nlike many communities in New Mexico whose
history spans centuries, Rio Rancho’s spans just mere
decades. Beginning with the purchase of a 55,000acre ranch northwest of Albuquerque in the 1960s, AMREP
Southwest laid the foundation for what would become “The
City of Vision,” culminating with a city that incorporated in
1981. By comparison, Santa Fe, the capital of New Mexico,
was founded in 1680.
In 1980, the Intel Corporation chose Rio Rancho to build
one of its main fabrication facilities. Not being constrained
by history, tradition or custom, Rio Rancho welcomed this
high-tech giant, and the huge industrial complex that Intel
built, and continually renovated over the years, produces
and exports its cutting-edge products to this day.
Rio Rancho has always had its focus on the future, as
evidenced by the bold creation in 2006 of a City Center on
what was just desolate mesa in the geographic heart of the
city. Anchored by a modern Rio Rancho City Hall and the
state-of-the-art Santa Ana Star Center, this forward-looking
development has welcomed the likes of Hewlett-Packard,
Central New Mexico Community College, UNM West and the
UNM Sandoval Regional Medical Center.
The seven great lodging options and over 90 local and
national eateries located in Rio Rancho welcome you to

This is our community. This is our cuisine. Since most of us
who live in Rio Rancho come from somewhere else, diners can
find fabulous recipes from across the country and the globe right
here in Rio Rancho.
Rio Rancho cooks up something special for every taste and every
budget. Don’t know the difference between authentic Mexican and
New Mexican cuisine? In Rio Rancho, you will learn how, what,
where and why they differ. How about some pizza that will rival
the pies of Chicago, New York City or Sicily? What about homemade
pasta that will make you think you are in Little Italy? If you are a
burger eater, no worries, Rio Rancho is home to some of the best
green chile cheeseburgers around. Try some Irish flair or indulge in
your favorite Asian cuisine with your choice of Chinese, Japanese,
Thai or Vietnamese.
For the non-local, Mexican and New Mexican food are easily lumped
into one category. With over a half-dozen restaurants between the
two categories, you have a chance to figure out what the (subtle)
differences between the two are, be it at Hot Tamales that will
make you think you are in your Abuela’s cocina or at Cazuela’s
Brewery & Mexican Grill that takes you back to the street food
of Old Mexico…. And then you decide: Is it the green chile? The
cilantro? The flat enchiladas versus the rolled ones?
New York, New York, New York… Many of the early settlers of Rio
Rancho were New Yorkers retiring or transplanting here. While many
years have passed and today Rio Rancho is more than a hotbed
for New Yorkers (with the rumors of it being a “Witness Relocation
Program” community subsided), the impact remains strong in
our local cuisine from pasta and pizza and all kinds of little Italy
delights in between. Joe’s Pasta House will make you feel like you
are in your Nonna’s kitchen and the walls of Aldo’s and Sal-E-Boys
pizzerias are breathing tributes two the Big Apple!
You have not had the true New Mexico experience until you have
tasted a green chile cheeseburger! And no matter what your favorite
sport or favorite team is, there is a some great pub fare up and
down Southern Boulevard to enjoy while you watch at O’Hares, Fat
Squirrel, Turtle Mountain Brewing Company and Slate Street, but it
doesn’t stop there as Rio Rancho is home to Cazuela’s Brewery &
Mexican Grill, New Mexico’s only Mexican micro-brewery, as well as
the cornerstones for American fare, Applebee’s and Chili’s.
Looking for something on the healthy side, vegetarian or vegan?
Try one of the three Vietnamese restaurants in town or East Indian
cuisine at Namaste, one of the highest-rated restaurants in the
whole metro area on dining blogs and websites.

JULY
PORK & BREW –
Whether you love BBQ or just love food, you are truly in for a treat. Experience
the many varieties of BBQ and the “low and slow” cooking process that separates
real BBQ from backyard grilling. Pork & Brew attracts the talents of true BBQ
chefs from all over the country. If BBQ isn’t your thing, come for the other
food vendors, arts and crafts and continuous live entertainment at the threeday event because at Pork & Brew there is more than “meats” the eye with the
unique indoor/outdoor set-up that allows you to enjoy great food and drink in the
summer sun and/or the cool confines of the Santa Ana Star Center. Pork & Brew
is THE original New Mexico food festival.

TASTE OF RIO RANCHO –
This event is exactly what the name says it is. It is a food sampling event featuring
the restaurants, breweries and wineries of Rio Rancho. The main purpose of the
event is to connect or re-connect residents and visitors alike to the great eateries
of Rio Rancho. It is an affordable family-friendly event held in the Santa Ana Star
Center. The event also features other activities and attractions to round out the
evening.

SANTA ANA STAR CENTER –
The 8,000-seat multi-purpose arena hosts over 100 events a year. With a lineup that spans the spectrum of community-oriented, family friendly, comedy,
conventions, trade shows, live concerts, rodeo, youth sports tournaments,
NM Stars football and New Mexico Activities Association state championship
basketball, volleyball and wrestling, the Santa Ana Star Center is home to exciting
activities and entertainment year round.
OCTOBER
ALBUQUERQUE INTERNATIONAL BALLOON FIESTA –
Yeah, yeah, yeah… We know… This event takes place in Albuquerque. But everyone
likes to be part of a winner… This is one of the best events on the globe! With
balloons frequently flying to the north, Rio Rancho serves as a landing spot and
post-flight meal location for many balloonists and chase crews. The eastern edge
of Rio Rancho, on the bluff above Corrales, offers fantastic views of the Rio Grande
valley as balloons take flight and eventually descend. Rio Rancho’s six hotels offer
great access to Balloon Fiesta via NM 528 or the event’s Intel-based park-n-ride.

our wood-fired oven and hand-crafted ales and lagers
