S U MM E R 2015 T H A T ’S T H E B E A U T Y of S N O W M A S S Tucked in the heart of the Colorado Rockies, just 9 miles outside of Aspen, Snowmass Village delivers on your elevated expectations. Majestic mountain views, massive mountain terrain, slopeside lodging, new dining and amenities, and unparalleled adventures for families, couples and friends are what you’ll find at this dynamic, world-class resort. ICE AGE DISCOVERY In October 2010, a bulldozer operator working near Snowmass Village uncovered the tusk of a young female mammoth. Over the next 10 months the Denver Museum of Nature and Science conducted its largest-ever fossil excavation yielding a treasure of well-preserved Ice Age fossils. This discovery led to the finest alpine Ice Age fossil trove in the world, Colorado’s most important fossil discovery ever and the largest discovery of mastodons (35) in the world. SNOWMASS ICE AGE DISCOVERY CENTER Photos courtesy of the Denver Museum of Nature & Science. Snowmass is the only mountain resort with an on-staff, Paleontology Interpreter. Visit the recently updated exhibit and check out the new Interpretive Lab complete with fossils representative of most of the 10 large mammals discovered in Snowmass as well as actual peat from the 2010 dig that includes microscopic fragments of bones, insects, plant life and small mammals. The Ice Age Discovery Center on the Snowmass Mall is built for kids with plenty of things for adults to enjoy too. Open daily from 10:00am to 5:00pm. Admission is FREE. Call 970.922.2277 for more information. WHAT’S COMING Snowmass Discovery, an independent 501(c)3 non-profit organization, has been created to continue the science and programming associated with this historic discovery through the exploration of Snowmass by creating engaging experiences that celebrate the finest alpine Ice Age discovery in North America. Snowmass Discovery is working to ensure that the legacy of this discovery lives on for generations to come.
