On behalf of the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, the Middle East North Africa
(MENA) Club at Wharton, and the Arab and Middle Eastern student body, we are pleased to
welcome you to Wharton’s second annual MENA Business Conference taking place at the
University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia on Saturday, February 16, 2013.
This year’s conference, titled “Economies of Freedom: Reshaping the Future of the MENA
Region,” will shed light on the positive social and economic changes taking place in the region
today while uncertainty lingers over the political landscape. Our outstanding group of guest
speakers includes business executives, policy makers, foreign affairs experts, and global
scholars, who will engage in dialogue about the MENA region’s most pressing issues. Not only
will you hear our distinguished panelists’ local and global perspectives; you will have ample
opportunity to network with them one-on-one while enjoying the spectacular view from the top
floor of the Wharton School’s Huntsman Hall.

KEYNOTE
Alex Shalaby
Chairman of the Egyptian Company for
Mobile Services (Mobinil)
Alex Shalaby started his journey with Mobinil in 1998
as the Chief Officer of Regulatory Affairs helping set
up the first mobile operator in Egypt. As the CEO
and President of Mobinil between 2005 and 2008,
he led the company to a remarkable success tripling
its subscriber base, doubling revenue, and increasing
net profits by 30%. In 2008, he was appointed
Chairman of Mobinil, the position he currently holds.
Mr. Shalaby came to Mobinil from Washington, DC
where he was AT&T Director for Public Affairs and
served on the boards of the American Chamber of
Commerce becoming its president during the period
1991 – 1992.
In 1966, Alex Shalaby graduated with a Bachelors of
Science in Electrical Engineering from the University
of Alexandria and started his first job with Egypt
Air as Radio and Radar Engineer for two years. In
1969, he immigrated to the United States, where he
eventually settled in San Jose, California and started
his first job at Pacific Telephone and Telegraph.

Dr. Freddie Baz
Group CFO, Strategy Director, and Deputy Chairman of the
Group Executive Committee, Banque Audi Saradar Group
Freddie Baz joined the Banque Audi in 1991 as
advisor to the Chairman and founded the Secretariat
for Planning and Development at the Bank. As the
Group Chief Financial Officer and Strategy Director
of the Bank, he now has overall authority over
the finance and accounting, MIS and budgeting
functions throughout the Group, and is responsible
for the development of the Group strategy. He
is also the Chairman of the Board of Directors
of Bank Audi Saradar France sa, a fully owned
subsidiary of Bank Audi. Furthermore, Freddie Baz
is the Managing Director of Bankdata Financial
Services WLL which publishes Bilanbanques,
the only reference in Lebanon that provides an
extensive structural analysis of all banks located in
Lebanon.
Freddie Baz holds a State PhD degree in
Economics from the University of Paris I (Panthéon
– Sorbonne).

Joe Saddi
Global Chairman of Booz & Company
Joe Saddi is the global Chairman of Booz &
Company. He is a Senior Partner and Managing
Director of the firm’s Middle East business. He has
over 25 years of consulting experience in policy
formulation, corporate and business strategies,
organization and governance.
Over the years, he has led major privatization
programs in such sectors as oil and gas, mining,
steel, automotive, and consumer goods. Additionally,
he has advised governments on sector deregulation
and sector policy; and led the reorganization of
national oil companies and large corporations.
He also works closely with large family-owned
companies to help design governance and portfolio
strategies.
Mr. Saddi holds an MBA from Cornell University and
a Bachelor of Business Administration from ESSEC
in France.

