From the Head of school
I
t is with great pleasure that I once again write the forward to our annual Yearbook.
Sadly, after five years at RISS, ten years in Vietnam and forty six years in the
teaching profession, it is time for me to retire. Dr. Bruce Robinson, my successor as
Head of School has been working with me over this last term to ensure a smooth
transition and I am confident that I leave a school that I love in very good hands.

Looking back over five years in general and the last year in particular, I’m pleased to
note that RISS continues to be a dynamic organistaion, with a great future ahead.
Having been involved in the development of the school since before the foundation
was even laid means that I have a deep attachment to the school and it is with
mixed feelings that I leave the school and Vietnam.
As always, this Yearbook provides you with a pictorial overview of various events
held during the year and I know that I will periodically look back at this and other
Yearbooks with fond memories of the time that I spent as part of the RISS community.
I’m sure that you will do the same.
I’m not the only one leaving and as is the norm in international schools, we also say
goodbye to a few members of staff and to some of our pupils and their families. We
wish you all the very best wherever you go.
My personal thanks to all of you who have contributed to making my time at RISS
such a rewarding and successful experience and I hope that this yearbook will remind
you of many of the memorable events we have shared.

One of term three’s themes is ‘People Who Help Us’
Nursery J enjoyed learning about firefighters and
the tools they are using to carry on their job. They
learned that being a firefighter is not an easy job, it is
dangerous but fun. They learned how exciting to be
a firefighter and how cool it is to be in the firehouse
with other firefighters. They role played firefighters
putting out fire in the playground. They really
enjoyed it and it was an awesome and engaging
activity. Some of the children are inspired to be a
firefighter when they grow up. The children love all
the activities we’ve done. Great job NJ!

Book Week 2012 kicked off on Monday, 5th March and was once again a wonderful success. Children
had the opportunity to bring books from home and to swap them with other books at the
Book Exchange in the Library.
On Wednesday, 7th March, Fahasa brought thousands of books to sell in the Activity Room.
We loved looking for old favourites and finding books by new authors.

Preparing for an experiment

was my
first at
RISS and it
will go down
as a truly
great
one.
As a teacher
I couldn’t have asked for a better
group of talented students to work
with. They were focused, enthusiastic
and committed to doing the best
they could. Indeed, there was not
a challenge put forth that was not
met nor exceeded. 6R particularly
enjoyed our IPC studies this year. The
program allowed us to touch on such
a wide range of learning targets for
each unit, which really helped when
working with such a diverse group of
students. For some the Arts related

assignments, whether it was painting,
drawing, photography or writing were
the most enjoyable part of the course.
Others preferred the Science related
work and the experiments such as our
fun balloon car races or challenging
bridge building competition. Still
others enjoyed the group discussions,
debates and research that were part
of the Social Studies component
of IPC. And through it all we got
to play various games and role
playing activities which made it all so
interesting and fun!! However, beyond
this what it really came down to was
the exceptional quality of students in
our class. 6R, you made it a wonderful
year and for that I thank you all!!

Developing the ability and
skill to think in different
ways is important.

Year Four have studied the different verbs of animal movement and are practising them. We watched different animals
move, then tried to guess which verbs go with which animals. After we worked out which animals and verbs go together,
we made a list of the kinds of animals that make each different movement. Then we added to it an animal that can’t have
that verb of movement. Chan Sol said “A spider can creep, but an elephant can’t”. Jang Mi knows
that an eagle can glide but a crab can’t.
Please have your passports, visas and tickets
ready please! Years Five and Six spent some time
at the airport, learning all the correct vocabulary,
procedures, do’s and don’ts of travelling by air.
We looked at the ground plan of Inchon airport
in Seoul, and now they know what to do from
departures all the way through to arrivals. We role
played lots of different activities, from checking
in to security- there are plenty of rules to learn
about safe air travel, but they all got their visas
on time, collected their e-tickets and flew off to
lots of different places. They also learned what
happens when you have too much baggage!

HOUSE SPORTING EVENTS
Throughout 2011-2012 there
have been several Primary
School House Sporting
events that have taken
place for all students to get
involved and participate in.
H
OUSE FOOTBALL: The year
began with our annual house
football tournament, which took
place during term 1. As always it was
a very successful event with our Mile
Post 2 (year 3 and 4) students kicking
off the tournament in the morning
ensuring they set the standard high
for Mile Post 1 and 3 to follow. There
were several very excited students,
teachers and parents as there were
over 20 goals scored across both the
boys and girls games.
Next up in the football pitch was our
Mile Post 3 (year 5 and 6) students,
it turned out to be a very different
tournament in comparison to our Mile
Post 2 students as it took 7 games to
get a point on the score sheet, with a
total of only 4 points scored across the
entire tournament. It was looking like
it was going to be impossible to get
passed the exceptional goal keepers
on the day, but it was MacArthur Girls
when playing against Hung Girls that
managed to score the first point of
the tournament.
Our final tournament was for our
Mile Post 1 (Year 1+2) students which
took place in the afternoon up in
the gymnasium. It was another high
scoring tournament which added
to the excitement displayed by
the students, teachers and several
parents that came along to support
and watch their children participate.
The willingness to participate from
our year 1 and 2 students improved
from last year with everyone playing
to the best of their ability.
At the conclusion of all three
tournaments the scores were then
calculated to find out which house
was the overall House Football
tournament winner, to receive the
House Football trophy in assembly.
It was very close between all four
houses this year but it was HUNG that
took it out with a total of 60 points,
second was Curie with 56, third was
Pasteur with 54 and in fourth place
was MacArthur with a total of 48.

