Longboats prepare for the attack during filming of the History Channel series ‘Vikings’ on Blessington Lake
VISITORS to picturesque Blessington Lake in Co Wicklow were stunned to see the shores strewn with bloodied
and bruised corpses and marauding Vikings crossing the water in longboats.
Any shock was short-lived, however, as it became clear that filming was under way for the third series of History
Channel's period drama 'Vikings'.
Created by Michael Hirst – the man behind hit show 'The Tudors' – the Norse drama pulled in 8.3 million viewers
in the United States for its first episode.
Former Calvin Klein underwear model Travis Fimmel plays the lead role of Ragnar Lothbrok in the series and was
seen enjoying a cigarette between takes.
All three series of 'Vikings' have been shot on location in Wicklow.
Irish actors including Gabriel Byrne, John Kavanagh, David Pearse, Sarah Greene and Moe Dunford have all
appeared in the series.

HIT TV series Vikings looks set to provide a further boost for Co Wicklow next year, after programme chiefs
indicated a fourth season of the History Channel drama was on the cards.
Film crews from the Canadian-Irish co-production finished shooting the third series on location in some of the
Garden County's most scenic spots earlier this month.
But series producer Morgan O'Sullivan hinted that plans are already in place to film a fourth series.
He said: "It was kind of more challenging this year when compared to other years - everything was bigger in terms
of scale and size.
"We had to construct a huge build of Paris, as the Vikings attack Paris in this season and that was tough work.
"But every year we are trying to get bigger and better to compete with what's out there, and this shoot went
exceedingly well. We are all very chuffed with it - bring on season four."
The first three series of Vikings have been shot mainly in Co Wicklow's Ashford Studios, with outdoor filming
taking place at Luggala and the Poulaphouca Reservoir.
The drama - which starred Irish A-lister Gabriel Byrne in the first season - focuses on mythological Viking warrior
Ragnar Lothbrok, played by Travis Fimmel, as he wages war and aims to conquer new lands.