Overview
Equal opportunity is key to any nation’s economic prosperity. The Arab Spring brought to the forefront the urgent need for more job growth
among women, who represent half of the MENA population. Socioeconomic pressures, continued political instability and an inability to gain
access to project financing continue to impede many women’s efforts to make a positive economic impact in the region. Despite these pressures,
there have been many inspiring stories of women who have challenged the status quo. The Women in Business panel is proud to host a number
of influential female role models who will talk about their challenging roles as business and policy leaders and their activities in promoting
women’s engagement in business.
Haifa Fahoum Al Kaylani
Founder and Chairperson of Arab
International Women’s Forum
Mrs Haifa Fahoum Al Kaylani, Founder Chairman,
Arab International Women’s Forum is well known in
international government and business circles as a
high-impact change agent focusing on leadership
in cultural and gender issues. An economist and
graduate of the American University of Beirut and
Oxford University, she brings a wide range of skills and
experience to her personal mission of encouraging
greater cultural understanding between Arab and
international communities, supporting a strong role for
women in that process. Mrs Al Kaylani holds senior
roles in several international organisations. These
include: VP International, Women’s Leadership Board
at Harvard University; Advisory Board Member of
both Middle East Institute, School of Oriental and
African Studies, University of London and Institute for
Women’s Studies in the Arab World, Lebanese American
University, Beirut; became the first Honorary Member,
the Euro Mediterranean Association for Cooperation
and Development. Mrs Al Kaylani is a Board Director
of the EastWest Institute; a Board Member, MENA –
OECD Business Council and serves as a Freeman and
Liveryman of the City of London.
Maha Al Ghunaim
Chairperson of Global
Investment House
Mrs. Maha Al- Ghunaim, founded Global Investment House in 1998. She came to Global from
Kuwait Foreign Trading Contracting & Investment Co.
(KFTCIC), the investment arm of Kuwait Investment
Company, which she had joined in 1982 after receiving
her Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from San
Francisco State University, California, USA. Mrs. Al
Ghunaim was promoted to chairperson of Global in
2007. She sits on the board of numerous companies in
the region. Mrs. Al-Ghunaim received notable regional
and international recognitions and has been named
among the “50 most admired executives in the GCC”
(Arabian Business, 2009) and “Top Financier of the
Year” (elan’s Top Entrepreneurs of the Year, 2009). She
was also listed among the “100 Most Influential Women
in The City” by Financial News in September 2009 and
in Forbes Magazine’s annual listing of “The 100 Most
Powerful Women in the World” for 2006, 2007 & 2008.
And among the “100 Most Powerful Arab Women” by
Forbes Middle East in 2012.

Sahar Nasr is the Lead Economist in the World Bank’s
Finance and Private Sector Development Department
of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). Ms. Nasr
is also the Regional Program Manager for the Micro,
Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) in MENA. In
her 17 years with the World Bank, she has worked in
technical and managerial positions in financial sector
reform, access to finance, small and medium enterprises development, microfinance, and private sector

development with a main focus on gender issues. Sahar
has mainstreamed gender in key operation in MENA
Region, including those aiming at attaining an inclusive
system through enhancing women’s access to finance,
as well as access to affordable housing for low- and
middle-income groups. Sahar has a number of publications on gender issues, including the economic security
of Arab women, and women’s economic empowerment
and political participation.
PANEL 2: ENTREPRENEURSHIP
Overview
The Entrepreneurship panel will highlight the role of venture capitalists, policy makers and experienced U.S. and Europe-based MENA
entrepreneurs in accelerating the growth of startups in the region. Our distinguished panelists will discuss regional dynamics that are helping
drive entrepreneurship in the MENA countries, including investments by developed nations and large Western firms, a booming youth population
and a rapid rise in mobile technology penetration.
Amir Khella
Entrepreneur, startup advisor,
and user experience designer,
Keynotopia
Over the past three years, Amir has designed and
helped launch more than a dozen startups, including
DocVerse (acquired by Google), Delve Networks
(acquired by LimeLight networks), TalentSpring
(acquired by TalentTech), SideReel (acquired by Rovi),
UStream, blist, and several others. His latest product,
Keynotopia, was launched in 3 hours, with a $47.50
budget, and had its first paying customer in the first
10 minutes. Amir has been featured on Inc magazine,
Entrepreneur magazine, Smashing Magazine, Swiss
Miss, and the unofficial apple weblog. Amir was born
in Egypt, and moved to the US in 2001 to pursue the
“AmirCan” dream.
Anthony Rabih Kory
CEO, Spreengs, PIM and PIMtech
Serial entrepreneur with Lebanese roots, Anthony
Rabih Kory created several companies in his native
Lebanon in the fields of advertising, marketing and
multimedia production. Subsequently, Anthony moved
to the US and created Spreengs and PIM becoming the
international market leader in retail and corporate video
cards technology. Anthony is currently working on his
latest startup, PIMtech, which provides a full solution for
theme parks using state of the art RFID technology and
animated video cards, allowing its visitors to take back
home a full video of their experience.

