Ayala Automotive Holdings Corporation and Volkswagen marked the anticipated
return of the iconic automobile brand to the Philippines on September 27.
The momentous occasion began with the brand launch of Volkswagen at Ayala
Corporation’s headquarters at Tower One and Exchange Plaza in Makati.
Ayala President and COO Fernando Zobel de Ayala and Volkswagen President for
Commercial Operations in Greater China/ASEAN Weiming Soh opened the program,
with Soh driving a classic Beetle to signify the enduring affinity for the people’s car,
and FZA driving the 21st century Beetle Cabriolet to signal the fresh and vibrant
beginning for Volkswagen in the Philippines.
“We cannot think of a better time to bring Volkswagen back to the Philippines,” said

interconnection on September 27 at The Globe Tower in Bonifacio Global City.

in a high point in regional telecommunications. Spanning almost 9,000 km, the
US$400-million submarine cable has one of the highest capacities in the world,

with SJC, providing superior interconnectivity within the Philippines and its Asian

APEC Business Advisory Council
meets with world leaders
in Bali
In a private dialogue with leaders of 21 member economies of the Asia Pacific Economic
Cooperation (APEC), the APEC Business Advisory Council presented its recommendations
on trade, investment, and services liberalization.
The report underscored the importance of creating a Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific
and the need for domestic regulatory reforms and adoption of global product data
standards for the supply chain. Other issues raised were on infrastructure investments
and public-private partnerships. The dialogue occurred during the 21st APEC Leaders’
Summit and the council’s fourth quarterly meeting held simultaneously on the first week of
October in Bali, Indonesia.
ABAC Philippine representatives present the report to President Aquino in Malacañang
ABAC held its first meeting in 2013 in Manila, hosted by the Philippines which is
represented by JAZA, Tony Tan Caktiong, and Doris Magsaysay-Ho. This year, ABAC
completed a roadmap for regional food security and attained a milestone in its goal
towards the integration of financial markets in the region.
Together, APEC member-economies account for 54 percent of global GDP. APEC as a
group is expected by the IMF to grow by 6.3% in 2013 and by 6.6% in 2014.

FZA: “CSR alone cannot solve
housing problems”
FZA believes that addressing the housing needs of the poor takes more than just
doing corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities.
“CSR alone cannot solve the housing problems. There are many parts of it where CSR can
help but it cannot solve the bigger problems,” said FZA at the 4th Asia-Pacific Housing
Forum held on October 2 at Dusit Thani Hotel. He was part of the dialogue with thought
leaders on the subject “Beyond handouts: Nurturing shared value and CSR leadership”
together with Kymberly McEigunn Wolff, senior vice president for resource development
of Habitat for Humanity International, Dr. Rodel Lasco, scientific director of the OML
Center, Dr. Sujata Govada, trustee of the Urban Land Institute in Hong Kong, and Askaran
Agarwala, director of Aditya Bria Group of India.
FZA, who is also vice chairman of Habitat’s Board of Directors and chairman of its
Asia-Pacific Council, pointed out the importance working together–the government,
the private sectors, NGOs and the local communities–to find sustainable solutions to
eventually solve problems in housing. “We should also see that housing is at the core of
breaking the poverty cycle. If we cannot give them a roof, they cannot be more excited in
life and become progressive members of the community,” he added.
“Housing issues cannot be taken in isolation from poverty issues,” said Vice
President Jejomar Binay. “Issues on access to clean water, jobs, transportation,
sanitation, sustainable energy, climate change, among other issues, are not just related

On October 1, prior to the conference proper, FZA participated in a roundtable
discussion with Vice President Binay and select ministers and representatives from
Japan, Cambodia, Thailand, Nepal and Singapore. FZA shared his insights on the role of
the private sector and the civil society in addressing poverty housing.
The Asia-Pacific Housing Forum is a biennial conference organized by Habitat for
Humanity which aims to gather “public, private and people sector stakeholders
engaged in seeking solutions to poverty housing issues.” Since 2007, the forum
has gathered stakeholders from more than 50 countries. This year, more than 700
participated in the forum which had theme “Housing as a foundation for breaking the
poverty cycle.” Keynote speakers were Vice President Binay, Habitat CEO Jonathan
Reckford, and Habitat Vice President for Asia Pacific Rick Hathaway. They were joined
by sector leaders from the Philippines and across the region as plenary and track
speakers.

