The Bulletin this year is being generously underwritten by Margie & Larry Kirsch
in memory of their parents, Marion & Alvin Kirsch and Ruth & Archie Linn
and Lancaster Streets, every third pew was embossed with
a Menorah, our Jewish candelabra, in tribute to and in
appreciation of Beth Emeth’s hospitality.
This year we are expanding our circle of fellowship to also
include Mt. Calvary Baptist Church (Pastor Charles Daniel)
with whom we had shared a particularly close relationship
for many years.

A Message From
Rabbi Shpeen
ED?@ED8JHAIJ;ECIJG;J>DEH:
Once again, Beth Emeth is honored to host this year the
Annual Thanksgiving Interfaith Service that brings together
Trinity United Methodist Church (Pastor Jeffrey Matthews),
the First Unitarian Universalist Society of Albany (Rev. Sam
Trumbore) and Westminster Presbyterian Church (Revs. Jim
Reisner and Frances Wattman Rosenau on Monday, November 23rd at 7:30 pm. Assemblymember Patricia Fahy, who
represents our 109th District, will be our guest speaker.
This service that began nearly one hundred years ago was
initiated as a way of expressing gratitude for the particular
fellowship we shared amongst the four congregations.
Unfortunately, the tradition had its origins in fire.
Westminster, Trinity and the Unitarian Society all sustained
a fire in their houses of worship; the Unitarian Society in the
1890s, Westminster in 1928 and Trinity in the 1930s.
Located then downtown and in proximity to the other
churches, Beth Emeth opened our doors so that those
congregations would have a place to worship while their
buildings were being restored. In fact, when Trinity United
Methodist Church completed their present structure on Lark
2
I strongly encourage and look forward to you joining us
that evening in welcoming our neighboring congregations
to this festive event and to sharing in the fellowship of the
Thanksgiving holiday season.

Kathy’s Comments

Comedian Billy Crystal’s book, Still Foolin’ ‘Em, is about aging
and, as you can imagine, quite funny. In his final chapter, he
discusses the prospect of death. It troubles him hugely, though he
rather likes going to visit his parents and aunts and uncles, all
buried in one plot in a New Jersey cemetery. “It's very comforting,”
he writes, “to see everyone in the same position they sat in at the
dining room table.”
One entire chapter is devoted to buying a cemetery plot for himself
and his wife. The cemetery administrator shows him around to find
just the right spot for his final resting place. He questions how
badly the cemetery administrator did on his SATs for his guidance
counselor to suggest to him that he should sell cemetery plots for
a living. (When I read this I became a little defensive…) Despite being
humorous, Crystal is doing something really great; he is talking
about something that few people like to discuss: death and dying.
Unfortunately, in my job, I often speak with families who have just
lost a loved one and have not made any plans. They are confused and
believe that they own family plots, when in reality they only have
reserved family plots that have not been paid for or they have made
no arrangements at all. Privilege of burial is not the same as ownership
of a plot. Ownership is not complete until the plot has been paid for
and a deed has been issued. If you have questions, please call me.

PLEASE have the hospital chaplain OR nurse be in touch

CONNECT – The core of our new approach is to make sure
that in every interaction you have with Beth Emeth you are
personally connecting with others. The board has committed
to knowing our congregants better and we want every
interaction you have at Beth Emeth to make you want to
come back for more.
BELONG – We want Beth Emeth to be a place where, when
you walk in the door, you feel as if you have returned home.
We want you to feel that you are attached to our community
and that your fellow congregants care about you.
ENGAGE – We will be making a concerted effort to reach
out to you one-on-one. As we have learned, it is much more
effective when someone asks you to “come along”. We are
going to find new ways to engage you including through our
new Sharing Shabbat dinner.
So we hope the initials “CBE” will take on a new meaning
for you. Of course, they will still mean Congregation Beth
Emeth and all the special things that Beth Emeth means as
our spiritual home. But now, we also hope that “CBE” will
make you think about how you can Connect, Belong and
Engage with the individuals in our Beth Emeth community.