US internet start-ups and venture capital funds, and sits
on the board of advisors of The American University
of Cairo School of Business, the Jordanian incubator
Oasis500 and Middle East online entrepreneur network
Wamda. He is writing a book on start-ups in the
Arab World: “StartUp Rising — The Entrepreneurial
Revolution That’s Remaking the Middle East” — to be
published by MacMillan/Palgrave in August 2013.
Henri Asseily
Chief Strategist and CTO at Telnic,
Board member at Tweetstore, and
founder of Shopzilla/Bizrate
Henri Asseily is Chief Strategist and CTO for
Telnic Limited, the registry operator for the new
communications-focused .tel domain. Prior to his
position at Telnic, Henri co-founded Shopzilla, Inc.
(formerly BizRate.com) in 1996, which under his tenure
became the largest shopping search engine and one
of the first companies relying on data-driven online
marketing. Shopzilla was acquired by Scripps in 2005
for $569M. He graduated from The Wharton School
MBA class of 1996 from the University of Pennsylvania
and also holds a BA in Mathematics and Economics

Christopher M. Schroeder is a Washington D.C. and
New York City based internet entrepreneur and
venture investor. He was formerly co-founder and
CEO of HealthCentral, one of the largest social and
content platforms in health and wellness in the US,
sold in January 2012. Previously he was CEO of
washingonpost.newsweek interactive, and CEO of
LegiSlate.com. Schroeder has been an active supporter
of, writer and speaker on start-ups in the United States
and emerging growth markets — with particular focus

Overview
The Egypt and Tunisia panel will shed light on the “the new normal” in the two countries following the Arab Spring with a focus on the continuing
economic and social changes that are taking place. Our panelists will discuss opportunities and challenges that have arisen for specific industries,
geographies and demographics, as well as the prospects for internal and foreign investments.

Dr. Arbi Ben-Achour is a former Lead social safeguard
expert in the Africa region. During his 17 year tenure at
the World Bank, Mr. Ben-Achour led different positions:
Socio-economist in the Middle East and North Africa
region (1994-1996); Senior socio-economist in
the MENA region (1996-2004); Regional gender
coordinator (MENA) and representative of the region on
the Gender Board During FY 1997-1998; Coordinator
of the socio-economic team in the MENA region (19972004) and Senior social safeguard expert in the Africa
region (2004-2008). He holds a Doctor of Philosophy
(PhD) in Agricultural Economics with a Minor in Rural
Sociology (Social Change and Development) from the
University of Columbia Missouri and a Master of Arts,
Socio-economy of Development, from École des Hautes
Études en Sciences Sociales, Sorbonne, complemented
by a degree in agricultural development from IEDES
Sorbonne. As a socio-economist and a social safeguard
expert, Mr. Ben-Achour advised senior social safeguard
specialists working on highly complex and controversial
projects and provided socio-economic capacity building
in 31 African and Middle Eastern countries in projects
dealing with infrastructure, energy, education, health,
environment, forestry, agriculture and community based
development. Since his retirement in 2011, Mr. Arbi
Ben-Achour has become a World Bank Consulting
Advisor for category A projects in Mauritania, Benin,
Togo, Cameroun, Niger and DRC.
Ridha Chkoundali is also the Director of the Research
Unit on the Business Environment at the Faculty of
Economics and Management of Nabeul in Tunisia
(Carthage University). Prior to that, he was the Director of
studies at the Higher Institute of Management in Tunisia.
As a senior researcher and economist at the Tunisian
Institute of competitiveness and quantitative studies
(ITCEQ), his work focuses on economic policy, economic
development, governance, quality of public institutions,
Islamic banks, and Islamic financial products. He holds
a PhD in Economics and is the author of numerous
papers and studies in macroeconomics (economic
policies, governance, the FDI, the Tunisian economy,
etc.) and supervisor of a number of PhD theses. He
has participated on a number of occasions in different
radio and TV talk-shows. He is the representative of
the ENAHDHA party in several international economic
events, most recently at the Institut Europeu de la
Mediterrania IEMed economic forum in Barcelona.
Karim Helal
Chairman, ADI Capital (Abu
dhabi Islamic bank’s investment
banking arm in Egypt) and

