Crowfoot Peewee Spitfires Give Back Our hockey team, the Crowfoot Peewee 2 Spitfires decided to raise money for 2 charities this past season. We chose the kids charities – KidSport Calgary and Children’s Wish Foundation. We raised money by selling 50/50 tickets at a National Women’s vs. Midget AAA hockey game, shoveling snow, a bottle drive and by donating money we raised on our own. In the end we raised $1,092. We presented cheques to Ms. Esther Klippert of Kidsport Calgary and Mr. Trevor Eagles from the Children’s Wish Foundation. We did this because we wanted to give back to our community, improve our self confidence and develop our character. Brendan Hoblak, #94 FREE Summer Drop-In Programming for Kids! Join in the summer fun with games, crafts and other amazing activities led by City of Calgary staff. August 3 - 6 Ranchlands School, 610 Ranchlands Blvd. N.W. Stay n’ Play: 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. (3 - 5 years of age) NOTE: Adult /guardian must accompany children in the Stay n’ Play program Park n’ Play: 10:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. (6 - 12 years of age) JULY 2010 THE RANCHLANDS ROUNDUP 13 Community News Municipal News DP2010-1595 is for a relaxation in height for a proposed retaining wall at 130- 6915 Ranchview Drive NW (Ranchlands Meadows Condominium). The walls to be replaced will be a maximum of 1.8 metres high, which exceeds the maximum of 1.0 metres. The DP allows the appearance, location, structural integrity and impact of the retaining walls to be reviewed. An engineering company has completed a site visit and provided designs to replace the existing wood walls systems beginning to show significant signs of distress. The walls retain the City of Calgary sidewalk located outside of the property line. Individual concrete block units will be dry stacked without mortar and placed on a leveling base of concrete. At the time of the report, a wooden fence with gapes between the boards and a maximum of 1.8 metres was specified for the top of the wall. The larger the gaps between the boards the less load transfer will occur from heavy wind events. This fence structure is to be installed to minimize the potential risks of falls. For more information you can contact the File Manager Christine Ho at 403-268-3623. DP2010-1673 Home Occupation Class 2 at 107 Range Way NW was for a Message Therapy Centre. The File Manager is Shelagh Giesbrecht 403-268-1551 or [email protected]. A notice advising neighbouring residents of the proposal has been issued concurrently with this circulation and was posted on the site for a one-week period. The business will operate 7 days a week, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. as a full time business. The applicant must live in the home with the home occupation. There can be only one employee or business partner working at the home who does not live at the home. The business cannot generate traffic to and from the home that is not characteristic of the neighbourhood. A business license may also be required for a home occupation. Phone 403-268-5521 for further information. The Land Use Bylaw provides that a home business must not generate more than 5 business-associated vehicles visits on any one day, to a maximum of 15 per week. A minimum of one additional parking stall is required for the business. The business cannot occupy any portion of the required parking stalls for the dwelling unit. When the Crowfoot C-Train Station opened on June 15, 2009, a pedestrian and vehicle count was performed at Ranchlands Boulevard and Ranchlands Way NW. A pedestrian corridor warrant review for flashing lights was undertaken using this count information. The pedestrian corridor warrant score is 24 points, which is below the 80 points needed for a corridor to be considered. The low score is due to a relatively low number of pedestrians crossing at this location. During the 6 hours of the count (07000900, 1100-1300, 1600-1800), 69 pedestrians were observed crossing Ranchlands Boulevard, or an average of about 12 per hour. In April of 2006, the same count was performed and yielded a warrant score of 16 points which is below the 80 point minimum score needed. The count data was two years old, in an established area. The City reviewed the collisions and operations history for roads intersecting with Ranchlands Boulevard. They were built in accordance with Canadian standards. The visibility of the painted crosswalks was also sufficient. The City has to make difficult decisions because they “do not have the resources to meet all the expectations of our citizens.” If you have any questions, you can contact Roads Operations Centre Coordinator 403-268-2513. Anne Burke JULY 2010 THE RANCHLANDS ROUNDUP 15 Community News 4th Annual Spring Clean-Up June 5... Another Raving Success! Rain in the early morning did not dampen our 4th Annual Spring Community Clean-up held Saturday June 5th. This year’s event was the biggest ever with many people taking advantage and returning 3, 4 and more times to off load their yard and renovation waste, and others. Two full trailer loads of hazardous waste were diverted from landfill and taken to the Hazardous Waste Depot at the Calgary Fire Department on 32nd Ave. N.W. (near U of C). Please forgive me if I forget a few of you but huge thanks go out to our youth volunteers from the 82nd Pathfinders (Tanya, Catherine, Megan, Stephanie and Katherine, led by Guider Janet) and Ranchlands Scouting (Tim, Kyle, Susan, Eric, Robin, Robert, Marlena, Tyler and Scouters Carl and Tina). Without our Sponsors and sponsor volunteers, this event would not be possible. Many thanks go out to Wendy from the Ranchlands Community As- sociation, the volunteers from City of Calgary Waste & Recycling, Alberta Beverage Container Recycling Corporation (ABCRC) and Recycle Logic, to suppliers from Navajo Metals and Shaw Traffic, and for sponsorship from City of Calgary Community Relations and Animal & Bylaw Services, Crowfoot CO-OP and Crowfoot Safeway. Beavertails were offered for donations with over $130 raised toward our Ranchlands Rover Crew (18 years) supertrip in 2011 to volunteer and help run the World Scout Jamboree in Sweden. Last and certainly not least, thank you for all the donations for the Charity Garage Sale being held June 12. An update on that event will be posted in the August Ranchlands Round-up. Next up: •Ranchlands Stampede Parade and Breakfast Saturday July 10 •Fall Registration for Girl Guides and Scouting (Date to be confirmed) Come to our classes!
