Cruising the Midwest
in style
Last year Ron and Cindy Belcher went to 26 car shows
in six states, logging 6,399 miles

Hundreds of trophies line the walls and fill the corners of the basement of Ron and Cindy Belcher’s Pipestone home.
Some sit on shelves, others on tables and still others are lined up on
the floor or tucked away in corners. Ron, 69, said there’s too many of
them to count. All of them were racked up over the past 10 years since
Ron started taking his vehicles to car shows. It’s a hobby that’s kept
he and his wife Cindy busy driving all over the Midwest to shows in
Minnesota, Illinois, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa and Nebraska —
26 last year, Ron said.

Belcher bought the car in 2004 and restored it for show. The Buick has about
78,000 original miles on it.
It started with Ron’s 1997 Ford F150 pickup that he began showing in
2000. It’s in stock condition with custom pin striping, he said. He took
the truck to shows until their 1962 Buick LeSabre was restored.

Iowa, which is owned by his friend
Doug Hoppe. Ron credits Hoppe’s
instruction for enabling him to do
much of the restoration work on
his own.
“He taught me a lot,” Ron said.
“He’s a good friend and we’ve
shown a lot of cars together.”

runs like new, which is good
because Ron and Cindy rack up
quite a few miles driving to car
shows.
“We put 6,399 miles on last
summer alone going to car shows,”
Ron said.
Ron said his dream car had
always been a 1957 Ford — until
he got the Buick, which, with its
loud pipes and powerful motor,
quickly became his new dream

had only 55,000 actual miles on it, but it had been
sitting outside for eight years after her uncle moved
into a nursing home. When they got it home they
buffed up the paint, cleaned the engine and took it
to a mechanic for an inspection. The mechanic told
them the car was in such good shape that he’d trust
it on a trip to California and back.
“Believe it or not, that vehicle doesn’t leak a drop,”
Ron said.
The restoration of the Continental is a work in
progress, Ron said, and for now it’s just their “cruising car.” While the Buick is his favorite, Ron’s quick
to point out that he means no disrespect to the
Continental, which, at 22 feet in length, offers one of
the smoothest rides around.

Della Bechen is originally from Corsicana, Texas about fifty miles
south of Dallas. She graduated from Corsicana in 1939 than entered
Nursing school in 1941 in Fort Worth, Texas, where she graduated in
1944 with a RN degree. After graduation she entered the Army where
she served seven and half years and received the ranking of captain.
She met her husband Vernon who was originally from Flandreau, SD,
while serving in the Army. In 1963 they moved to Flandreau where
she worked at the VA hospital and local hospital until her retirement
in 1991. In her free time she loves photography, attending hospital
auxiliary, Christian Women, Athena club, and scrap booking. What
she most likes about Greenleaf is the very friendly staff, great home
cooked meals, and they are very helpful in controlling her diabetes.

Sandy Orlick has been a resident of the Flandreau area for many years now.
Currently she is in the National Guard out of the Brookings 139BSB, married to
husband Phil with four children: Nick, Alex, Morgan, and Quinn. Sandy has been in
the health care field off and on for over twenty years now, and has been working for
Greenleaf Assisted Living Center for 2 years. In her free time she enjoys running,
knitting, skiing in the Black Hills, reading, and keeping up with the children’s
school sponsored events. What she most enjoys about her job at Greenleaf is
being around the wonderful people and enjoys cooking for the residents.

gets warm, the Gold Wing is Ron’s
preferred mode of transportation.
“If it’s nice out I take the motorcycle,” Ron said. “That’s it.”
On certain summer evenings,
however, Ron might be found with
about 20 other local car enthusiasts
from the area out for a cruise in
their flashy four wheeled vehicles.
Ron and Jim and Jeremy Whipple
formed the group, which call
themselves the Pipestone Cruisers,
last year. Most of them have classic
cars like Ron’s 1962 Buick, a 1951
Hudson, a 1970 Corvette or a 1972
Nova, just to name a few, and some
have newer sports cars like a 1995
Corvette or a 2008 Shelby GT500.
It’s nothing too formal, Ron
said, just an excuse to get together
for a cruise, dinner, visiting and,
most of all, a good time. Last
year, the group took three rides
to Elkton and Lake Thompson in
South Dakota and Comfrey, Minn.
They recently took their first ride
of the season to Flandreau on
Saturday, April 17.

also a member of the Big Kids Car
Club in Sioux Falls and the Gopher
State Buick Club in Minnesota. He
attends car shows with both organizations and a number of others
that he hears about through the
grapevine. So far, he has plans to
attend shows in Minnesota, Iowa,
Montana, Nebraska and South
Dakota this summer.
Most of the shows cost only
about $15-20 to enter and there’s
a lot of gas involved traveling to
the shows, but clearly the most
expensive part of Ron’s hobby is
the restoration. When asked how
much his hobby has cost him over
the years, Ron replied, “It’s expensive. I’ve got more in the Buick
than I thought I would, let’s just
say that.”
Whatever the cost, it’s worth it
to Ron and Cindy doesn’t seem to
mind — in fact she seems to enjoy
the shows as well. The best part of
the shows and car clubs, Ron said,
is the camaraderie and meeting
new people.
“You meet real good people and
make real good friends,” he said.

