For over 50 years, Kenny Rogers has delivered
memorable songs that cross genres of rock, pop
and country. Before superstardom, he performed
with the First Edition, boasting million-sellers like Ruby,
Don’t Take Your Love to Town. A three-time Grammy
winner with numerous country music awards, a
lifetime achievement award, over 70 charted singles
including 18 number ones, Rogers has also hosted 12 TV specials and performed
duets with some of country’s biggest stars. Today, he lends his celebrity to a
series of concerts, films, television specials and a fast food restaurant. Kenny
Rogers is an icon, a Hall-of-Famer and one of the biggest names in music
worldwide.
Raised in Georgia by his mom, Jason spent summers
in Florida with his dad, where he learned early to
play guitar. After performing on the southeastern
seaboard for seven years, his sound, inspired by
George Strait, Alabama and Hank Williams Jr., helped
land a record contract. Aldean has rocketed to
stardom behind his two platinum albums, 2005’s Jason
Aldean and 2007’s Relentless. The records produced six Top 10 Country singles
including the #1 smash, Why. She’s Country, the lead single off his new album
Wide Open, hit #2 earlier this year.

Formed in 1998, the quartet’s original members-Karen
Fairchild, Kimberly Schlapman, Jim Westbrook and
Phillip Sweet, rely on harmonies that allow all four
members to alternate as lead singers. Their self-titled
debut was released in 2002 where it produced two
minor singles. By 2005, the group signed Clint Black’s
indie label, Equity Music Group, where their second
album, The Road to Here, went platinum in the USA, producing consecutive Top
Ten singles on the country charts in Boondocks and Bring It On Home. To date,
the group has released three albums and charted 11 songs on the Billboard
Hot Country Songs charts.
.
Virginia-born Vassar debuted in the late 1990s, cowriting singles for country artists like Tim McGraw, Jo
Dee Messina, and Alan Jackson. In 1999, he was
named ASCAP’s Country Songwriter of the Year and
signed with Arista Nashville as a recording artist. In
2000 his first album produced five hit singles on the
Billboard’s country charts and was certified gold in the
USA. After three more albums, he left Arista for Universal South in 2006. His next
album, Prayer of a Common Man, was released in early 2008. Vassar’s albums
have produced 18 singles (two #1’s, & eight in the Top 10) on the Billboard Hot
Country Songs charts.

32 Below brings a new age of country music to the
fans, and people love what they hear. With a musical
style all their own, 32 Below delivers true life songs for
the working class. With the release of its fourth album,
Stopping the Machine, 32 Below is crossing the genres
of country and rock. Playing 150-200 shows a year
Midwest and Southeast has helped the band move
over 15,000 albums to date.

Flynnville Train music draws on country, hard rock
and blues inspirations. Vocalist Brian Flynn and his
brother Brent (guitar) form the band’s core, which
also features Tim Beeler (bass), Tommy Bales (drums)
and Tombstone Slim (guitar).Encouraged early
in their career by Richard Young of the Kentucky
Headhunters, Toby Keith heard the band and signed
them to his Show Dog Record imprint. Their self-titled album debuted on
September 11, 2007, producing two singles on the US Billboard Hot Country
Songs charts, Last Good Time and Nowhere Than Somewhere.

CMT documented her rise to fame in Crystal: Living
the Dream, which aired in February 2008. Signed
to RCA Records in 2007, her debut single, You Can
Let Go, was released last year, charting in both her
native Canada and the USA. Her first album, Dawn
of a New Day, debuted at #2 on the Canadian
Country Albums chart, and #16 on the Billboard
Top Country Albums chart. It is the highest charted album by a full-blooded
Native American country artist in the Sound Scan era.