Business Association
Prior to joining the MEI as adjunct scholar in 2008,
Dr. Zubair Iqbal worked with the International
Monetary Fund (IMF) for thirty five years, retiring
in 2007 as Assistant Director of the Middle East
and Central Asia Department. Before joining the
IMF, Iqbal worked as Senior Research Fellow,
Department of Economics, Islamabad University,
Islamabad, Pakistan. At the IMF, Iqbal held multiple
postings ranging from those for the development of
macroeconomic and exchange and trade policies
for adjustment and growth in member countries,
strategies for IMF-member country relations,
design of adjustment programs for the balance of
payments assistance and technical support. During
the period, Iqbal participated in missions to 54
countries in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Europe,
and Latin America. During the last two decades,
the primary focus was on the Middle Eastern and
Central Asian countries, including as mission leader
to 16 countries, both oil producers and oil importers.
He also served as senior advisor to the Saudi
Arabian Executive Director to the IMF. In addition
to operational work, Iqbal conducted and guided
research in trade policy issues, role and effectiveness
of foreign aid, external debt, Islamic banking and
finance, regional integration (primarily in the Middle
East), and transition from oil dependence to more
diversified economies. In the process, he wrote or
edited 5 books and over forty articles in the IMF and
external research publications.
Graduating with honors from Egypt’s prestigious Cairo
University with a BA in Business Administration, Karim
Helal started his career in banking in 1972 at the Arab
African International Bank as Head of International
Finance Department , later moving to Bahrain to
establish the banks new OBU subsidiary following which
he joined another regional bank based in Bahrain as
MD of the group operating in the GCC, South East Asia
and London. By 1982 Karim Helal had moved to London
as a Founding Partner at IFIN Corp. Investment Bank,
an exclusive boutique investment firm. In 1993 Karim
moved back to Egypt as an independent financial adviser
to the Dive Travel / Tourism Industry, establishing a
highly successful dive operation in the Red Sea and
Pioneered Technical Diving in the region. He was the
first chairman of the Diving & Water sports Tourism
Chamber and three times recipient of the Ministry of
Tourism Award for Contribution to Tourism.
Egypt for Asian companies . He led CI Capital investment
banking deals and transaction which resulted in CI
Capital becoming the best investment Bank in Egypt
according to the Egyptian Stock Exchange and Global
Trade Matters in 2010.
In June 2008, Returned to Cairo as the group CEO of CI
Capital Holding and has since led the company to new
heights. Upon his arrival at CI Capital Karim initiated
the launch of L.E 250 million SME focused private equity
fund, and launched the CI Capital “Look East’ initiate,
positioning CI Capital as the financial partner of choice in

While at the MEI, Iqbal has coordinated discussions
of the Working Group on Pakistan’s economy and
has been writing notes and articles on regional
developments, including Pakistan’s economic
challenges, factors underlying the democratic
movement in the Arab world, and outlook for the
future. In addition, he has been commenting on the
regional developments on the Voice of America, BBC,
and Bloomberg, besides national and international
newspapers.
During his tenure at CI Capital Holding till April 2011,
Karim Helal concluded a special relationship and an
official MOU with China Development Bank, forged
strategic partnership with DBS Bank (Singapore),
investment (Turkey), and the Korea Development
Bank. He also oversaw the launch of the ASIA PACIFIC
business of CI Capital in Hong Kong.
He is a regularly featured speaker at several Euro Money,
Super Returns, Global Trade Matters conferences,
International Global Forum of the American’s and events
in Cairo, Europe, Middle East, Asia, Canada and the USA.
He has also published articles and interviews in Forbes,
Oxford Business Group Reports, USA today, New York
Times, Institutional investor, Middle East Finance,
Euro Money Publications, MEED and Global Trade and
Investment Report. In September 2012, received the
Medays Business Award from the Amadeus Institute of
Morocco.

