Welcome
to
The Nature of Integrative Medicine
The Dr. ShowMore Calendar 2011
We want Full Dis-clothes-ure!
This calendar is an educational fundraising
endeavor from The Center for Integrative
Veterinary Care, an organization dedicated to
the education and outreach to both veterinary
professionals and the public, promoting current
information on Integrative Medicine.
This calendar represents the joyous
relationship between people and pets and
the special bond we as healthcare providers
share with animals and their loving human

responses when treating challenging cases. Best of all, our
patients welcome our therapies, happily running into our

of healthcare for our cherished animal friends is revealed
with each calendar page.
f
Because Integrative Medicine offers so many
options, and our patients come in all shapes
ERHWM^IWXVIEXQIRXWEVIXEMPSVIHMRHMZMHYEPP]
And just like our patients, no Integrative
Veterinarian’s physique is the same! The Dr. ShowMore
calendar is unveiling to the public the “New Gold Standard
of Care” along with a light-hearted glimpse at the “vet /
animal” bond! As we learn more about how the immune
system works, we take the best from both Conventional and
Holistic Medicine and treat the whole patient from head to
toes to paws to claws to hooves. With our mind, body and
soul we treat the whole animal. They care for us and we care
for them. These relationships are treasures.
f
This Calendar is ‘G’ rated for Gold Standard!
Dr. ShowMore....Dr. DoMore....Dr. SaveMore......
Come on, take a peek.......We hope you have as
much fun as we did creating this!
Integrative Veterinarians like to “keep
abreast” of cutting-edge-concepts
and modalities across the globe -consistently learning and sharing new
ideas. Continuing education classes and on-line forums
create a community of collaboration and information
for the best protocols and products, bringing forward
numerous choices for veterinarians and caregivers.
f
Final Dis-clothes-ure: Every model
photographed in this calendar is a
practicing veterinarian. From across the
globe, they enthusiastically posed for
this “take off” on the original 2003 movie “Calendar
Girls” lovingly promoting Integrative Veterinary Medicine.
This project will provide scholarships to train more
veterinarians in Integrative Modalities and help fund
the Dr. DoMore Film Project, which is umbrellaed by

HOLISTIC VETERINARY SERVICES OF INDIANA P.C. in NASHVILLE, INDIANA
From its formal beginning 250 years ago, our veterinary profession has expanded its
ability to care for millions of animals from countless species.
In the past thirty-five years, the acceptance of women as ‘equals’ has profoundly changed
the profession. Not only has medical knowledge expanded, but now veterinary medicine
is practiced with more compassion and appreciation of the special bond between human
and animal. It is only fitting and proper that a calendar is produced which exposes and
celebrates the progress in the medical care of the creatures with which we share our lives.
In 2011, the ‘whole world’ joins the veterinary profession in celebrating its 250th
anniversary! French veterinarian Claude Bourgelat founded the first veterinary school in
1761 in Lyon, France. The Alfort Veterinary School near Paris followed three years later.
Events will be held around the world throughout the coming year to commemorate this
special anniversary. The official opening ceremony will take place in Versailles,
France, January 24, 2011.
We welcome you to the “New Gold Standard” for the next 250 years...

Physical exams are an integral part of good
Integrative Veterinary care performed by
you at least monthly and yearly by your
veterinarian (more often for senior pets).

level of health.
Your veterinarian’s exam includes:
temperature, mucous membranes, tongue
(color, texture, size), eye evaluation, ear
exam, hair and skin condition, heart and
lung auscultation, abdominal palpation,and
pulse assessment as well as review of
the musculoskeletal structures. Lab tests,
radiographs or ultrasound may be indicated.
If treatment is required there are dozens
of possibilities. An Integrative Practitioner
looks at the whole physical body and
whole body of knowledge. They assess the
animal’s physical and mental issues drawing
on all resources from veterinary medical
training: anatomy, physiology, pathology,
parasitology, internal medicine, infectious
disease, and surgery. Additional choices
are Homeopathy, Chiropractic, Chinese
and Western Herbs, Acupuncture, Reiki,
QEWWEKIIWWIRXMEPSMPW¾S[IVIWWIRGIW%
wide range of energy medicine including
Rife, TTouch, Healing Touch for Animals,
Qi Gong/Tong Ren are all part of this
growing dimension of healing. Discussion
centered on improving nutrition and
digestion are crucial “building blocks”
allowing peak bodily response.
Animals should be examined yearly for
parasites both internal and external.
Options are available for natural and
chemical parasite control -- but chemical
and pesticide free help animals be healthier
while contributing to a “greener” planet.