SWIMMING GALA: During the
last week of Term 1 our annual
Mile Post 2 and 3 Swimming Gala
took place. Like last year it was a
very successful morning with all
students participating in at least
one swimming race, trying their best
to get points for their school house
team.
The Swimming Gala consisted
of individual swimming races,
performing strokes such as breast
stroke, front crawl back stroke and
butterfly as well as several team
relays that consisted of a noodle
relay, arm band relay and tire relay.
Once the competition had concluded
all the points that individuals and
teams had acquired were added up
to find out who were the Mile Post 2
and 3 Swimming Gala Champions for
2011/12. Just like the House Football
tournament it was HUNG that came
out on top with a total of 311, second
was again CURIE with a total of 302,
third was MacArthur with 238 points
and in fourth place was PASTEUR
with 236 points.
SPORTS DAY: Thong Nhat Stadium
was again the location of our Mile
Post 2 and 3 Sports Day – all students
were transported there in the
morning on our RISS school buses

of four events
throughout
the course of

morning.
The
activities
consisted of Long Jump, High Jump,
Sprinting and Shot Put.
Like all of our House Competitions,
everyone got into the spirit of
the event by wearing their house
t-shirts and cheering/supporting
for students from their same house
during the different events. Several
of our students are very athletic and
were placed in more than one event
– Woo Jin Sun from year 5 was placed
1st in Sprinting, 1st in Long Jump
and 3rd in High Jump; Myung Jin Roh
from year 4 was placed 1st in Shot
Put, 1st in Sprinting and 1st in Long
Jump and Dong Woo Kim from year
3 was placed 1st in Sprinting and 1st
in Shot Put.
Like all house events, the points that
individuals had gained from placing
1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th were calculated
to see which house were the Sports
Day Champions for 2011/2012. In
first place was CURIE with 193 points;
second was MACARTHUR, with 179
points, third was PASTEUR with 162
points and in fourth place was HUNG
with 150 points.

I
n Physical Education this year, all Mile Post 1
students have participated in several units, where
they have been given opportunities to develop their
physical ability as well as experience new games and
activities.
In the photos you can see during the gymnastics unit
that all students were very capable of performing a
variety of balances individually, and worked well to
support one another when needed.
Throughout term 2 and 3 all Mile
Post 1 students were given the
opportunity to practise and improve
their swimming technique. All
students have made great progress
and are becoming very confident
and competent when in the water.

learnt how to insert pictures, sounds
and hyperlinks, make backgrounds
and do animations!
In our ICT Assembly, we played ‘Who
wants to be a millionaire?’ We applied
all the things we learnt in PowerPoint
in doing this game. We inserted music,
photos, and videos as well.
ICT Primary children improved their
keyboarding skills thru BBC Typing and
10 fast fingers. We had 3 competitions
for the whole academic year. Most
children did very well in Term 3.

different types of charts such as Pie,
Bar and Columns.

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SECONDARY

This school year was our fifth year of operation and
over the last five years, our Secondary School has been
steadily growing. This year we saw our numbers swell to
almost full capacity in Yrs 7, 8, 9 & 10; in fact, Yr10 was
over capacity at the beginning of the school year and we
had to employ more teachers to cover the extra classes.
Next school year, we’re predicting that we’ll enroll the
largest IGCSE and IB classes to date, with approx 55
students in the IB and 90 students in the IGCSE. Our
school has established itself in Saigon as one of the best
providers of the IGCSE and IB programmes and in fact,
our IB average of 33.2 is the highest in Saigon
F
rom the moment our students step into Yr7 at
RISS, we’re preparing them for a demanding
journey through Secondary that takes them from
experiencing a ‘buffet of subjects’ in KS3, on to
their IGCSE and in to the IB. It’s important that
when students choose their subject options for
IGCSE and IB, that the subjects provide a vertical
pathway into the university course they’ve chosen.
This year, we witnessed an increase in student and

different reasons why we liked
being in 7LP. What we all had in
common was we liked 7LP
because our teacher is very
kind and generous
toward us.
T
hrough the year we have had many fun
and exciting highlights. But one that
stands out is our end of term 2 pizza party.
We actually had to earn the money for our
party. Mr. Lenny made us start off with a
budget of 1 million VND. But every time we
spoke any language other thane English in
one off his classes, he would take away 100
000 dong from our budget. But every time we
did something that really impressed Mr. Lenny he would add 100 000
back. In the end of term 2 we had an awesome pizza party thanks to
Mr. Lenny. The Pizza’s were delicious, but were gone in 10 minutes.
We also did an assembly where we had to

making this assembly a really good one we had lots of fun and
the audience was laughing a lot, which shows that they also really
enjoyed it.
As part of 7LP form time, we do show and tell every week. Mr.
Lenny would pick someone randomly then we would have to bring
something important to us into class and talk about the object we
brought.

