Pittsburgh is conducting a research study of people who
have trouble sleeping as well as healthy adults who sleep well to learn
more about insomnia and how it is affected by a nonmedication treatment.
To be eligible, you must be 60 or older and:
• have difficulty falling or staying asleep or feel poorly rested after sleeping
• or be a good sleeper at night and not feel sleepy during the daytime
By sharing your time and participating, you may be able to help researchers
find out more about improving sleep and quality of life in later years.
Participants will be
compensated for their time.
For more information, please
call toll free, 1-866-647-8283
or e-mail [email protected].
I’d like to thank each and every one of you for being our most wonderful audience, and I look
forward to seeing those of you who are Pittsburgh CLO Season Ticket Holders back for Disney’s
The Lion King, presented by special arrangement with The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust. I also hope to
see everyone very soon at the CLO Cabaret, where we’re currently reprising the comedy Defending
the Caveman. (Seriously, laughing just never gets old.) I also hope to see you throughout the
year at one of our education and community outreach programs, Gallery of Heroes musical tours
in local schools or at the CLO Academy, where our city’s young performers are busy honing their
skills. And, a reminder: It’s not too early to get your tickets to our 22nd annual production of
A Musical Christmas Carol, playing at the Byham Theater December 6-22.
Finally, I’d like to extend a very special thank you to our 24 interns who rolled up their sleeves to
help us produce this action-packed summer. Most of them are returning to school, and my staff
and I wish them well in their studies and hope they don’t forget us when they’re famous. Musical
theater is a team sport that takes all the right people to pull off well. Whether you bought a
ticket, showed patrons to their seats, teased a wig, moved a prop, played a horn, designed a
brochure or took notes for a director, thank you for an incredibly rewarding 2013 season.
Enjoy the show!

WHO’S WHO in the COMPANY
PRINCIPALS
KURT JENKINS (Buddy Holly/Tommy Allsup) has
always remembered his grandfather’s words:
“You can give in, you can give out, but NEVER
give up.” With that quote in mind, Kurt is
gratefully delighted to be a part of the North
American tour of Buddy! Theater credits include:
Godspell (Jesus), The Fantasticks (Matt), Desire
Under The Elms (Eben) and Bat Boy (Bat Boy).
In addition to theater, Kurt has studied Film
Production at the University of Central Florida
(B.F.A.) and performs his original music under
the name Skyway Spirit (skywayspirit.com). Kurt
would like to thank his friends and family for
their encouragement, patience and tough love.
ANDY CHRISTOPHER (Buddy Holly/Tommy Allsup)
first picked up a guitar in 2010 while working
as an EMT in Lubbock, TX. Under the tutelage of
John Banister and Eddy Weir (Buddy’s nephew),
he learned how to play it and is now elated to
be joining his truly extraordinary castmates
in Buddy! Regional: Buddy - The Buddy Holly
Story (Buddy), Irving Berlin’s White Christmas (Phil
Davis), Godspell (Jesus), and Edges. He would
like to thank this cast and crew, Jockey, and
especially Dad, Mom, Keylee, Matt and Allie for

JOE COSMO COGEN (Jerry Allison) couldn’t
be more thrilled to be part of the Buddy
North American tour! This will be Joe’s sixth
production of Buddy. Was last seen in the role of

his third production taking the stage as Ritchie,
as well as multiple performances with tribute
bands across the U.S., including John Mueller’s

5th Annual Jimmy™ Awards:
A Hit on Broadway
High school musicals give many students their first
taste of the world of musical theater, and some just
can’t get enough once they’ve caught the theater bug.
The nation’s top young performers were honored at the
fifth annual National High School Musical Theater
Awards (NHSMTA) on July 1 at Broadway’s Minskoff
Theatre in New York City. This program, a project of
Pittsburgh CLO and the Broadway Education Alliance,
aims to encourage students in the performing arts
by providing unique access to the Broadway industry.
This year, 62 high school students
represented 31 regional awards
programs from coast to coast.
Constructing
a Reputation for Excellence
The Tony Award®-nominated stars of Broadway’s
Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella, Laura Osnes
and Santino Fontana, hosted this year’s show.
The 2013 Jimmy™ Awards were awarded to Sarah
Lynn Marion from the John Raitt Awards for Youth and
Taylor Varga from Connecticut High School Musical
Theater Awards. Sarah and Taylor received a $10,000
scholarship from the Nederlander Organization toward
their educations and are eligible for four-year merit and
need-based scholarship assistance
to attend the New Studio on
Broadway at NYU Tisch School of
the Arts Department of Drama,
contingent upon acceptance into
the program. Five runners-up each
received $2,500 scholarships
to further their educations from
the Barry and Fran Weissler
Foundation. Awards were also
presented for Best Performance
in an Ensemble, Most Improved
and the Spirit of the Jimmy
Awards, and one student was
chosen to attend Carnegie Mellon
University’s 6-week Pre-College
2013 Jimmy™ Award Winners
Drama program.
The NHSMTA program began in 2009
and has been providing students with
unforgettable experiences ever since.
Aspiring performers from across the
country gathered in the Big Apple
for a week of group rehearsals and
private coaching sessions with some
of the musical theater industry’s

Nothing brings a stage production to life quite
like a show’s set. It is essential to telling a
story and setting the scene. Pittsburgh CLO’s
Construction Center for the Arts is Pittsburgh’s
very own professional set building facility, and
has played an important role in creating the
sets used for this production of Buddy - The
Buddy Holly Story. Located in Springdale, PA, the
Construction Center has created the scenery for
productions across the country since 1974.
A team of professional designers, artists,
carpenters and technical staff have been hard
at work preparing for Pittsburgh CLO’s 2013
Summer Season. They built the impressive Set of Side by Side by Sondheim set | Photo: Matt Polk
1950s-inspired set you see here today, complete
with everything from the elaborate network of microphones hanging from the recording studio ceiling to the
brightly lit “Apollo” sign during Buddy’s famed performance at the Apollo Theater. It was all created right here
in Pittsburgh.
The Construction Center has built the sets and scenery for Pittsburgh CLO shows like A Musical Christmas
Carol and for CLO Cabaret shows such as Side by Side by Sondheim, as well as for local companies and
events including KDKA-TV, the Three Rivers Arts Festival, the Carnegie Science Center and the National
Aviary. In addition, the Construction Center stores and rents high-quality sets that give theater companies
and schools the opportunity to use professional sets.
This unique facility has more than 68,000 square feet of storage and workspace that can accommodate
productions of any size. Its convenient location close to downtown Pittsburgh makes it a prime building space
for productions from across the country. The Center has built sets for National Tours including 9 to 5: The
Musical and Disney’s High School Musical, concert tours for the Rolling Stones and Michael Jackson, and for
television and film productions.
Set construction for Buddy - The Buddy Holly Story
The Construction Center is one of the largest and
most cost efficient of its kind in the nation, playing an
instrumental role in both local and national productions.
The Center’s top-notch professionals work together each
year to create the sets and scenery that ensure each
show is one to remember.
