MISSION STATEMENT
We are a Catholic Faith Community - wonderfully diverse in age,
experience, culture and background. Ever open to the guidance of

The bandage changer
A rabbi prayed to the great prophet Elijah.
“Where,” the rabbi asked, “shall I find the Messiah?”
“At the gate of the city,” the prophet replied.
“But how shall I recognize him?”
“He sits among the lepers.”
“Among the lepers!” the rabbi cried. “What is he doing there?”
“He changes their bandages,” Elijah replied. “He changes their bandages, one by one.”

That is the true mystery of Christmas: that God became one of us, lived among us and came to birth though our moments of joy,
grief, despair, anger and fear. Here, in the Christ Child, the sacred is not some abstract concept of theological theory: the love of
God takes on a human face, the Word of God becomes “enfleshed” in the child Jesus, enabling us to transform our hearts in that
love and re-create our world in that Word of justice and compassion. Our God knows that our lives are filled with disappointment,
pain and despair; he has lived through the storms and crises we all live through; he has given us hope in our world by promising
us life in his world. The challenge of Christmas is to continue to make that love incarnate in our own lives and in the lives of those
we love.
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
We begin this holy season of Christmas, celebrating The Nativity of Jesus Christ and The Feast of the Holy Family. On
behalf of all of us at St. Patrick Parish we wish you a very Merry Christmas, a holy season of grace and fulfillment of all God’s
promises. God touches our life so that we can touch God’s life.
A heartfelt thank you to all of our Deacons, Sr. Bernadine, our music ministers, ushers, extraordinary ministers of the holy
Eucharist, altar servers and all of you for your devotion and participation in celebrating our Christmas Masses.
This is a season when families and friends come together. But for many families its more than a festive Christmas dinner.
Bringing a family together requires the patience to listen, the selflessness to forgive and the commitment to heal and mend. To be a
family is to seek out and bring back whoever is lost. To look beyond behavior to understand what is prompting us to such anger,
bitterness or disaffection, to put aside our own expectations to respect another’s perspective. The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and
Joseph understood all to well the struggles and challenges of staying together as a family in their time and place. May we give
thanks this Christmas for our families and as we are ready to enter in a New Year take on, out of love and care for those we love,
the hard Christ like work of being family to another. Let us make this a Jubilee Year of Mercy as Pope Francis suggests to us.
I received a letter from Rachel Hrbolich, Associate Director of Social Services of the Diocese of Youngstown, who wrote
us a thank you for collecting the most money ever from all of our parishes for the First Step for Change Campaign (baby bottles).
Our collection amounted to $5,304.50. Thank you for your donation, but more so, for helping families who come to Catholic
Charities, “Changing lives...one family at a time.” Thank you.
A very special thanks to all who decorated the church for Christmas this year and all who bought poinsettia plants in
thanksgiving or in memory of a loved one.
Also, this Christmas we remember in prayer our family, friends and parishioners who died this past year; we have included the poem My First Christmas in Heaven with their names. May God grant them eternal rest and peace.
Please remember that the Holy Day of January 1, 2016, Solemnity of Mary the Mother of God, will be celebrated on New
Years Eve at 4:00p.m. and New Years Day at 10:00a.m.
Again, on behalf of our Parish Staff, we wish you a Merry and Blessed Christmas Season. All that we have been preparing
and waiting for during Advent is here in our midst. As families in today's church; traditional, blended, adopted, foster, single, married, widowed or divorced, the challenge for all of this at Christmas is to continue to make the love and mercy of God incarnate a
part of our own lives and those we love.

The Holy Family
Every parent knows the trials of raising children. There is the wonder of watching someone grow and learn and discover new things.
There is satisfaction as a child takes to heart
the morals and values that a parent seeks to
share. There is sadness, and even grief,
when some difficult problem or illness besets a son or daughter. There may even be
anger or despair if, as a child grows, he or
she rejects what a parent holds dear. Needless to say, family life is complicated, never
perfect, sometimes full of joy, sometimes
crowded with pain.
Today's Gospel gives a hint that the life of
the Holy Family was not always the perfect
example we might imagine. Trials and struggles were a part of their life too. As the Gospel story relates today, Jesus basically
skipped out on Mary and Joseph, not an
unusual practice for an adolescent. But also
not the kind of thing we would typically
associate with a well-behaved teenager. In
other words, the Holy Family is exhibiting
the traits and behaviors that are part of the
dynamic of ordinary family life.
And that is good! It serves as a reminder to
all of us that their example is that of a family not so different from our own. On this
feast the church lifts up the Holy Family for
us to imitate. The prayer for the day asks
God to help us be like them "in practicing
the virtues of family life and in the bonds of
charity." No matter the structure of our family household, we are called to put into practice the eternal love of God, first revealed in
the mystery of the family of the Trinity, and
then lived out concretely in human life in
the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph.
It is the bond of charity that holds any family together, a love that penetrates deep into
our souls and abides in our hearts no matter
the joys or sorrows that life brings.

On this Feast of the Holy Family, our parish will be taking a
special collection for Catholic Charities’ Keep the Lids
Warm campaign. This annual effort raises funds to provide
utility assistance to low-income and working poor families

Masses for Life
Each year in January we recall the infamous Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade that effectively legalized abortion on demand throughout
the United States. About this time our diocese
hosts a Mass for Life as a prayerful reminder
that we “must protect and nurture human life at
every stage of its existence.” This year Bishop
Murry will preside at two Masses for Life:
- Saturday, January 16, at 12:00 Noon at St. Paul
Parish, North Canton (241 S. Main St.), and
- Sunday, January 24, at 4:00 pm at St. Columba
Cathedral, Youngstown (154 W. Wood St.).
After each Mass for Life there will be a reception consisting of a light lunch and an “Expo” of
respect life information. All are welcome – no
