Several Members gave the Toast and the Grace and then a young Maori lady from the Maori Troupe sang the New Zealand National Anthem in Maori and English which the crowd of around 80 guests showed their appreciation. Paul then called for a show of hands for how many Kiwis were present. Several hands were raised - Bob Challis, Karen Joel to mention a few and even George Jerzyk put is hand up but we all know he is Polish. Apologies were then read out and Paul then announced 5 minutes of fellowship. Later in the evening we were to enjoy the haka from the Maori Troupe as well as other traditional Kiwi songs always with the catch cry Kia Ora! Another great fellowship evening at our Club. It was obvious that some needed to work on their technique but it was a nice try and a lot of fun. Jim Donnelly said “we will be fined” and so became the first fine of the night. The sergeant then started off by saying "In New Zealand where men are men and the sheep are plentiful”. Some member yelled out ‘nervous’. His name has not been disclosed to protect his reputation as a respected Bulletin Editor. * All those not dressed in black and white: It was the Silver Ferns night and the Sergeant fined all not suitably dressed including himself and wife Leone; * Geoff Bentley: Sarg said he spoke too long in his secretary announcements spot. 3 minutes and 30 seconds. Should have been 25 seconds but he was 8 times the limit; * Phil Mellet: Left a dollar with PP Peter Johns for his fine. After two weeks horse back riding in the High Country and he apparently bent over to pick up his golf card and did his back in; * PP Commodore Johns: Peter & Karen off for second honeymoon holiday with Mellets to Hobart then a weekend at Lake House at Daylesford; * Clyde White: Saved the whole meeting by staying at the meeting; * Mac Chapman: Was at a pub watching the Bombers playing the Swans and he was getting really excited so he went home turned on the telly and couldn’t find the match. Of course it was from last year. * Mac Chapman: Also picked up his new car and its a white Porsche 911 and he said it was white for purity. He now has a permanent booking with his physio every Thursday as his back is gone from getting in and out; * Kiwis: The Kiwis will tell you that the Pavlova was invented in New Zealand and it was although the Sarg said it was invented whilst Dame Pavlova was on stage in Australia and he reckons the jury is still out on that one; * George Jerzyk: Has been behaving himself. It was unintentional. He was on a bus going to the Rod Stewart concert and there were two young ladies from Perth and he was just getting into his stride when his daughter told him ‘You are on a bus and too old so behave yourself’. George enjoyed the concert but not so much the bus trip; * Eric Barr: Following on from the Damien Hellard/Eric Barr fish pond saga Eric found recently that one of his fish was floating upside down on the surface but Damien said it was just resting and it died when Eric took it out. The debate was to continue in the carpark; * Anyone with Assets in New Zealand: The NZ dollar just went north of the Aussie dollar. Sarg reckons they should pay a fine for all those totally undeserved capital gains; * Irish & Dutch in the room: Canberra’s tax scheme seems to have all the companies going over to either Double Irish and Dutch standard; * Rob & Marion Nicholes: Went to Nadi for a reunion that wasn’t. It turned out to be daughter Mandy’s wedding; * PP Alan Pinkus: Was worried about everyone turning up in black and white and he went to a lot of trouble just to look like a dickhead. Sarg said he needn’t have bothered; * Ken Paterson: Got 3 picks in the footy picks - footy expert? * PP Des Thomas: Looking more like Gary Ablett Jnr every day. Says its his wonderful shaver that Carmel bought him. Can’t stop talking about it; * PP Ron Sher: Nice new Lexus in the carpark, parked over two spots. Damien Hellard’s one tonne Ute had trouble parking near it; * Bruce Cunningham: He has finally retired. , Last Week s Raffle PP Brett Parkin was ably assisted by partner Belle in the running of the raffle last week. The winners were: 1. Robyn Foster (NZ wine) 2. Darren Donnellan (NZ wine) 3. David Smyth (NZ wine) 4. Ranks rapidly diminish, years fly, will generations know for whom to cry. Sadly, over centuries, humans suffer grief, pain, zealots of nationalism, religion, responsible all youth slain. Lives shattered, as struck by bolts of lightning, manipulated masses damned by greed, globally frightening. Results: Jim Moore got the Longest Drive, Bruce Crossley won Nearest-the-pin, Arthur Hubbard was the Handicap Winner and Daryl Forge was the Off The Stick winner. Daryl Forge also renewed his membership of the in-the-water club on the Venus hole and Graeme Wallace, believe it or not, tapping in for his fourth consecutive Venus trophy in only 11 weeks - amazing performance! Graeme now joins Venus legend IPC (Immediate Past Captain) Ian Cole with the most Venus wins of six. Lastly, through the efforts of Ian Cole, the Hackers will be getting some free publicity on 3GDR Golden Days Radio 95.7 FM Caulfield. 11 APRIL: With daylight saving behind us, it was a light and bright start to a perfect day for golf - sunny, still and warmish. Ten happy Hackers lined up for the Pre-game Putting competition which was won by Bruce Crossley, who casually holed his first putt. Soon after, latecomers Daryl Forge and Cameron Spence hurriedly emerged from the car park to make a dozen gathered at the first tee. Undeterred, Cameron pulled out his new 44” Titleist driver to grab a birdie at the first hole, while Daryl continued his good form from last week by snagging Nearest-The-Pin on the fourth. Ron Stark was another bolter with two pars from the first four holes. Rob Foster was the first to tee off at the longest drive hole (#7) and thought he had it won with a magnificent 240 metre effort. Then Bill Howley, in the next group, produced a monster 270 metre drive, only to be eclipsed by a rampant Cameron Spence and his new driver reaching an astonishing 300 metres. Sven-Erik Bredenberg also distinguished himself on this hole by sinking a 15 metre putt, as did Bruce Crossley by performing a silent Haka on Paul Nicholson’s lie. Meanwhile, in the third and last group, it was a Battle Royale for second place behind Cameron (and hence the honour of buying the coffee) between Ray Street and Ivan Vojlay. In a nail-biting finish, Ivan drew level with Ray with a prolific display from the bunker to card a Rotary nine on the last. James Tisdall, a model of consistency, won the coffee honours for the first group, as did Daryl Forge for the second group. Ian Cole also had a good round, with a birdie on the last and an improvement of eight strokes from last week. The encouragement award went to Paul Nicholson, who carded nine shots less than last week. However, the day belonged to Rob Foster and Cameron Spence. Cameron equalled his own Hacker’s Off-The-Stick record score of 33 comprising two birdies, five pars and two bogeys - a fantastic par round! Rob was runner-up on 40 (4 pars) and Ian Cole third with 41 (3 pars and 1 birdie). Handicap placings went to the same trio, but with Rob taking out the honours and the silver trophy. Overall, a most enjoyable morning of golf and fellowship.
