Funded collaboratively by the WFC and sponsoring organizations, it is expected that this Fellowship will be offered annually through the WHO. “It is wonderful that the first fellowship has been awarded to a young Canadian clinician and researcher who is a graduate of CMCC and the Clinical Sciences graduate program,” says Dr. Paula Stern, Director of Graduate Studies for CMCC’s chiropractic clinic at St. Michael’s Hospital. Quesnele and his family will be moving to Geneva in early January to take up an eight month placement, working directly under Dr. Bedirhan Ustun and Dr. Molly Meri Robinson on the ICD-11 revision process. Congratulations to Dr. Quesnele on receiving the recognition for his involvement in this groundbreaking initiative. Reaching out to high school students about bone and joint health by Courtney Brown In late November, at patient Mark McCann's request, Dr. Chris deGraauw and two of his Year IV interns travelled to St. Mary Catholic Secondary School (St. Mary C.S.S.) in Pickering for an informational outreach about bone and joint health. The goal was to emphasize bone and joint health, range of motion, and their impact on daily living. Interns provided strategies on building bone mass and maintaining the health of synovial joints, highlighting how chiropractic can play a role maintaining musculoskeletal health as well as treating injuries. treatment techniques and modalities used, and how they relate to injury treatment and prevention. The interns thank Dr. C. DeGraauw and Dr. J. Kissel, for helping to incorporate key interactive teaching techniques acquired from the new ‘Teacher Education Program’ taught at CMCC. The feedback received from the presentation was extremely positive and helped foster a strong future relationship between St. Mary’s C.S.S. and the CMCC community. The initial presentation was designed for grade 9 students and modified for the Grade 12 Exercise & Science class. Students were challenged to perform movements to identify the importance of range of motion, strength and endurance for everyday activities. They were also educated about chiropractic, the different Flu season has arrived: What you need to know Toronto Public Health is reporting increased flu activity in the Greater Toronto Area. Shovel right. Improper snow shoveling is the leading cause of back pain during the winter months. This winter prevent injury with these simple steps: 1. Warm-up. Before beginning any snow removal , warm up for five to ten minutes to get the joints moving and increase blood circulation. To do this, march on the spot, climb the stairs, or go for a quick walk around the block. Follow this with some gentle stretches for the back (knee to chest), arms and shoulders (body hug), 2. and legs (forward bends from a seated position). This will ensure that your body is ready for action. 2. Don’t let the snow pile up. Removing small amounts of snow on a frequent basis is less strenuous in the long run. 3. Pick the right shovel. Use a light weight, non-stick, push-style shovel. 4. Push, don’t throw. Push the snow to one side and avoid throwing it. If you must throw it avoid twisting and turning - position yourself to throw straight at the snow pile. 5. Bend your knees. Use your knee, leg and arm muscles to do the pushing and lifting while keeping your back straight. 6. Watch the ice. Coarse sand, ice salt, ice melter or even kitty litter can help to give sidewalks and driveways more traction, reducing the chance of a slip or fall. 7. Wear proper footwear. Shoes and boots with solid treads on the soles can help to minimize the risk of slips and falls. 8. Take a break. If you feel tired or short of breath, stop and take a rest. Make it a habit to rest for a moment or two for every 10 or 15 minutes of shoveling. This is especially important if the snow is wet and heavy. Stop shoveling immediately if you feel chest or back pain and seek advice from a health care professional. Backs in Motion profile series: Garret de Jong Year I student Garret de Jong always stayed active while growing up, but he did not run. That active earlier lifestyle however did make for an easier transition when he began his racing career. “I got into this high level of sport after high school,” de Jong says. “In high school I never ran cross country or track. In university I wanted to do something and decided to try to do a triathalon, and from the triathalon I discovered that I was actually a decent runner.” He joined both the track and cross country teams at the MyCMCC Digest - Week of January 7, 2013 University of Ottawa and began training for triathalons, while coaching a triathlon team in Ottawa in the process. He completed his first professional triathlon race this summer, the Muskoka 51-50 race, placing seventh overall. Recruited by student race ambassador Jeremy Law, de Jong brings his coaching and running experience to help those looking to train for the upcoming Backs in Motion event. “I love coaching, especially when it’s something that fits into my lifestyle—I like to run, I like to talk about running, I like to help people run,” he says. “I have knowledge of the sport of running that I’d love to pass on.” The 30th anniversary Backs in Motion 10 Km Run & 5 Km Walk/Run takes place on April 28, 2013.