Globe has partnered with Facebook, the top social
media site in the Philippines, to encourage greater
mobile internet use in the Philippines.
On October 23, close to 20 members of the USASEAN Business Council met at Ayala’s headquarters
for a roundtable discussion on Philippine economy,
growth prospects, consumer and investor sentiment,
and public-private sector partnership.
Manila Water was recognized by the International
Water Association (IWA) for its Poblacion Sewage
Treatment Plant. It recently won the Global Award for
Sanitation and Wastewater–Hardware Category in
the IWA Project Innovation Awards-Development.
The group is comprised of CEOs and top executives
of leading global companies doing business in the
Philippines and in the region.

received the award in Nairobi, Kenya.
Globe President and CEO Ernest Cu and Senior
Advisor Peter Bithos met with Facebook Founder and
CEO Mark Zuckerberg in Menlo Park, California, to
complete the partnership.

Microsoft, Motorola, and Mastercard.

The Poblacion Sewage Treatment Plant was noted for
integrated and elevated design that provided a
solution to issues of land availability, sewer network
construction, and pollution control. In 2012, the
facility treated a total of 1.99 billion liters of wastewater.
The IWA Project Innovation Awards – Development
recognizes water supply and sanitation projects in
low- and middle-income countries that demonstrate
innovation and sustainability in design and operations.
In 2010, Manila Water received an IWA Regional
Award for Project Innovation under the Small Projects
Category for the Olandes Sewage Treatment Plant.

BPI introduces new equity fund
for long-term investors
Beginning October 1, with a minimum initial
investment of only P 10,000, investors may subscribe
to the BPI Philippine High-Dividend Equity Fund, the
newest member of the roster of investment funds
managed by BPI’s Asset Management and Trust
Group (AMTG).
The BPI Philippine High-Dividend Equity Fund is an
equity fund—in particular, a Unit Investment Trust
Fund (UITF)—that aims to achieve total return through
a combination of current income and long-term capital
appreciation. It invests in listed companies that have
high dividend yields or have established a history of
dividend payouts. Equity investors are, thus, given the

portfolio is less volatile than the Philippine Stock
Exchange Index (PSEi). According to AMTG, this type
of strategy normally appeals to income-oriented
investors especially during periods of low-interest
rates. It also provides another option to those who

The strategy of this equity fund is also most effective
for investors with a five-year investment horizon.

minimize traffic impact
of sewer project
During the June groundbreaking ceremony for the
P 350-million Marikina North Wastewater Priority
Segment Project, the first phase of the Marikina North
Sewer Network Project, Manila Water Operations
Services Head Estelita Orodio declared in her opening
remarks that the project would use the new micro
tunneling or trenchless methodology.
“This minimizes the need for open-cut excavation,
thus minimizing the traffic impact of the project,” she
said. The collected sewage in Marikina will be treated
at the Marikina North Sewage Treatment Plant located
at Balubad Resettlement Site in Brgy. Nangka.

