November 2013 Senior Beat
A free monthly newsletter of the Tri-Lakes HAP Senior Citizens Program November 2013 Community Offers Thanksgiving Dinner “I don’t want anyone to miss a traditional Thanksgiving Dinner this year!” That’s how AB Tellez, owner of Rosie’s Diner in Monument first explained his motivation for repeating this year his 2010 offering of a free Thanksgiving dinner at Rosie’s Diner. “This is not a ‘Rosie’s event,” he insisted. “This is something the community does because it cares about the people in the community.” With those comments, AB joined hands with Tri-Lakes Health Advocacy Partnership in early September to start planning 2013 Community Coming Together. Many businesses immediately stepped forward with offerings of financial support, and food donations. Many service groups, nonprofits, churches and individual volunteers have offered their assistance in a variety of ways to ensure this event is a success. Municipalities are also giving support. The original 2010 event was aimed toward supporting senior citizens. This year it is much more about supporting the entire spectrum of community citizens. Anyone who resides in the Tri-Lakes and Black Forest area, and who does not have family present with whom to share their Thanksgiving meal, or for any reason will not be able to have a traditional Thanksgiving dinner on Thanksgiving Day, is welcome to participate in this free meal. Also, for those first responders who are on duty this Thanksgiving Day, they too are invited to come and enjoy the free meal while on duty, as a small gesture of “thanks” for all they do to keep our community safe and secure throughout the year. The free traditional Thanksgiving dinner will be at Rosie’s Diner, 411 Highway 105 in Monument, on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 28. Rosie’s www.TriLakesSeniors.org is only open for limited hours on this day, and only to support this event. The dinner will be served in two seatings—one at 11:30 AM and a second at 1 PM—to reduce waiting time for the diners. The meal is turkey with all the trimmings, followed by pumpkin pie for dessert. Anyone who would like to enjoy this free Thanksgiving meal need only call and make a reservation. To make a reservation for the meal, please call the Town of Monument at 719 884-8013. Seating space is limited and therefore reservations should be made as early as possible; the last day reservations will be accepted is Friday, November 15. Service groups, businesses, and others who would like to participate or contribute in some way toward the success of Community Coming together are encouraged to call TriLakes Health Advocacy Partnership at 719 484-6873. More information about Community Coming Together is available in the Internet at www.TriLakesHAP.org/CCT. Blood Pressure Checkup Weekly blood pressure checks are available every Thursday, 11:30 AM at the Tri-Lakes/ Monument Fire Department Administration Building (166 Second Street) just prior to the noon Senior Luncheon. Blood pressure screening by a registered nurse is also available the last Tuesday of each month at the YMCA from 8 to 10 AM, and at noon on the first and third Wednesday of each month at the Senior Luncheon at “Big Red” (146 Jefferson Street, Monument). 1 November 2013 Re-register for E9-1-1 The Emergency Notification System—sometimes called, “Reverse 911”—is used by authorized emergency services personnel to make rapid telephone, text, email, and TTY/TDD notifications to a specific geographic area. It is used to alert registered users of emergency situations that pose a threat to life or property, or situations deemed dangerous by public officials. Situations may include, but are not limited to, man-made disasters, hazardous materials incidents, missing persons, crime, and neighborhood/business evacuation notifications. The El Paso-Teller County E9-1-1 Authority updated their system as a result of lessons learned from the 2012 Waldo Canyon Fire. That system sent out all notifications at one time, resulting in overloading of the communications network. The new system staggers notifications, sending out a limited number of simultaneous notices sequentially, thus maintaining the integrity of the communications network. If you registered your information prior to the Black Forest Fire (June 2013), you should create a new account and re-register. All contact information collected from the previous system was imported into the new system. Creating a new account will allow you to manage and update your information if your address or contact information changes. The new system also allows you to register multiple locations (home, family member’s home, multiple work locations, etc.) and up to nine contact paths per account—two email, two phone lines, two text messages, and one TTY/TDD device). In order to register for this service you must be a resident of either El Paso or Teller County. It is recommended that each user register as an individual rather than as a household to ensure all individuals within the household are notified. Spokesman Ben Bills requests, “When you receive one of these messages, please confirm that you did. We want to make sure that reporting is consistent and it’s working efficiently.” Source: www.elpasoteller911.org and the August 16, 2013 Gazette, Section B, pages 1 and 2. 2 Tri-Lakes HAP Senior Beat Tri-Lakes Center For The Arts Presents Singer/Songwriter Series 304 Highway 105, Palmer Lake; Ph 719 481-0475 For tickets, contact Tri-Lakes Center for the Arts or visit www.TriLakesArts.org Sean Waldron Wednesday Nov 7; 6-8 PM $10 members; $12 non-members Engaging and entertaining, Sean Waldron has a stage presence packed with soul and energy that demands attention. Thursday, November 21; 7 PM Palmer Lake Town Hall, 28 Valley Crescent; Palmer Lake Dwight Haverkorn, retired Colorado Springs Police Detective, returns with details of a “cold case” involving the killing of Colorado Springs Police Department Officer Richard Stanley Burchfield on Thanksgiving Day, November 26, 1953. Officer Burchfield was on duty that day when he made contact with a person that had been responsible for a string of personal robberies. Burchfield was shot nine times with a .22-caliber Colt semi-automatic pistol. To this day, the file has continued to be carried as an open homicide investigation. Dwight has conducted extensive research on unsolved crimes in Colorado Springs, some dating back over a century. In a previous presentation to the Historical Society, Dwight shared an interesting theory developed from his research about a string of axe murders committed in Colorado Springs in the early 1900s. It has been sixty years since Officer Burchfield was gunned down. Has Dwight found more to this story? This event is free and refreshments will be served after the presentation. www.PalmerDivideHistory.org HAP is looking for a volunteer interested in producing this monthly Senior Beat newsletter.
