WORLD CLASS ENTERTAINMENT
IN AN UNBEATABLE SETTING
WELCOME TO THE THEATRE ROYAL
We begin with exciting news for Theatre Royal
attenders. Our plan is to join sister venue the King’s in
making enhancements to audience comfort and our first
priority is to install auditorium air conditioning. To help
with this, an extra £1 will be added to each ticket sold for
new shows from this brochure onwards, with the intention
of meeting the expectations of a 21st century audience.
I am delighted to announce the Theatre Royal is one
of only four British tour dates for Arthur Miller’s A View
From the Bridge. Starring Scotland’s own Ken Stott and
Hollywood star Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, this
electrifying production is currently storming the
West End and we are thrilled to be the theatre
bringing this production to Scotland.

Scotland’s award-winning national dance company brings two
fiery and passionate pieces to the stage this spring.
A brand new Carmen, created with Scottish Ballet by one of the
most inspiring and influential figures in British dance, Richard
Alston, retells the famous story of a hot-blooded gypsy whose wild
spirit lures a young officer into an obsessive love when she spurns
him for the glamour of a handsome toreador with tragic results.
Performed by the Scottish Ballet Orchestra, Rodion Shchedrin’s
Carmen Suite, skilfully highlights the glories of Bizet’s original score.
Continuing with the evening’s themes of control through
sexuality and fear of loss, comes Cheating, Lying, Stealing. Made
for The Royal Ballet in 1998 by Ashley Page, this virtuoso piece
features a sofa engulfed in flames and a distinctive soundtrack
played live, on stage, by electro-acoustic ensemble Icebreaker.
Come and witness the strength, passion and grace of
Scottish Ballet’s dancers.

COSÌ FAN TUTTE
Sung in Italian with English supertitles
A production first presented by Opéra National du Rhin
From the director of 2008’s acclaimed La traviata comes a
fresh take on one of Mozart’s most famous operas. Often
presented as a lighthearted comedy of errors, David McVicar’s
Così fan tutte gets to the heart of the story in an honest
and insightful production.
Set in the Bay of Naples in the 18th century, the production
captures the beauty of the Mediterranean in its scenery, and
the elegance of Jane Austen in its stunning costumes.
By turns dramatic, wry, comic, and heart-rending, the opera
follows 24 hours in the lives of two sisters whose fiancés decide
to test their fidelity before they marry. A deeply human tale,
full of tangled love, jealousy and desire, Così fan tutte
asks universal questions about trust and fidelity – questions
that resonate as much today as they did 200 years ago.
MANON
Sung in French with English supertitles
A Scottish Opera première
A passionate and compelling account of a promising life that
spirals out of control, Manon is a warning to those who are
faced with too much opportunity in life, and who take
too much, too soon.
This spectacular period opera is one of the largest ever staged
by Scottish Opera, with an impressive chorus of 46 and professional
dancers performing the beautifully choreographed ballet scenes.
Full of drama and vitality, the stylish production is the ideal
partner to Massenet’s romantic and emotional score.
Director Renaud Doucet and designer André Barbe have
received high praise for their visionary collaborations
throughout Europe and North America and make their
UK debut with this new production. Scottish Opera Music
Director Francesco Corti conducts.

Don’t miss Ken Stott, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio and
Hayley Atwell in a five star evening of spine-chilling drama.
Lindsay Posner’s outstanding revival of Arthur Miller’s brilliant
and majestic play arrives in Glasgow for just seven performances
following a stunning season in London’s West End where it
transported, electrified and shattered audiences with
mesmerising performances from the superb cast.
Dockworker Eddie Carbone has made a good life for himself and
his wife and niece in 1950’s Brooklyn. From an immigrant family
himself, Eddie is happy to house and protect his wife’s Italian
cousins who arrive illegally in pursuit of the ‘American Dream’.
What Eddie doesn’t know is that this act of kindness will have a
shattering effect on his whole life, and the lives of those he loves.
Arthur Miller is arguably America’s finest playwright, whose other
landmark works include The Crucible and Death Of A Salesman.

Following a record breaking world premiere at the Edinburgh
International Festival in 2008 (and winning the prestigious ‘Herald
Angel Award’ for Excellence), Matthew Bourne’s acclaimed adaptation
of Oscar Wilde's cautionary fable The Picture of Dorian Gray now
comes to Glasgow.
Set in the image obsessed world of contemporary art and politics,
this ‘black fairytale’ tells the story of an exceptionally alluring young
man who makes a pact with the devil. Amongst London’s beautiful
people, Dorian Gray is the ‘It Boy’ – an icon of beauty and truth in
an increasingly ugly world. The destructive power of beauty, the
blind pursuit of pleasure and the darkness and corruption that lie
beneath the charming facade; the themes behind Wilde’s famous
tale have never been more timely.
Matthew Bourne is co-director and choreographer of West End
smash-hits Oliver! and Mary Poppins. New Adventures’
recent dance hits include Play Without Words, The Car Man,
Edward Scissorhands and Swan Lake.

Gilbert and Sullivan at their very best!
Elegantly recreating the original period
settings and costumes with exquisite detail,
this acclaimed production sparkles with wit.
Sullivan’s ever popular and memorable score
contains some of his most beautiful writing as
Gilbert, in his most topsy-turvy of all plots,
leads us through the swashbuckling world of
young Frederic, the pirate apprentice, who
was born on February 29 in a leap year and
therefore won’t ‘come of age’ until he is 84!
