A note from your co-presidents As we end another successful school year, we want to extend our appreciation for all that our parents have done this school year for our students and staff! Thanks for taking the time to be involved at Northstar, Everything, from volunteering; attending parent teacher conferences; attending PTSA meetings; fundraising, communicating with teachers and other staff; staying informed by reading newsletters, announcements, Skyward, and emails from school; demonstrating to your students the importance of education; participating in surveys, sharing your opinions; and so on. We surpassed our projected fundraising budget this year. This would not be possible without the support of many, many parents. The success of our school depends on everyone involved in our children’s lives! It takes the work and support of everyone! Our partnership with the Locust Lane Northstar Family Fun Run was in its first year and was very successful. We provided families with an opportunity to participate in a fun healthy event and at the same time, raise money for our programs, raising $680.00. Thanks to all, including student council members, who volunteered your time to make this event successful and thanks to everyone who attended. We already have plans underway for next year! Thanks to everyone who participated with our restaurant fundraiser evenings at Burracho’s and Chipotle, helping us raise $510.24 for our school! This is a very easy way to participate in fundraising. By just purchasing dinner, you help us raise funds through the generosity of these businesses. Watch for more opportunities next year. A big thank you to our Northstar PTSA Executive Board! Thank you for your leadership this year and for the many hours of organizing and leading events. We also appreciate the time that our PAC, teacher, and student representatives have given to successfully support our PTSA. We want to recognize our outgoing committee members including Theresa Curtis, Carol Hebert, Janet Tolan, Jodi Kent, Jamie Ackerman, Bridget Kajer, and Liz Poteete. We extend our thanks to our teacher representatives including Mrs. Katie Geddes (Grade 6), Mrs. Brenda Xiong (Grade 7) and Mrs. Mary Rettke (Grade 8); and our student representatives from Northstar Student Council including Anna Kent, Allie Brummond, and Karissa Ackerman. We appreciate the time you take out of your schedules to add a greater dimension to our PTSA. Thank you to Northstar Parent Advisory Council representatives for giving Northstar a voice on the council and providing PAC updates at our PTSA meetings, including Done Fink and Peggy Halvorson. Lastly, congratulations to our 8th Graders! Good luck to you all next year as you enter high school. We extend our best wishes for your success in the years to come! The PTSA sponsored the picnic on the 8th Grade C&ebration Day, June 9, and many 7th grade families generously donated food or money used towards food purchases. Once again, thank you for all that you do to help make Northstar a great school and for making a difference in the lives of children! We look forward to seeing you in the fall! Watch for our PTSA summer newsletter arriving in August. Wendy Oberg & Becky Van Es Co- Presidents 3 Concessions Committee The concessions committee had another successful year with profits of close to $2,306.37. This amount is $1,106.37 over our anticipated earnings of $1,200. In addition to our after school concessions, Northstar hosted a Forensics Meet concession in February. The Forensics Meet concession is held after school in the multipurpose room. Our first shift came to help set up and serve. The second shift served and then helped clean up. We served approximately 450 students. Our Northstar families, students, and those who visit from other schools really help make our concessions successful and appreciate that they are available. Thank you to all the concessions committee members who participated this year and are key to success, including Jodi Kent, Amy Haselwander, Jill Marie Kelly, Theresa Curtis, Jamie Ackerman, Carol Hehert, Diane Provos, Maria Roberts, Stacey Schemmel, Tracy Feck, and Denise Bernier. Discount Card Fund raiser This was our 17th year to offer the Northstar Discount Card. A big thanks to everyone who supported our fundraising event Our goal this year was to raise $4,500.00 for all the wonderful programs that we support at Northstar to enhance student learning. We raised $4,428.10 and look forward to surpassing that amount in 2015-2016! Thanks to the hard work of all of our students who participated in our fundraiser! Congratulations to the top selling students, including Jenny LaPage, who finished in first place and Alex Hagman finishing in second place. Jenny won $50 and Alex won $25 cash! Mr. Brown’s resource class won the competition for selling the most cards and earned the pizza party. We are very grateful to our participating businesses: The Coffee Grounds, Brent Douglas Floral, Burracho’s, Dairy Queen, Gordy’s County Market, Green Mill Restaurant, Mancino’s Restaurant, Markquart Lube n’ Wash, Pizza Del Re, Taco John’s, TGI Friday’s, Sports Clips, Action City, Ship Shape Car Wash, Great Harvest, Play It