Hung House did put amazing amount of effort and

F
or me as the Hung’s captain, this year is especially
exiting year because Hung won 2 major house
events with gaining the sense of achievement. Our
true efforts and enthusiasm never betray us. We
won athletic by the overwhelming result comparing
to other houses. Also we won the recycling
competition which values to show us how ethical
and environmentally friendly the hung members are.
I indescribably thank to the all hung members and
teachers who always put uncountable effort to make
the best house. I wish for Hung house’s bright future
and no doubt to step forward to achieve even greater
achievement.

t has been a fruitful year for activities at RISS. Throughout the year the
role of activities coordinator was shared and as such we managed to
keep the program fresh and exciting for the students. The introduction
of new activities at the beginning of every term gave students a chance
to branch out of their normal routines and out of their comfort zone to try
something new.
It’s at this point in the year when we can look back and reflect upon our
achievements. The student’s enthusiasm and participation is a testament
to the success of the Activities program.
There was a range of activities across the school, however a few in
particular stood out.
Perhaps the most popular activities of the year were the many action and
sport oriented clubs (basketball, dodge ball, football, table tennis), with
students proactively taking part to prove their skills against their class
peers and students of different years.
Term 3 also saw the introduction of the Hip Hop Dance Club, and it has
been a huge success. You will have a chance to see the students from the
club giving a performance at this year’s RISS Fun Day.
The Model United Nations has been a steadfast display of the student
body’s commitment to achieving IDEALS.
I would like to give special mention to the new Dodge Ball and Jewellery
clubs also, as the teachers and students worked exceptionally well to see
these two activities take off.
In 2013 we will see students receiving their Expressive Arts award and
Duke of Edinburgh award, prestigious certificates to add to their portfolio
of achievements.
The Swimming club has been successful in furthering our students’ skills
in the water, a necessity for enjoying an aquatic life. And finally the Art
and Craft club has continued to provide a wonderful service to the District
Four school students; it warmed the heart to see our students working so
compassionately.
The Activities program is a great way for the students to develop a passion
for learning new skills, and as such we work hard to keep our program
challenging and new for the students.
There will be changes to the Activities program in the next academic year.
Through the introduction of new clubs and a change to the enrollment
process we will be providing more opportunities for the students to
genuinely appreciate and achieve the IDEALS of Round Square.
I would like to recognise the achievements of all clubs, and say thank you
to all staff who have been involved. Your dedication and enthusiasm have
provided an invaluable experience for the students.

The First Year Of Our Secondary
Journey by 7TS
Through this page, you will find out about our
first year in middle school. What we enjoyed,
what we thought was interesting and challenges
that we faced and overcame.
Pen Pals
Throughout the academic year, we had the chance to
indulge ourselves in many useful activities. One of them
stood out by giving us the chance to socialize with people
from whole other lifestyles, half way across the globe from
us, from Britain in the school of Priory, Shrewsbury. We
had the opportunity to be pen pals with students, just like
us from Britain. Throughout this program, we have leant
many things about their English lifestyles etc. we thought,
as a form, that this activity was very useful.

thought that the best one was International Day. On
International Day, each class represented a country,
and all the students got into different groups. We all
‘travelled’ into different classrooms to learn more
about different nationalities’ such as things like culture,
history and society. We also got to taste a variety of
foods which was very interesting. We also wore national
clothes such as: Ao Dai, Han Bok, etc.
In the first term we had a swimming gala and it was really
interesting because we all got to know who is good at

Our Assembly
One of the major events of this year to us was our form assembly. Our
assembly was about World Hello Day. Each of us got assigned a specific
country, our task was then to find out how to say hello in that country’s
main language. We were also given the task to find appropriate clothes for
each country. It was pretty nerve-wrecking for us to stand on stage and
perform to the whole secondary school. When we got our cue, everybody
nervously walked on stage. As the performance went on, we eventually
gained the confidence and closed the assembly with our final performance
‘Don’t Stop Believing- Journey’. I think we would agree that the man of
the show was Bill with his grass skirt portraying Hawaiians and his crowd
capturing act of the ‘wiggle-wiggle’.

Year 7 Go Back in Time
Just a few things Year 7 have been teaching Year 1
this year.
D
uring this year, we have
been taking a journey back
in time to Year 1. We had the
amazing chance of teaching our old
selves, thanks to Ms. Laura and Ms.
Kara. While teaching the Year 1s, we
have learnt a lot that we would never
have learnt if we didn’t go through
this experience. We taught them a
variety of mini-subjects throughout
the academic year. We put in a lot of
effort to ensure that the quality of the
lessons were very good as the Year 1s
needed a quite strong base of English
to prepare for the foreseeable future
at primary school.
Every week we had loads of ideas
about how the lesson could be for
the Year 1s. It should not be too long,
nor too complex, nor too formal. The
lessons required high quality from
the Year 7s to make sure that the
learning time of the Year 1s wouldn’t
be ruined. After all, we were being
their teachers once a week! After
thinking and asking advice from the
teachers, we decided that the first
lesson would be teaching them how
to use more advanced adjectives in
certain situations. Gradually, the Year
1s’ vocabularies were strong enough
for them to start describing people,
things and settings. We then divided
into groups to prepare the props
such as pictures or diagrams for the
Year 1s to describe. They were asked
to use the simple adjectives that they
have learnt from the previous lessons
to describe anything that they have
been given.
After a few lessons, we evaluated
that the Year 1s were struggling a lot
with their imaginations. They needed
to be prompted in imagining any
scenes or ideas in their minds. Slowly
the amounts of words that they could
use without prompting developed
rapidly. Consequently we thought
that we could develop these ideas
and see how much they had learnt by
making a drama scene from an extract
of the book that the year 1s had been
reading. To get the Year 1s into their
characters, they were asked plenty
of questions about the characters
personality and actions. With the help
from the Year 7s, the Year 1s became
more confident about how to use
some more particular adjectives to
describe the mood of a character. All
of us really enjoyed it when we saw
how much the Year 1s had progressed
throughout that activity.
As this had worked so well we
didn’t want to stop there. We were
getting more and more determined
to improve the year ones creativity.
After all of this drama and role play
we confidently believed that the
year 1s could now be capable of
writing simple stories using their
new vocabulary and improved
imaginations. They were much better
this time at describing characters and
settings.
For the next terms objective with
the year 1s, since in year 7 we were
adapting stories to play scripts, we
decided to see if we could use what
we were doing to help them. We had
to use what we had been learning
and simplify it for the year 1s so they
could also do it. We converted their
own stories into play scripts for them
and then had to become directors of
mini plays, giving them all characters
and lines to learn. We had to teach
them how to empathise with their
characters, something we do a lot
in Year 7. Eventually, near the end of
the year, we had them act out their
adapted play scripts and they learnt
all their lines in a mere 30 minutes. We
were astounded by their progression
and effort. Both the Year 7s and 1s
gained lots of confidence.