The Mustang collector

Given that he’s only 35-years-old, Jeremy Whipple
laughed when he heard he was going to be featured
in a publication called “Senior Focus.”
“I’ve got old cars,” he said.
Exactly.
Whipple’s a Ford guy, Mustangs to be exact. At
his home east of Pipestone near Hatfield he stores
nine Mustangs, including the 1986 Mustang GT
convertible that first got him hooked at the ripe
young age of 16.
Back then, it was his only car so it received a lot more
use. Over the past 12 years, he’s only clocked about
2,000 miles on the car from his youth.

The latest addition to Jeremy Whipple’s Mustang
collection is this 1971 Mach 1 429 (left) that he purchased in February in Detroit. “This is the only year
of the 429 that there wasn’t a Boss (model),” he said.
“Back in the day you could order different rear ends,
and this is one with these (exact) specifications,”
he said. “So it probably gets better gas mileage”
— ‘better’ being a relative term, of course, among
models that get eight-miles-per-gallon.
Jeremy Whipple insures this 1970 Mach 1 CJ428 (right)
for $55,000. “Other than a Boss 429, this was the biggest
engine you could get in a Mustang,” he said, making it
one of the more desirable collectibles. “And 1970 was the
lowest production year (for that model),” he continued.
“They made 624 of these.” In addition to that, Whipple’s is
documented as one of only one of those models made to

afford it, he started collecting.
“I should have kept them when
I was younger,” he said. “But I
couldn’t afford to keep them at the
time.”
Some of the cars he said he
owned include two or three 1955
Chevy’s, a ‘66 GTO, a ‘64 Impala
and a ‘64 Chevelle convertible. He
says he has always been a General
Motors man so it is understandable
that when he started collecting he
began collecting GM vehicles.
“I started with ‘72 Chevy
pickups,” he said. “At one time I had
three of them but you only have so
much garage space.”
Otter attended his first car show
down in Luverne in May 1998 with
a blue and white ’72 Chevy pickup.
His was the only pickup at this
show so he won a trophy. Now, he
says, the popularity of pickups has
grown and there are a lot of people
who show pickups.
Since garnering that first trophy,
Otter has won trophies at shows
in Minnesota, South Dakota, Iowa
and Nebraska, amassing quite a
few others and said with a laugh
that he is just about trophied out.
“It’s fun going to different shows
and seeing the different cars,” Otter
said. “I have met a lot of nice people
from all over. There are a lot of nice
people in the car business.”
Not just meeting new people
but making new friends is also a
part of going to car shows.
Often times when Otter goes to
a show, he doesn’t have to travel
by himself because other car
enthusiasts from the area are also
going.
He says there is a bunch of
car owners who get together and
travel to shows. Ron Belcher from
Pipestone is one and others include
a bunch from Sioux Falls and Sioux
Center, Iowa, and a guy from
Ruthton.
While those owners like going to
shows, Otter said there are some in
Pipestone with older cars who don’t
care to go to shows.
“A lot of collectors just like to
cruise,” he said. “If you just cruise,
you don’t have to clean them so
good. But if you go to shows, that is
different. Going to shows requires a
lot more cleaning.”
Otter said collectors generally
like to collect vehicles that were
around during the time they were
growing up. This is true for Otter as
well because the vehicles he likes
are from the late ‘50s to early ‘70s.
He bought his ‘55 Chevy about
seven years ago and the car was
already redone, which he says is
the cheaper way to go than to get
them redone yourself. He said he
redid one of his ‘72 pickups himself
and it was a lot of work and a lot of
money.
“I always liked ‘55 Chevys and
I saw this one at a car show in
Flandreau,” he said. “After the guy
told me what he wanted for it, I
offered him a price but he declined
my offer.”
But that didn’t deter Otter and
he continued to occasionally talk
with the guy for about a year, each
time making an offer. “I knew he
was reasonable on the asking price
but I just wanted to see if I could get
it cheaper,” he said.
He didn’t just focus on this
particular ‘55 Chevy though and
continued to look at other ‘55s that
were being offered for sale, but said
everyone he looked at was higher
priced.
So after a year of looking
elsewhere Otter called the guy in