Again Sports, Above and Beyond, Cherry Berry, Chippewa Valley Sporting Goods, Delivery Fix, Eau Claire Ace Hardware, Fantastic Sam’s, Kwik Trip, Mom’s Kitchen, The Salon Professional Hair Academy, and the Eau Claire YMCA. Again, thanks to everyone who participated in our Discount Card Fundraising Program this year. Our Discount Card offers a wide variety of businesses and still costs only $10, saving you lots of money. Please plan to purchase one and support our fund raising efforts in 2015-2016! Maria Roberts Jennifer Dalhoe SCRIP We tried 4 different things with Scrip this year: First, we purchased gas and grocery cards to sell at Back-to-School Night. This was very successful as we sold out of all of our cards! Those who purchased cards were already familiar with the Scrip program and looking for our table. Secondly, we tried to do the same thing at both Fall and Spring conferences, This was not as successful. We do not feel that it was worth the time or energy to do this again. The third thing that we tried this year, was that we ran a holiday Scrip program which was a huge success. One of the great things 4 about this program this year, was that we were able to give people the opportunity to purchase cards for the Giving Tree directly from Scrip, benefiting Northstar in more ways than one; people loved the ease with which they were able to contribute to the Giving Tree and Northstar PTSA received a rebate from this activity as well. Lastly, we also ran an end-of-the-year Scrip order. This was not as successful in that we only had a few people order. However, those orders were ‘smart’ orders ($400 in gas for a $40 profit to Northstar) and the money earned was well worth the few hours it took to advertise and complete the order. The North High Grad Party Committee also chose to order some of their gift cards from us, which was a large portion of our profit. We were pleased to have this partnership. Over the course of the year, we were able to raise more than we originally planned for, which is wonderful. We are still trying to figure out the best way to publicize the program and increase awareness and understanding, but feel that it is worth continuing with the program next year. One idea that we are discussing is to have a monthly gas card order that we simply advertise to staff and manage through e mail. (All of our spring orders were from staff anyway!) We look forward to exploring new ways to make this simple fundraiser more effective! Done Fink Liz Poteete Membership Total Northstar PTSA membership for the 2014-2015 school year was 72 members. Our membership numbers have continued to decline in the past couple years. Despite a rather small membership we have remained financially strong, in large part due to the involvement and commitment of our executive board and all parents. Respectfully, Janelle Martin and Jennifer Warren Your Membership Co-Chairpersons Staff and Bus Driver Appreciation Week Northstar PTSA celebrated National Teacher Appreciation Week May 4-8. This special week honored ALL Northstar staff who lend their time and talents to educating our children and making Northstar a great place to learn. Northstar Middle School’s events are part of a national effort to call attention to the outstanding contributions teachers and all our staff make to individuals and communities. PTSA also recognized the bus drivers for all of their hard work, patience and commitment to our children. The week included a snack mix in staff mailboxes on Monday; donuts on Tuesday; another mailbox surprise on Wednesday; a luncheon with wonderful desserts on Thursday; and Dilly Bars from Dairy Queen on Friday. All of the goodies came with precious puns. Even the luncheon had a punny story included this year! Thanks to the Staff Appreciation Committee for all of their great ideas. Also for all of their hard work and planning to make this week run smoothly: Becky Van Es, Jamb Ackerman, Jennifer Plante, Jenny Oxley, Carrie Burnett, Jacqueline Timp, and Jennifer Malewicki We had extra help for the luncheon. These people either donated time or treats to make lunch a success: Renae Pierce, Melissa Lokken, Kristina Gunderson, Deb Hower, Michelle Swenson, Vickie Mousel, Jennifer Thompson, Jamie Ackerman, and Jen Plante. Thanks ladies! Lastly, many businesses or individuals were very generous in making donations for the 5 door prize drawings at the luncheon and with donations of food or treats. They include Pinehurst Dairy Queen, Kwik Trip, Gordy’s County Market, Jennifer Malewicki, Carrie Burnett, Jen and Jason Plante, Deb Matthews, and Brent Douglas Floral. Sincerely, Jennifer Malewicki Gordy’s County Market 1% Cash Back Program Gordy’s County Market runs the Hometown giving 1% cash back to Pride Program schools that turn in Gordy’s receipts. Receipts must be no older than 6 months old, not contain alcohol, gas, tobacco or postage purchases and are dropped off at Gordy’s 3 times yearly. As chairperson, I separate receipts by store location, add the total of each receipt minus tax and excluding alcohol, cigarette, tobacco, gas, postage and service counter purchases. I then bundle the receipts by store with a tape total for each bundle