Evaluation
Ms. Laura and the Year 7’s decided to
do this activity because we thought
that it would be an interesting
experience for us to see ourselves in
our younger ages and learn how to
teach. We travelled back in time and
transferred into the roles of temporary
teachers. We were teachers who
had the great opportunity to teach
ourselves in the area of teaching. We
wanted to see how we learned back
then when we were year 1’s ourselves.
We thought we would be good at it as
we know how we like to learn but it
was much harder than we thought.
We also wanted to experience how
the teachers felt when they were
teaching, therefore we would be
more respectful and thoughtful with
our teachers. We learnt that teaching
was not an easy job. It required
strength, compassion and patience
to be a good teacher and some of
us found it nearly impossible to be
one. We worked at school and also
for homework. We always needed
new ideas for the lesson because we
realized that repeating the same ideas
wasn’t the best way to help the Year 1s
as they got bored VERY easily. Overall,
we definitely learnt a whole lot and so
did the year 1s. They learnt how to use
more descriptive words accurately.
They were more confident in talking
and explaining their ideas to us. They
were better at understanding us, or
maybe we were better at explaining
to them. As for us, we found that we
became more patient and accepting
with a different type of people that
maybe we have never encountered in
our life before. If we hadn’t done this,
we may have just learned in our own
year groups with our normal peers
but because we have done it we have
now changed our way of learning
by teaching year 1s. We opened our
eyes to the real world and realized
that the things in life don’t always go
the way we want. We realized things
go wrong in reality. Teaching Year
1s was a tough challenge for Year
7s in this year. This challenge tested
our patience, understanding and
creativity the most.

Now that this project is over, we have
looked back and said that the most
exciting activity was when we acted
out the fairy tales with the year 1s.
We thought that was very interesting
since this was the first time they ever
acted out something. We took in a
lot of considerations and planned
everything out very carefully. In the
end we thought that the fairy tales
were a very successful first attempt at
acting out a story.
Overall, we think that we have gained
lots of various experiences over the
last year which everybody should go
through including the year 7’s next
year. It was useful for us and it would
be for them whether they choose to
be a teacher or not. So many of us are
so much more confident now- even
the Year 7’s who were very quiet at
the beginning are now confident to
teach the Year 1’s in front of the class.
I think that the new Year 7’s would
really enjoy the experience next year.
In the end, we thought that it was
an awesome experience and that
everybody deserves to go through.

This year students at RISS have been
encouraged to look deeper and become more
involved in their History studies. Students in
History have learned in many different ways:
group work, research, presentations, videos,
trips, studying sources and artefacts from
the past; in order to enrich their learning
experience.
The IGCSE and IB have been hard at work all
year in order to get the highest grades possible.
They have also visited the War Remnants
Museum during their studies of the American
War, to use the local environment to give deeper
meaning and understanding.
As a result of these developments, popularity
and numbers have increased for History at
IGCSE and IB for 2012-13. We are also expecting
very good grades for the students who have
been examined this year, including a predicted
100% A*-C grades at IGCSE.
Students in each year group have been looking
at the following topics:
Year 7 – Ancient Civilisations: Romans, Egyptians
and Incans
Year 8 – Slavery through time, Black peoples of
the Americas, Civil rights, Empires
Year 9 – World War 1, Hitler and the Nazis, the
Holocaust
IGCSE – Results of World War 1, Causes of WW2,
The Cold War, Germany 1918-45
IB – Causes, Practices and effects of War, The Cold
War, Arab-Israeli conflict.
We also held the first RISS history day last month,
to celebrate all that is interesting and exciting
about History. Several teachers did talks to
students about their passion for History and
what area from History inspires them. We had:
Ms Lily (Martin Luther King), Mr David D.
(Winston Churchill), Mr David O. (Post-colonial
movements), Mr Chris (Napoleonic Wars) and Mr
Gavin (King Arthur).
Students produced work to show their passion
and enjoyment for History which led to
information for a tutor group competition testing
their knowledge. Congratulations to 10EO for
winning this competition!
All in all in has been a fun and exciting year in
History, and I shall look forward to the same
again and teaching all the amazing students at
RISS in 2012-13.

Throughout this whole academic year, Pasteur’s
iron-willed and unbending spirit has always been
held tightly together. It is always impressive seeing
the united spirit made by our Pasteur members.
Pasteur has lots of strong master sportsmen and
women, and that’s also the reason why we had
our amazing wins in the house swimming
gala and football and badminton
competitions.
Despite the fact that we have never gone to the top
of the weekly house points grand total, we are
always the loudest, the most passionate and
enthusiastic supporters that you can find in the
crowd, during every competitions.
Union is strength, union is power. We believe that
as long as we always keep our invincible vitality, the
house trophy will always come back to us!

