David [email protected] Cover Photo 2009 Trike by Harley Davidson Pilot: Jan Dale 3 Volume 2, Issue2 February 2015 The Wash - UMCI Newsletter of Washington State State Reps Corner I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’m inching to get on my Gold Wing for a day ride. I’m hoping the warmer winter will bring an early spring and I can get my motorcycle off the mountain by the end of March. In this month’s “The Wash” you will find an article by Rae Nere. Rae is a long time friend of mine & we took a week riding around Olympia National Park. We enjoyed it so much that I ask her if she would write about our adventure. If you have a favorite ride, restaurant, or some place you visit and liked, why not share it with all of us. Write an article for “The Wash”. UMCI Inland Northwest had their election of officers the first of January. The new officers are yours truly as Inland Northwest Rep. and Charlie Crane Assistant Rep. Thank You Charlie! Also included in this month’s “The Wash” is the Inland NW ride schedule for 2015. Why not come and join us on a ride. Rich Hentz 4 Volume 2, Issue2 February 2015 The Wash - UMCI Newsletter of Washington State Inland Northwest News! The January UMCI meeting at Conley’s was attended by a dozen members who braved the snow and ice to get there. The area has had such a mild winter so far that the snow we received was kind of a surprise. Rich Hentz, the State Rep., officiated the meeting because no one has stepped up as Area Rep., yet. It seems like everyone either has too many things going on already, or doesn’t want to take over because of the time involved and the fear that they won’t be there for every meeting. Rich said that the three local motorcycle clubs including Eastern Evergreen, Panhandle Riders and UMCI, met in December, to discuss what rides and functions they wanted to do. Rich decided at the time, that he wouldn’t suggest any rides for UMCI until after he held the monthly meeting and asked for input from the members. There were several rides mentioned at the meeting and it was agreed that these would be okay for the rides for this year. The subject of a Washington rally was discussed. The members suggested that they would like it to be held on the West side of the state this year, somewhere like Sedro Woolley. Rich said that the ride schedule will be printed and passed out at the next Eastern Evergreen meeting on Jan 10th. There will be an Inland Empire Motorcycle Coalition meeting on February 17th, 7pm, at the Timber Creek Buffet, at 9211 E. Montgomery, in Spokane Valley. All motorcycle clubs are invited to participate and to bring their ride schedules to the meeting so that the various clubs will not schedule their special events and rides at the same time. This helps prevents having several events on the same weekend and no events on others. Meeting was adjourned and fun money drawn. I hope you had a safe and Happy New year and that all your rides this year will be good ones. Billie Leonard 5 Volume 2, Issue2 February 2015 The Wash - UMCI Newsletter of Washington State Columbia Basin News! Well it seems like no one wants to take the helm of the Columbia Basin area so I will again for this edition write the update for our area. We had our regular meeting at Bob’s Restaurant, in Moses Lake, on January 11th, and had a real good turnout for what the weather looked like. It was everyone’s hope that we could take a short ride at our February meeting, but then figured out it was our chili feed that meeting. So for all of you that didn’t come to the meeting there will not be a regular breakfast meeting on February 8th, but at 1pm at 4815 Airway Drive Moses Lake (Max and Mel and Kay’s rec center) our annual Chili feed will be held. Ross said that he would help get our rides put together which will be a great help to whoever takes over the area. The group and I mean the Columbia Basin Area needs to get a little more active and get us on the move again. I am so looking forward to riding with my friends again but it seems like there are a lot fewer in our group riding. Ross invited us to ride with the Legion riders and that is a thought it is always fun riding in groups. I talked to Richard Hentz our new State Rep and he asked if the Columbia Basin Group would again, put on the Spring Banquet, indicated we would keep everything is in place. People enjoy coming to Connell so it is a win-win. I hope to have the flier next months “Wash.” We will see how much I can get done negotiating the meal price. We closed our meeting with the 50/50 drawing and of course I did not win. Hope to see everyone at the Chili Cook off. Let’s get ready to ride. Until we meet again Ride Safe, Ride Lot’s and most of all, have a great time. Kevin 6 Volume 2, Issue2 February 2015 The Wash - UMCI Newsletter of Washington State Our Motorcycle Adventure around Olympia National Park By Rae Nere I will preface by saying that I've been requested to write about our road adventure to Olympic National