Rich in culture and history, Ontario will equally please the history buff and the casual observer of landmarks. Ontario’s history begins with the Oregon Trail and continues to blaze in today’s hectic climate. Beginning in the mid-19th century, travelers passed through Ontario as they made the treacherous journey from the east looking for a better life. Many sought the mild climate of the region along with the desire to own land. In the 1840s, married settlers were able to obtain free land for their families. Additionally, Oregon was spared many of the diseases common in the east during this time. As such, Oregon was a dream come true for many travelers, and those who made the journey successfully were part of the future success of Ontario as well. In 1883, the Oregon Short Line Railroad completed tracks through the Ontario area. A depot and inn were developed which led to increased settlement in the area. Ontario began as a cattle town, and the railroad was a central component of this industry. This is true even today, as the area is home to a variety of agricultural-based businesses. Situated at the northeastern tip of Malheur County, Ontario is the largest city within the county and shows no signs of slowing its growth. Throughout the 20th century, various improvements such as man-made reservoirs have positively affected the growth of business and industry in the area. Additionally, Ontario is home to people with a rich variety of ethnic backgrounds. True to the spirit of the first Oregon Trail pioneers, residents who call Ontario home are a part of both the past and the future. Ontario is located in eastern Oregon near the Idaho-Oregon border. The largest city in Malheur County, Ontario continues to grow in large part because of its easily accessible location. Ontario is conveniently located at the center of four major highways: Interstate 84, U.S. Highway 95, U.S. Highway 20-26, and U.S. Highway 201. Follow Interstate 84 to the southeast for about an hour and discover Boise, ID. To the northwest, a drive of approximately six hours along Interstate 84 will take travelers to Portland, OR. The highways provide access to Nevada and California to the south, Idaho to the east, Washington to the north, and Oregon’s coast to the west. Ontario Municipal Airport provides a 5,000-foot runway to accommodate light general aviation aircraft to business jet aircraft. A fixed base operator is on the field with aircraft fuel, and there is also an aircraft maintenance business. Boise Air Terminal/Gowen Field Airport, a major commercial airport, is a quick hour’s drive to the southeast. Greyhound provides local bus services. Additionally, the area is served by the Union Pacific Railroad, which passes right through town with a stop in nearby Nyssa. Rich, fertile land is the foundation of all that lies within Malheur County. The agricultural industry continues to be the economic base for the area. Cattle are the main livestock, and crops include onions, potatoes, beets and a variety of grains. A mild climate and rich soil provide the means for prosperous farms and ranches. Throughout the countryside, fields of flowers dot the landscape, leaving many observers in awe of the natural beauty. These same fields provide a multitude of seeds for gardeners. MAJOR AGRICULTURAL INDUSTRIES: Beef Cattle Beef is the number one agricultural product in Malheur County. Cattle ranches can be found throughout the area with many able to trace their beginnings back to the 1800s. Onions Onions are the second-ranking agricultural product in the county. Migrant workers are largely responsible for the weeding and harvesting of more than 5 percent of the national onion market right in Malheur County. Every August and September, observers can witness the annual ritual of onion curing by driving county roads. Potatoes Found in practically every restaurant and kitchen, potatoes are the cornerstone for many meals and recipes. In Malheur County, large russet potatoes are the third-largest cash crop. In addition to the top three industries already mentioned, many other products are grown and produced within the county lines. Other agricultural products include, but are not limited to, alfalfa hay and seeds, carrots, milk, peppermint oil, sugar beets, wheat and grains. The Union Pacific Railroad and various trucking companies help transport these products out of Malheur County. The city of Ontario operates under a Mayor-Council form of government. The City Council consists of the Mayor, Council President and five Councilors. The Mayor is elected at-large and works in conjunction with the city Manager and the City Recorder to run the city and serve the people of Ontario. The city’s government is committed to serving its residents and businesses. City Council meetings are generally held the first and third Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at City Hall. For more information, visit www.ontariooregon.org. The Ontario Fire and Rescue Department consists of 41-members dedicated to protecting the citizens of Ontario and residents of surrounding areas. The department has nine full-time firefighters, 25 volunteer firefighters and a part-time secretary. In addition to responding to local fires, the department provides Hazardous Material Emergency Response, Quick Response/EMT services, building permits, inspection of residential burn barrels and checks on the fire safety of new construction in the area. The Ontario Police Department provides public safety police and dispatch services 24-hours a day. Other services include fingerprinting, permits and licenses, crime prevention, animal control and weed/garbage abatement. The police department has 33 employees, which include administration, patrol, detectives, ordinance control and dispatch. Further information about the police department can also be found on the city’s website at www. ontariooregon.org. The Four Rivers Cultural Center and Museum is at the center of Ontario’s cultural offerings. Celebrating the convergence of the area’s four rivers (Snake, Malheur, Owhyee, and Payette) and the people who settled the area, the center offers a variety of programs and events throughout the year. Visit the museum to learn about the history of the Japanese Americans, Basques, Hispanics, Northern Paiute, and Europeans who settled the area throughout the past 100 years. A recently added collection, In Spirit I Walk with Him, showcases Indian artifacts from North and South America. This collection is a true celebration of Indian culture and traditions. The Japanese Garden is a memorial to the Japanese Americans interned in the area during WWII, as well as those who fought in the war for America. The garden will be a sanctuary of peace and quiet that offers the opportunity to reflect on the past, contemplate the future and enjoy the moment. The Meyer-McLean Performing Arts Theater seats 645 patrons and houses productions ranging from musicals to symphonies. The Cultural Center also houses an 18,000-square-foot Conference Center that can accommodate up to 700 people. Whatever the occasion, the center is ready to serve.