Celebrating at our Donor Recognition Event.
With Appreciation

Over the past several years a significant number of CBE
members have generously stepped forward to voluntarily
pay above the standard level of Annual Commitment and/or
made Special Annual Gifts to fund specific programs. All of
these gifts have provided crucial help in maintaining
services and lessening the impact of decreased revenue
from Annual Commitment.
At our Annual Donor Recognition Reception on Oct 1st, the
lay leadership, clergy and professional staff had the
opportunity to recognize and thank these members, as well
as those members who have made outright or deferred
financial gifts to CBE’s endowment and other funds. We are
so grateful for their generosity and commitment! Sustaining
and enhancing the quality of Beth Emeth’s services requires
additional revenues. As Rabbi Shpeen eloquently stated that
evening:

The first weekend we served at October’s First Friday Dinner for the
congregation. That evening was followed by enjoying a not so quiet
evening of cards. Soon we were back to cooking and serving Erev
Shabbat Dinner for the Eric Yoffie Event. The following Friday,
Brotherhood was at it again to cook and serve Friday Night dinner
to welcome all of our new members to the congregation. Finally
we did get to relax with a tour and wine sampling at the Altamont
Winery. To finish October off we had a hearty crowd who enjoyed
our First Ever Sunday morning Football from London Breakfast
event!
Make sure that after you’ve completed your selections,
you go to your “Shopping Cart” and check out using
your credit card.
You should receive an e-mail confirming your

It has been a hopping month or so at Congregation Beth
Emeth! Immediately after summer camp ends, there’s a
roller coaster of activity at full speed. We prepare the school
for opening; have faculty and teen aide workshops, make
class assignments, check registration information, and the
excitement builds. Beyond the school, the fall lineup of
holidays comes rolling right in, in rapid succession. Rosh
Hashanah, then a little more than a week later, Yom Kippur.
Immediately following Yom Kippur we start construction on
our Sukkah and jump right into the harvest festival. Then we
celebrate the renewal of the Torah reading cycle with Simchat Torah and consecration. It’s a whirlwind and as exciting
as it all is, it is also exhausting. This year, to add a little more
to the chaos, I was in the midst of planning my older children’s B’nai Mitzvah which came right on the heels of
Sukkot, with Parashat Bereshit. I never anticipated how
much effort and focus planning such an event requires.
So the month of Tishrei was a little stressful, and not just for
me, the Jewish calendar really packs a lot into the 30 days
of the first month of the year. However, then we are given a
break, some time to catch our breath. The Hebrew month
that we are currently in is Cheshvan.

A complete lull - I do not think this is bitter at all and
welcome the tranquility of having some time to relax from
holiday planning - soon enough Chanukah will be upon us.
In the meantime, enjoy the “not bitterness” of Cheshvan.
Shara Siegfeld, Director of Education
Finally, I have some actual CBEYG news to report. Recently, we
had our annual kick-off CBEYG Barbecue! While it wasn’t much
of a barbecue (pizza was served) we did have a lot of fun. We started
off with a CBEYG tradition. That, of course, is our name game. Every
week, we play a name game, in which each person says his or her
name, school, grade, and then one other miscellaneous item that
varies from week to week. These topics cover a wide range, from
basic things such as what your favorite ice cream flavor is, to more
obscure thoughts, such as what your spirit animal is. We
consistently play a name game in order to learn more about our
fellow CBEYG-ers. Even when we know each other’s names, we
still gain something from this piece of our meeting. This past week,
we carried out another CBEYG tradition. This one, is playing kickball
at the opening barbecue. After the CBEYG Board talked a little bit
about what CBEYG is, we all went outside for a good old-fashioned
game of kickball. This game is played because it is a fun way for
everybody to interact with everybody else.

Global War on Morris. A Buckleyesque satire on the Bush-Cheney era - it's now
in development for a comedy series for cable. Israel is joined by MSNBC host
Chris Matthews to discuss the absurdities of Washington-as only insiders like these
two can!