RISS STAFF FOOTBALL TEAM END
OF SEASON 2011-12 REPORT
T
he season 2011-12 has been the most
successful for the RISS staff football team
in the school’s history. The staff body
have gathered together weekly all year to train
and play matches against other international
schools; in order to develop staff relations and
camaraderie. Elite athletes have been drawn
from across the globe, from places as far afield
as Wales, Western Samoa, Libya and Liverpool.
The RISS staff has competed this season
against their colleagues in BIS, SSIS, ISHCMC
and ABC. We are proud to report that we have
gone the whole season undefeated, and have
won all but one of our encounters. Last week
we had our biggest win, defeating ISHCMC
5-0.
Highlights of the season include:
- A hard fought battle with ABC where Mr.
Lenny put his body on the line
- Conquering the might of BIS 3-1, away from
home
- Mr. Tome learning to kick a ball (and then
becoming top scorer)
- Mr. Chris C. impacting game after game from
the bench as a battle hardened English lion
- Mr. Chris B’s superior athletic prowess and
fitness regime
- And Mr. Andi’s inspirational team talks and
tactical insight into the beautiful game.
It has been a wonderful and enjoyable season
for the staff and we look forward to many more
friendly encounters in the season 2012-13.

The International Award
T
he International Award is an award that
is recognized all around the World. It is
evidence that you have the discipline
and the open mindedness to complete
tasks involved in this course. There are four
elements that must be achieved in order to
qualify for the award. Physical, Service, Skill
and an Outdoor Adventure, students must
complete tasks in each of these categories
to gain the award.
This year was the first year that RISS has run the
award. A group of five year 11 students took part
in The International Award they were; Jung Hung,
Ah Young, Mi Ran, Byung Min and Jeong Eon. The
students learned how to play tennis, bake, play
basketball, coach football and volunteered to
help Mr. Chris with the Primary Choir.

Heart Dissection Biology IB Practical
On 3rd of May, students of Year12MR
have successfully carried out pig
heart dissection experiment during
their IB Biology class.
The class was divided into groups of four students,
and they were requested to annotate structure of
the heart as well as blood flow of oxygenated and
deoxygenated blood in the heart. Dissecting and
labeling the real heart might have been unfamiliar to
them, however everyone collaborated with his/her
group members to accomplish its aim.

The students have already learnt about the circulatory system
of the human body. The human heart consists of two pumps
lying side by side: right and left. It has four chambers (right
atrium and ventricle, left atrium and ventricle), associated
blood vessels and valves. The route of blood in heart is very
significant because the two halves, left and right, of the heart
are responsible for different direction of blood flow, which is
known as a double circulation, to avoid mixing of blood. The
right side pumps oxygenated blood while deoxygenated
blood flows the left side.
It was quite difficult and complicated to find
different parts of the heart exactly as the students
have never seen the real heart before. Some of
them were struggling to decide correct label for
blood vessels as they had to know which side
is connected to the blood vessels (for example,
vena cava to right atrium and pulmonary veins
to left atrium). However, they used their prior
knowledge from previous class and other sources
to do their jobs.
Although the practical involved some complicated
process, it effectively helped the students to memorize
the structure and function of the heart. Learning through
direct and actual experience always remains in their
head. By touching and seeing the real heart, the students
became more familiar with the human circulatory system.
The task linked with the IB syllabus points in Topic 6.2 ‘The
Transport System’. It also added 60 minutes to our ‘lab
hours’ record, which needs to be 40 in total over the 2 year
course (for SL).

usiness Studies is a popular subject
in the school. It runs all the way
from Year 7 to Year 13 and is
considered to be one of the humanities
or social sciences. At RISS students study
everything from considering their role as
informed consumers (Year 7) to running
their own business (Year 8) to introductory
economics (Year 9). Business is even more
challenging at IGCSE and then IB level. It
requires a broad range of skills, from the
imagination required in marketing to the
people skills required in Human Resource
Management, to the Mathematics skills
required in Financing to the logic skills of
Operations.

RISS has always had a good business program and over half of last year’s IB
graduating class went onto study business related degrees at Universities
around the world. For many of them they found their first year of business
at university very similar to what the school covers at IB level and this made
their transition to tertiary education much easier.

Nations @ RISS
The Model United Nations is
one of the most popular school
activities where students focus
on different international issues,
and develop their research and
speaking skills. The MUN students
have been working hard to solve
world issues on behalf of their own
countries. They view the world in
different perspectives, and suggest
pragmatic, tangible and practical
solutions to the problem, as if
they are in the real United Nations
conferences. The most successful
of the RISS MUN delegates then
took another step forward and
participated in inter-school MUN
conferences. This year several
delegates attended four keys MUN’s.

Internal MUN December
There was an Internal MUN in
December 2011, led by the former
leaders of MUN (much appreciation
to them for all their hard work
leading this in 2010_2011). It
became stepping stone for the
establishment of the MUN club in
2012 and for it to flourish.
UNISMUN
The annual UNISMUN was held in
the United Nations International
School in Hanoi in February 2012.
This was our second time of sending
a group of our MUN students to
an external (and very real) MUN
conference. Of the 16 delegates
from RISS, two were delegates in
the Security Council for the first
time in our school. For most of

