THE RANCHLANDS ROUNDUP AUGUST 2011 5 gratitude to Terry for his many years of dedicated service to our community. Terry works tirelessly in making our community a better place to live whether it’s as simple as changing a light bulb at the hall or making sure our Winter Fest is successful regardless of weather. Terry makes sure everyone has a great time whether it’s minus 25 degrees or plus 15 degrees; his dedication is unfailing. For our Stampede Breakfast it was not uncommon for Terry to receive all the tents, grills and everything the night before then show up at 6:30 a.m. to help with the set up then lead the parade, shake everyone’s hand and be one of the last people to leave after cleaning everything up. Thankfully today Terry has received well needed help to ease some of the burden, but remains ready if needed. Community News Thank You Terry Avramenko This space is normally reserved for the Ranchlands Community Association President, Terry Avramenko, but Terry has taken his Scouting group on a trip, so we, the RCA Board thought this would be a great time to recognize Terry’s community service. We would first like to pass on Terry’s thanks to all the people who attended the Ranchlands Community Stampede Breakfast with a special thanks to the many volunteers who make it happen and hope everyone had a great time at the greatest outdoor show in the world. The Board, on behalf of the entire community, wishes to express our Terry is always willing to do what is needed in our community, so thank you very much Terry for all your efforts and thanks also to Terry’s entire family for supporting Terry’s community service! The web registry is available to residents of Calgary and surrounding area, bordered by Lake Louise, Didsbury, Claresholm and Siksika First Nation. People can access the web registry at www.needadoctorcalgaryandarea.ca. City of Calgary Fall 2011 Learn to Skate Program: Norma Bush Arena. Wednesdays, Sep. 21 and Thu. Sep. 22. First Calgary Financial Forecasts a Million New Branches: In early June, over 200 First Calgary Financial employees and their families, along with Chief Executive Officer, Paul Kelly, gathered at Heritage Park to create a forest. 20 trees of varying species and 75 seedlings were placed in the ground and a commemorative bench was unveiled. The next time you visit Heritage Park, stroll by the Didsbury Bandstand and you'll see a small piece of First Calgary Financial’s commitment to the future of its members and employees, our community and our environment. And, in this International Year of the Forest, consider what it means to plant a tree. AUGUST 2011 THE RANCHLANDS ROUNDUP 15 Community News Municipal News Please join us for the annual general meeting on Wednesday, September 28, 2011, at the community hall, 7713 Ranchview Drive NW. at 7:00 p.m. The annual Ward 2 Advisory Group Bus Tour, starting from Creekside on Symons Valley Road, was on June 23. Some of the sites were: the Mormon Temple, Royal Vista Business Park, Inland Athletic Park, Tri Services & EMS, Sage Hill, and Symons Valley Ranch. A seniors’ assisted-living facility, Employment Centre, and the NW Recreation Centre are proposed for the Ward. On hand to answer questions from Community reps were City staff from Transportation, Transit, Parks, Development/Building Approvals, and Coordinated Safety Response Team— the multi-departmental committee tasked especially with looking at former Grow Ops and derelict properties. Each plant is valued at $1250. There are 600-800 tips through Crime Stoppers. Under the MGA Act, each property owner becomes responsible for environmental restoration. Some of the 200 unremediated houses will be leveled to the ground. DP2011-1976 was a change of use for a Secondary Suite in the basement of an existing single detached dwelling at 1152 Ranchlands Boulevard. The land use is Residential-Community Context—2. As a permitted use, there was no public notice posting. A bylaw check for compliance with the existing land use bylaw was conducted for the site and it found there are no relaxations requested. If you have any questions, you can contact the file manager at 403-268-2887. The grand opening of the new Mus- lim Youth Centre, at 7750 Ranchview Drive, was on June 7. The event was facilitated by the Muslim Council of Calgary, representing the city’s 60,000 Muslims. There were youth, religious, and political leaders attending. U.S. Ambassador to Canada David Jacobson (who was appointed in September, 2009) specifically requested a morning meeting, as part of U.S. President Barack Obama’s outreach to Muslim communities world-wide. The Steering Committee worked very hard and their Mission is to make it “a one-stop shop” over the next 10 years. The Centre was officially named the Stewards of Park 33 (across the street from the Centre). This initiative is funded by the Muslim Council of Calgary and supported by the City. They did a community clean-up of the park, as well as having fun with great sports like cricket, basketball, soccer, water balloons, and kick ball. As a first step to a NW Islamic Centre, 20 acres of land were bought in NW Calgary. To complete the purchase, $1.7 million must be paid by October 2011. Details are online at www.muslimsofcalgary.ca/nw. Anne Burke St. Rita Elementary School St. Rita Elementary is a Catholic school in Ranchlands that serves students in your community.