According to Treasurer Ramon Opulencia, the
Preferred “B” shares will be offered at P 500 per
share with a fixed quarterly dividend rate based on
a 10-year PDST-R2 benchmark plus spread. The
shares are structured as a perpetual with a call
option on the 10th and 15th year.
The offer period was from November 4 to 8.
Ayala also reminded holders of Preferred “A”
shares, also called ACPA shares, of the company’s
exercise of the call option on November 25, the
fifth year from their listing date. The shares shall
be redeemed at the redemption price equal to the
issue price plus all accrued and unpaid dividends
based on the dividend rate of 8.880% per annum.
Ayala requested for a trading suspension from the
Philippine Stock Exchange starting November 11 until
the re-issuance of the shares.
On October 10, ALI issued P 4 billion bonds due
2023 and P 2 billion bonds due 2033. The latter is
the longest tenor for any domestic corporate issuer
to date.
ALI’s bonds were simultaneously listed at the
Philippine Dealing & Exchange Corporation on
October 7. The bonds carry coupon rates of 4.625%
and 6.00%, respectively.
According to CFO Jaime Ysmael, ALI caps another
banner year as it lists an aggregate P 21 billion. In
July, ALI had the single largest corporate issue for
the 10-year tenor when it listed the initial tranche
of P 15 billion.

for greater customer centricity
JAZA keynoted the 8th Ayala group HR Summit held
November 5 at InterContinental Manila with the theme “Alagang
Ayala,” highlighting the thrust of the conglomerate towards
customer centricity.
In his address, JAZA spoke of the importance of excellent customer
service and related it to the Filipino values of “malasakit” and
“bayanihan” which emphasize care, concern for others, and a sense
of community.
These values, he said, when incorporated into the way Ayala
companies deal with customers, “not only differentiates us within
the country, but actually differentiates us as a people in the global
sphere.”
Moreover, JAZA observed that customer service is a “core
strength” of Filipinos and he envisions this to be a hallmark trait of
the Ayala group.
JP Orbeta, for his part, described this year’s HR Summit as “meant to
be the richest gathering in terms of content and learning.”
The annual HR Summit brings together top executives, human
resource professionals, and employees of the conglomerate for a
day-long series of educational and informative plenary sessions

The Ayala group held its 3rd Sustainability Summit on October 10 at InterContinental
Manila with focus on sustainability as an integrated approach.
The event was attended by more than 300 guests including CEOs and sustainability
practitioners of the group companies, resource speakers, and exhibitors.
In his keynote address, JAZA observed: “The idea of sustainability is something that has
been evolving globally. Not all corporations follow it, but within the Ayala group, we increasingly
feel that we have a broader engagement with society, a broader responsibility that we

of Valuation/Financial Modeling” and “Lessons Learned in Structuring/Negotiating
Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Concession Agreements and EPC Contracts.”

The brand launch was followed by the People’s Car Celebration on September 28 and 29 at
Greenbelt, where people of all ages participated in a number of interactive exhibits and viewed
the nine car models. The celebration culminated in the raffle of the first-ever 21st Century Beetle

The occasion also marked the opening of the first Volkswagen showroom in Bonifacio Global City,
with 5,000 square meters of floor area that can display up to 18 vehicles. It will soon have 10
service bays to attend to the needs of customers. In the meantime, the Volkswagen Greenfield
Service Center in Mandaluyong City is operational with 15 service bays in a 2,200 sqm
state-of-the-art facility.
Volkswagen Cebu is scheduled to start operations by the first semester of 2014 and a total of six
dealerships are planned for construction and will open by next year.

Parents and guests learn more about the features of the
APEC school at Emilio Aguinaldo College
LiveIt Global Services Management Institute Inc launched its first
Affordable Private Education Center (APEC) School on July 15 at the Manila
campus of its partner, Emilio Aguinaldo College (EAC). EAC is a private,
non-sectarian, co-educational institution founded in 1973.
APEC, which targets the C and D markets, aims to provide affordable, quality
high-school education that delivers enhanced curriculum with strong focus
on necessary skills and values that will help prepare students for tertiary
education or immediate employment.
The school adopts an innovative low-cost model initially developed in countries
such as Ghana, Kenya, and Bangladesh by Pearson, LiveIt’s JV partner. It
aims to combine technology in the learning process through the use of digital
classrooms (digital boards, projectors, e-readers) and CCTVs. “We studied
(these best practices), combined them, and made them relevant for the
Philippines so that we could do it here at EAC,” said Beth Lui, CEO of APEC.
For its first year of operations, APEC in EAC offers Grades 7 and 8, with 50
students in Grade 7 and 21 in Grade 8. APEC plans to expand to at least
10 more schools next school year, and 40 eventually.
The event was attended by representatives from LiveIt, EAC, AFI, and
the APEC School Team. Guests and parents viewed the school facilities,
including equipment used by APEC-EAC to enhance the learning
experience.

