As the 125th anniversary of the
university approaches (2016),
Dr. Glen Bowman, professor of
History, is working toward the
completion of a new book to
chronicle the developments of

our university. This valuable
resource will relay the
university's contributions to
public education.
"My goal is to write not only a general history of the
institution, but also some special profiles of some
important alumni, faculty members, staff members, and
supporters. There will be brief profiles interspersed
throughout the book. These "Profiles in Viking Pride", I
hope, will inspire young people and will touch the hearts of
those who love ECSU."
"Research for the book will come not only from the ECSU
Archives, but from outside archives-the State Archives,
Archives at North Carolina Central, as well as archives
outside of the state," Bowman said.

Contests launch in honor of 125th
birthday
ECSU turns 125 in
2016 and is reaching
into the community
we are calling on you
to help brand the
historic celebration.
Two contests, one for
the event's logo and
another for the tagline,
will launch on March 1 and run through Friday, April 12th.
The planning committee hopes area artists, graphic
designers and art students will submit logos that capture
the history and spirit of the university. Entries will be
narrowed down by the committee. Five finalists will be
selected and then displayed for voting on the university's
facebook page. The logo which recieves the largest
number of votes will be used as the official logo of the
celebration.
The tagline will serve another purpose; in addition to being
the "catch-phrase" for the event, it will set the theme of the
entire year-long celebration. The planning committee will
consider all entries and pick the tagline that both
represents the history of the university and sets a
memorable theme for the upcoming festivities.
Each winner will receive $125 cash, free tickets to all

VIKING ATHLETICS
Vikings wrap up impressive basketball
season
It's been a good season for Vikings basketball. The Lady
Vikings, under the direction of four-time CIAA Coach of the
Week Alico Dunk, move into the CIAA semi-finals in
Charlotte this week holding the Northern Division title.
During last week's victory over Bowie State, senior
Stephanie Harper hit a 25 point career milestone
immediately following the announcement that she and
teammate Shatara Jackson were named to the All-CIAA
team.
On the men's side, senior Angelo Sharpless will wrap up
his final season as the CIAA Player of the Year.
Sharpless, who was named the CIAA Rookie of the Year
in 2010, is now a two-time All-CIAA performer. The
Plymouth, NC, native was thrust into the national spotlight
last summer when a dunk at the Ben Wallace Pro-Am in
Richmond grabbed the #1 spot on ESPN SportsCenter's
Top Ten:

Sharpless is one of 16 players in the running to be voted
as the State Farm Darkhorse Dunker. The winner will
compete in the 2013 State Farm College Slam Dunk & 3-

Marrow completes fellowship in
Germany
PICTURE OF
THE MONTH
Keith Marrow has a different
perspective on the role of
college than he had as a
freshman.
Like most freshmen, he noted
the classes he would have to
complete in order to earn his
bachelor's degree in Aviation
Science from Elizabeth City
State University. He later also made room in his schedule

for extracurricular activities, including membership in
Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. One day while scanning a
bulletin board on campus, he saw an advertisement for the
Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young
Professionals. This fellowship, funded by the German
Bundestag and U.S. Congress, annually provides 75
American and 75 German young professionals the
opportunity to spend one year in the other's country,
studying, working and living with hosts in a cultural
immersion program.
Marrow was accepted and served as what the agency
describes as a Junior Ambassador. It was his first trip

abroad for an extended period. It was also the turning point
of his view of college as simply a slate of courses
completed on a small, northeastern North Carolina
campus.

Leonard Carmichael inducted into the
CIAA Hall of Fame
Leonard Carmichael, a guard
for the 1968-1969
championship Vikings
basketball team, is elated
about his induction into the
2013 Class of the CIAA
McLendon Hall of Fame. He
was one of six individuals and
one team slated for the March
SHARE
1st induction in Charlotte, N.C.
The induction ceremony caps Carmichael's journey to the
South that began when he was a 20-year-old Army
veteran from Trenton, N.J. A friend, Marvin Trotman from
nearby Princeton, N.J., encouraged Carmichael to enroll
at what was then Elizabeth City State Teacher's College.
Trotman liked the university so much that he assured
Carmichael he, too, could achieve there. Carmichael was
reluctant but considered the suggestion.
