Sex Offenders Fighting Halloween Ban Convicted pedophiles are suing over a law that restricts their activities on Halloween. The new law prohibits registered sex offenders in Simi Valley from displaying Halloween decorations, answering the door to trick-or-treaters or having outside lighting after dark on Oct. 31, 2012. Sex offenders listed on the Megan’s Law website are also required to post a sign on the front door in letters at least on inch tall that reads “No candy or treats” at this residence.” Attorney’s representing five registered sex offenders say in the lawsuit that both requirements violate free speech rights. The suit will be asking a federal judge to issue an injunction to stop the city from enforcing the new law. On Sept. 12, the woman was walking near South 24th and East San Antonio Street when a Hispanic man in his 40s approached her and asked for directions to a business, police said. Then the second suspect, a Hispanic man in his 20s who was standing nearby joined the conversation, police said. Soon after, the older man allegedly grabbed the woman by the shoulders and pushed her towards a dark gray minivan parked nearby, police said. On the other line, police said, the woman heard a female voice saying that the man needed collateral and a person who was a United States citizen to cash in his ticket. The woman believed the ruse and gave the suspected a large amount of money, before being dropped off and left in the area of South King Road and Virginia Avenue, according to police. The second suspect is in his 20s, about five feet five inches tall with brown wavy hair. • FUGITIVE WATCH 1-800-9CAUGHT Well, this summer we’ve reached a new milestone in the Saso family. After a few years of being empty nesters we now have a full house again. Our sons moved back home, first one then the other. Then in June, after our youngest graduated from UC Santa Barbara, she returned. Times are changing. It is much harder for young adult kids to make it on their own. At least this is true in Silicon Valley. Our boys tried. But the cost of rent and living expenses made it hard. They tell us they are moving home to save for the future and want to get out ASAP. To help them out with this goal we are charging rent. It is like a forced savings. They don’t know this, of course, so please don’t tell our secret. They are upset with our decision. Real parents would never do this! Well, I’m for real. And life isn’t fair! Rent is due on the 1st. It is very different with adult kids at home than teenagers, yet some things remain the same. Complaints about their expectations of us and their sleep schedules haven’t changed. My boys are nocturnal, like night owls, but I no longer feel obligated to get them on a normal sleep cycle nor to get them up on time. And as long as I don’t hear them in the wee hours I’m okay. So far so good. We had to adjust to household chores. It took some time to work out this new community living arrangement. At first the kids thought since they were paying rent they shouldn’t have to help out. Why do chores when you are already taking our money! Then move to Motel 6. They’ll even leave the light on for you. I have to say, our middle son is becoming quite the gardener. He definitely inherited the Saso genes. Our gardens are beautiful thanks to Paul. We may be the second generation of Sasos to get garden photos in Sunset Magazine! There have been some positive unexpected changes. I could never have planned this, but there is healing happening between parents and children. We have had real conversations about past hurts. It is hard and painful to hear about my parenting crimes from my son. But the dialogue has gone both ways and what has been birthed is a whole new healthy relationship. Respectful and considerate. I enjoy having my kids around now. When they were all in high school I hated being a parent. I wanted them all to go off to college far-far away. I was even willing to pay! But times are different now. I have grown. I have been more honest with myself about how I placed my agenda on my kids, even when they didn’t want me to. It has become clear as a Colorado blue sky my part in all our conflict. I was blinded by that a few years back. I do have one serious complaint, though. Why can’t three young adult children in their early twenties, EVER get a new role of toilet paper back on the holder? Enjoy the rest of your summer. NOTE: SKETCH IS OF THE VICTIM FUGITIVE WATCH 1-800-9CAUGHT fugitive watch® news oct - 12 fw Movie Critics Corner: Moon by Steven Ferdin, Jr. Duncan Jones made his 2009 directorial debut with his high concept science fiction film Moon. It is almost as minimalistic as a movie can be, with a budget of about $5 million, with a cast of about eight people in total, and