July - AUGUST 2011 BA Y SHO R E YA C HT C LUB NEW SLETTER Latitude: 40’ 41” 37º Longitude: 73’ 15” 02º Sheryl Hecht, Editor Bay Shore NY 11706 COMMODORE’S COMMENTS COMMODORE’S COMMENTS The past month has been a very busy one for the Bay Shore Yacht Club. Par:cipa:on at the Club and GSBYRA events is way up this year. Parent/Child Race was the largest ever. The volunteerism from the Club members was impressive. I had the privilege of being onboard one of the patrol boats with our instructors and saw the enthusiasm first hand. I would like to thank Carol Schnorr, Gretchen Stang, Larry Becker and all the other members who helped make this event the huge success it was. Three weeks ago, BSYC hosted the GSBYRA Race Week and I would classify it as an unqualified success. Our membership really turned out to volunteer their :me, talents and boats to insure that Bay Shore’s reputa:on on the Bay for competence and a friendly, welcoming aLtude is well deserved. Several members assumed leadership posi:ons and put in yeoman efforts to make this event a huge success. I want to thank Gretchen Douglas and Regina Swanson for an outstanding showing in providing delicious lunches and arranging a wonderful family barbecue on Saturday night. I also want to note that our members were most generous in providing their boats as patrol and commiOee boats. I want to thank in par:cular Jerry Holwell, George Michels and Bill Linden for making their boats available. Also a big thank you to Jeff Chernoff for making his center console available for us as mark set which was manned by Mickey and Barbara Forde. I congratulate GSBYRA President Mark Stang for an outstanding effort to get the various clubs to aOend and compete. Coming up way too fast is our annual Sailing Awards dinner. Please take the opportunity to aOend this important func:on and honor those members who have competed successfully during the season. I thank you all for your efforts to make BSYC the successful organiza:on it is. Kevin P. I can’t say enough wonderful things about our instructors, the sailors and the families who all contributed to this successful summer on the Bay. The sound of the kids’ voices out on the water, laughing and singing while sailing, will stay with me long after the last boat is stored for the season. Participation in the program was up this year and consequently our presence at the Junior Regattas was up as well. We sailed clean and fast and the beloved Bay Shore Cup is coming home! We accomplished so much in these past eight weeks. I must say I am proud of all of us! We can’t wait to celebrate the season on August 27 at 6:00 pm when we don our nautical blues at this year’s Sailing Awards dinner. I hope to see you all there! 2011 Sailing Instructors Millie, Eric & Connor the Haberstroh family - Elizabeth & Joseph, Rachel and John Returning Member, Angela Baumann The Membership Committee has posted 6 new member photos on the bulletin board with thanks to Mark Stang for suggesting the idea; also thanks to our Club photographers for obtaining the photos and thanks to Jerry & Jean Holwell for donating the photo frame. We still need new members’ photos, so please, if your picture is not on display, see one of our photographers or send us a 4 x 6 print of yourselves. bay shore yacht club • west shore drive • bay shore, new york • 11706 July - AUGUST 2011 BA Y SHO R E YA C HT C LUB ENTERTAINMENT NEWS CLUB RENTALS Planning a birthday party? Despite the tenor of the times, some conAidence still existed in the marketplace. For example, at the 1930 National Boat Show, Chris-‐Craft set an all-‐time record for deposits at the show on sales of $2.2 million, representing one third of all orders placed at the show. However, many deposits were forfeited. Yet the franchise operation was still strong. Despite this, the 1931 Boat Show in New York, Chris had a new boat, the Cabin Cruiser, a product of intense effort and years of experience. This was not to ignore the other 26 model boats. As a surprise, CC introduced a 15½ foot runabout, propelled by a 43HP to a speed of 30 mph. This boat helped to boost Alagging sales in larger boats. In 1933, only 14 models were offered. You could buy a new Chevrolet for $495. J. Edgar Hoover was made a scapegoat for the troubles of the nation; most were not his fault. He had some good plans, but couldn’t get the type of cooperation he was used to prior to 1930. Certainly, a large number of FDR plans were needed to get the nation going again. Looking back at the