April 2003 and told him that when
he got the car out of storage he
would be over to pick it up.
“I bought this one right. It is a
nice car, rides nice and drives nice,”
Otter said. “It has the old look to it
but under the hood it has a newer
power-train, a fuel-injected motor
from a 1991 Firebird that gets about
20-23 miles per gallon.”
He says that he saw the guy he
bought the car from a couple of
months later at a car show in Dell
Rapids, S.D. and the guy told him
that Otter had stole the car from
him. “I said no I didn’t. I gave you
what you wanted for it.” Turns out
the guy rebuilt a ‘55 Chevy Hardtop
and didn’t like it.
He noted that the car has pretty
tall gears in the back so if he was
going 80 mph down the interstate
it would run at two-grand on the
tachometer. “It just idles along,” he
said.
Besides the newer power train,
the Chevy also has a few modern
conveniences such as cruise control,
tilt steering, power front windows,
bucket seats that came out of a
Buick Riviera, air conditioning and
digital gauges and speedometer.
The trunk was also redone
with padded side panels and an
enclosed storage area up behind
the back seat. While showing off
the trunk, Otter pointed out that he
always carries his cleaning kit and
lawn chairs so they are ready for the
next car show.
“I could have sold this one many
times but it is too nice of a car,” he
said of the ‘55 Chevy.
But that hasn’t stopped him
from looking for another classic
car. Currently he is looking for a
1970 El-Camino.
Otter said he had a 1970
El-Camino that he bought new in
1970 but when he got married in
1971 he couldn’t afford the vehicle
so he got rid of it. He would like to
have that car now.

rare vehicle and he said you don’t
see a 1970 El-Camino advertised
very often. He was looking through
a car magazine one day and there
was one for $100,000. “I bought my
1970 El-Camino new for $4,500,” he
said.
“The 70’ El-Camino had a big
motor in it, a 450-horse motor right
from the factory,” he continued. “It
could pass up everything except
the gas station. It didn’t get very
good gas mileage only 3-5 miles per
gallon. Back then that wasn’t so bad
because gas was only 25 cents per
gallon.”
Besides cruising and going to
out of town car shows, for many
years Otter has organized the car
show in Pipestone during the Water
Tower Festival weekend, but won’t
hold it this year.
He said he was unable to find
enough help to organize the car
show. In the past, he has had help
from other car owners and his
family has helped tremendously,
but that isn’t possible this year so
things aren’t going to work out to
have the show, he said.

“It’s getting a little neglected,” he
said.
But he does have eight other
Mustangs to drive during a
Minnesota season that only permits him to take the cars on the
road on weekends about four
months out of the year.
“The worst thing for these old
cars is to sit around so I try to put
miles on them,” he said.
Whipple seems a little young to
be nostalgic about cars past, so
why does he collect?
“They’re our heritage,” he said.
“They don’t make cars like this
anymore.”

have a family to support, so he’s
probably in a better position to
support a hobby that’s “expensive
these days,” he said. For example,
just the 1970 Mach 1 Cobra Jet 428
alone is insured for $55,000. Price
tags like these probably prevent a
lot of younger people from taking
up car collecting, he said.
“Even a little coupe, to get one in
good shape, you’re going to spend
$10,000 or $12,000. So they’re not
cheap cars anymore,” he said.
One of the things he’s learned
about buying old cars is that,
“When people say (a car) needs a
little bit of work, there’s different
degrees of ‘little bit of work’” — a
‘little bit of work’ to one person
could mean a whole restoration
to someone else, he said. It’s also
important to know what you’re
looking for to prevent against buying a clone.
“You can put a 428 in it and say
you have a Mach 1, but it wouldn’t
be,” he said. “That’s the biggest
thing in collecting cars.”
And while they don’t make cars
like they used to, that means, well,
they don’t make cars like they used
to.
“Understand you’re not going to
get very good gas mileage if you
want to go cruising,” he said —
about eight miles per gallon.
In terms of the collectibles of
the future, he said “nobody knows”
what those will be.
“The thing with this ’69 Mach
1, it came with 159 options,” he
said. “So basically every car you
could customize yourself; it was
your car. Today’s cars, you get two
engine options, two transmission
options. If you get the blue exterior
you get the black interior and you
can’t change it…rarity makes them
collectible.”
For example, his 1969 Mach 1
390 is only two of two made with
those exact color and transmission specifications. And his newest
model, a 2008 Shelby GT 500 will
also one day be a collectible, given
that only 2,200 were made.
“So it’s a rare car,” he said.
While it’s hard to tell which cars
will be hot for the collectors of the
future, he said there’s a general
rule of thumb — and Whipple is
living proof that it probably holds
true.
“They always say the cars that
are collectible are the cars that
were really popular when you were
18; when you’re 45, it’s the car
that was on the showroom floor
when you were 18,” he said. “So we
might have a bunch of Mitsubishis
or Toyotas in the future.”
