Points of Interest:
•The Claim House, the first house west of the
Mississippi, was built in 1832 and moved to
its current location at 1329 College Avenue.
•The entire Sac and Fox Nation gathered here
for the last time in 1836 to sign a treaty relinquishing their lands forever. Chief Black Hawk
and his warriors camped on the upper Lindsay
Park river overlook, and during the four days
which followed, were captured on canvas by
famed Western artist George Catlin.
Welcome!
to the Village of East Davenport – a quaint
historic shopping district located on the banks
of the Mississippi River.
The Village is the perfect place to spend the day
with your family and friends. Experience the
true essence of “Main Street America” where
local shop owners greet you with a warm smile,
offer impeccable service, and love getting to
know their customers. Spend the day strolling
down the streets and browsing the unique
stores. Recharge your batteries with a bite to
eat or a refreshment in one of the wonderful
eateries or watering holes, then shop some more!
Leave the hustle and bustle of the malls behind
you! In the Village, you’ll find the time to
smell the flowers in the parks, breathe in
the fresh air of outdoor shopping,
and enjoy friendly conversation.
See you soon!
The Village of East Davenport,
added to the National Register of Historic Places
in 1980, is a sixty square block district, first
established in 1851 as a logging town. The first
saw mill was owned and operated by Robert
Christie who built a mansion (
) on the hill
above the Village so he could have a view of the
river and his operations without having to always
be down in the heart of the action. Saw mills soon
lined the river’s edge from Bridge Avenue to the
eddy at the foot of Mound Street. Logs from the
northern forests were rafted to the sawmills of the
Village and carried as far west as Denver on the
newly built railroad. Until 1904, lumbering was
the basis for the Village’s economy, but depleted
forests and a disastrous riverfront fire in the
lumber mills that lined the river’s edge ended
the era of logging in the Village.
•River Drive was known as Front Street and did
not go east from Mound Street because of the
river. Originally, 11th Street was known as Main
Street and then became Eddy Street. Walnut
Avenue became 12th Street and Summit Avenue,
the highest point in the Village, became 13th
Street. Jersey Ridge Road was aptly named
because it was the route the Jersey cows were
led down to drink at the river’s edge.
Early 20th century view of E. 11th St. storefront
•The oldest house on its original site is also the
only log frame house. Built in 1848 of 12" and
15" bark covered logs on a limestone foundation,
this earliest of split levels was built directly over
a spring at 1919 11th Street and therefore had
running water.
•The log trestle railroad bridge added in the early
1900's is a tangible remnant of the first railway
built west of the Mississippi. The first bridge to
span the river here was struck by the steamboat
Effie Afton. The bridge burned and was soon
repaired. The steamboat company sued the
railroad which was successfully defended by a
young Illinois lawyer, Abraham Lincoln.
• The upper portion of Lindsay Park was used
as a parade ground for training Union soldiers
stationed at Camp McClellan. Union soldiers
and Indian prisoners were very much a part of
the Village in the 1860’s. After the Civil War,
the heavily wooded hills of the camp became
McClellan Park before being developed as one
of the city’s treasured residential districts in the
late 1800’s and early 1900’s.