accomplishments of Hoover, FDR was loath to include him in any of his plans. How unfortunate that FDR had some imaginary slight by Hoover preventing him from utilizing Hoover’s great abilities as a planner in the WW1 food programs, and later as administrator. That’s politics for you! Fortunately, Chris managed to keep the company aAloat, despite the early problems of the Depression. Unlike other companies, the members of the Smith family, who were tightly and exclusively involved with the company, wholly owned CC. They didn’t have any playboy or spendthrift members. All concentrated on the success and longevity of the company and were dedicated, hard workers. Thus, their innate work habits and lifestyle helped them survive, while others Aloundered and failed. CC experienced a turnaround in 1934; optimism grew with new cruisers and utility products increasing to 22 models. To be sure, a luxury market was still there but had to be chased after. Consider that the 27’ runabout by CC with a 250 HP engine sold for $4950, about the same price as most models of a 16 cylinder Cadillac. My father’s cousin had such a 1930 Cadillac Phaeton and offered it to my father in 1936 for $600. Fortunately (?!) my mother was against it. Instead, she got a 1936 Buick Century and kept it for 18 years. For 1936, CC was back in its old operation – offering 66 models. CC had pretty much weathered the storm by the end of 1936. One model was a houseboat without an engine, the motive power residing in a 16’ utility, for an additional $695, which acted as a tug. A red, white and blue Raceabout had 85 HP to reach 30 mph. In 1937, the name Fishing Cruiser emerged. This later morphed into Sport Fisherman. Labor unrest began. A strike involving painters, mechanics, handlers and electricians was slowly settled. Over the years, CC made 2, 4, 6, 8, and 12 from 25 to 350 HP. All of these were started in part because the WW1 Curtis OX-‐5 and Liberty engines and their parts stockpiles had started to run out. For 1938, CC offered 105 models, some virtually the same, a production line for 48 & 55 boats, a 16’ racing runabout, model 22, with a 121 HP engine, delivering 44 mph for $1560. War had broken out in Spain and Abyssinia. bay shore yacht club • west shore drive • bay shore, new york • 11706 July - AUGUST 2011 RE G A T T A N E W S G L E NN SC H M ID T There has been plenty of regatta news on the Bay this summer! We started with a bang on July 4th, racing for the Commodores’ Cup and Commodores’ Memorial Cup. The competition for the 2011 Commodores’ Cup included 8 boats, across fleets, scored according to handicap. Mark and Gretchen Stang secured first place in their Narrasketuck. Four boats of junior sailors competed for the Memorial Cup. Sean Linden and Ethan Day won in the 420. Congratulations, sailors! The summer invitational regattas have been in full swing each weekend with 6 of the 8 sailed. Don’t forget the Bellport Labor Day regatta and Queen of the Bay held on Labor Day weekend. Junior Regattas have been a rave success this year! See for yourself: Wet Pants: 75+ boats with over 160 young sailors Babylon: 65 boats (7 from BSYC) and over 100 junior sailors Bayberry: 60 boats (12 from BSYC) and almost 90 young sailors Narrasketuck: 64 boats (14 from BSYC) and just shy of 100 junior sailors Westhampton: 52 boats (2 from BSYC) and 65 young sailors The championships on the Bay are almost complete. > Junior Challenge: Dianne and I escorted the five GSBYRA teams to SUNY Maritime to compete in the Junior Challenge. A total of 20 teams from Hudson River YRA, GSBYRA, JSAofLIS and Eastern Connecticut JSA competed. This year, Peconic-Gardner JSA withdrew from the Challenge and was replaced by the HRYRA. No BSYC junior sailors participated, and the GSBYRA did not fare well. > Midget Challenge: Dianne, Lenny Pearson and I escorted the 4 GSBYRA, including Quinn Russo and Jack White from BSYC, to the USCG Academy to compete with the teams from JSAofLIS, Eastern Connecticut JSA and Peconic-Gardner JSA. While the total GSB team did not fare well, the first place team was in fact from the GSB --- Austin Hulse, Nick Garone (South Bay Water Sports). > Midget Mid-Atlantics: JC Hermus (BBYC) and Sean Linden (BSYC) will sail in the single-handed, and Willey Vakay (WYS) will sail in the double-handed Stonington, CT. While the 2011 GSBYRA Race Week is a memory now, I would be remiss in not mentioning it. I believe it was a great success, despite the uncomfortable heat. The GSBYRA RC Chairman’s