Welcome
CONTENTS
Our rich and varied programme this season includes
the only Scottish date of Alan Bennett’s new play
The Habit of Art. After sell-out success at the National
Theatre in London, this deeply funny and thoughtprovoking play is eagerly anticipated and should
not be missed.
We have always championed Matthew Bourne’s work.
His ability to create stunning productions and bring new
audiences to dance means he plays a crucial role in our
work at the Theatre Royal. This season his iconic modern
day classic Swan Lake returns for a strictly limited run
at the end of September prior to New York. We are also
going to be collaborating with Matthew Bourne’s New
Adventures to present the world premiere of a brand
new production and you will find further details
of this on page 25.
With Simon Callow’s tour-de-force Shakespeare
The Man from Stratford, outstanding productions
from Scottish Opera and Scottish Ballet, there
really is a wonderful choice on offer this season.
We look forward to welcoming you.

Join Hyacinth Bucket (pronounced ‘bouquet’) and her
dysfunctional family; sisters Rose and Daisy, brother-in-law
Onslow, and neighbours Elizabeth and Emmet in this
hysterical brand-new play by creator Roy Clarke.
Emmet is directing a play for the local amateur dramatic
company and will go to extreme measures to keep Hyacinth out
of it. However Hyacinth is showing her new painting, Willow
By Moonlight, at the Art Exhibition in the same building and when
she hears that the part of Lady Malvern is yet to be cast then
nothing will stop her. However, nothing is ever that simple and a
case of mistaken identity has hilarious consequences.
With Gareth Hale (Hale and Pace) as Onslow, Kim Hartman
(‘Allo, ‘Allo) as Elizabeth, Steven Pinder (Brookside, Doctors)
as Emmet, Debbie Arnold (Eastenders) as Rose
plus the brilliant Rachel Bell (Darling Buds Of
May, Grange Hill, Dear John) as Hyacinth and
featuring David Janson (‘Allo, ‘Allo, Keeping

promises to be one of the comedy
highlights of the season.

3 DISTINCTIVE PIECES: 3 GROUNDBREAKING
CHOREOGRAPHERS: 36 PHENOMENAL DANCERS
Scottish Ballet presents a fascinating programme of pure dance
influenced by the grace of geometry, contemporary classical music
and chic 1940s style, featuring three pieces which have never
before been performed in Glasgow.
Scènes de Ballet by revered choreographer Frederick Ashton
combines intricate pointe work, couture-inspired tutus and
Stravinsky’s gorgeous score with a hint of Broadway glamour.
The evening’s centrepiece is a world premiere by San Francisco
Ballet choreographer Val Caniparoli. Set to two chamber scores
by Uzbekistani composer Elena Kats Chernin, this new work
showcases Caniparoli’s distinctive dramatic choreographic style.
The Olivier Award-winning Fearful Symmetries was created
by Ashley Page for the Royal Ballet in 1994. Set to John Adams’
dynamic score, this vibrant piece takes inspiration from New York
abstract expressionist painters, evoking images of bustling
American cities and the wide open spaces of the mid-west.

But we know nothing about him. Or do we? In a magical
tour de force, Simon Callow, one of Britain’s greatest actors,
tracks down the real William Shakespeare, bringing to

with Jonathan Bate, pre-eminent Shakespeare biographer
and editor of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s

Starring Brigit Forsyth & Hannah Waterman
Carrie’s War is the unforgettable story of one ordinary girl and
her brother, packed off to the Welsh mining valleys at the start
of war and living through extraordinary events.
Nina Bawden’s award-winning book has been consistently
voted one of the nation’s best-loved novels. Direct from the
West End, this hugely successful stage adaptation brings to life
Bawden’s heart-warming, funny and evocative tale in a beautifully
staged production.
Carrie’s War features a 13-strong cast starring Brigit Forsyth
(Thelma in Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads? on TV; Arsenic
& Old Lace on stage) and Hannah Waterman (Laura Beale in
EastEnders and winner of Just the Two of Us with Marti Pellow
on TV; Calendar Girls on stage).

A spellbinding new adventure from the creators of
The Gruffalo, adapted from the best-selling book written
by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler.
How the cat purred
and how the witch grinned
As they sat on their broomstick
and flew through the wind
The witch and her cat are flying happily along on their
broomstick when a gust of wind blows the witch’s
hat, bow and wand away into the night.
With the help of a daft dog, a beautiful bird and a
friendly frog, her belongings are retrieved.
But this broomstick’s not meant for five and – CRACK! –
it snaps in two! When a hungry dragon appears, who will save the
poor witch? And will there ever be room on the broom for everyone?
So fasten your seatbelts for a rip-roaring ride on a truly magnificent
broom. A magical, musical delight for children aged 3+.

After sell-out success in London, Alan Bennett’s latest
smash-hit play comes to Glasgow.
Oxford 1972. Benjamin Britten, sailing uncomfortably close
to the wind with his new opera, Death in Venice, seeks advice
from his former collaborator and friend, W H Auden. During this
imagined meeting, their first for 25 years, they are observed and
interrupted by, amongst others, their future biographer and a
young man from the local bus station.
Deeply funny and thought-provoking, this new play reflects on
growing old, on creativity and inspiration, and on persisting
when all passion’s spent: ultimately, on the habit of art.