Waylon Albright “Shooter” Jennings is the only son
of country music legends Waylon Jennings and Jessi
Colter. Touring with his parents, he learned to play
drums, piano, and guitar and sat in with his dad’s
band. Living in L.A. as an adult, he fronted rock bands
(Guns N Roses as Axel Rose’s replacement). In 2005
Jennings debut album, Put the “O” Back in Country,
produced a hit on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts, Fourth of July. Other
albums include: Electric Rodeo, Live at Irving Plaza 4.18.06 (both 2006), and
The Wolf (2007). He has a two-year old daughter, Alabama Gypsy Rose, with
girlfriend Drea de Matteo (The Sopranos).

Three of country music’s favorite young artists join
forces for the “Honky Tonk Tailgate Party ‘09” tour.
Mark Wills, a multi-platinum selling country music star
with eight top 10 hits including Don’t Laugh At Me,
will be alongside Jeff Bates and Trent Willmon. Bates
has two critically acclaimed albums—Rainbow Man
in 2003 and Leave The Light On in 2006—plus seven hit singles including The
Love Song and Long, Slow Kisses. Willmon captured country music audiences
with songs like Beer Man and Dixie Rose Deluxe’s. Together, they might be one
of the highlights of the weekend.

Country duo Bomshel Buffy Lawson and Kristy O. are
like two sticks of dynamite. Together, their sound grabs
country music by its roots and jerks it into the 21st
Century. Lawson is one of Nashville’s most in-demand
demo singers and one of its riskiest songwriters.
Kristy is a stage-diving fiddler who makes her bow
sing sweet and mournful or shreds it with lightning
ferocity. Bomshel’s sound combines Nashville song craft, rock dynamics and
funk rhythms, all served up with a steel-magnolia spirit.

Eddie Montgomery and Troy Gentry’s journey into
the front ranks of American music has been one of
the most gratifying sagas of the past decade. Their
road to gold and platinum albums, CMA and ACM
awards, a Grammy nomination and highly successful
tours has been paved both with musical integrity and
with an abiding respect for the people and the genre
they represent. In their 10th year on the national stage, Montgomery Gentry’s
impressive legacy includes more than 20 charted singles (16 Top 20’s), with five
number ones, ACM Top New Vocal Duo or Group in 1999, CMA’s Duo of the Year
in 2000, and the American Music Award for Favorite New Artist the same year.
HE:D;O7JA?DI
Rodney Atkins journey to the top of charts began in
1997 when he with Curb Records. Atkins charted his
first single on the Billboard country charts that year (In
a Heartbeat). His next entry on the charts wasn’t until
late 2002, with the Top 40 single Sing Along. The fiveyear break could have de-railed his career, but Atkins
landed his first Top Five hit on the country music charts
in 2003, with the single Honesty (Write Me a List). He followed with seven more
singles, including five number ones (If You’re Going Through Hell, Watching You,
These Are My People, Cleaning This Gun and It’s America). His fourth record,
It’s America, was released in late 2008.

Jason Michael Carroll grew up in Raleigh, North
Carolina; his father, a very conservative minister who
viewed modern music as sinful, would not allow secular
music played in the home. In 2004, encouraged by his
mother, Carroll won a local singing competition. By the
summer of 2005, Carroll was a regular along Nashville’s
Music Row. He later signed a recording contract with
Arista Records. In 2006, his debut single Alyssa Lies, was released to radio,
entering the Top 10 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Songs charts. Carroll’s
debut album, Waitin’ in the Country, was released in 2007, and quickly
went gold behind the strength of Two Top 10 singles. His second album,
Growing Up is Getting Old, was released this past April.

Collin Raye debuted on the American country music
scene in 1991 with the release of his debut album All
I Can Be, the first of four consecutive albums to be
certified platinum in the U.S. Fourteen of his songs
went Top 10 between 1991-96; 23 of his singles have
reached the Top 10 overall. 2001’s Can’t Back Down
was his first album that did not produce a Top 40
country hit, and he did not record another studio album until 2005’s Twenty
Years and Change, which was released on an independent label. Four of
Raye’s singles have reached Number One on the Billboard country music
charts: Love, Me, In This Life, My Kind of Girl and I Can Still Feel You. Raye has
also recorded a total of 11 studio albums; his most recent album, Never Going
Back, will be released this year.

