Club News Letter May 2015 Organization: President John Butler Vice- President Ron Perras Secretary Rich Miller Treasurer Ken Nelson Director of Membership Jim Rodrigues Director of Auto Events Steve Poole Director of Social Events Joe Monarca PRESIDENTS MESSAGE: Great clinic by Paul K. Jackson Chev, very valuable information was given, we had 5 members there. We have 3 car shows this year, we have taken on several new sponsors, another one this week I just picked up. As we grow, the need for member involvement also grows, I am hoping to have good turnouts at our club events. We hope to have many club member events so that we can enjoy our cars, fellowship, talk cars and just have fun. WHAT JUST HAPPENED? On Sat April 26th we held our 2015 “spring kick-off brunch” at the Gelston House in East Haddam CT. We had a turnout of 35 people for the luncheon. Fifteen member Corvettes met in Rocky Hill and caravanned to East Haddam via RT 9. No one got lost and it was a great site seeing all the cars. I must add, I believe we gathered quite a bit of attention on the way, as well as when we pulled into the parking lot. We have some beautiful Corvettes in our club. The food was good and the conversations at each table was interesting and entertaining as well. While there was a slight SNAFU with the menu I think it worked out fine and the owner provide free bottles of wine (white and red) at each table. There was a brief presentation to our new sponsor of the club, Gerry Wright as well as an update on the proposed Mohegan Sun show in Oct. After lunch we headed to Salem Valley Farms for handmade ice cream and more Corvette discussions. Some members even lowered the convertible tops for this portion of the cruse. Thank you all for your attendance and I will work to set up another similar cruise in the near future. Ron Parras “BACK OFF” this is my fork and you ain’t getting it. When I began looking I checked out Hemmings one day and spotted this one with a 203 area code phone number. I was still working at the VA in West Haven, and when I checked out the number I found it to be right in North Haven - practically on my way home from work! When I stopped to see it, the seller had two sitting in his driveway; an '89 C4 (red of course), and this ZR-1. Both were sitting side-by-side, nose to his garage door, and the aggressive appearance of the "wide body" of the Z has me hooked immediately! The car had spent it's life in Connecticut, and had about 33K on it when I bought it - it's now at about 70K, and has been to Carlisle numerous times, Bowling Green three times, Virginia, South Carolina, New Hampshire, etc.. My hope is to someday drive it out to Oregon to visit our son and his wife, and try to do that in conjunction with one of the events staged by the N'west ZR-1 group at Portland Int'l Raceway (all of 3 miles from my son's house). While it is mostly stock it does have; K&N air, BB 3" catback exhaust, a Rippie chip, RC injectors, 3:73 gears, Hurst short throw shifter, Grand Sport calipers, and a couple of minor suspension tweaks. All of this rides on an interesting looking set of Vredestein tires (that have performed very well at about half the cost of Michelin or Good Years). On my first trip out to "The (ZR-1) Gathering" in '03. I did make a few passes on the strip at Beech Bend - having not been on the drag strip in approx. 35 years, and with no special set up or changes I managed a best of 13.3/106mph, which I thought to be respectable as it was before all the changes mentioned above. While the paint & body are showing a bit of age, it's still a fun driver and I'm looking forward to getting it out of the barn shortly! Pete K. FOR SALE SECTION MISC. SPECIAL INTEREST: The C4 The first convertible since 1975 was introduced in 1986. All convertibles were designated as Indianapolis pace cars regardless of their color or options, and all included decal packages. The anti-lock brake system became standard in the 1986 Corvette. Horsepower was boosted to 240hp in 1987, and a new suspension system was offered as an option. A 35th anniversary edition was offered in 1988 and available only in coupes. The car featured a white interior and exterior with special accents and emblems. In 1989, a new manual six-speed transmission was offered. Other changes included a new optional fiberglass hardtop for the convertible. WHAT’S NEXT?