Good day, Phu My Hung. One peaceful day, IBs
are buried under a deep pool of books. What’s
the top news recently? The Graduation and Bye
Bye to IB. And now, it comes to an end!
Congratulations to the Class of 2012. We are
about to depart on another risky, mysterious,
and scary adventure. It is time for us to escape
our cages of school and parents. Now is the time
to go crazy. Parties and… You know what we are
talking about *wink wink*
Looking back on what the IB elites have gone
through, the hell of submission dates, exams
and university applications, we thought we
couldn’t survive. But we did, thanks to the
support from our teachers, especially Mrs.
Annie Thomson, the one who has multiple
responsibilities in our school; IB Coordinator,
University Counsellor, Head of Secondary,
English teacher, ToK teacher, and Form teacher.
Our journey was not always filled with happy,
pleasant things, we had so many obstacles to
overcome. We also had to communicate with
each other to solve particular problems. Not all
problems are able to be solved, but they were
worth the experiences. Experiential learning
is an important part of IB. We have started to
develop an instinct in leadership and that gut
feeling of how and where we are heading in our
lives.
To pick the worst one ever: (can’t pick only one,
I have over 100), the most recent events were
the Final IB exams and CAS presentation which
we presented during assembly. For the finals,
it was nice that we had study leave to have
extra time to study at home and to get enough
sleep. Sleep, Praise the Lord. Still, our school
was prepared to ensure that we felt comfortable
during the finals. In fact, many of us felt the
Finals to be similar to our Mock Exams. Comfort
is important! Still, it was not easy. You better
look forward to your IB life: mountains of books,
full hard drive, assignments, exams, teachers
chasing us and never ending deadlines.
Do you know why our topic is “time for a diet”?
It’s because of all the things that we mentioned
above. We didn’t have time to exercise, or
let’s say, no time to even leave the desk. You
can see that many of our IB students have
increased their weight significantly. How are
we supposed to attend graduation dinner and
prom with swelled sizes? Or can we even fit in
the dresses that we like? It is time for us to diet
and exercise. Besides that, we have to go around

Time for A Diet
Saigon to visit places that we did not have
the opportunity to visit during our school
experience. Most of us will be leaving Saigon
for our various universities in a few weeks.
We will all return from time to time to RISS
to visit all the students and teachers. We will
miss our school life and will start to know
how precious our time was. It is time for us to
embark on the second part of lives. We will
study, get degrees, get jobs, get married, settle
down somewhere and miss our childhoods.
We are no longer under the protection of our
parents and it is time for us to go our own way.
We are unsure of when we will be seeing each
other again, but we will meet at least once in
our remaining lives and we will welcome that
time. We will laugh and get embarrassed at all
the stupid things we did.
Are you getting bored? We will shut up now
and stop talking. We know you love us.

he Academic Year 2011-2012 is now coming to an end as is my time here at RISS.
I will be handing over the Design Technology Department to a new specialist
teacher and he will be taking this subject area and Department forward. It has been
my pleasure to teach here at RISS for the past 3 years and I will leave both RISS and
Vietnam with memories which I will have for many years to come. The present Year
10 and 12 cohorts are in a good position to enter the final year of their respective
courses. Design Technology as a subject area at IGCSE and IB levels is becoming
more popular and I am confident this will only continue.

This year in
GEOGRAPHY
G
lobally geography has never been more on
everybody’s agenda. This year we have filled
the curriculum with additional cases linked to
current global economic affairs. The most pressing
issues are climate change and response; peak oil
predictions; Japanese nuclear disaster fallout;
resource scarcity and the impact of the credit crisis in
the west upon global development.
Fortunately we have also found lighter moments and
enjoyed field trips studying rivers in Thailand and at
Gian Diem falls, Urban studies have taken place in
and around Ho Chi Minh city.
In Theory of Knowledge all students have explored
our geographical paradigms and looked for where
we find our scientific evidence in Geography. How
can we know the Earth is not hollow? Where has our
comprehensive understanding of our planet came
from and yet, how much more still remains to be
known? Can the earth as a biome respond in time to
anthropogenic greenhouse warming? Students at
RISS are evaluating events, recognizing the rate of
changes locally and internationally and developing
creativity skills in the solutions they suggest.

Music Department
This year has been a very productive
time for the Music Department. We
started by putting on a fully staged
version of the highly acclaimed and
successful Musical of the “Lion King”.
There were many people involved in
this including many of our talented
students. Hoang Le Minh took the
lead role of Simba. Adrianna and Aina
took the parts of Young and Mature
Nala respectively. David did a fantastic
job as “Mufasa”. Tom and C.J. made us
all laugh with their portrayal of Timon
and Pumba and Won Hyuk as Rafiki
captured everyone’s imagination.
Sung deservers a special mention as
his take on the despicable character
Scar, it was one of the highlights of
the whole performance. Of course a
Musical or any show couldn’t happen
without the supporting characters,
all of whom contributed to the whole
experience. A group of year 7 and
8 girls played the vile Hyenas who
combined with several older students
as Lions helped with the backing
singing, dancing and overall effect of
the show.
No Musical would be complete
without its Musical Ensemble who
did a very professional job during
all of the performances. I would like
to single out Kang Young Jee (our
Pianist) who held the whole show
together with her fantastic playing.
She also helped direct some of the
ensemble rehearsals ensuring that
we would be able to play to a high
standard
Many members of our staff and
students were involved in various
roles off the stage from helping
rehearse to building sets. They
included Mme Danielle, Ms Amy,
Ms Sarah, Ms Sunhwa, Mr Lenny, Mr
Geoff, Mr Tuan, Ms Thanh and Ms
Hanh. In fact there were very few staff
that weren’t involved. All of whom
gave their expertise freely so the
School could put on a fantastic show.
Next year we are planning on
undertaking a different type of
production, a Variety Show. These
compilation performances have
many different short acts performing