Park, but with extremely limited restrictions ~ "keep it at one page length." It's impossible to portray this magnificent corner of Washington in such a microscopic window, and therefore will do so in segments. Part I begins with an introduction to the park plus one journey highlight. Are you ready for an "armchair overture?" In a historical context, the Olympic National Forest was established as Olympic Forest Reserve in 1897 and the name was changed to Olympic National Forest in 1907. Mt. Olympus National Monument was originally established by US President Theodore Roosevelt in 1909 with approximately 610,560 acres ~ which was reduced to half its original size in 1915. Its evolution continued when designated a national park by President Franklin Roosevelt in 1938; became an International Biosphere Reserve in 1976; and in 1981 was designated a World Heritage Site. In 1988, Congress designated 95 percent of the park as the Olympic Wilderness. The park has four basic regions: the Pacific coastline, alpine areas, its west side temperate rainforest, and the drier east side forests. Encompassing 1,441 square miles of the Olympic Peninsula (amid a mountainous core and no interior road access), the park may be accessed by several different routes ~ via Puget Sound via Washington State Ferries; from Tacoma; via Olympia; or north from Aberdeen on Highway 101. (We spent nearly a week exploring this park and still did not see it all! I've read you can travel this park in one or two days, but I assure you this quick of a trip will be an injustice both to the park and you!) This is an all-year park ~ summer is the "dry" season, but be prepared for cool temperatures, fog, and rain at any time due to its diversity of biomes and ecosystems. (Winter may entail cold, wet, and snowy conditions.) Once inside the Park, you'll experience innumerable "twisties," and anywhere you go, keep an eye out for wildlife, rough patches in the road, blind curves, and gawking or overawed tourists. We approached the Park from its southwest entrance via Highway 101 in early September and meandered our way to Lake Quinault for our first night's camping. (Whereas the lodges in this park are spectacular and prodigious, they are often very, very "spendy" and tout "No Vacancy" signs, but camping is widely available and definitely more affordable.) 7 Volume 2, Issue2 February 2015 The Wash - UMCI Newsletter of Washington State Our Motorcycle Adventure around Olympia National Park, continued . . . This area serves as a great base camp for rambles through the Hoh Rainforest section, dawdling along the Highway 101 coast, or a mosey through the town of Forks. Sol Duc Hot Springs campground served as our next base camp for explorations of Lake Crescent, Port Angeles, and truly one of the highlights of our trip ~ Cape Flattery. This "detour jaunt" is not in Olympic National Park, but rather on the Makah Reservation near Neah Bay. Head west on Highway 112 to Neah Bay, and continue through along Bay View Avenue for 1 mile. Bay View Avenue becomes Cape Flattery Road ~ hint: follow the yellow center lines on the pavement. The road will turn sharply left, then after 0.1 miles turn sharply right once you get to the west side of the main downtown area. Follow the signs past the clinic for 0.1 miles, turn sharply left again, and follow the road along the foot of Bahokus Peak. You will be on Cape Flattery Road. Continue for another 5.1 miles to the parking lot and trailhead. There is no admission cost to park or hike the trail, but be aware ~ you do need to purchase a $10 Recreation Permit in Neah Bay. The trail is 3/4 of a mile distance from trailhead to overlook, with an overall elevation loss of 200 feet, requiring a moderate amount of exertion for the uphill return to the parking lot. The path consists of dirt sections, stairs, viewing platforms, and boardwalks ~ and leads you through lush green forests of old-growth trees 200+ years old. Boardwalks cover marshy areas of the trail. After a short hike, the trail ends with spectacular and panoramic views of the amazing rocky cliffs and a wide variety of birds. View caves, sea birds, sea-lions on the off-shore rocks, whales following their migratory route, and see where the Pacific Ocean and the entrance of the Straits of Juan de Fuca meet. From this very northwestern tip of the continental United States is a platform for viewing Tatoosh Island and its lighthouse. 