Global Filipino School, mEducation
presented to GSMA
Benguet schools get
seedling nurseries, computers
Globe recently showcased the first Global Filipino School (GFS) to visiting members
of GSM Association (GSMA), an international organization of nearly 800 mobile
operators and related companies promoting mobile-based education in the Philippines.
In Benguet province, students are being engaged to help build and maintain seedling
nurseries and are getting an education on environmental conservation in the
process.
Bilar National High School (BNHS) in Bohol uses the project-based learning approach
encouraging student collaboration, multi-subject learning, and research through the
Internet. The approach is being implemented in 342 public high schools nationwide.
“Start with the seed and start with the young and grow forests from there,” says
Fernando Esguerra, citing the catchphrase for the Roots & Shoots program of the
Cordillera Conservation Trust (CCT) that Globe is supporting. Roots & Shoots aims to
help reforest mountainsides, enhance community watersheds, and prevent landslides in
critical areas.
“We want to show that we can establish centers of expertise in ICT for education in
the Philippine public school system,” said Fernando Esguerra, OIC of Globe CSR. GFS
is Globe’s response to the 2030 Education for All (EFA) Global Monitoring Report
published by the United Nations.

With 24 desktop and 10 laptop computers with Internet connection, GFS directly
benefits 30 teachers and 750 students of BNHS.
Globe provided P 800,000 for the establishment of the seedling nurseries hosted by 21
public elementary schools in La Trinidad, Tuba, Kapangan, and Kabayan. The amount
came from the funds raised during the Globe Cordillera Challenge held in 2012. An
additional 30 seedling nurseries will be established using P 1.2 million in funds raised
during this year’s biking event.
The Department of Education serves as GFS co-convenor, helping craft the blueprint
of the program and monitor its implementation and results.
“The schools are now the production centers for the community’s forest building needs,
situated right where they are needed most,” observes CCT Executive Director JP Alipio.
Globe also shared its 9-year Text2Teach mobile education initiative with GSMA.
During the workshop, Globe presented its education-related activities, and explored
possibilities in mEducation in the global and local context.
AFI also donated 60 refurbished desktop computers to the elementary schools hosting
the seedling nurseries. The computers will be used to supplement environmental
education of the students who are being tapped to build and maintain the nurseries.

Ayala Malls recently presented the best of Negrense artistry and ingenuity in The 28th Negros Trade
Fair at the new Glorietta Activity Center.
The Negros Trade Fair celebrated 28 years of success by coming back to where it all began, in
Makati. It was in 1985 when the first fair, known as The House of Negros Trade Fair, was held
at the QUAD Carpark. The following year, it was again held in Makati, this time at the Manila Garden
Hotel. Subsequently, The Negros Trade Fair travelled to Pasay and Mandaluyong, and to large
venues that could accommodate the fast-growing participation.