Often compared to The Eagles, Restless Heart has
become of country music’s most popular bands.
Throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, the band saw
considerable crossover success in both country music,
pop and adult contemporary formats. Together in
2009, the band will perform with its most popular
line-up - guitarist Greg Jennings, bassist Paul Gregg,
piano player Dave Innis, drummer John Dittrich and singer Larry Stewart. 26 of
their singles have entered the Billboard country charts, including six Number
One hits. The band’s greatest crossover hit was the single When She Cries, which
was released in 1992.

Journey returns to Walker for the third
time with new vocalist Arnel Pineda
making his MJ debut. The band
started in San Francisco in 1973, but
it took the addition of vocalist Steve
Perry’s golden voice in 1978 to move
the band from local phenomenon
to national treasure. Perry’s soaring
vocals and Neal Schon’s riveting guitar work made Journey one
of this country’s biggest concert attractions in the late 70’s and
early 80’s, and one of the world’s biggest melodic rock bands.
Jonathan Cain joined in 1980 and helped lift the songwriting to
new heights on Escape. Perry finally left after many stops and
starts when a hip injury sidelined him in 1996, right after the
band scored big with “When You Love a Woman,” from the
comeback album, Trial by Fire. Steve Augeri and now Pineda
have taken turns replacing Perry, and the “sound-alikes” have
kept the band in the spotlight ever since.

One of this generation’s most beloved
singer/songwriters, Crow will be making
her MJ debut at this year’s festival. She
hit it big right out of the gate, as her first
album, Tuesday Night Music Club, sold 7
million copies and yielded six hit singles.
Since then, Crow has continued that
success based on her tried-and-true
sound that mixes rock, pop, country and folk into a tasty stew
that continues to keep her audience happy. Noted for the
singles “All I Wanna Do,” “If It Makes You Happy,” “Everyday
is a Winding Road,” “Anything But Down,” “Light in Your Eyes”
and “Soak Up the Sun,” Crow and her ace back-up band are
a welcome addition to this year’s bill.

Festival favorite Kansas returns
to rock Walker after triumphant
shows at MJ 16 (2007) and 4 (1995).
Formed in 1973, the band released
three strong records, but it wasn’t
until 1977’s Leftoverture, that the
group hit the big time. The follow
up, Point of Know Return, was an
even bigger success, and the group toured and recorded
successfully for the rest of the 70’s. Kansas began to fall apart
in the early 1980s, however, when it became obvious to
vocalist Steve Walsh that the group was moving in a different
creative direction. The band struggled commercially with Walsh
replacement John Elafante, so Kansas took a two-year break to
re-group. Back together in 1986, the band toured successfully
with guitarist Steve Morse and has managed to stay together
in one form or another ever since. With the core of Walsh, Rich
Williams and Phil Ehart to anchor the band, Kansas continues
to endure as one of America’s greatest rock bands.
<E=>7J
Formed by three members of English
group Savoy Brown in 1971, the band
was considered one of the great live
bands of the 70’s. No band wanted to
have Foghat open for it, but everyone
enjoyed the lift in attendance that the
group’s presence brought to the bill.
The group’s fifth album, Fool for the
City, catapulted the band from the ranks of opening act to
headliner, and the band has been together ever since, with
drummer Roger Earl keeping various line-ups together through
times both good and bad. Sadly, original guitarist/vocalist
Dave Peverett and guitarist Rod Price have passed on, so this
version of the ‘Hat includes vocalist Charlie Huhn (Ted Nugent,
Victory), guitarist Bryan Bassett (Wild Cherry, Molly Hatchet) and
bassist Craig MacGregor, along with Earl, playing the band’s
traditional boogie and rock.