Overview
The energy industry in the Middle East and North Africa is facing profound challenges in light of a rapidly evolving political and social landscape in
the region and a slowing global economic environment. The panelists will give us some clarity on the current and future outlook for the industry
both regionally and globally. In doing this, they will address the most pressing issues facing the energy industry in the region as well as highlight
potential opportunities. We will also get a glimpse of the innovations being undertaken by firms and policymakers to meet the energy challenges
of tomorrow.
Dr. Paul Sullivan
Professor of Economics, National
Defense University Adjunct Professor,
Security Studies, Georgetown
At NDU, Professor Sullivan is also the lead of the Gulf
and Turkey Regional Security Study and on the faculty
of the Energy Industry Study. He is an Adjunct Professor
of Security Studies at Georgetown University, where
he teaches a very popular and long-running class on
“Energy and Security”. He is an Adjunct Senior Fellow
For Future Resource Security Threats at the Federation
of American Scientists. Dr. Sullivan is a weekly columnist
for newspapers in Turkey and Mongolia.
He is an internationally recognized expert on various
aspects of the energy-international security nexus. His

Rabah Arezki is a Senior Economist at the IMF Research
Department. During his career at the Fund, he worked in
the African, Fiscal Affairs, the Middle East and Central
Asia Departments and Institute for Capacity Development at the IMF. He has written on natural resources,
economic development, governance and macro-finance.
He has published widely in academic and other journals, including The Economic Journal, the Journal of
International Economics, the Journal of Development
Economics, and the European Economic Review. He has
also been cited in leading newspapers, including The
Economist, Financial Times and The Wall Street Journal.

work often has a special focus on the nexus of energy,
water, food and land. He is an expert on issues related to
the economics, politics, militaries, and more of the Middle
East and North Africa. Professor Sullivan is frequently
quoted and interviewed by, and has advised the media
on five continents. He is a frequent contributor to highlevel meetings and conferences, and regularly advises
leadership on various issues. Dr. Sullivan has a Ph.D. from
Yale in Economics, graduated Summa Cum Laude from
Brandeis University, and is a graduate of the prestigious
Seminar XXI Program at MIT.
Dr. Sara Vakhshouri is the President of SVB Energy
International in Washington DC. She previously worked
as an Energy Market Analyst and Advisor to the Director
of the National Iranian Oil Company International (NIOCI)
which priced, marketed and sold Iranian crude oil.
Dr. Vakhshouri has a PhD in Energy Security and Middle
Eastern Studies and two MA’s in Business Management
(International Marketing) and in International Relations.
She is also a published scholar having authored various
articles published in The Economist, Oil and Gas Journal,
Tawfik S. Diab
Managing Director, PICO
International Petroleum
Tawfik S. Diab is the Managing Director of PICO International Petroleum (PIP), the leading Egyptian Independent
E&P Company. Tawfik joined PIP in 2003 with a vision
to transform what at the time was a minor player in the
Egyptian E&P market. As part of the strategic plan, he
also redirected the company operations to position PIP
to be an expert in the redevelopment of oil and gas fields.
Tawfik Diab graduated in June 1998 with a Bachelor of
Science in Mechanical Engineering from the American
University in Cairo. Later that year he joined the PICO
conglomerate in Egypt as an investment/portfolio
manager at its investment arm “PICO Investments” which

Journal and The Huffington Post. She has regularly been
interviewed and cited by the BBC, VOA, Reuters, Energy

Managing Director. Tawfik Diab also represents the
interest of PICO Group in several ventures including
representation on the Board of Al Ahly for Development
and Investments, and the Board of Cairo Financial Holding Co. (“CFH”). He is also a member of many economic
associations in Egypt.
He has co-edited two books entitled Beyond the Curse:
Policies to Harness the Power of Natural Resources and
Commodity Price Volatility and Inclusive Growth in LowIncome Countries both published by the International
Monetary Fund.
Rabah has a PhD in Economics from The European University Institute, an M.Sc. in Statistics from Ecole Nationale
de la Statistique et de l’Administration Economique (ENSAE), an M.A. in Economics and an M.Sc. in Econometrics
from The University of Pantheon-Sorbonne.

