FISCAL YEAR 2015
ANNUAL REPORT
Opportunity for All
We bring the American dream to life by serving the needs of immigrants from Latin America in metro
Atlanta with a full spectrum of services and programs that help families adapt to their new country and
integrate into the community.
A MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
From business education courses to prepare low-income Latinas start their own
microenterprises to mentoring programs that ensure at-risk Latino youth graduate
from high school prepared for college and careers to legal services to help Latino
immigrants become U.S. citizens, the Latin American Association’s (LAA) programs
and services are life-changing and unparalleled.
We help Latinos overcome challenges so they can be all they can be. We offer Latino women, men
and children the tools and resources they need -- including immigration legal services, English classes,
emergency assistance and computer literacy courses in Spanish, among many others – to achieve
their fullest potential, ultimately empowering them to become self-sufficient and thrive.
You play a key role in empowering the 40,000 Latino men, women and children served by the LAA
each year to adapt, integrate and thrive as contributing members of the greater Atlanta community
through your partnership, contributions and financial support. You change the lives of Latino individuals
and families, and in doing so create a better, brighter future for all. For that, we can’t thank you enough.
Upcoming Events
We are thrilled to share with you in this report outcomes and achievements of the past year.

Family Services
Bilingual empowerment coaches in our Family Services Department work closely with immigrant individuals and
families to ensure their basic needs are met and empower them to achieve economic self-sufficiency. Services
include emergency financial assistance, a food pantry and clothing closet, connection to family and work supports,
empowerment coaching, parenting classes and direct referrals or housing, health and other essential services.
This year, Family Services began providing mobile service delivery to ensure critical
yet otherwise unavailable resources are accessible for those most in need of them.
This included service provision in Athens, Gainesville, Dalton and other Latinopopulous locations across north and central Georgia.
Of families served, 82% achieved economic self-sufficiency within three months

Youth Programs
Our staff works diligently to ensure that at-risk Latino youth in metro Atlanta graduate from high school prepared
for college and careers. We operate the Latino Youth Leadership Academy at six Title I public middle and high
schools in DeKalb and Gwinnett Counties to provide year-round afterschool and summer programming for
students, parent engagement and educator training.
Over 2,000 Latino middle and high school students, parents and teachers
from 92 schools across Georgia participated in the Latino Youth Leadership
Conference held November 8, 2014 on the campus of The Westminster
Schools. This annual event motivates and inspires students to achieve their
educational goals and provides parents and educators the resources they
need to support student success.
88% middle school students improved or maintained A’s and B’s
in core subjects of math, science and English language arts
95% of high school students surveyed said they now
know they can and will graduate from high school
7 teacher trainings informed 756 educators
about best practices in Latino youth education
In FY15, we launched the Latino College Leadership Alliance for college students and young
professionals. This program empowers Latino young adults to become leaders through
service learning, civic engagement and professional development opportunities.
Throughout the day, students learned about scholarship and financial aid
opportunities, received assistance with college applications, prepped for the
SAT and much more. They also participated in career explorer workshops
hosted by the conference’s 22 corporate sponsors and had direct access to
31 colleges, universities and technical schools. Dr. Victor Rios, a nationally
renowned motivational speaker for Latino youth, delivered this year’s dynamic
keynote address.

Immigration Legal Services
In FY15, the Immigration Services Department significantly increased provision of legal services for
unaccompanied immigrant children in response to the influx of youths fleeing violence, abuse and other
adverse conditions in their home countries.
Success Story: MIGUEL
Our Immigration Services Department provides
low-cost legal services to help eligible lowincome immigrants adapt, integrate and thrive
as contributing members of their communities.
Services include legal consultations and legal
representation for immigration issues including
citizenship, naturalization, removal defense,
deferred action, asylum and other matters. The
Immigration Services Department also provides
a targeted menu of services free-of-charge for
immigrant victims of domestic violence.
In FY15, the Immigration
Services Department
handled 1,410 unique cases
982 applications were files this
year for work permits, family
petitions, DACA and more

At the age of 15, Miguel fled his home country of Guatemala seeking
refuge from the country’s deadly MS-13 gang and their relentless
harassment and threats on his life. Traveling alone, he was apprehended
and placed in removal proceedings. Miguel turned to the LAA for help
and was connected with our attorney, Jessica Daman.
After two years in court, Ms. Daman was able to have removal
proceedings against him terminated. A groundbreaking unanimous
ruling in appellate court in this case set a binding precedent that now
requires all juvenile judges to consider the special findings needed
for a child to apply for Special Immigrant Juvenile Status – a huge
win not only for Miguel and the LAA, but for all minors in removal
proceedings across the state. Miguel recently obtained Special
Immigrant Juvenile Status and his lawful permanent residency.
Now fluent in English, he has graduated from high school and is
set to begin college in the fall of 2015.

Latinas’ Economic
Empowerment Program
In FY15, we received a generous grant from The Coca-Cola Foundation to launch a new program to
empower low-income Latinas to achieve economic success. This is accomplished through education,
vocational skills training, entrepreneurship and advocacy with a menu of services including life skills
classes, industry-specific job training, business education courses and financial education. In its first
year, the program served nearly 300 women.
Looking forward, FY16 will see the launch of a new micro-lending fund to help women in the program
start or grow their own small businesses. We will also host the 1st Annual Latina Empowerment
Conference on February 27, 2016 on the campus of The Westminster Schools.
48 hard-to-employ individuals completed 4 industry-specific job training courses prepared for
workforce entry as Certified Nursing Assistants, commercial truck drivers, forklift operators and
childcare assistants

Note: Variance in revenue from FY14 to FY15 is due to the nonprofit
accounting of a large, multi year grant received in full in FY14 to be
expended in FY15 and FY16. Accounting for this, the LAA finished
both FY14 and FY15 with an operating surplus before depreciation.