request for committee and markset boats kept me busy, but as usual, our membership responded: Boats: RC Flagship ….. A letter of thanks/appreciation has been sent to the Village. In addition, numerous personnel from other clubs augmented the BSYC members on all the boats. Hats off to our Entertainment chairs, Gretchen Douglas and Regina Swanson, and their tremendous ‘supporting cast,’ for taking such good care of all the social aspects of the event! Your efforts are so appreciated! On behalf of the Race Committee, and all the sailors, THANK YOU!!! Still to come is the Sailing Awards dinner and I hope you will all join me in celebrating our sailors, big and small. In addition, the Notice of Race for the Ray Terry Cup, scheduled for October 8 2011, is posted on the website. We hope to have our traditional Atlantique rendezvous following the race. Junior Yacht Club News On Wednesday, July 20th, JYC hosted our annual Parent/Child races. We had more than 20 families participating, and there was quite a bit of competition. With four Mercs out on the water, there were five heats and two semifinal rounds. In the end, first place went to the Mayo family, with Robert Mayo skippering and Ethan Day assisting as crew. The evening was very successful and we had 103 members attend the races and dinner. JYC hosted our Junior Regatta on Thursday, July 22nd. We had beautiful weather and approximately 114 sailors participated. A great day was complete with clean fast sailing. This past Wednesday, JYC hosted our annual Huck Finn races. We had 141 attendees and 17 rafts participating. The creative talents of all our children was evident in the great raft designs. The fun continued onshore in the dunk tank and was followed by a full barbecue. Click here to see the photos! A great time was had by all! Please do not forget that we will be holding our final Wednesday evening races/family night on Aug 24th. The Roy family is hosting this dinner. It will go on, rain or shine! Next week, the sailing instructors will be coordinating different activities for Fun Week. Monday, August 22 we will be heading to Splish Splash. Please get your reservations in by Friday evening to guarantee your spot. There will be assorted activities throughout the week -- please show up at your regular class times. IN T HE SP O T LIG HT J O H N G IA N E L L A PAST COMMODORE, ADOLF LINDEN Optimist competition on the Bay and beyond. Adolf’s beloved Carol ran regatta registration and Adolf Linden came to these shores after WWI at the many mini rendezvous nights. Together they age of 2. Not too long after, he began his love affair with the Great South Bay. He was successful with the enjoyed the friendships and camaraderie the Club offered, taking numerous flotillas to points east every girls too. But is was Carol who landed him, and along came two kids: Gretchen Douglas and William summer. This Linden dedication to the Club is clearly passed Linden. In due time this lifelong resident of Bay Shore on from the Patriarch. Adolf’s leadership to the Club had a gaff rigged sloop sailboat named Fi Re. Later on, an affinity for power boating developed. Thus, is evident in the many offices he has held: Treasurer in 1981-82, Rear Commodore 1985-86, Vice he changed to power boats, naming the first Carol Jean and later the second, Carol Jean II. But his Commodore in 87-88, and finally as the Commodore in 1989. Adolf continues to be an active member of interest in sailing never flagged. All of this interest in the BSYC today. Most recently, Adolf was seen boating and sailing was passed on to children and grandchildren. Daughter Gretchen has been manning the radio during GSBYRA Race Week, keeping track of fleets on and off the water. Adolf affiliated with many programs and most recently, chairs the Entertainment Committee. Likewise, son enjoys attending the mini rendezvous every Tuesday and proudly presents the Past Commodore Trophy William is a true boater, taking on after his dad, each year at our Sailing Awards Dinner. Thus, we see keeping the fleet ship shape as head of Boat Maintenance. Grandchildren enjoy the Junior Yacht that the Adolf holds the Bay Shore Yacht Club and the Great South Bay in high regard, devoting much Club activities, and grandson Sean is involved in of his life to them both. bay shore yacht club • west shore drive • bay shore, new york • 11706 May- JUNE 2011 BA Y SHO R E YA C HT C LUB SUMMER 2011 ~ See more photos at the BSYC page on FaceBook ~ (Continued from page 4) M a y - Fri.