Natural dental care begins with a good diet.
Natural foods help keep a pet’s immune
system at peak health by providing available
nutrients, vitamins and minerals. Raw bones
(especially raw chicken necks) and raw
foods keep dog and cat teeth naturally
clean: they are nature’s way of brushing and

hydrochloric acid content in their stomachs
and can safely digest the bone and meat.
Note: Observe the same hygiene used for
raw human meat and chicken. Be vigilant
handling any pet food. Safeguard young
children and toddlers who should never
play with bones or any pet food.

Some products have enzymes that help
break down the tartar. Apply the enzyme
to teeth at night; in the morning, give the
pet a raw bone to chew to help remove
the tarter.
Have your veterinarian
check your pet’s teeth
during their annual
wellness visit.

The patient’s symptoms, especially unique
ones, are matched to symptoms produced
by the remedies. When the correct match is
made, these energetic medicines cause the
individual to heal itself. Almost any problem
can be treated with Homeopathy - injuries,

importantly, homeopathy can be used when
the symptoms are too vague to treat with
conventional drugs.

Acupuncture
is a form of Chinese
medical treatment that
has been used for over
4,000 years in China
and has been used in
veterinary medicine in
the USA since 1972.
Based on a mapping of the body meridians
which follow the main organ systems the
“Yin and Yang” qualities are brought into
balance. Understanding of how the body’s
organs relate to reach other make Chinese
medicine a very effective and accepted
therapeutic option. While almost any
ailment can be improved, most common
treatments are for musculoskeletal issues,
kidney disease, liver disease, wound healing
or pain management.
Traditional Chinese Medicine has many
forms - needles (of different sizes
and lengths) aqua-puncture (injection
of Vitamin B12 or a Homeopathic
solutions), moxabustion (a heated herbal
application), gold bead implants, and
even electrostimulation. Use of Chinese

Pain management is often crucial after
surgery. Pharmaceutical drugs are
commonly prescribed but can have adverse
side effects. Acupuncture pre- and postoperatively and Homeopathic remedies like
Arnica and Hypericum offer pain relief and
are side affect free. Chiropractic adjustment
for skeletal alignment after anesthesia helps
animals recover more quickly. Physical
therapy can also be part of the post
operative recuperation giving the muscles,
tendons, and joints a chance to stretch
and repair.
Sadly, 46% of dogs and 39% of cats get
cancer. It has become epidemic.
Sadly, 46% of dogs and 39% of cats get
cancer and surgery is often one of the
treatments presented to owners. The
rise in the numbers of animals getting
cancer is overwhelming. When tumors or
masses become so large they cause pain
or bleeding the mass should be removed.
Many other cancer treatment protocols
can used in conjunction with surgical
removal or de-bulking. Each case is unique
and every situation requires an integrative
approach. Trying to prevent cancer from
occurring by working with the animal’s
immune system may be the future of
preventive care. Always discuss options
with your Integrative Veterinarian.
Surgical procedures are often necessary
during an animal’s life. Many veterinarians
perform the same procedures as do
our human counterparts. Surgeries run
the gamut from ovariohysterectomies
and castrations to major orthopedic
procedures to organ transplants.
Integrative Veterinarians are highly

There are several ways of correcting
orthopedic problems. Cruciate injuries can

Essential oils used in aromatherapy can
heal and nurture the mind, body, and
soul. These oils are the pure essence
of the plant and the oil heals as does
an herbal preparation. Essential oils
govern the plant’s immune system and
manage the plant’s life, decide whether
to mutate or migrate, how to survive in
a world of insects, funguses, viruses and
bacteria.. Used therapeutically, essential
oils with their complicated and synergistic
chemical compounds perform these same
functions in animals. Thus plants offer us
balance and a never-ending resource for
improving and embellishing our lives.

In ancient prehistory, anthropologists have
found evidence that early humans learned
which herbs to use and which herbs not
to use from their observations of animals
using herbs for their own healing processes.

