A Commitment to Improvement
Chapter 3
A Commitment to Improvement
One of the core tenets of KPJ Healthcare Berhad
is to “strive for continuous improvement”, and
this rings true in an organisation that places great
focus on human capital development. Whether it is
enhancing the quality of staff and specialists through
leadership programmes and higher-education
courses, raising the level of the nursing profession
through the KPJ International University College of
Nursing and Health Sciences, or bringing in new
technologies to the medical sector in Malaysia, KPJ
demonstrates its Commitment to Improvement.

Enhancing Talents,
Transforming People
For KPJ Healthcare Berhad, striving for continuous
improvement is one of its core values, and it has
demonstrated this throughout its 30 years by
constantly investing in and encouraging its 800
doctors and more than 8,000 nurses, managers,
and other staff to improve their skills and
knowledge. This commitment to human capital
development has therefore allowed KPJ Healthcare
hospitals to better serve and deliver the best
services to patients, and remain the market leader
in Malaysia’s private healthcare sector.

A Learning Organisation
KPJ prides itself on being a learning organisation and practices the
values of Transformational Leadership, where both management
and non-management staff work to improve and enhance
each others’ capabilities. Through this, all team members are
transformed from being ordinary to extraordinary, with personal
excellence being one of the drivers of corporate excellence.
Furthermore, the organisation also has a talent management
programme which is used to identify staff members who will be
mentored into leadership positions. Thus, future senior executives
and managers are usually organically grown and nurtured rather
than brought in from outside, which ensures continuity as the
next generation of leaders have been imbued with the KPJ DNA.
Apart from internal training and enhancement programmes,
promising executives and managers are also given opportunities
to enrol in higher education courses. For example, every year,
KPJ sends several executives to enrol in the MBA programme at
Henley Management College in London, as part of an arrangement
Henley has with Johor Corporation. Apart from that, KPJ executives
have also been seconded to pursue an MBA in Healthcare
Management from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM).
Enhancing Nursing Excellence
KPJ’s nurses are among its pride and joy. Therefore it comes
as no surprise that the organisation invests heavily in the
development of its nurses - not only through the KPJ International
University College (KPJIUC) of Nursing and Health Sciences but
also by encouraging them to pursue bachelor’s, masters, and
even doctoral degrees. In fact, KPJ has an arrangement with
the University of South Australia to provide Masters programmes
for KPJ nurses.
Apart from degree programmes, courses are often conducted
to ensure that the nurses’ knowledge and skills are up to date.
These include short programmes on disciplines such as Critical
Care Nursing, Renal Nursing, Paediatric Nursing and others.
Furthermore, some nurses are also seconded to overseas hospitals
both inside and outside the KPJ Group to enable them to hone
their skills and experience working with international patients.

Sharing Excellence
One of the ways that KPJ Healthcare
ensures that best practices are part and
parcel of the psyche of its medical and
non-medical staff is through the holding of
annual meetings and conferences such as
the PEDOMAN and the Medical Conference.
These values on enhancing services are
shared and disseminated to one another.

National Medical Conference & Workshop
In order to maintain its status as the leading private healthcare
provider in Malaysia, KPJ also constantly strives to ensure that its
medical professionals are up to date with the latest developments
in their field of expertise. Apart from encouraging its specialists to
keep themselves abreast of breakthroughs in medical sciences
and technology, KPJ Healthcare also organises an Annual National
Medical Conference & Workshop, which has been on-going since
2001, and which – in 2009 – became a twice-a-year event.
The Conference brings together the medical professionals
of KPJ so that they can discuss and share knowledge
and experiences related to the conference theme. This
is very much in line with the concept of Transformational
Leadership where each stakeholder plays a part in enhancing
the skills of others.
The themes of the Annual Medical Workshop & Conference from
2006 to 2010 were:
2006 – Clinical Risk Management - A Practical Approach Towards
Patient Safety (held at Pesada International Convention
Centre, Johor Bahru)
2007 – Clinical Governance: Effective Implementation &
Monitoring (held at Selesa Beach Resort, Port Dickson)
2008 – Enhancing The Culture of Safety & Quality
2009 – Assuring Patient Safety (held in July at Selesa Beach
Resort, Port Dickson)
2009 – Patient Safety – Role of Infection Control Programme &
Information Technology System (held in December at
Equatorial Hotel, Bangi)
2010 – Patient Safety: Challenges in Implementation &
Governance (held in June at Sibu Island Resort, Johor)
2010 – Clinical Leadership In Promoting A Culture For Patient
Safety (held in November at Selesa Beach Resort, Port