Manila Water has been given the Best Compliance
Monitoring Report Award by the Department of
Environment and Natural Resources-Environmental
Management Bureau for its Manila Third Sewerage
Project.
In summer 2011, electronics
manufacturing services (EMS)
provider Integrated MicroElectronics Inc (IMI) completed the
acquisition of four subsidiaries of EPIQ NV in Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, and Mexico. The acquired design assets
included electronic subsystems for automotive and industrial markets.
The award was given during the first National
Convention on the Philippine Environmental Impact
Statement (EIS) System encouraging companies to
comply with their respective Environmental Compliance
Certificates.
The Laguna Lake Development Authority has also
awarded Manila Water with the Blue rating for the
company’s eight used water facilities’ strict adherence
to environmental regulations and effluent standards of
the authority from 2010 to 2012.
The eight wastewater facilities are the sewage
treatment plants in East and Visayas Avenues, Heroes
Hill Village, Pag-asa Bliss and Sikatuna Bliss, Palosapis,
and the San Mateo North Septage Treatment Plant.
The acquisition led to renewed opportunities for developing new products with higher complexities and launched new
platforms, such as the motor drive, that eventually became key in drastically reducing the material costs of manufacturing
parts such as connectors, PCBs, housings and molding.
“The motor drive platform brought a new technology portfolio to IMI’s production expertise,” explains Philippe Marquet,
head of design operations of IMI Europe. “It also enabled IMI Europe to effectively use complex technologies and reduce
the risk of product malfunctions.”
IMI’s focus on design competence is showing positive results. Motor drive-related activities correspond to 60% of IMI’s
turnover in Europe and Mexico. Design competence also helps IMI understand customers’ future needs.
As an EMS partner doing the module design and build-box assembly work for OEMs, IMI Europe has further consolidated
its design capabilities. IMI Europe has also started promoting redesign and product risk analysis to customers. As a result
of such a proactive design approach, IMI is getting noticed for its expertise in automotive-related design services as well
as full support for safety and ASPICE standards.

National Police and Globe in Mabolo, Cebu City, led to
the arrest of a suspected illegal seller of repeaters or
signal boosters.
Criminal charges have been filed against the suspect
for violation of the E-Commerce Act, Access Device
Act, and the Anti-Fencing Law.

BPI Europe Plc, a wholly owned subsidiary of BPI,
hosted the 7th BPInoy Awards on September 21 at
Millennium Gloucester Hotel in London.
Dubbed as An Evening of Success Stories: The
Philippines and the World-Class Filipino, the event
honored two exceptional world-class Europe-based
Filipinos, namely international theatre, film, and
television actor Junix Inocian and chemist Reynaldo
Lachica.
Filipinos who have made the Philippines proud
not only through their accomplishments, but also
because of their positive impact on fellow Filipinos.
For 2012, BPI opened the nomination exclusively to
Europe-based Filipinos.
The BPInoy Awards is held annually under the BPInoy
Program of the bank to recognize and honor overseas

for Text2Teach

visit Ayala Museum
Public school students listen as their teacher explains a
lesson downloaded via Text2Teach
Globe has committed P 9.4 million for the fourth phase
of the innovative teaching program Text2Teach which is
scheduled for completion in 2014. The amount covers
mobile voice and data requirements of 850 public
elementary schools in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
“Being part of the Text2Teach Alliance is one way of
serving as a catalyst for community transformation via
improved education,” says Fernando Esguerra.
Since 2004, Text2Teach has helped improve the
academic performance of Grades 5 and 6 students
nationwide through educational videos downloaded via
Nokia mobile phones and Globe Internet connection.
Schools also receive a television set, teacher training,
and guide books.
So far, 300 public elementary schools in the Visayas
region have either started or committed to implement
Text2Teach’s phase four. The private sector-led initiative
has reached a total of 752 schools and has benefited
over a million students.

Pushing bikers’ limits
Globe Arakan XC participants like Eric Bergavera help raise funds

When Eric Bergavera of Globe’s Davao office heard
about Globe Arakan XC last year, he was ready for the
60-km challenge. He pushed himself to complete the
trail.
Eric made it to the top 10, the first among Globe
volunteers.
Globe Arakan XC2 pushed bikers to their limits anew.
Held in Davao City on October 13, the race started and
ended at the Philippine Eagle Center. Funds raised
were donated to the Forest Corridor Development
Program of the Philippine Eagle Foundation.