In the wild, animals have an innate and
instinctual intelligence about which herbs
will help.
Herbs have complex ingredients and
multiple intricate modes of action. Including
herbal therapies in an Integrative Medical
treatment increases the effectiveness of
that program as herbs help balance and
nourish a patient. Many in-depth training
courses are available. Traditional Chinese
Medicine, Ayurvedic Medicine and Western
Herbal Medicine, taught to veterinarians by
other veterinarians and skilled herbalists,
give practicing colleagues clinical skills
allowing them to employ herbs as a
stand-alone treatment or concurrent with
pharmaceuticals.

COMMON HERBS FOR COMMON PROBLEMS
Although the use of many herbs is safe,
and it is generally safe to use these herbs
alongside of pharmaceutical medications,
a veterinarian who is trained in herbal
medicine will also be knowledge about
any problems that might occur with the
use of herbs and pharmaceuticals at the
same time.
Herbs can be administered to pets in
various ways. One can use fresh herbal
plants and simply mix them with their
meals. Herbs can also be dried and ground

capsules and given orally. Herbs can be
extracted with alcohol into a tincture and
that can be administered directly by mouth
or the alcohol extract can be mixed with
food or drink. Many animals don’t enjoy
the taste of alcohol, and there are ways
to dispel the alcohol to make it more
palatable. Herbal extracts also come in
glycerin which more easily taken.

The key to good health is good nutrition.
What humans and animals eat provides
their bodies with the building blocks they
need for strong immune systems. Seventy
percent of the immune system is in the
gastrointestinal tract. Diets providing highquality, minimally-processed foods allow
peak performance.Organic, fresh whole

can offer extra protection from cancer.
Certain carbohydrates in pet diets have
been associated with diabetes, cancer
and allergies. Many dogs have become
gluten sensitive as have their human
companions. Avoiding gluten grains like
wheat and barley can be helpful to gluten
sensitive animals. Quinoa, millet and
buckwheat are good substitutes. Balancing
the amount of carbohydrates and other
grains with proportionate amounts of
chopped and pureed vegetables (sweet
potatoes, zucchini, broccoli, butternut
squash, kale, spinach, sprouts, and carrots,
for example) will provide improved and
wholesome nutrition. Using proportionately
smaller amounts of fruits in season for

Increasing organic plant based foods
helps the environment and decreases
the number of animals used for pet food.
Sustainable farming practices also help
with ecology.

the diet are fed for a few weeks. These
diets provide micronutrients, antioxidants,
and unadulterated enzymes to improve
vitality. Giving organic foods free of
pesticides and hazardous residues is also
very important.
Commercially-manufactured pet diets
are processed at high temperatures
and pressures destroying many delicate
nutrients while altering the molecular
structure of the food. Commercial pet food
ingredients often are themselves processed
before they are further processed in
the manufacturing end product. They
may contain pesticide residues or toxins.
Question your sources of information
about pet foods and look at consumer
research publications like the Whole
Dog Journal for updated evaluations of
commercially available dog foods.
Calcium can be supplemented in these

bones can become brittle and have sharp
edges that do not digest as easily as
raw bones. Grinding the bones up into

Ozone therapy increases oxygen helping
heal the body. Hyperbaric oxygen
chambers may be used to increase oxygen

converted to oxygen in the cells shifting the
chemical reactions back toward healing.

Chiropractic as a professional medical
therapy was developed in the late 1800s.
Spinal manipulation has been around
since ancient times. Its use in animals
in the US came into its own in the late
1980’s. The adaptation of the principles of
chiropractic to animals began and continues
as a collaborative effort between Doctors
of Chiropractic (practitioners who are
licensed to treat people) and Doctors of
Veterinary Medicine.
Animal chiropractic, or veterinary spinal
manipulation, focuses on correcting both
functional and structural dysfunction in
WTIGM½GTEVXWSJXLIWTMRISVXLINSMRXW
of extremities. Chiropractic techniques
improve movement, joint nutrition, and
neurologic function. Nerves leave the
spine at the spaces between vertebrae
allowing for communication between
individual organs, glands and muscles
with the brain and all other parts of the
body. Studies in human chiropractic
have documented the improvement of
a wide variety of conditions after spinal
manipulation. Some examples include:
heart rhythm disturbances, intestinal
motility problems, bladder function,
numbness and pain in the limbs.

