Case Study REDEX Ferrières
When high-precision mechanical quality
rhymes with Hexagon Metrology CMM
Specialising in the design, production and
distribution of high-tech power transmission
systems, REDEX is led by a team of topflight engineers and makes every effort to
optimise the technologies used, both in
designing and manufacturing the products.
REDEX ANDANTEX is a genuinely
international company with employees
hailing from around the world and who
are all united by the same passion for
their specific field: ultra high-precision
mechanical engineering.
Specialising in high-precision mechanical
engineering, Redex was founded in 1949
and is still driven by the same goal: the
quality of its products in a context of
long-term development. Managed by the
grandson of its founder, Redex focuses
on two main product lines: a machine
activity for the strip and wire industry and
a power transmission activity. Every day,
more than 330 employees ensure that the
group continues to optimise its technology, a fact which is reflected in a number
of patent applications being filed every
year. More than one third of the company’s turnover is generated by products
developed over the past five years while
70% of its turnover comes from products
sold outside Europe.
«Redex counts on the development of
its production processes to ensure a
constant increase in production quality,»
explains the industrial director Pascal
Vieugué, adding «We invest several
million euros per year in new production
means. Our development in the machine-tool market is an important stage in
the Redex quality system, as mechanical
installations with no play require very
limited tolerances and thus a very precise
dimensional inspection».
Already a pioneer in its field and absolutely meticulous about the quality of
its products twenty years ago, Redex
purchased a digitally-controlled DEA IOTA
inspection machine which measures 1
point/second with a precision of approximately 5µ + 4/1000 as well as a manual
OMICRON machine. «Our 1984 DEA OMICRON is still in excellent working order»
boasts Mr Vieugué. «Retrofitted» with
PC-DMIS Pro, simple and easy to use, the
DEA CMM certainly has a number of years
left in it yet and will be an integral part
of the new Redex production site which
is still under construction. Nevertheless,
the products developed by Redex require
an altogether different level of precision.
The Leitz Reference machine recently
purchased by the Ferrières company has
taken metrology to a new plane. «At a
rate of 750 points per second and with a
level of precision of less than 5µ, the Leitz
Reference has taken inspection to a new
dimension. The automatic inspection of
large parts or large units is both quick and
practical and offers unrivalled quality,»
explains the industrial director.
«By once again placing our trust in
Hexagon Metrology, Redex has reaffirmed
its decision to call on a company which is
capable of offering a real solution to a specific problem. Its top-quality commercial
service and specific help in developing
the inspection process were crucial to
our choice,» explains Pascal Vieugué. The
QUINDOS software, already a firm favourite with the Redex metrology laboratory
staff as a «complete tool», ensured that
the automation of the inspection process
became a reality. Mr Vieugué adds that
«the simple, automatic, direct and com-
prehensible report is a genuine measuring
tool».
The rapid expansion of the company and
the increasing demands in terms of threedimensional measurements encouraged
the group to acquire a third CMM. «The
DEA GLOBAL Performance 5.5.5. offers
Redex flexibility in terms of ‘self-service’
measurement resources. PC-DMIS Pro
facilitates automatic use which goes far
beyond the possibilities of simple manual
machines. Its digital, user-friendly controls
and small size support the choice of the
company to invest in qualitative resources which are perfectly adapted to our
needs. Hexagon Metrology is not simply a
supplier of measuring tools; it has become
a genuine partner. The challenges facing
Redex in the future, including continued
investment with regard to organisation,
the development of production standards using automated machines and an
increase in production, will require an
exceptional quality label and exceptional
CMMs» concludes Mr Vieugué.