Shwan Taha
Chairman, Rabee Securities
Shwan has over ten years of experience in managing
money in the MENA region, including Turkey,
Greece and Pakistan. From 1997 to 2006 Shwan
worked for Franklin Templeton as part of Mark
Mobius’s emerging markets team, responsible for
investments in the MENA region, he established
two research and investment offices one in Dubai
and the second in Istanbul. In 2006 Shwan joined
a two-man team to manage a hedge fund that was
funded and sponsored by George Soros. Shwan
has left the partnership with Soros and founded
Melak investments, an investment advisory firm
concentrating on opportunities in Iraq. Shwan is
also the chairman of Rabee Securities, a premier
Iraqi Stock Exchange Firm, founded in Baghdad in
1995 and regulated by the Iraq Stock Exchange with
offices in Baghdad, Erbil Sulaymaniyah and Istanbul.
Shwan obtained a biomedical engineering degree
from Case Western Reserve University and an MBA
from George Washington University.

Graduating with honors from Egypt’s prestigious
Cairo University with a BA in Business Administration,
Karim Helal started his career in banking in 1972
at the Arab African International Bank as Head of
International Finance Department , later moving to
Bahrain to establish the banks new OBU subsidiary
following which he joined another regional bank
based in Bahrain as MD of the group operating in the
GCC, South East Asia and London. By 1982 Karim
Helal had moved to London as a Founding Partner
at IFIN Corp. Investment Bank, an exclusive boutique
investment firm. In 1993 Karim moved back to Egypt
as an independent financial adviser to the Dive Travel
/ Tourism Industry, establishing a highly successful
dive operation in the Red Sea and Pioneered Technical
Diving in the region. He was the first chairman of the
Diving & Water sports Tourism Chamber and three
times recipient of the Ministry of Tourism Award for
Contribution to Tourism.
He led CI Capital investment banking deals and
transaction which resulted in CI Capital becoming
the best investment Bank in Egypt according to the
Egyptian Stock Exchange and Global Trade Matters
in 2010.

Given the current changes in the regional political landscape and the slowing global economies, the MENA region’s investment climate continues
to evolve. Growth in the MENA region is expected to be stronger in 2013 relative to last year despite the ongoing social and political instability.

Stephen M. Sammut is a venture partner focused on
special projects for the firm (Latin America, the Middle
East, Japan and emerging markets). During his career he
has been involved in the creation of nearly 40 biotechnology, Internet, and information technology companies.
His experience includes Vice President of S.R. One (the
venture fund of Glaxo SmithKline),Vice President of
Corporate Development at Teleflex Incorporated, Managing Director of Technology Transfer at the University of
Pennsylvania, and Founder and CEO of one of the first
and largest transplant organ banks in the United States.
He is on numerous Boards of Directors and Advisory
Boards, including Mitsubishi International Corporation,
Combinent BioMedical Systems, Gentis, and Dynamis
Therapeutics. In addition, he is on the boards of the Cornell University Research Foundation, the Massachusetts
General Hospital Technology Transfer Committee, and the
American Type Culture Collection. Mr. Sammut holds an
academic appointment as Senior Fellow in Entrepreneurship and Health Care Systems at the Wharton School of
the University of Pennsylvania, where he teaches courses
on venture capital, private equity in emerging markets,
intellectual property strategy, biotech entrepreneurship,
and private sector participation in global health. He is also
an advisor to the joint MBA/Masters in Biotechnology
Program. He holds graduate and undergraduate degrees
in biological sciences and humanities from Villanova
University, attended Hahnemann Medical College for two
years, and holds an MBA from the Wharton School of the
University of Pennsylvania.
Based in Cairo, Mohammed M. Fahmi is a Director at
EFG-Hermes’ Investment Banking Division. Mohamed
Fahmi joined EFG-Hermes Investment Banking in
early 2006 after completing the Morgan Stanley Analyst
Training program. Mohammed holds a Bachelor of Arts
in Accounting and Finance from the American University in Cairo, from where he graduated with high honors.
Notable transactions include the sale of an 18.8% stake
in Commercial International Bank (CIB) to Ripplewood;
the initial public offering of Al Arafa for Investment and
Consultancies; the sale of a 49% stake of Tarek Nour
Holding to DDB; the acquisition of Italy’s Forall Group
(Pal Zileri) by Al Arafa for Investment and Consultancies;
the acquisition of a 50% stake in Syria’s Palmyra for
Real Estate Development by SODIC; the sale of Olympic
Group for Financial Investments to Electrolux AB; and
the private placement for Wadi Degla for Investments S.A.E.

Amadeus Institute of Morocco.
