MyCMCC Digest - Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College
Week of December 12, 2011 MyCMCC Digest Brought to you by CMCC’s Marketing and Communications Division Chiro Games 2011 This year’s Chiro Games took place in Cocoa Beach, Florida, for the third year in a row. It was not only a beautiful weekend, but a fun and successful one too. CMCC was able to take a total of eight teams, resulting in 57 participants. The athletes worked hard throughout the weekend, and it was evident at the awards ceremony. The hockey and tennis teams placed first overall, sweeping every game/match that they played. The running team brought home a bronze medal and Brittany Moran had an outstanding individual effort in the 5k, placing 2nd overall in the women’s division. The soccer team placed 4th overall after a very tough and competitive semi-final match. Both volleyball teams and the softball team put in a great effort but the competition and Florida winds were fierce. Congratulations to all athletes, and a big thank you to CMCC and Students’ Council for their continued support to make this weekend possible. Contributed by Krista Revenberg From the President’s Desk Marathon of Mo and the Mid Week Mix Up! With another year almost behind us, it is important to take the time to reflect on the good fortune that brings us together — a passion for health care and the desire to improve lives. It is during this season that we often turn our thoughts to those less fortunate. At CMCC, we do our best to share our good fortune with those in the community who may benefit from a helping hand. As an institution, CMCC reaches into the diverse communities we serve by offering support through holiday gift programs at Anishnawbe Health Toronto and South Riverdale Community Health Centre. Our support at this time of the year makes it possible for families in need to enjoy the holidays in the ways many of us take for granted. We respond to a need of patients at Sherbourne Health Centre by supplying vitamins from the CMCC Supply Centre and Bookstore, and in this way, are able to contribute again to the health of our patients at the centre. I applaud the goodwill of everyone who extends themselves for others, particularly during the holidays. If we act together, we can accomplish so much. To everyone at CMCC, I wish you a happy, healthy and safe holiday season and a prosperous New Year. CMCC bad weather closings When snow and icy weather hit the GTA, traffic can be unbearable and travel is often just not safe. To ensure the safety of students, staff, faculty, and patients, CMCC has a Bad Weather Closing Policy. Here are the highlights: If the decision to close CMCC occurs outside of regular hours, it will be done by 5:30 a.m. Here’s how you can find out more: 1. Visit CMCC’s website at www.cmcc.ca for announcements. 2. Call CMCC’s main number (416 482 2340) for a voice recorded status message. 3. (Jeremy at centre) Congratulations to Jeremy Law who ran the amazing Treadmill Marathon of Mo (42.2 km) to celebrate Movember and raise awareness for prostate cancer. The challenge was hosted by the CMCC Movember team leader Alex MacKenzie & Mo Sista-extraordinaire Britanny Filipetti and Law of the Outdoor Activity Club (OAK) and its representatives. Extra help was greatly appreciated from Alex St. Pierre, Stephen Malone, Amy MacKinnon & Chelsea Berry. The marathon -- completed under 4 hours entirely on a treadmill-- took place against a back drop of video games projected on walls, ping pong, dj & music and the CMCC MoVP free throw challenge, coordinated by Zara Ali. Many friends and supporters joined Jeremy on a treadmill and exercise bikes beside him for company and a little workout! Countless others were there to cheer him on while he completed the grueling challenge. Law is an experienced runner who has completed triathlons (swimming, cycling, running), half ironmans (long distance triathlon), marathons and even ultramarathons (more than 42.2 km and up to 100 miles), but he had never run more than 45 minutes on a treadmill before. Interestingly, running a treadmill marathon has been on his list of to-dos! The idea of connecting it to Movember came to him only two weeks ago, but as he was already training for an Ironman, he felt that it was something he could do. He was inspired to raise awareness for MyCMCC Digest - Week of December 12, 2011 Movember in particular, as his own family has been touched with a prostate cancer scare and he sees the value in making it a more socially acceptable topic. Law was thrilled with the support and team spirit that others offered to support the run. “I could not have completed the marathon without the amazing energy and support from countless friends and smiling faces through the day. Words would not be enough to describe how I felt when I saw the finishing chute being formed with an impromptu 'Finish' sign and masking tape line, not to mention the 'Man of Movember' sash and 'winner' medal. One of my proudest moments to date!” Law was back at CMCC early the following day, apparently well recovered from his run and wondering if he’s on the hook for next year. 3 The following article has been reprinted with the permission of the Chatham DAILY NEWS Erdie hits the ice and the books IPE volleyball tournament By Mark Malone If Trevor Erdie gets hurt playing hockey, rest assured he'll get the best care possible. The former Maroons defenceman is still on the ice every week with his classmates at Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in Toronto. "Needless to say, if there are injuries, we can take care of them," said the 23-year-old Chatham native. The team of future doctors won gold medals recently at the Chiro Games in Cocoa Beach, Fla. The CMCC squad went 4-0 against teams from New York, Florida and Iowa. "Leave it to the Canadians to come down and win an American tournament," Erdie said. The Chiro Games bring together chiropractic students to compete in 11 different sports. "It was fun," Erdie said. "It was good to get out and play in a tournament setting again. I hadn't played in a tournament setting since I was 16, my draft year." Erdie was chosen by the Sudbury Wolves in the 12th round of the 2004 Ontario Hockey League draft. He played the 2004-05 and '05-06 seasons with the Maroons before sitting out one season. He resumed his junior hockey career in 2007-08 while attending Queen's University in Kingston. Erdie ended up playing three seasons with the Gananoque Islanders of the Eastern Ontario Junior Hockey League. He graduated from Queen's with bachelor's degrees in physical education and science. Now in his second year of a four-year program at CMCC, Erdie plays on the school's 'A' team in the Adult Safe Hockey League. The league is filled with players who bring OHL and university experience. Some attend CMCC. Erdie enjoys playing not only for the high-level hockey but also for the friendship. "You still keep the camaraderie in the dressing room," he said. "That's the biggest thing." Erdie isn't sure where his education will take him next, but he wants to have his own practice someday. "You kind of go where the market is, and I don't know what the market is yet," he said. The 7th annual Interprofessional Beach Volleyball tournament was held November 20, 2011. The event was organized by the Interprofessional Education (IPE) Council with the help of the Student Canadian Chiropractic Association (SCCA). The tournament brought professional health students from chiropractic, medicine, dentistry, speech-language pathology and naturopathy together, providing an opportunity to learn more about each others' disciplines while engaging in friendly competition. We had an amazing turnout this year with more than 140 players forming 18 teams. The day was filled with many exciting, spike-filled matches against equally skillful teams. In the competitive division finals, a team of Year II chiropractic students won against another team of Year II chiropractic students, in a close, exciting championship game. In the recreational division finals, a team of dentistry students defeated a team of chiropractic students in a tight match. Amidst all the fun and excitement of the day, the tournament raised $1300 for Osteoporosis Canada. Shovel right. Improper snow shoveling is the leading cause of back pain during the winter months. This winter prevent injury, with these simple steps: NationalTheatre of Great Britain production based on a novel by Michael Morpurgo ♦ adapted by Nick Stafford in assocation with Handspring Puppet Company Tuesday, February 21, 2012 The Princess of Wales Theatre 1. Warm-up. Before beginning any snow removal , warm up for five to ten minutes to get the joints moving and increase blood circulation. To do this, march on the spot, climb the stairs, or go for a quick walk around the block. Follow this with some gentle stretches for the back (knee to chest), arms and shoulders (body hug), and legs (forward bends from a seated position). This will ensure that your body is ready for action. (300 King Street West, Toronto) A CMCC fundraising event in support of research into musculoskeletal disorders War Horse fundraising event Working with Mirvish Productions, CMCC has arranged a unique fundraising event, featuring a live performance of the Tony Award-winning play War Horse. 2. Don’t let the snow pile up. Removing small amounts of snow on a frequent basis is less strenuous in the long run. Proceeds from the event will support the McMorland Family Research Chair in Mechanobiology, which was established at CMCC to study musculoskeletal pain, particularly related to the neck and back. 3. Pick the right shovel. Use a light weight, non-stick, push-style shovel. Show Summary 4. Push, don’t throw. Push the snow to one side and avoid throwing it. If you must throw it avoid twisting and turning - position yourself to throw straight at the snow pile. 5. Bend your knees. Use your knees, leg and arm muscles to do the pushing and lifting while keeping your back straight. VIP Pre-show Reception 6:30–7:30 p.m. (with preferred parking up to 6:30 p.m.) Show 7:30–10:00 p.m. Visit www.cmcc.ca/WarHorse or call 416 482 2340 ext. 200 for event information. CMCC VIP Pre-Show Sponsors 6. Watch the ice. Coarse sand, ice salt, ice melter or even kitty litter can help to give sidewalks and driveways more traction, reducing the chance of a slip or fall. 7. Wear proper footwear. Shoes and boots with solid treads on the soles can help to minimize the risk of slips and falls. 8. Take a break. If you feel tired or short of breath, stop and take a rest. Make it a habit to rest for a moment or two for every 10 or 15 minutes of shovelling. This is especially important if the snow is wet and heavy. Stop shovelling immediately if you feel chest or back pain. Seek medical advice or see a chiropractor if you experience back pain. 6 MyCMCC Digest - Week of December 12, 2011 CMCC General Sponsor: Allan M.