and turn them in to the Gordy’s service counter. A check is then mailed to the school. Northstar received $220.24 from your receipts. — In February, Gordy’s ended this program but we appreciate their support over the years and they will continue participating with our Scrip Program. Heather Bauer Health Chairperson Vision Screening was held this fall for all 7th graders. The school nurse sets the date for the screening held at the school and is present at the screening. She provides a brief orientation to the equipment and explanation about the screening process to parent volunteers. The screening this year was held in the multi-purpose room during the lunch period on October 21. As chairperson, I call and email to recruit volunteers, consulting a signup sheet from the PTSA for names. Generally nine volunteers, including the chairperson, are needed. Volunteers are assigned to the four screening stations in pairs. The ninth volunteer directs students, who come in groups of 20-25, to the predetermined stations. When all the students have been tested, volunteers provide assistance with clean up and putting away of the equipment. Diane Provos Northstar PTSA Backpack Program Through this program we provide our financially disadvantaged students with the necessary school supplies and materials to help them get and maintain a good start in school and throughout the school year as needed. The majority of funding is through the PTSA and other personal donations are also given by individuals. We gladly accept any monetary donations or school supply donations of any kind. Eighth Grade Celebration Picnic The Eighth Grade Celebration Picnic Committee holds an outdoor picnic lunch for our 8th grade students during their celebration. This year the 8th Grade Celebration was held on June 9th. We served grilled hotdogs and hamburgers; as well as chips, cookies, water melon, Icees and bottled water. Our seventh grade parents help make this a successful event by making a monetary donation or by donating cookies or watermelon. Thank you to all the parents who made many donations! The picnic lunch is served outside by the outdoor classroom. 6 In addition to the committee members we have the help of our extra volunteers and we always appreciated this for set up, serving and clean up. Thank you to the following parents on the committee and volunteers who made this a great day for our 8th graders: Colleen Ericson, Kristina Gunderson, Bridget Kajer, Russ Tate, Carrie Burnett, Travis Burnett, Deb Hower, Phyllis Voelker, Janelle Martin, Jamie Ackerman, Teresa Olson, Michelle Swenson and Karen Schreiter. Parent Volunteer Coordinators Thank you to all the people who have volunteered this past year at Northstar! You truly have enriched our student’s experience at Northstar by providing a willing resource to give of your time. We have moms, dads, sisters, brothers and grandparents who have helped at various events throughout the course of the year. Generally, we call and confirm our volunteer lists, but this year we received numerous emails for requests to volunteer at events advertised in the Northstar News & Announcements, demonstrating another way that communication at Northstar is evolving. Following is are examples of events that were more successful because of YOU: Vision Screenings Serving Refreshments at Concerts Polar Parties Mile Run 6th Grade Track Meet Join Hands Day Forensics Meet Staff Appreciation Thank you for all you do! Liz Mayo Jacqueline Temp Janet Tolan Boxtops4Education We had another great year collecting box tops! We reached our goal of earning $1,000 for the 2014-2015 school year with a total of $2,202 collected. Mrs. Tray’s Resource won the Boxtops competition by turning in a total of 1,517 for the year. Nice job! Thank you to ALL Resources who participated in this year’s competition and surpassing our goal! Thank you to Mrs. Devine’s Resource students for collecting Box tops from all the Resource classrooms this year. This program would not be possible without your support. Have a great summer and remember to keep clipping, shopping, and saving box tops for education! Thanks again for all your efforts. Amy Haselwander th Grade Annual Report: 6 Camp Middle School opened up the 20142015 Northstar school year in late August. The two morning sessions have continued to be a valued experience for the incoming sixth graders’ transition to middle school. Having the opportunity to open hall lockers and move through each student’s class schedule helped eased the “first day jitters.” The generosity of the PTSA has funded buses and educational activities out in the community that benefited a great number of 6th graders. Our Northstar PTSA provided food for Parent-Teacher conferences in October and February. This special treat is always enjoyed and greatly appreciated. 