Summer Concert
At the time of writing
we are currently
preparing for our
Secondary Summer
Concert. This will
be held in the RISS
Theatre on June 15th at 7.00pm. We
will be featuring a wide variety of
Music on the programme and there is
sure to be something that everyone
will enjoy. We will be featuring Music
by composers such as Bach, Grieg,
Respighi and Morricone as well as
some Popular Music by John Lennon
and Paul McCartney. We will also
feature Music composed by Students
and Teachers here at Renaissance
International School Saigon. There
will be several soloists, the RISS
Choir, the RISS Orchestra and again
a guest appearance by the Choir
from the charity KOTO (Know One
Teach One http://www.koto.com.
au/). It is certain to have been a very
entertaining evening.IB Music
This year also saw our first students
in year 13 take their International
Baccalaureate Music Exams. The
IB Music program is an intensive
course of study that requires a great
deal from the students. They have
to complete 3 original compositions
of their own Music, perform and
record a solo performance recital of
20 mins to a high
standard, undertake
a Musical Links
Investigation into
Music from different
Cultures as well
as sit a three hour
Exam. The students
undertaking
this
course
have
submitted
coursework which
is amongst the
best I have seen,
especially in their
composition

investigation work.

Key Stage 5 : We have successfully completed
half of their IB Korean Literature course. Throughout
this academic year, we have studied several World
Literatures including “Outsider” of Albert Camus,
“Crime and Punishment” of F.Dostoevsky and “Don
Quixote” of Miguel de Cervantes.
Key Stage 4: We learned basic
skill for writing argumentative essay,
descriptions and short stories. Also,
we learned making a well-grounded
argument to persuade other people.
We had been writing lots of short
stories in given topics, themes and
background. We improved writing
skills through all tasks we did this

We have found and discussed about
different aspects of each literatures
through interactive debate. Each of
us had to take turn in organizing and
leading the debate.
We also have studied different
factors of literature, such as language
and plot, which play important
role in delivering and determining
the core message of the work of
literature.
I believe studying World Literature
have provided us both practical and
intangible advantages. We are now
able to appreciate and recognize use
of different components of novels,
and their effect. Moreover, it has
brought us something more valuable
than just analyzing those factors. It
has broadened our understanding
of the different human conditions.
While reading the great works
of literature, we were able to
experience different perspectives
of narrators and characters toward
certain issue or society. It has
exposed us to a wider range of
human experience and enriched our

his year the ICT
department saw the
introduction of the new IB course—
Information
Technology in a Global
Society. This was a new course offered for
the first time at RISS to our current Year 12
students. During this course students have
looked at the problems that ICT has caused for
companies and individuals. Not an easy task
when you have spent the last 2 years studying
IGCSE ICT with Ms Lily who has constantly
been harking on about how good ICT is and
why everyone should be studying it.
ICT
This year we have also seen the number of students,
who wish to study IGCSE ICT. grow, which is great
news for the
department, and is certainly
keeping the teacher on her toes with all the extra
work. The students have taken this course like a duck
to water, and I’m sure that we should expect to see
some great results next year from this class. It’s great
to see the students so
enthusiastic about a subject—and they are not even
playing computer games.
At Key Stage 3 students are learning all the
practical skills that they need to help them
with producing work in other subjects. We
learn skills in:

The great Curie house has had
a very impressive year. The
Curie clan has shown off some
great talents. Curie’s year
started off in the pool for the
junior swimming competition.
There we saw some very
impressive swimming from all
who took part and some great
wins were achieved in the
name of the curie house.
The Curie Students had yet
another chance to show
off their sporting talents
during the house football
competition. Under Mr.
Tome’s guidance the boys
came very close to winning
but unfortunately they were
stopped in the final after a
penalty shoot out. Mr. Tome
swore that Curie would get
their revenge and has began
planning for next years
competition. All of the curie
students took part in this
year’s sports day. Curie had
some excellent wins and the

team spirit was alive and well.
However this was not to be
Curie’s day as the Horrible
Hung house false started and
bribe their way to the top of
the podium !!!
Both the house badminton
and house dodge ball were
more highlights in the Curie
calendar. All of the Curie
teams played in both the
house events the onlookers
screamed and cheered their
team mates during some nail
biting matches.
Last but not least, It has been
a very close race throughout
the year with horrible hung
and Classy Curie battling
it out for the overall house
points championship, but as
everyone knows, Curie is the
best house ever and will never
be beaten!!

Book Week
at RISS
B
efore one can look into the
competitions and the events
that were held, one must
truly understand what the spirit of
Book Week really is about. During
Book Week students were strongly
encouraged to appreciate a book of
any kind in a better light. We were
strongly encouraged to indulge
ourselves into the books whether it
is into the surrealistic reality of the
world that defies the fundamental
laws of physics of a fantasy book or
into a continuum of information,
exciting and surprising facts of a
non-fiction book. As we are moving
into a new century and technology
is taking over and books seem to
unfortunately become irrelevant,
during this period of time, many
have learned that there is a world
just as magical and enticing away
from the digital devices of video
gaming and social networks.
There were multiple competitions
that were held on book week as
well, which was on March 5th-9th
this year. There was a read-a-thon
in which students had to read as
much as they could during the
week and the reader with the
highest grand total would win.
For those who have a touch of

creativity with their fingers pens,
they took up the challenge to write
the best short stories or poem
that they could imagine within
the theme of ‘A Place I would like
to return to’, ‘’The House on the
Hill’ or ‘A surprise Visitor’. Much
deliberation from the teachers
was needed to decide a deserving
winner as there were many entries.
The final element of Book Week
was for those who preferred their
creativity not be written down on
paper, but instead by designing a
costume of their favourite story
book character. Even though I’m
a student I can say that the
teachers had a hard time to pick
the ugliest stepmothers and
the weirdest Cinderella’s and
decide which one would win as
there were so many excellent
costumes. Even the teachers
joined in!