Association or completed training by
the Healing Oasis School of Spinal
Manipulative Therapy are the two leading
forms of training.
There are various methods that may be
used to adjust animals. It can be done
manually with the hands or with a hand
held adjusting instrument. One may also
use Applied Kinesiology (AK) to locate
areas needing alignment.
Massage and Rehabilitation techniques
can facilitate the ongoing healing of the
corrected spine.

Integrative Veterinary Medicine is hard
to describe. The animal’s whole being
must be considered, including their mind
and emotion as well as their body, taking
into consideration lifestyle and nutrition.
Ninety percent of the time I use
Homeopathy, rather than conventional
drugs. In addition, I utilize radiographs,
lab tests, and surgery, along with holistic
modalities such as chiropractic, massage,
class 4 laser, herbs and nutritional
supplements (nutriceuticals). I also
change diets to ecologically-appropriate
foodstuffs.

Because rabies is deadly to humans as well
as pets, U.S.laws require that pets must
be vaccinated with the rabies vaccine
Regrettably, some animals with impaired
health may not respond to vaccination.
A rabies antibody titer test can assess if
at-risk pets have responded and determine
the level of protection. The titer test is
particularly useful for a pet who is too ill
for vaccination, although most areas won’t
accept the test as legal proof of protection.
Again, an Integrative Veterinarian can
evaluate local regulations regarding medical
exemptions for health reasons.
This beautiful dog Wailea was a victim of a reaction to her second
rabies vaccination. She died after the vaccine caused a massive
immune reaction that destroyed her liver and head muscles. Her
picture reminds us that we should never take anything we do to
our animals for granted and that there is still much to learn about
animal systems and veterinary medicine. Any of us who work
with animals should always be vigilant and always be seeking the
answers to the why’s and how’s of disease AND health.
4
We veterinarians want to protect our
patients from contagious diseases, and
vaccination has long been a standard part
of the annual visit for our pets. But once an
animal has developed blood antibodies to
life-threatening diseases, further vaccination
is often unnecessary,
A simple blood test called a titer test can
detect if antibodies protect the pet. If the
antibody titers drop over time, some
veterinarians consider re-vaccinating if the
animal is young enough and healthy. Other
veterinarians believe that once antibodies
have formed, the animal is likely protected
for life. All risk factors should be evaluated
by the veterinarian for each individual
animal.
Re-vaccinating an animal with strong titers
HSIWRSXMRGVIEWIMQQYRMX]*YVXLIVQSVI
it may cause an adverse reaction in an
animal with cancer, autoimmune diseases,
or another chronic health problem. Vaccine
product inserts state, “Give to healthy
animals only”, but because there is no
HI½RMXMSRSJ±LIEPXL]²XLMW[EVRMRKMWSJXIR
ignored. Also, multiple vaccines
given in a short period of time are
known to increase the chance of negative
VIEGXMSRW*YVXLIVQSVIWSGEPPIH±GSQFS²
shots make it impossible to detect which
vaccine caused the reaction so it can be
avoided in the future.
Integrative Veterinarians frequently identify
reactions to inoculations weeks or months
after vaccination. Because cancers are
sometimes found at injection sites or along
the acupuncture meridians running through
the site, veterinarians must consider the
safety of particular vaccines and choose
injection areas which make surgical removal
of a potential cancer easier. Of course,
it would be safer to avoid unnecessary
ZEGGMREXMSRWMRXLI½VWXTPEGI
Many Integrative Veterinarians do routine
titer testing to evaluate protection against
the most important canine diseases:
parvovirus, distemper, and rabies. They
may also give Homeopathic remedies –
like Thuja or Silicea or Ledum -- before,
during and after vaccination to lessen a
vaccine’s ill effects. Homeopathic Lyssin
may be administered for rabies vaccination.
Some practitioners offer protocols using
Homeopathic Nosodes for the diseases.
Cats can be titered for panleukopenia
and rabies . Horses can also be titered for
several diseases. Always discuss potential
vaccination needs with your Integrative
Veterinarian at your pet’s annual wellness
exam. Before giving your consent, make
certain you are completely informed about
the need for a particular vaccine, duration
of immunity, and potential adverse
reactions.