In Pursuit of Quality
As part of its efforts to continuously seek ways to improve the quality
of care provided by its hospitals, KPJ Healthcare Berhad organises the
yearly KPJ Quality Convention which promotes improvements in quality
and teamwork as well as encourages innovation among its staff.

The PEDOMAN or annual staff gathering is one of the most eagerly
awaited events in the KPJ calendar. On that day, the senior management
will share information on the progress and aspirations for the coming
year with the staff. At the same time, the core values of KPJ are
reiterated and reinforced. Through transparent and frank discussion,
all levels of KPJ’s corporate structure are streamlined and synchronised
with one common goal and direction in mind.
Each PEDOMAN has a theme of its own, and since 2006, these include
2006 – Continuous Dedication To Caring For Life
2007 – Together We Continuously Care For Our Customers
2008 – Business Jihad
2009 – Business Jihad

Nurses Of The Future...
Nurses For The World.
Since its inception as the Puteri Nursing College
(PNC) in 1991, KPJ International University
College (KPJIUC) of Nursing and Health Sciences
has earned itself a reputation for being one of the
premier institutions of nursing in the region. A
brainchild of KPJ Healthcare Berhad’s Managing
Director, Datin Paduka Siti Sa’diah Sheikh Bakir, the
College is a manifestation of her vision for KPJ to
produce its own nurses who will be instilled with the
core values of care that define the organisation.

through partnerships with reputable

(second from the right) – the wife
of Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’
Seri Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak –

of KPJIUC in 2006.
The first intake in September 1991 saw 30 pioneering students enrolled in the
College, all of whom later graduated three years later after achieving 100%
passes in the Malaysian Nursing Board Final Examination. Those results set the
stage for future success and to date, each and every intake has achieved the
same perfect pass rate.
In August 2003, the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Home Affairs granted
permission for the College to commence recruitment of international students.
This allowed KPJIUC to open its doors to overseas enrolment and impart the
KPJ way of nursing to students from all over the world. Since then, aspiring
nurses from China, Nigeria, Myanmar, Nepal, Indonesia, Vietnam and the
United Kingdom have learned the arts and skills of the vocation at the KPJ
International University College (KPJIUC) of Nursing and Health Sciences.
Another milestone was the decision in October 2004 by the National Accreditation
Board to recognise the College’s home-grown Diploma in Nursing Programme
– a significant achievement as it gave the seal of approval to KPJIUC’s curriculum
and methodology. Other than its Diploma in Nursing, KPJIUC also offers diplomas
in health sciences and other procedures such as a Diploma in Medical Imaging.
Furthermore, KPJIUC has also collaborated with a number of renowned
international universities to offer degree and post-degree courses for student
nurses. These include a Bachelor of Nursing degree, as well as Nursing
Education, Critical Care Nursing, Paediatric Nursing, Renal Nursing, and Health
Management and Leadership Programmes with the University of South Australia.
It also has a partnership with Edith Cowan University in Western Australia on
a Paediatric Nursing programme, while its Certificate in Operating Department
Practice (ODP) is offered together with Liverpool John Moores University in the
United Kingdom.
A Commitment to Improvement