Comments from the poet:
Sometimes an overload of work
can steam-roll you flat and squeeze
every ounce of energy out. As an
IGCSE student I can certainly feel
at times that my homework just
multiplies like a terrible cold virus
in your body. Multiple assignments
and essays done simultaneously
can really put a strain on you. At
times it seems as if there is no
escape from the stress that mounts
from the whole idea of always
giving in your best work.
However; sleep in the opinion
of many is getaway that helps
you relax the most and not use

holiday destination. As we fall into
the world of dreams we experience
things that we cannot explain,
whether it is that angelic glow from
the sky below or the darkness of the
dancing around you. Whatever the
case, dreams are truly fascinating

Thomas and I had to be together
for three weeks since I agreed to
help him. I did not remember how
I accepted that but anyway I think
that was a good idea. We went
through so many things together;
we had great times but for some
reason, I always thought how
weird it was when I stayed really
friendly with the person who had
always bullied me over the last
three years.
We went from station to station
under the hot and cold temperature
conditions. Sometimes there was
constant rain which caused even
more trouble. Finally, we arrived
at the very mysterious place
where our revolution began. We
went through the back door, up
to the ceiling to observe carefully
the conversation between the
two black interested, suspected
men. After an hour waiting full of
passion, we did not manage to
collect much information until the
very last minute. The conversation
had just mentioned my father’s
name and Thomas’ parents. I felt
an electric shock float through me
and up to my nerves. What was I
thinking? The scene showed that
those two men inside the room
were my uncles. I wanted to jump
into the room immediately but
Thomas held me back. He kept
me tightly to him and covered
my mouth to hear the rest of the
conversation.
“Well then brother, how can you

get the money from those two
poor people?”
“I don’t expect to have their
family’s money. I am going to sell
them to the Chinese men. We had
a contract. I will be a billionaire
after this.”
The conversation continued for a
while but I started to feel faint. We
changed our plan. He was going
to find his parents on his own and
I would talk to the police men. We
would separate the group because
we did not have much time left. I
agreed.
The next morning as I packed my
stuff; I found a small picture of
Thomas Vincent’s family. It was
taken a few years ago with his
parents. By looking at the picture,
I could imagine how hard his life
was, being separated from his
parents. I thought about it for a
while and decided to help him as
much as I could.
I went to the policemen early in the
morning. There, I received some
of my father stuff back and asked
for the help. I showed them the
video of the two men I had earlier.
Everything went smoothly as I
predicted it would. The policemen
set up the organization for the
criminal hunt right after. I called
Thomas and told him not to worry.
For the first time ever, he said thank
you to me in a deep meaningful
voice and I was too happy to
appreciate it. The case was sorted
out. Thomas found his parents
and was once again able to live
with them. He decided to take a
medicine university course and so
I did. We became friends and well
that was the end of my fairy tale.
I have a slogan for myself now: To
live life like a dream.

eight years apart separated by
about 121 years and 105 years

ohannes Kepler was the first
astronomer to predict a Venus
transit - that of 6th December
1631. Kepler correctly predicted that
an ascending node transit of Venus
would occur in December 1631, but
no-one observed it - due to the fact
that it occurred after sunset for most
of Europe. Kepler himself died in 1630
Using Kepler’s tables, Jeremiah
Horrocks realised that a transit would
occur on November 24th 1639 and
observed it for the first time from
Much Hoole in Lancashire.
He
alerted his friend William Crabtree
who observed it from Manchester
and it is believed that these were the
only people to witness it.
Using geometry, astronomers knew
they could use the transit of Venus to
determine how far the Earth was from
the sun, producing the Astronomical
Unit. We now know this distance is
93 million miles but, a century ago,
countries mounted expensive and
sometimes dangerous expeditions to

Perhaps the most famous expedition
was that of Captain Cook to Tahiti in
1769. Following the observations,
Cook opened sealed orders that told
him to search for the, then unknown,
southern continent, Terra Australis
Incognita. As a result, he claimed
New Zealand for the Brirish Crown
and the land he called New South
Wales.
On June the 6th 2012 the staff and
students of RISS were lucky enough
to view the last transit of Venus for
another 105 years.

The bright and sunny day began at
06:15 for Mr. Eoin, Wenli (10EO), Mike
(12MR) and Vickey (12MR). All of the
early morning astronomers were able
to see the small dot passing slowly
through the suns bright surface.
This rare sight continued to please
up until 07:00 at which point clouds
blocked the unique view.
Unfortunately, due to the heavy cloud
cover it was decided to postpone the
main event for the majority of the
students. Only a small number of
students from primary (6A, 6R and
6N) were invited down to the physics
lab for a lecture and a demonstration
of the history and the science behind
the transit of Venus.
But then, luckily for the students,
there was a break in the cloud. All of
the students rushed out with solar
glasses in hand and were once again
able to see Venus float across the
surface of the sun.
This unique view was visible on and
off for the rest of the morning, up until
the transit finished at approximately
11:15. During this time students from
year 10 and 12 were able to see the
transit along with a number of the
teachers.
Even though the day started as a
disappointment it ended as a great
success with at least 100 people being
able to see an event that won’t happen
again in the lifetime of anyone alive
today.
