Telling Kentucky’s Story The Kentucky Humanities Council, Inc. is an independent, nonprofit corporation affiliated with the National Endowment for the Humanities. The Council is supported by the National Endowment and private contributions. We are not a state agency, and we do not receive state funds. We are, however, a proud partner of Kentucky’s Tourism, Arts, and Heritage Cabinet. In addition to sharing the unique experience of Kentucky Chautauqua® and the diverse knowledge of our Speakers Bureau, the Kentucky Humanities Council celebrates literacy by bringing PRIME TIME Family Reading Time® to libraries across the Commonwealth, produces Kentucky Humanities magazine, and brings Smithsonian Institution traveling exhibits to community museums throughout the state. Visit us online at kyhumanities.org. 2 Telling Kentucky’s Story Report to the People 2014 Board and Staff Bringing the Humanities to the Commonwealth F ounded in 1972, the Kentucky Humanities Council has reached every county in Kentucky, investing more than $14 million in public humanities programs throughout the state. The Kentucky Humanities Council is governed by a 23-member volunteer board of directors — 18 are elected by the board of directors, five are appointed by the Governor. Our board members represent every region of Kentucky. The Council is grateful for their service and commitment to furthering the mission of Telling Kentucky’s Story. The Kentucky Humanities Council participated in a reading and discussion program called “Talking Service” which uses a compilation of readings, essays, and poetry entitled Standing Down: From Warrior to Civilian. This program was designed to bring 15-20 veterans together, of their own accord, to read passages from the book and have an open-ended discussion to get veterans talking about their military service. Critical to this effort was to conduct the reading and discussion program in a safe environment. The discussions were led by a trained scholar who is also a veteran of military service, and were held at four Kentucky sites: 4 • • • • Bowling Green hosted by the Upward Bound Veterans Program at Western Kentucky University Lexington hosted by the Catholic Action Center (this program was specifically targeted to homeless veterans) Fort Knox hosted by the Army Community Service, Soldier & Family Assistance Center, and U.S. Army MWR Fort Campbell/Hopkinsville hosted by the Fort Campbell Chapter Association of the United States Army and the Kentucky New Era In addition to the “Talking Service” programs, the Kentucky Humanities Council offered Kentucky Chautauqua® programs to community organizations that serve military veterans at no cost. Those organizations included the Paul Patton Eastern Kentucky Veterans Center, Thomson-Hood Veterans Center, Western Kentucky Veterans Center, Lexington Veterans Administration Medical Center, Barr Memorial Library, and Morehead State University. Telling Kentucky’s Story Report to the People 2014 PRIME TIME Family Reading Time® P Enriching Families Through Reading Together RIME TIME Family Reading Time is a family literacy program that uses the humanities to create excitement about reading and discussing books. Using a combination of award-winning children’s books as well as humanities themes and open discussion, Prime Time connects literature to the real world. Prime Time seeks to engage families with low-income, low-literacy skills, and limited or no English language abilities. The program is designed for parents and their 6- to 10-year-old children who are at-risk due to poor reading ability. Prime Time Family Reading Time programs are conducted in 90-minute sessions, weekly, for six weeks. A professional storyteller uses the provided children’s literature to demonstrate effective read-aloud techniques. A Prime Time scholar leads lively discussions based on the books and humanities themes including fairness, greed, courage, and dreams. Multilingual Prime Time programs are tailored to the needs of non-English speaking families. Books are translated into the appropriate languages; storytelling and discussion are supported by trained translators and team members. Books included in the program consist of culturally diverse stories from around the world spanning fairy tales, folk tales, fables, historical accounts, and other narrations of real-life circumstances familiar to adults and children alike. Prime Time allows families to bond around the act of reading and transforms them into lifelong readers. It creates the precondition for all learning and helps to end the cycle of intergenerational illiteracy. In 2014, the Kentucky Humanities Council sponsored 21 Prime Time Family Reading Time programs in 18 counties throughout the state. More than 950 Kentuckians participated in the family literacy program. Having sponsored Prime Time for 11 years, the Kentucky Humanities Council has sponsored 169 programs throughout the Commonwealth, impacting nearly 9,000 people. The Kentucky Humanities Council is proud to partner with the Kentucky Department for Libraries, the Appalachian Regional Commission, Blue Grass Community Foundation, Duke Energy, Republic Bank, Wood and Marie C. Hannah Foundation, Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities, and the National Endowment for the Humanities