Message From The Chancellor
Dear Alumni and Friends of ECSU,
I am pleased to unveil the 2008 – 2009 Donor Report which
is a listing of gifts made to Elizabeth City State University by alumni
and friends. It is a pleasure to extend to each donor, on behalf of
the university, sincere gratitude for your continued support of and
interest in the programs at ECSU. Each gift is a treasure. We
appreciate the thoughtfulness of those who renewed their gift and
for those who were first time donors. You have embraced our
concept of Preserving our Legacy for future generations.
Your gifts will allow us to not only support existing programs, but pave the way
for generations to come. As a result of your generous giving, you have helped Elizabeth
City State University to be ranked 2nd among Top Public Baccalaureate Colleges in the
South and 11th among the nation’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities! Our
alumni participation rate increased, because of you; from 9% to 16%...remarkable!

Elizabeth City State University wishes to offer our sincere
appreciation to the following individuals and organizations, whose
philanthropic contributions have enabled us to advance our
university in providing much needed scholarship support to our
deserving students.
While every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of this
report – there may be errors that will go unnoticed…and uncorrected
if you do not make us aware. Please notify us of any errors, and we

The Alumni Participation Rate (APR) is the official count of how
many alumni give (regardless of contribution size) to their alma
mater in any given year. At any four-year institution the APR
conveys a significant message regarding the value that alumni
place on the education they received at the institution. It is a very
important indicator of an institution’s success and is commonly
referred to by corporations, foundations and wealthy individuals
when considering a charitable contribution to the university.

Working with the Foundation board the Foundation staff invested
scholarship funds prudently and realized the third consecutive
year of significant growth in the distribution of scholarship
monies to ECSU students. During the 2009 fiscal year scholarship
fund distribution increased by 22% from $625,000.00 to
$765,000.00. The additional $139,000.00 in available resources
was an increase over the previous years’ 21% distribution
increase.

The ECSU Foundation recently named the theater in the
Walter N. & Henrietta B. Ridley Student Center in honor
of a 1952 graduate (Elizabeth City State Teacher's
College), Mrs. Mary Albritton Douglas. Mrs. Douglas is
a native of North Carolina. ECSU Foundation and
university administrators recently unveiled the new
nameplate, The Mary Albritton Douglas Auditorium, on
the second floor of the ‘Ridley Student Center. In
addition to the bachelor of science earned here, Mrs.
Douglas earned a Master of Arts and a professional
diploma from Teachers College-Columbia University.
Further studies were done at Bank Street College and the
University of Puerto Rico. She was a student member of
Alpha Kappa Mu, Sigma Rho Sigma and later joined
Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. Douglass retired in
1985 after teaching 33 years in Maryland and New York.
After retiring she completed all the requirements for the
Certified Nursing Assisting program and currently
volunteers at St. Barnabas Hospital.