Just ask Jeb Wright, the founder of Classic Rock Revisited, about
Shooting Star. “Everyone has a story about the best band that
never made it as big as they should have. For me, that band
is Shooting Star. They have the songs, the musical talent, the
vocals and the live energy. Now, in 2009, the group is back
on the road proving their wares. No one who checks them
out will be disappointed.” With a back catalog that includes
“Last Chance,” “Tonight,” “Hang On For Your Life,” “Flesh and
Blood,” “Touch Me Tonight” and “Hollywood,” it’s criminal that
Shooting Star never made it big. This is your chance to see just
how good the band was-and still is.

For over three decades, Judas Priest
has epitomized the heavy metal
genre with its Harley riding front man,
two-guitar assault and spectacular
stage shows. Formed in Birmingham,
England in 1971, the group built its
following through steady live work and
a group of solid albums, culminating
with 1982’s classic, Screaming for Vengeance. In 1991, vocalist
Rob Halford left for a solo career, and the band went their
separate ways. The quintet re-grouped with singer Ripper Owens
in 1997, but failed to reach the same lofty heights that the original
band had with Halford. The vocalist, struggling with his own solo
career, returned to the fold in 2003, and the band has resumed
its spot at the top of the metal heap. The quintet has announced
that it will be performing its classic album British Steel (“Breaking
the Law” and “Living After Midnight” among the nine tracks on
that record) in its entirety during the 2009 summer tour.
B?J7<EH:
Lita Ford makes her MJ debut at
this year’s festival, continuing a
comeback that started with her
re-appearance on the rock scene
last year. The un-disputed queen of
rock and roll guitar, Ford first came
to our attention as a member of
the infamous Southern California girl
group The Runaways (which also included Joan Jett). After
that band’s split, Ford took a break from the scene, and then
re-emerged with a solo career that finally took off with the
release of her most commercially successful record Lita in 1988.
“Close My Eyes Forever,” the Top 10 hit duet she had with Ozzy
Osbourne, made her a commercial success, but she would
never reach those lofty heights again. After 1995’s Black record,
she took 12 years off to raise a family on a deserted island with
husband Jim Gillette (formerly the lead singer of Nitro). Ford
has played a handful of gigs during the last year, looking and
sounding great while playing all of her big songs.

David Coverdale and his wild bunch
return to Walker for the second time
to celebrate its new record, Good to
be Bad, a collection that celebrates
the band’s first new recorded output
in over 10 years. The band was
formed after Coverdale left Deep
Purple in 1977, and despite massive
success in Europe and Japan, didn’t make it big in the States
until the release of the Whitesnake album in 1987. That record
finally broke the Snake big stateside, selling more than eight
million copies and producing two huge singles, “Here I Go
Again” and “Is This Love.” The lanky singer has kept the band
together in one form or another ever since, despite a couple
of major breaks and a record with Jimmy Page. In 2002, the
band re-grouped again to celebrate its 25th anniversary, and
have toured off and on with guitarist Doug Aldrich and Reb
Beach front and center with Coverdale. Expect to hear all of
the band’s big hits and some new stuff at this year’s Jam.
The Spin Doctors were never your
typical, pretty boy hair band types
or snotty looking punk rockers, either.
These guys look like they climbed from
the wreckage of the Fillmore East,
and sounded like it as well. Paying
homage to the Grateful Dead and
the Allman Brothers as one of the
pioneers of the new jam band sound, the Spin Doctors went
on to sell eight million copies of its debut album, Pocket Full
of Kryptonite. The group’s second record sold only one-fourth
what the first one did, however, and by 1996 the first chapter in
the band’s history came to an acrimonious end. Brought back
together to close the historic Wetlands nightclub in New York
City in 2000, the quartet has since re-formed with the original
line-up, and continues to be a huge draw on the festival and
fair circuit. Expect to hear the band’s big hits, “Two Princes”
and “Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong,” during its MJ debut.