to continue bringing this life-altering literacy program to libraries across Kentucky. Publications K Sharing Kentucky’s Culture entucky Humanities magazine provides readers with unique stories of Kentucky’s history, culture, and people. In 2014 the Kentucky Humanities Council distributed more than 32,000 copies of Kentucky Humanities magazine, reaching readers in every Kentucky county. In addition to delivering Kentucky Humanities to mailboxes across the Commonwealth, the magazine can also be found in the guest rooms at all of Kentucky’s state parks. Current and previous issues of the magazine are posted in their entirety at kyhumanities.org. The Humanities Catalog offers a detailed overview of the presentations offered by the Kentucky Humanities Council’s Speakers Bureau and Kentucky Chautauqua®. From talks about Kentucky cuisine, horse racing in the Bluegrass, and the Civil War, to Chautauqua presentations including Harland “Colonel” Sanders and Pee Wee Reese, the Humanities Catalog details programs perfect for your classroom or community group. More than 7,000 copies of the Humanities Catalog were distributed in 2014, and it is always available online at kyhumanities.org. In 2014, our Kentucky Chautauquans brought 147 programs to community organizations throughout Kentucky — libraries, church groups, book clubs, historical societies, association meetings, college campuses, and veterans’ groups, just to name a few. More than 12,000 people attended Kentucky Chautauqua programs last year. Gathered audiences experienced Kentucky stories including Mary Todd Lincoln’s trials and triumphs, Adolph Rupp’s legendary basketball career, and Mary Settles’ life as a Shaker at Pleasant Hill. Since we began the Kentucky Chautauqua program in 1992, the Kentucky Humanities Council has brought to life nearly 70 figures from Kentucky’s past. Chautauqua in the Schools Bringing Kentucky History to Classrooms Across the Commonwealth I n 2004, the Kentucky Humanities Council began delivering Kentucky Chautauqua programs to classrooms throughout the Commonwealth, providing educators an innovative and affordable way to teach their students about Kentucky’s unique history and culture. Our 28 Chautauqua dramas cover topics including Colonial Days, the Civil War, slavery, Kentucky music, and civil rights, providing students with a unique experience that is both educational and entertaining. Last year our Kentucky Chautauquans delivered 192 programs to schools all over the state, reaching more than 20,000 Kentucky students. Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors and underwriters, Kentucky Chautauquans can visit elementary, middle, and high school classrooms throughout Kentucky at minimal cost to the schools. 6 Telling Kentucky’s Story Report to the People 2014 Speakers Bureau Telling Kentucky’s Stories T he Kentucky Humanities Council developed a Speakers Bureau in 1986. Since its beginning, Speakers Bureau members have given nearly 5,000 presentations to more than 250,000 people. As one of the Council’s longest running programs, the Speakers Bureau continues to expand and to be in demand throughout the state. Our 2014 Speakers Bureau featured a diverse group of 58 Kentucky scholars, authors, and historians, offering more than 120 talks on everything from poetry, religion, bourbon, music, horses, to history. Members of our Speakers Bureau gave 99 presentations to community groups throughout the Commonwealth last year. Nearly 5,000 people attended these talks. kyhumanities.org 7 Report to the People 2014 Programs Map Reaching Across the Commonwealth Kentucky Chautauqua® Chautauqua in the Schools Speakers Bureau PRIME TIME Family Reading Time® Community Grants Kentucky Humanities magazine — EVERYWHERE! 3 3 Meade 1 Hancock 1 Henderson 2 Union 2 1 Webster Livingston 3 Ballard 1 2 Hickman Fulton 1 8 Graves Trigg 1 1 Calloway 1 Ohio 1 1 4 4 Telling Kentucky’s Story Edmonson Barren 2 Logan 6 2 Warren 1 Todd L Hart 1 1 Christian 1 Grayson Butler Muhlenberg 3 3 Hardin 6 8 1 Marshall Carlisle 1 Caldwell Lyon 2 Hopkins 2 1 McCracken 3 Crittenden 1 2 Daviess McLean 3 Breckinridge 1 Simpson 1 2 Allen 1 Mo Report to the People 2014 1 5 Boone 1 2 1 Gallatin 4 1 1 11 efferson 5 ullitt Nelson 1 roe 4 7 Garrard 10 Madison 4 5 1 1 Adair 8 2 Russell Cumberland 2 2 Clinton 2 1 Wayne 4 1 Pulaski 8 McCreary 5 1 3 Knox 1 Whitley 1 2 6 4 Knott 2 5 2 1 Letcher Leslie 1 1 Pike 1 Breathitt Perry Laurel 1 Floyd Clay 4 1 6 Martin 6 2 Magoffin 1 2 2 Wolfe Owsley 6 Johnson 3 Lee Jackson Rockcastle 1 1 1 Estill 6 Morgan 1 3 Powell 1 1 Lawrence Elliott 5 Menifee 1 3 5 1 Montgomery Casey 1 1 1 8 4 2 1 Boyle 2 1 Lincoln Taylor 3 7 4 Green Metcalfe Jessamine Clark Rowan 1 2 2 3 17 2 3 23 Mercer 3 1 2 4 4 Marion ue Fayette 7 4 2 1 Washington 1 1 Woodford 1 1 1 1 Bath Bourbon 1 Boyd Carter Fleming 1 1 Greenup 3 Nicholas 1 5 Lewis Robertson 1 Scott 2 Mason Harrison 3 2 2 1 4 Franklin 12 Bracken Pendleton 10 2 Anderson 2 2 4 6 1 6 1 2 4 Shelby Spencer 1 Grant 1 5 Kenton Owen Henry 2 Oldham 1 1 Trimble Carroll 8 1 2 2 Campbell 1 Harlan 1 3 Bell 1 kyhumanities.org 9 Report to the People 2014 Our Donors Thank You for Your Generous Support Scroll of Honor Those on our Scroll of Honor have donated a lifetime total of more than $10,000 to the Kentucky Humanities Council.