Twenty five youth leaders from the Association of
Southeast Asian Nations met with US Secretary of
State John Kerry on October 10 in Brunei during the
ASEAN Summit.
203 members of the Benedictine Educators’ Network
(BENET), an international organization composed
of Benedictine priests, nuns, teachers, and lay
people, visited Ayala Museum on October 24. The
tour provided participants a good appreciation of
Philippine history and culture.
During the meeting, called “A Conversation with Asean
Young Leaders” facilitated by Joseph Anthony Quesada,
manager of AFI’s Youth Leadership program, Kerry
expressed amazement at the fact that 65% of the
population is under 35 years old. “The future really
belongs to you,’’ he said to the audience.
Father Christopher Jamison OSB, who is currently
the president of the International Commission on
Benedictine Education, was a teacher and eventually
the Abbot of Worth Scholl and Worth Abbey, where
JAZA and FZA received their secondary education in
the UK in the early 1970s.
Delegates from the Philippines were Ayana Jamnia
Maranda from Mindanao State University–Iligan
Institute of Technology, and John Patrick Allengui
from the Ateneo de Manila University.
The educators attended a four-day global conference
dubbed as BENET 2013 in Manila hosted by the
St. Scholastica’s College and Priory.

The dialogue with Kerry is a preliminary event to
the ASEAN Youth Leaders Summit to be held from
December 2 to 10 in the Philippines, organized by
AFI in partnership with the US Embassy. Around 150
youth from the region are expected to participate.

Winning its first JZA Cup, ALI overtook early favorites
MWC and Globe after ALI brought MWC to its knees
in men’s volleyball, 3-1, enough to bring ALI to the
overall lead in the scoreboard with 191.5 points over
defending champion MWC’s 183. ALI’s dance crew
also ruled the groupwide streetdance competition,
with MWC and AC as runners up.
In bowling, Globe and IMI emerged champion and
first runner-up, respectively, surprising all-time
tournament leader MWC, which settled for third.
The Globe golfers also outclassed their closest
rivals ALI and BPI.
This year’s JZA Cup was at its most thrilling, with no

Faye Corcuera’s family receive the PMAP award on her behalf
Fidelina Corcuera, BPI SVP and head of HR, was
named the 2013 People Manager of the Year during
the annual convention of the People Management
Association of the Philippines (PMAP).
Corcuera said, “This PMAP award is an affirmation that
we share a vocation that is about value creation, about
building people and organizations.”
Upon joining BPI in 2007, Corcuera created an HR
transformation strategy aligned with the changing
business requirements of the bank. The HR Service
Delivery team was transformed from being highly
administrative and transactional to a more value-adding
and strategic HR.
BPI was recently recognized as Employer of the Year–
Gold during the 8th Asian Banking and Finance Awards
and Grand Winner of the 2013 Kapatid Awards given
by the Employers’ Confederation of the Philippines.
PMAP named the BPI Harvard LEAP Program as People
Program of the Year in 2012.

Katrina Noelle M. Gosiengfiao, daughter of Sherry
Gosiengfiao of Ayala Strategic Human Resources,
won a gold medal in the recently concluded 46th
Shell National Students Art Competition.
Xieng, a senior Fine Arts student at the University
of the Philippines, ranked first in sculpture with her
entry “Bukas na Lata”. The resin cast sculpture
depicts several human bodies crammed together,
taking on the shape of a tin can beside it. She
explains that her work is a metaphor for human
commodification and exploitation.
The annual Shell competition chooses the best
student artwork in oil/acrylic, watercolor, sculpture,
and digital fine arts. The winning entries were on
exhibit at Ayala Museum until September 22.
Manila Water Group Director for Operations
Geodino “Ding” Carpio was recently recognized
by the Philippine Normal University as an Eminent
Alumnus. The award is given to the university’s
alumni who are acknowledged as prominent and
distinguished in the different sectors of society.
Under a scholarship grant from the National
Science Development Board, Carpio earned a
Bachelor of Science in Physics teaching at the
Philippine Normal University from 1976 to 1980 in
consortium with De La Salle University.
The awards ceremony held on September 30
was in line with PNU’s celebration of its 112th
Foundation Day with the theme, “One PNU, One
Philippines, One ASEAN”. Carpio was among 26
alumni honored this year. Other awardees included
Associate Justice Amy Lazaro-Javier, NCCA Director
Emelita Almosora, Dr. Milwida Guevara of Synergia
Foundation, and Nathaniel De Vera of St. Luke’s
Medical Center.