Yes returns with a different line-up
then the one that appeared here in
1998. With vocalist Jon Anderson on
the sidelines for this tour, Benoit David,
a singer from a Canadian-based Yes
tribute band, has stepped in, along
with keyboardist Oliver Wakeman, the
son of former keyboardist Rick. The
legendary core of guitarist Steve Howe, bassist Chris Squire and
drummer Alan White will be here as well, playing all the band’s
best songs, which blend symphonic and classical structures into
a mix that has held up as the template for progressive rock.
The group is best known for songs such as “Roundabout,” “Your
Move/All Good People,” “Owner of a Lonely Heart” and “Long
Distance Runaround,” some of the best tunes that this genre
can offer. Despite a great many lineup changes, occasional
splits within the group and the ever-changing trends in popular
music, the band has continued on for over 40 years and still
retains a large following.

If there was ever an 80’s super group,
it was Asia. Take guitarist Steve Howe
(doing double duty today; playing
with Yes as well, his first band), bassist/
vocalist John Wetton (with stints in King
Crimson, Roxy Music, Uriah Heep and
UK on his resume), keyboardist Geoff
Downes (formerly of The Buggles and
Yes) and drummer Carl Palmer (the “P” in Emerson, Lake and
Palmer), throw in nine melodic rock gems performed as only
these four giants could, and its no surprise that Asia’s debut
album went on to spend nine weeks at number one in the
U.S. and sell 10 million copies worldwide. Unfortunately, the
magic from album one failed to materialize on records two
and three, and Asia went into hiatus. Downes revived the band
with various line-ups over the years, but it wasn’t until the band
reformed with the original quartet in 2006 that it saw an up rise
in its fortunes once again. Expect all the hits and perhaps a
song from the King Crimson, The Buggles and ELP catalogs as
well during its set.

Despite the fact that front man Phil
Lynott died 23 years ago, this version
of Thin Lizzy is much more than a
tribute band. Guitarists John Sykes
(Whitesnake, Tygers of Pan Tang) and
Scott Gorham, who played together
on the final Lizzy studio album, Thunder
and Lightning, put this version of the
band together back in 1996 and have been going strong ever
since. The guitarists still play all of those great riffs and tandem
solos that are the blueprint for the Lizzy sound, and look absolutely
thrilled to be doing so. Joining these heavyweights are bassist
Francesco DiCosmo and drummer Tommy Aldridge (Black Oak
Arkansas, Pat Travers, Whitesnake, Ozzy Osbourne, Ted Nugent).
It’s a wonderful collection of musicians, but it takes more than
talent to pull off this type of show. Even though it would be
impossible for anyone to replicate the emotion and wordplay
that Lynott was famous for, Sykes does a good job singing these
great songs, on key, and showing great respect for the material,
which ranks as some of the best rock and roll (“Boys Are Back in
Town,” “Cowboy Song,” “Jailbreak”) ever written.

H7?BHE7:
The top selling American rock group
of the 70’s, Grand Funk stormed out
of Flint, Michigan in 1969. The band
was signed to Capitol after its free
per formance at the Atlanta Pop
Festival later that year, and one-year
later it headlined that same festival. The group sold-out a 1971
concert at New York’s Shea Stadium faster than the Beatles,
when Grand Funk was on top of the music world. The lights
dimmed a bit when original manager Terry Knight was fired in
1972, but the Todd Rundgren-produced We’re an American
Band put the group back on top in 1973. The band stuck around
long enough to release three more albums and a live collection,
but in 1976, tax problems and burnout sent the Railroad off the
track. It took over 20 years to get the original band back together,
and subsequent reunion tours in 1996-98 showed the group still
had staying power. Unfortunately, Farner’s Christian beliefs never
meshed with the others and he left again for good in 1999. This
version of the band has been touring steadily since 2001.

The ultimate all-girl tribute to AC/DC is a must-see experience,
as anyone who has witnessed the band at a MJ can attest.
This year, the girls graduate to the big stage for an opening set
on Saturday before returning to the Saloon for another night of
rocking, stomping boogie.