8 United Motorcycle Club International – 2015 International Rally July 20 – 23, 2015 Mile Zero Campground – Dawson Creek, BC 1901 Alaska Avenue Freedom, Friendship, Food and Fun Rider: _______________________________ Rider/Passenger: _____________________________ Birthday: (mm/dd/yyyy) _____________________ Birthday: (mm/dd/yyyy) ______________________ {for prize determination} Address:______________________________________________________________________ City:_________________________ Prov / State ___________________ PC/Zip _____________ Home Phone:______________ Cell Phone:______________ Email: ________________________________ Distance to Rally from home address: ______________ Km's Miles REGISTRATION - Thursday Evening BANQUET & Rally Pin $0.00 Early Registration by May 1st------------per person $30.00 X __________ = ______ Registration by June 30th--------------------------per person $35.00 X __________ = $0.00 ______ Late Registration after June 30th-------- per person $45.00 X __________ = $0.00 ______ CAMPING: Open field tenters - ___________ nights X $10. = $0.00 ______ Shared sites, power & water - ____________ nights X $23. = $0.00 ______ RV’s – full service - ____________ nights X $36. = $0.00 ______ T-SHIRTS - $20 Each: S___ M___ L___ T-Shirt Count Summary & Total Count _______ X $20 = ___________ 0 $0.00 XL___ XXL___ XXXL___ TOTAL COST = _______ $0.00 Make cheque payable in CANADIAN FUNDS to Joyce Davis, 5653 Sawmill Rd, Oliver, B.C. Over the years we've put on several clinics in early winter to cover the things most riders fail to take care of. We have seen KLR, DR and DRZ swing arm bolts that had to be destroyed, as water and grime had caused corrosion which made removing them impossible. The rear suspension needs to be cleaned and lubed. Wheel and steering head bearings should be checked and lubed. You might say, "Hey, my bike is new and doesn't need it for awhile." It has been our experience that all bikes have a universal lack of lubrication from the factory. No matter what bike you ride, the information here will be helpful for you, as most bikes have the same general points to cover. 1) Wheel bearings : Are they the OEM non-sealed type? How are the bearing seals? Most nonsealed wheel bearings have very little grease in them. After a few water crossings or overzealous cleaning with a power sprayer there's no grease left. If you remove the OEM wheel bearings, I recommend you have new bearings on hand and ready to go. Grease your new wheel bearings before installing. 2) Steering Head : Check the front forks before removing them. If there is play in the steering head, they need to be replaced. If you do not have a bearing press, have a shop make these repairs for you. If the bearings are good, then clean them, grease them and reinstall the steering head per service manual instructions. 3) Front forks : Now is a great time to service your front forks. If you don't have a service manual, get one before starting this process. Disassemble and inspect the forks. The bushings at the joint of the fork tubes have a Teflon coating; if they are showing a copper color, replace them. Clean and inspect the forks, refill them to the correct level with the correct weight oil, and then reassemble. Note that your fork oil should be replaced on a yearly basis. 11 Volume 2, Issue2 February 2015 The Wash - UMCI Newsletter of Washington State Winter into Spring Bike Tips, continued . . . 4) Rear suspension : Disassemble the rear swing arm; remove and inspect the rear shock. This is a great time to have the shock serviced, which should be done by a suspension expert. Clean and lube the shock absorber linkage. If the needle bearing grease is clean and not contaminated, I recommend re-lubing without cleaning the old grease out. Be careful with the needle bearings, because if you lose one you need to replace the kit. When removing the swing arm bolt, take care not to damage the threads. These bolts can become corroded over time causing them to seize up and making them extremely difficult to remove. If you encounter this, soak it with penetrating oil and let it sit. Note that getting it out may take several attempts. There are bearings inside the sleeve that need to be lubed. These are also needle bearings, so if they need to be cleaned, be very careful. When everything is cleaned and lubed, start your reassembly. 5) Antifreeze : Change the coolant in your bike. 6) Drive train : Check the final drive fluid and change if needed. Clean, check and lube the chain and sprockets. 7) Cables : Inspect, clean and lube all cables. 8) Brakes : Check brake pads and change brake fluid. Inspect the calipers, looking for excessive wear on one side and not the other. If they are not functioning properly you may need to clean and lube them or have them rebuilt. 9) Fuel : If you are storing your bike, use a good fuel stabilizer. It also helps to use a good nonethanol gas when storing a bike. 10) Batteries : If the bike is not being ridden on a regular basis, use a battery tender to extend the life of the battery. 11) Tools : Depending on the type of bike you have, you may need Torx bits, Allen wrenches, Phillips head and flat head screw drivers, a rubber or plastic mallet, bearing and race drivers, Metric wrenches and sockets, a Torque wrench and a shop manual. 12) Supplies : Cable lube, waterproof grease, anti freeze, fuel stabilizer, shop towels and cleaning solvent. 12 Volume 2, Issue2 February 2015 The Wash - UMCI Newsletter of Washington State Inland NW RIDE SCHEDULE FOR 2015 .