The event was attended by HERO scholars with
their families, officers, and enlisted personnel of the
Armed Forces of the Philippines, and representatives
of the private sector. Featured performers were worldclass violinist John Lesaca, Princess Velasco, Young JV,
Chad Borja, Jinky Vidal, Top Suzara, Mark Bautista, the
Harana Quartet, and local bands including Banda ni
Kleggy, Moonstar88, 6 Cycle Mind, and Callalilly.
Since its creation in 1988, HERO Foundation
has helped 939 scholars graduate from college
and technical vocational courses. At present, the
foundation has 721 active scholars nationwide.
LitFest turns folk, pop!
From August to September, Ayala Museum organized a traveling exhibition
on National Artist Carlos “Botong” Francisco at The District North Point Mall
in Talisay, Negros Occidental.
Entitled “Botong Francisco: A Nation Imagined,” this exhibition featured 25
reproductions of Botong’s
paintings from institutional
and private collections.
Accompanying these images
was a film produced by AFI
and directed by acclaimed
filmmaker Peque Gallaga on
Botong’s vision and artistry.
Among the Platinum awardees were Ayala, ALI, Ayala
Malls Group, Ayala Malls Cinemas, and Globe. BPI
Foundation and NUVALI were Silver awardees, and
Makati Development Corporation was cited as a
Bronze awardee.
This November, Filipino writers will discuss folk and
popular literature as shown in komiks, TV, and film
as the National Book Development Board (NBDB),
Filipinas Heritage Library (FHL), and Ayala Museum
hold POPtastik Pinoy!
The event is part of the 4th Philippine International Literary
Festival. Titled “Text and the City”, the LitFest takes place in
the major universities in Metro Manila from November 11 to
14, and at Ayala Museum on November 15.
Speaking at the universities are Xu Xi of Hong Kong
(University of Sto. Tomas), Singapore-based Kamini
Ramachandran and London’s Jasmine Anne Corray (De La
Salle University); Canadian Peter Swirski (Ateneo de Manila
University); Singaporean Suchen Lim (University of the
Philippines); and American Krys Lee (Ayala Museum). Many other local and regional writers are
expected to attend the festival.
On November 15, the talks at Ayala Museum feature comics artists Manix Abrera, Noel
Pascual, AJ Bernardo, Karen Francisco, and Budjette Tan; novelists Eros Atalia, Luna Sicat
Cleto, and Edgar Samar; scriptwriter Suzette Doctolero; fictionists Sarge Lacuesta and Yvette
Tan; journalists Ruel de Vera and Kristine Fonacier; Prof. Patrick Campos; celebrated writers
Tony Perez, Rolando Tolentino, and Isagani R. Cruz; and self-published author Garitony Nicolas.
The LitFest stretches to the following week at the Ayala Malls. On November 17, a movie
marathon of GMA films will be held at the new Glorietta Activity Center, along with a mini
fair for indie komiks creators and sellers, and small or independent publishers. The public
may also view GMA 7 telefantasya costumes on exhibit from November 18 to 24.

