By Kendyl Drummond Crowds gathered at Lansdowne Park in Blenheim on Sunday for the Makos match against Counties-Manukau where Makos mid-fielder Michael Wells had his first start of the season. The Riwaka resident has been out for six weeks due to a shoulder injury, but was pleased to be able to play his first start in front of such a massive crowd with many local supporters. Unfortunately, it was the second loss of the season as the Makos were defeated by Counties-Manukau 21-16. They are still in for the semi-final this weekend at Trafalgar Park against Canterbury, and Michael says he has high hopes for his team. “We’re playing our big brothers but we can do it. We beat them a few weeks ago so we can do it again. The boys have been playing well so I think we will have the win.” The Tasman Womens team played as a curtain-raiser for the Makos, and Motueka player Tallulah Tuffery said it was great experience playing in front of such a massive crowd. “It was pretty cool. There was heaps of support, especially from Motueka locals”. This is only Tallulah’s second season playing rugby, so she was stoked to make it into the Tasman Womens team, alongside fellow Motueka player Sophie Pegram. The team is aiming at building up their skill level to be able to make it into a national womens competition grade next season. “It’s about promoting womens rugby and creating an interest. We were all just put together so we haven’t had much time to bond yet but we have high hopes for next season”. The curtain-raiser saw the Tasman Womens team go up against Canterbury Metro, the best secondary Tasman Makos mid-fielder Michael Wells of Riwaka and Tasman Womens school womens team in Canterbury, Tallulah Tuffery of Motueka after their matches in Blenheim on Sunday. where Tasman was defeated 32-10. Dinghy sailing on Motueka Inlet got off to a good start last Saturday, with ideal winds and tide for two races. A good variety of boats – Laser, Phase 2, Sunburst, and a John Wellsford design – raced from the Saltwater Baths up to Motueka Quay and back, following a zigzag course around buoys laid for the occasion. The Phase 2, skippered by Ross Loveridge, had the edge for speed, but Lloyd Knowles was close behind in his Laser – no doubt Lloyd’s local knowledge of tidal currents and wind patterns came in handy. The three Sunbursts had some interesting racing, with experience in spinnaker handling paying off for Spirit Wind, skippered by Jill Loveridge and crewed by Isobel Mosley. Race Officer Paul Mosley, from the Motueka Yacht & Cruising Club, said that he was particularly pleased that several non-members took part, and hoped that others would come along to future events. The next race day will be on 25 October, with a briefing at 11:15am at the Saltwater Baths.