6th grade physical education students once again appreciated the help, support, and re fueling available for the mile run days in October and May. The drinks and fruit 7 provide a needed snack and send a good message about exercise and nutrition. Terrie Henke received a $25 gift card from PTSA for her ldita rod presentation to the 6th graders in February. Following this dogsled race has become a favorite activity to break up the long winter days. Thanks to a PTSA mini grant, all staff and students at Northstar had access to the lditarod Insider. Using their personal iPads, students were able to GPS track mushers along the thousand mile route in real time. English language arts, math, science, and social studies activities enriched students’ learning of 6th grade curriculum. On May 15th the sixth graders worked hard at YMCA Camp Manitiou during Join Hands Day for our service learning project. The students and staff donated over 400 hours of labor cleaning and raking. PTSA funds paid for the bus transportation to and from camp. The annual 6th grade track meet on June 5th was a fun, lightly competitive way to end the year. PTSA again provide ribbons for the top 6-8 places for each event and a participation ribbon for each sixth grader. The 6th grade staff would like to thank the PTSA for all of the volunteer hours and monetary funding of projects that make our students’ school experiences so much richer. We feel fortunate to work with such a supportive and involved PTSA. Respectfully submitted June 8, 2015, Katie Geddes 6 —8 Special Education Teacher th 6 Grade Teacher Representative Annual Report: Grade 7 The 7th grade students and teachers had a very busy year filled with learning activities both in and out of the classroom. Through social studies this spring students worked on “—isms” projects in which a few of the art pieces have been displayed as ceiling tiles in Ms. CarlsonSather’s classroom. Students attended a Shakespeare speaker and some students attended the Shakespeare Festival. The entire grade level attended the play “Walk Two Moons.” In May all students attend Career Venture to introduce them to different career opportunities and we participated in Join Hands Day which involved helping others in our community. We ended our year together by going to Action City on the last day of school. We would like to thank the PTSA for their financial support throughout the year. Through mini grants we were able to purchase team awards, classroom supplies and incentives, snacks for the Join Hands Day group, provide gift certificates to class speakers, and defray the student cost to attend the end of the year trip. We greatly appreciate PTSA’s commitment to our students. Brenda Xiong 7th grade teacher representative Annual Report: Grade 8 We would like to thank the PTSA for everything that they have done for our 8th graders this year. We attended The Christmas Carol at The Guthrie and had a wonderful time with our kids. The experience at this well produced theater allows the students to visually see the book they read in English class and helps lengthen discussions in those classes. Another highlight of our year was our Join Hands Day adventure at Lake Altoona. PISA gave a grant so that the staff was able to provide a hotdog meal to the kids before they cleaned and raked the park. It is always amazing how many hotdogs some of those boys can eat! The kids worked hard 8 and earned a candy treat for all their efforts. Thank you to the PTSA for helping fund both these great adventures. The teachers would also like to recognize all the great meals that PTSA has provided to us this year. We look forward to these meals like the gold at the end of a rainbow. Thank you for supporting us all year long. We have a wonderful school and wonderful parents and would want to teach nowhere else. Respectfully submitted by Mary Rettke 8th Grade PTSA Representative Northstar Student Council Summary Student Council met 10 times throughout the year to plan and prepare many exciting activities. Our membership, as always was open to all students. While many students attended monthly meetings others pitched in on other specific projects. It is our goal to develop future leaders, provide student involvement opportunities, and to be role models for the students of Northstar. During the 2014-15 school year, student council donated in excess of $2,000.00 to area charities, facilitated numerous fundraising activities, and sponsored many school spirit events. Our 2014-15 highlights include: Quarterly Polar Parties—proceeds to St Francis and Feed My People food banks Annual Mix it Up Day—develop new friendships Annual Breast Cancer Awareness week— proceeds to HERS Breast Center at Mayo Hospital Annual Holiday Giving Tree—assisted in financial contribution 14th Annual Pennies for Patients-The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Wisconsin Staff Appreciation Promoting school spirit through spirit days and offering school clothing to purchase Partnered with Northstar RCU In addition, student council members volunteered their time during many evening activities including Camp Middle School, Back to School Night, and parent/teacher conferences. As a gesture of our gratitude we concluded the year with an Olive Garden luncheon served to all active members, It was no surprise that this school year proved to be quite successful because of our aspiring student leaders. We are looking forward to another wonderful year in 2015-16. Ken Abel and Brenda Xiong Co-Advisors PTSA Polar Fund This is the gth year of the Polar Fund.