ALI continues to enhance
land and enrich lives
Ayala Land turns 25 this year but it builds on a legacy in
urban development that spans nearly a century.
After all, ALI traces its roots to the property division
of parent Ayala, which began its foray into real estate
in the 1920s. Rentals from commercial properties in
downtown Manila also contributed to the firm’s income.

the country’s first commercial airport; its two runways
are now Ayala Avenue and Paseo de Roxas.
in the 1990s, Bonifacio Global City in 2003, and in recent
years, Quezon City, Pampanga, Subic, Davao, Cagayan de
Oro, Iloilo, and Bulacan, to name a few.
During the Second World War, Alfonso Zobel refused
to give the Japanese military the title to the Nielson
airfield. This bold move preserved the core of Hacienda
Makati and made it possible for the company to pursue
the Ayala Master Plan, a 25-year urban development
program envisioned by Col. Joseph McMicking.
It also began to address the needs of a broader market
by introducing new developments for the middle-income
and economic housing segments, recreational and
leisure markets, and the business process outsourcing
industry. It has ventured into international real estate
investments and made sustainability core to its
business philosophy.
The success in transforming the grass lands of Makati
into the country’s premier residential, business, and
commercial district inspired Ayala to develop Alabang, a
suburb south of Manila, in the 1970s and 1980s.
By the time ALI was spun off from Ayala in 1988, it was
ready to pursue a similar vision for other areas in Metro
Manila and beyond: Metro Cebu and Laguna Technopark
Today ALI retains the passion for building—and nation
building—that it has borne from the start. The spaces it
creates symbolize fulfilled dreams and give rise to new
ones, spur growth not only for merchants and tenants
but also for entire communities, and continue to stand
for the brand of quality, integrity, and excellence that is
distinctly Ayala Land.
Help for Bohol, Cebu
The 7.2 magnitude earthquake of October 15 affected more than 3 million individuals and caused
more than P 2 billion worth of damage to infrastructure. Ayala companies in Manila and in the Visayas
immediately mobilized people and resources to ensure the safety of employees and customers, carry on
vital operations, and send help to the public.
• BPI kept open two branches in Bohol to serve customer transactions.
• Globe Telecom set up 11 Libreng Tawag and 8 Libreng Charging stations, and distributed 2,843 relief goods. Its facilities in the region remained fully operational.
• Manila Water deployed a Mobile Treatment Plant to Bohol and supplied 308,000 liters of clean and potable water.
• Cebu Holdings monitored and ensured the structural integrity of its owned and managed properties.
It provided additional security personnel in open spaces of the business park where families
camped overnight.
•The structural integrity of the new Honda Cars Cebu showroom under construction remained intact.
Isuzu Bohol’s service facility has been cleared for operations.
• Ayala Business Club (ABC) Cebu facilitated relief efforts its member companies and purchased generators for use in areas with power interruption. It also initiated a donation drive together with Ayala Center Cebu.
• Ayala Foundation monitored its partner
communities and activated its donation channels.
• Ayala Malls continues to accept donations in kind through mall concierges.
On the ground, Dom Emmanuel Dalangin, team
leader of the eight-man operating crew of Manila
Water’s MTP, shared that the Bol-anons were very
thankful for the support they received.
“We strongly feel the hardships that our countrymen
are going through in times of disasters,” said
Dalangin. “Despite the challenges, we are all willing
to help because we know how these people feel. We
would like to be of assistance in any way we can.”

season begins
in Makati
Close to a million LED lights along Ayala Avenue, Makati Avenue, and Paseo de Roxas, usher in the holiday season to the

Songs of Hope
and Visions of
Heaven on Earth
On November 8, the Ayala group presented a
free benefit concert called “Songs of Hope”
at Tower One featuring the Loboc Children’s
Choir. The concert raised funds for the
restoration of churches in Bohol.
Ayala Museum and Ayala Malls exhibited
photographs of ceiling paintings from
those colonial churches. Co-curated by
Ayala Museum’s Kenneth Esguerra, with
photography by Atty. Paquito “Jojo” Ochoa Jr,
“Kisame: Visions of Heaven on Earth” was
held from November 11 to 14 at Greenbelt,
to give the public a glimpse of treasures lost
from the earthquake.
