The museum was built to promote world peace. The horror of atomic
bombs is revealed in materials conveying the pre and post atomic bomb
history of Hiroshima in easy-to-understand displays using photographic
and video footage. Tourists from all over the world come to visit the
museum.
Hiroshima Castle was built by military commander
Mōri Terumoto in 1589. Since then the government,
economy and culture of Hiroshima have developed
around the castle. Sometimes called Carp Castle, the
castle is said to be the origin of the name of the
Hiroshima Toyo Carp baseball team. The castle tower
was destroyed when the atomic bomb was dropped,
and rebuilt in 1958.

all over the Peace Memorial Park. In Japan
there is a custom of folding 1,000 paper
cranes out of colored pieces of square paper

In Hiroshima people fold the cranes wishing

Hiroshima traditional culture:
Kagura Shinto theatrical dance
Kagura refers to singing and dancing to summon the Shinto
spirits. Hiroshima is one of the foremost places for Kagura in
Japan, top class in both quality and number of performances.
The increasing opportunities for watching performances in
Hiroshima City are enthralling great numbers of audiences.

Memorial Cathedral
for World Peace
This Cathedral was built in 1954 as
a memorial for the victims of the
atomic bomb and as a place of
prayer for world peace. It was
designated as an Important
Cultural Propery of Japan in 2006.
Additionally, the Peace Memorial
Park contains Monument in
Memory of the Korean Victims of
the A-bomb. This is another place
where people pray for world peace.
What are the people
of Hiroshima like?
The most popular sports in Japan are pro baseball and pro
soccer. Hiroshima is home to pro baseball team“Hiroshima
Toyo Carp,”based in the MAZDA Zoom-Zoom Stadium
Hiroshima which is modeled after American Major League
Baseball stadiums, and pro soccer team“Sanfrecce
Hiroshima,”the 2012 champions of the J.League which is the
top pro soccer league in Japan. During the sports season
Hiroshima comes alive with fans from children to adults. On
top of this Hiroshima is home to Hiroshima Symphony
Orchestra, the only permanent professional orchestra in the
Shikoku and Chugoku districts. As an International City of
Peace and Culture, Hiroshima Symphony Orchestra performs
to send a message of peace to the world.
Striving to restore a city after World War 2 which experienced catastrophic
destruction, this professional baseball team was formed in 1950. At times
of financial difficulty, to avert closure the team has received large
donations from the citizens of Hiroshima. Hiroshima Toyo Carp is the only
professional baseball team in Japan with this style of citizen-supported
management.
Built close to the area where the bomb exploded, the Hiroshima
Peace Memorial Park contains the Cenotaph for A-bomb Victims. The
Cenotaph is the resting place for the souls of those that perished due
to the atomic bomb and a
place to pray for peace.
The epitaph“Let all the
souls here rest in peace
for we shall not repeat
the evil”is inscribed on
the Cenotaph, which
holds a register in a
centrally located stone
chamber for all the
victims of the atomic
bomb both inside and
outside Japan.
The A-bomb Dome stands along the side of the park.

recommend trying and comparing a few. While

The key to Hiroshima
Okonomiyaki is
"Niku-tama-soba"
First of all you want to order the“Niku-tama-soba,”
which includes pork, egg and fried soba noodles. The
taste of a restaurant can be gauged by the
“Niku-tama-soba”as this is a standard menu item.
People that cannot eat pork or eggs can ask for them
to be left out.

A characteristic of the sauce used
for okonomiyaki in Hiroshima is its
strong sweetness and thickness. The
sauce is a good match for
Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki and its
many ingredients, such as cabbage.
How to eat
Okonomiyaki like an
Okonomiyaki restaurants in Hiroshima use a utensil
called a hera. As the okonomiyaki comes in the
shape of a disc with a diameter of approximately
20cm, the hera is used to cut and divide it into easy
to eat portions. After cutting the okonomiyaki into
bite-size pieces, locals often use the hera to eat the
okonomiyaki straight off the hot plate without using
a plate or chopsticks. This might be

Many of the okonomiyaki
restaurant names in Hiroshima
are women s names. This is
because the war widow shop
owners who gave their all and
operated the okonomiyaki
restaurants by themselves were
affectionately called by their first
names which subsequently
became the names of their
restaurants. The restaurant
names are carried on even
through ensuing changes in

popular with children.

There are many other ways
to eat oysters. In“Oyster

seasoning, is rubbed onto the
sides of the pot before
oysters, tofu, vegetables and
other ingredients are
simmered. This is a unique
dish in which you can
dissolve the miso little by
little to adjust the flavor to
your preferences! Another
popular classic oyster dish is
“Oyster Meshi.”Rice is
cooked from water used to
boil oysters which are then
placed on the rice and
steamed. Why not give these

Dipping noodles are eaten by dipping cold
noodles and generous amounts of vegetables in
the dipping sauce. This sauce is a hot and spicy
soy-based sauce containing chili and other spices.
It is standard for noodles to be covered in spring

A sesame flavored noodle dish topped with mince

ingredients well. Adding a soft-boiled on-tama egg