In the 1990s, KPJ Healthcare Berhad
made its foray into the education
sector with the building of its Puteri
Nursing College. It then upgraded
its facility by acquiring 6.8 hectares
of land in Nilai, to build the KPJ
International College of Nursing and
Health Sciences – the construction
work for which can be seen here
(left). Recently, it acquired University
College status, and is is now known
as KPJ International University
College of Nursing and Health
Sciences (below).
Perhaps what really sets the KPJ International University College
of Nursing and Health Sciences apart from the rest is that it is able
to deliver the ideal balance between theory and practice. Being
the education wing of an established healthcare group, it provides
students with a platform to apply what they have learned in the
classrooms.
Thus, it can be confidently said that KPJIUC is ticking all the right
boxes as it strives to fulfil its three-pronged objectives – of meeting
the nursing requirements of KPJ Healthcare Berhad, enhancing
the quality of the nursing profession, and assisting the Ministry of
Health in training nurses.
For the past 20 years, the KPJ International University College
of Nursing and Health Sciences has been living up to its motto
of striving “Towards Excellence in Nursing Education and
Healthcare Services”. With its state-of-the-art main campus in
Kota Seriemas, Nilai, Negeri Sembilan and one branch campus
each in Johor and Penang, KPJIUC is fulfilling the global need
for quality nursing professionals. With its recently awarded
University College status, it is set to open a new chapter in its
already illustrious story.

Cutting-edge Technology
In line with one of its
corporate values of
striving for continuous
improvement, KPJ
Healthcare Berhad has
invested heavily to bring
in state-of-the-art medical,
diagnostics and treatment
technologies into its
hospitals. Through such
commitment, patients at
KPJ hospitals, as well as
their families, have peace
of mind and heart, knowing
that the treatment provided
is done with the aid of the
most advanced equipment
around. Coupled with the
famed dedication to care
that is inherent in all KPJ
staff and the expertise
of its specialists, these
technologies are raising the
standards of healthcare
– not just among the KPJ
family of hospitals but
throughout Malaysia
and the region too.
64-Slice Computer Tomography (CT) machine
Among the most advanced machines in computer tomography (CT)
scan technology, the 64-slice CT machine uses multiple detectors to
create images of the body. It is especially useful for cardiac scans as it
is able to capture the shape and image of the organ, even though the
heart is in constant motion. At KPJ Healthcare Berhad, 17 hospitals
have such machines installed, thus enabling their doctors to better
diagnose and treat patients.

The 1.5 Tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Scanner is
a state-of-the-art imaging technology that creates images of the
body using strong magnetic field combined with radio waves.
Unlike X-Rays and CT Scanners, MRI Scanners do not use
x-rays radiation, thus protecting the well-being of the patient.

Cardiac Catheterization and
Angiography
A specialised X-ray procedure done by cardiologists
to diagnose narrow, blocked, enlarged or malformed
arteries or veins of the heart and other organs. It involves
the insertion of a long slender tube called a catheter
into a large artery where it is carefully threaded through
the artery until it nudges at its tip. A special form of
liquid dye is then injected into the artery through the
catheter after which the X-ray images are taken. It is a
real time X-rays procedure where the images are viewed
immediately and diagnosed.

Linear Accelerator (LINAC)
One of the great scourges of modern times, cancer has often
been a cause of anxiety and grief among many families. At
KPJ Damansara Specialist Hospital, a Radiotherapy and
Oncology Centre has been set up to help treat people affected
by cancer – a task which is aided by the installation of the
latest linear accelerator. Otherwise known as LINAC,
this machine produces high energy x-ray beams which are
targeted at the affected part of the body. The LINAC at KPJ
Healthcare Berhad, is the latest of its kind and is able to
deliver microwaves in a more precise manner thus sparing
surrounding healthy tissue from damage.

Extracorporeal Shock Wave
Lithotripsy (ESWL)
Kidney or renal problems are becoming
increasingly prevalent in Malaysia. As a leader
in healthcare, KPJ has backed up its commitment
to patient care by bringing in equipment to help
combat this problem, including the installation
of the latest generation lithotripters into ten of
its hospitals. These machines are capable of
performing extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy
(ESWL) – a procedure in which a high-voltage
spark or electromagnetic impulse generates a
shock wave that is then targeted at a kidney stone,
which is then shattered and later passed through
the urinary tract. As the focus of the shock waves is
the stone, other parts of the body are preserved.
