News
A challenging financial environment continued into the 2010-11
program year. Thanks to careful stewardship, conservative spending,
and generous support, LV-Bangor completed the year in the black.
An unexpected $10,000 gift from the estate of Peter J. Mozden, MD
was also a welcome surprise in late spring. LV-Bangor remains a
good philanthropic value with the cost of serving an adult student
at only $308 per year!
We gratefully acknowledge
the generous financial
support from these and other
corporate sponsors, and to
all of our many individual
supporters, we say thank you!
In FY11, LV-Bangor helped 238 adults improve their literacy.
53% are learning English as another language while 47% are
improving their reading and writing skills. Other interesting statistics
about our student population include:
• 59% of our student population are women
Contributing Writer
• 64% of all students have a high school diploma, GED, or less education
Anita Kurth
• 55% of our students are ages 25-44 years; 26% are ages 45-59
Frances Hollis Brain Foundation
• 277 volunteers donated more than 16,000 hours of service at a
community value of $265,000!

Literacy
MATTERS
Advancing Literacy in the Bangor Area Community Fall 2011
Meet Some of the LV-Bangor Stars
Stars
PEOPLE ARE THE
STRENGTH OF
LITERACY VOLUNTEERS
OF BANGOR.
Adult students come to LV-Bangor
motivated to learn. Volunteer tutors
are dedicated to honoring their
students’ dream of improving their
reading and English skills. And
private supporters make the
work at LV-Bangor possible.
At our Annual Recognition Night on
June 7th, 130 students, volunteers,
staff, and guests celebrated the
standouts among the many who
engage the transformative power
of literacy.
This issue focuses on those stars.
While they sparkle brightly, many
more labor quietly to help themselves
and others.
With no government funding,
LV-Bangor relies on private
investments from our community.
Imagine: you can change lives,
like the ones on these pages,
by supporting literacy today. In
doing so, you’ll help more
stars shine.
We could tell hundreds of stories about our students and tutors. Together, they accomplish small
miracles of courage and dedication every day. We thought you’d like to meet a few who represent
the best of what LV-Bangor is all about.
Could you tackle a technical
vocabulary in a second language?
Lee Chapman
@
What if you were also 61 and had just been
laid off from the job you’d held for 20 years?
Korean-born Lee Chapman has worked with
LV-Bangor tutors since 1999, including Carol
Arnold, Ann McKay, and Mary Sweeney.
When her company closed last year, Lee enrolled
in a certified nursing assistant program. People
said her English wasn’t good enough for medical
vocabulary. She proved them wrong; just ask
tutor Joan Brissette, a retired nurse who became
Lee’s most recent tutor.
Lee Chapman (center) celebrates her English language student award with past tutors,
Carol Arnold, Ann McKay, Mary Sweeney, and most recent tutor, Joan Brissette.
Nominated as the English Language Learning Star
this year, Lee, in turn, nominated Joan. What better way to celebrate this new kind of literacy?
Nick Soucy
The Tutor: Remembering Nick Sucy
Tutor Nick Sucy of Old Town was a witty 31-year-old who
enjoyed helping people. He passed away in January 2011
of complications from multiple sclerosis. When Nick’s family
suggested donations instead of flowers, more than $1,200
flowed into LV-Bangor.
At the Annual Recognition Night,
Gamini Nadukankanamge, a
University of Maine student from
Sri Lanka, remembered how
Nick helped him perfect his
English conversation skills,
improve his writing, and
understand American culture.

Hoang Lam
The Keynote Speaker: Hoang Lam
2005: Hoang Lam came to the LV-Bangor office with his
uncle. Nineteen and nervous, he asked for a tutor. His
uncle translated.
2011: Hoang, now an American citizen, graduated from the
University of Maine in Electrical Engineering Technology and
went to work as an engineer at TRC Solutions in Augusta.
That’s a lot of achievement, and a great deal of hard work,
in just six years. That’s why he was this year’s guest speaker at
the Annual Recognition Night. Hoang typifies the drive of those
who recognize the power of literacy and make it their own.
Basic Literacy Student Star: Misty Young and Sue Davis, Tutor
Misty Young would tackle just about anything. She works several jobs and is raising her four-year-old
grandson, Hunter. She wanted to read to him, so she came to LV-Bangor to improve her skills. When
she began working with tutor Sue Davis, her only condition was that she not be asked to write, because
she couldn’t spell.
Just one year later, Misty reads at work when she can. She reads nightly to Hunter, and he “reads” to
her. She is even working on an illustrated journal for him.
And—you guessed it—she took on the biggest challenge of all. She shares her writing and lets Sue
help her with spelling. She and Sue are the 2011 Basic Literacy Student – Tutor Stars!
The Youngest Stars: Area School Children Accept the Challenge
Tutor Phil Locke (center)
received the 2 Those Who
Care Volunteer Award
(John W. Coombs Award
Winner) on Thursday,
October 6, 2011 from
WLBZ 2. Pictured with Phil
are anchors Chris Facchini
and Audry Amann. During
his seven years of service to
LV-Bangor, Phil has worked
one-on-one with more than
20 adults and has donated
more than 2,200 hours of
service!
Literacy
MATTERS
100 minutes of reading = $100. That was the
equation that mattered last winter for one third
grade class at Brewer’s Washington Street
School. Cherrie MacInness’ students accepted
her challenge to read for 100 minutes each to
earn a $100 donation from MacInness Optical
to LV-Bangor.
Cherrie MacInness’ students
At Bangor’s Fourteenth Street School, Joe Bennett’s
5th grade class logged another 100 minutes
each. David Black donated $100 in honor of
literacy tutor Taylor Maynard.
Everyone wins with classroom challenges.
Students have fun. Teachers love the way they
encourage reading. Sponsors know that they’ve
done some good in the world by making a
very efficient investment in learning.

If you or your business would like to sponsor
a classroom challenge, or you know a teacher
who would take one on, just call LV-Bangor
at 947-8451.