a shooting schedule of only thirty-three days. Moon puts all of its few resources to good use, creating a movie almost on par in terms of quality with its several obvious sci-fi inspirations, most obviously Kubrick’s 2001. Duncan also borrows several other themes from some of the other greatest science fiction works, such as the concept of synthetic humans earlier explored onscreen in Ridley Scotts Blade Runner, the intrigue of company conspiracy and some of the visual cues found in the Alien series, just to name a couple. Set on a desolate moon station, Sam Bell (played by Sam Rockwell) and his only companion, the artificial intelligent GERTY, (voiced by Kevin Spacey) oversee the mining and shipment of the chemical compound helium-3 used for supplying most of Earth’s energy needs. Just as his three year contract is about to conclude, Sam suffers from a hallucination, crashes his rover, and loses consciousness. Eventually Sam awakens in the infirmary with no memory of the accident and explores the surface of the moon, discovering the wrecked rover and discovers another Sam Bell inside. The two begin to speculate with each other on their origins and thus the plot thickens. Moon is an easy recommendation for anyone who admires the science fiction genre. It may borrow heavily from 17 . the sci-fi movies of the past that practically defined the genre, mostly those of the 70s to early 80s, but it never drifts into cheap knock off territory. It explores some of the same concepts but in its own subtle perception. It is also a visually impressive looking film, with a preference for use of models over computer animation, something I find more convincing in appearance. Overall, Moon is a success in every example of filmmaking from directing, writing, acting, and visuals. But what I appreciate most about Moon is that the people involved in production sincerely cared about the quality of their work and it shows palpably. 12-282 Angel Padilla Attempted Murder asalto Phoenix police are currently seeking Angel Padilla after he allegedly kidnapped the mother of his child in front of their child and then shot at a police officer with an assault rifle when the officer tried to stop him as he was driving away. When they did a background check, police found she had 17 traffic convictions, including seven speeding tickets and two citations for driving without a license. The police called and invited her in for an interview. When she arrived, she was arrested and charged with failing to appear in court and driving without a license. One way not to open a safe. Police said two would-be robbers were arrested early Sunday morning in the parking lot of a Swiss Chalet restaurant in Ajax, Ontario (just east of Toronto), after spending more than half-an-hour trying oct - 12 fw to open a safe they had stolen from the restaurant by driving back and forth over it with a car. The two men, and a third still being sought, police said, forced two cleaners leaving the Swiss Chalet back into the restaurant at gunpoint, then bound them with duct tape, robbed them, and kicked one cleaner in the head. Then they dragged out the restaurant safe, loaded it into the trunk of one of the cleaners’ cars and headed out. That’s when they hit the speed bump in the restaurant parking lot. Out tumbled the safe. What to do? They decided the safe would open if they drove over it with the car. They did. If didn’t. The frustrated rob- bers tried again. And again. And again. Damage to the car was extensive but the safe was barely harmed. A half-hour later, one of the cleaners finally freed himself and called 911. When the police showed up, the men were still busy in the parking lot with the reluctant safe. Police dogs ran down two suspects aged 18 and 19, who face a variety of charges. Police are still looking for a 21-year-old male suspect. Four Times This woman filed for bankruptcy. Unfortunately, she just happened to “accidentally forget” about the $200,000 piece of real estate that she sold to her father for $1.00 the day before filing her Chapter 21 . 7 bankruptcy petition. When she got to the courthouse, she found herself being ripped apart by the federal trustee for bankruptcy fraud. So, believing that she just needed to “explain herself” to the judge, she decided to take the stand in her own defense. The line of questioning went as follows: Q: “Do you know that bankruptcy fraud is a felony?” A: “Yes I do.” Q: “Have you ever previously been convicted a felony?” A: “Yes I have.” Q: “How many times have you been convicted of a felony?” A: “I have been convicted three times.” She then stopped and pondered for about two seconds before continuing: “And this will be four!” fugitive watch® news fw oct - 12 22 . fugitive watch® news oct - 12 fw 23 .
