Babies and toddlers love to hear their caregiver’s voice, and reading together is a great way to spend time bonding. Reading to a child also promotes listening, memory and vocabulary skills, language development as well as stimulates the imagination and instills a love of books and learning. The Rubber Ducky Club is the perfect opportunity for caregivers to get into the habit of reading with their child, have fun and learn new ways to encourage early literacy. • The Summer Reading Program is open to all, no library card is required. • Beginning Monday, June 1, caregivers can get their children started on this pre-reader program by picking up a log from Naperville Public Library or printing one from our website: naperville.READsquared.com • Each child can complete a Rubber Ducky reading log with 12 suggested early literacy activities. • After completing these activities together, the child will be eligible for incentive prizes. • The last day to complete a reading log and receive prizes is Aug. 15. • • • • 4 Read for the Win – For 3-years-old through 5th grade: The Summer Reading Program is open to all, no library card is required. Children from age 3 through those entering 5th grade can receive a reading log either through their school, at the library or by printing from the library’s website: naperville.READsquared.com Enjoy reading, win prizes and visit the library for fun experiential prizes. The last day to complete a reading log and receive prizes is Aug. 15. Read for the Win – For Teens (6th through 12th grades) and Adults: • The Summer Reading Program is open to all, no library card required. • Teens and adults can participate by visiting the library’s Summer Reading Program page on the website, selecting the teen or adult program, printing a log and entering book titles online, naperville.READsquared.com • Participants can earn prizes and entries into a drawing at the end of the program by reading or listening to books. • Once the log has been completed and book titles have been entered online, participants should come to the library to receive their prize. • The last day to complete a reading log and receive prizes is Aug. 15. In addition, staff members will present strategies to enhance early learning opportunities at home. At least one parent or adult caregiver is required to accompany children to these funfilled programs. RIVERWALK STORYTIMES Staff will present this popular Riverwalk program, which will include stories, songs and a puppet show. Participants can bring a meal or snack. In the event of inclement weather, this event will be canceled. (The Wednesday lunchtime program will be a repeat of the Tuesday evening program.) These programs are presented in partnership with Naperville Park District. Depending on attendance, readers may be placed in a group. Children may bring a book or choose one from the library. All participants must be independent readers. Kids entering 1st through 5th grades can get a free ticket to read with a therapy/canine good citizen dog and owner team starting at 11 a.m. the day of the program. These special dogs are all ears for a good story. Parents and siblings are invited to meet the dogs at the conclusion of the program. No registration required. This program is presented in partnership with Naperville Area Humane Society, PAWSitive Therapy Troupe/Pets for Vets, Two Bostons and Naperville Public Library. Program Room Saturday, June 11, 18 & 25 Saturday, July 9, 16 & 23 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. *CS FIRST CLUB: CODING SERIES YOGA FOR KIDS Get ready to move, bend and stretch while reading fun yoga stories and acting out favorite animal poses. This interactive program will feature stories, songs and simple poses to introduce kids to the world of yoga. Attendees should wear comfortable clothing and bring their own mat or towel. Program is limited to 15 children ages 3 – 7 years old. CS First is an entry-level computer science program created by Google. It aims to empower children to create with technology and tell their own stories through hands-on computer programming activities. Children in 4th through 6th grades can learn and improve problem-solving and logic proficiencies as they study the visual programming language Scratch. *Program requires advanced registration, and participants must attend the entire series of four sessions. READ FOR THE WIN WITH JEANIE B! CHILDREN’S PROGRAMS Winners jump, winners run, winners dance and have fun! Winners play by the rules, winners read and stay in school! Winners help one another! Set it all to music, Read for the Win is therapeutic! Join one of Chicagoland’s best children’s musicians as she brings this year’s summer reading theme, Read for the Win!, to life with her upbeat show, jam-packed with dancing, sing-a-longs and original interactive music for all. DuPage Children’s Museum is taking exhibits on the road! The museum’s early learning specialist and community access coordinator will provide play facilitation techniques utilizing portable versions of full-sized exhibits. In addition, library staff will demonstrate the power of play through storytimes during this drop-in program, which is limited to 30 attendees. This program is presented in partnership with DuPage Children’s Museum. These engaging programs will include demonstrations and activities to help students develop a deeper understanding of their world as it relates to science. Meeting Room A/B Thursday, June 23 8 LET THE GAMES BEGIN: THE ORIGIN OF SPORTS During this fun-filled program, ancient athlete “Discus Meter” will lead kids through time to discover the beginning of some of today’s most enjoyable pastimes. The Olympic Games, baseball, football, basketball, ice-skating and tennis will all be on the audience’s scorecard. This program is presented by Histories for Kids, Inc. Meeting Room A/B Friday, July 8 2 – 2:45 p.m. Program Room Friday, July 15 2 – 2:45 p.m. *SIGN AND PLAY WITH BABY Learn to communicate with babies using sign language. This three-week program provides a fun environment for babies and their caregivers to learn the basics of sign language. Each week, a new theme will be introduced using stimulating activities, books, songs and play. For children 8 – 23 months old. *Program requires advanced registration and is limited to 12 babies per program. Physics of Sports 4 – 5 p.m. (For 4th – 8th Grades) Children’s Storyroom Monday, July 11 Monday, July 18 Monday, July 25 6:30 – 7 p.m. Mealtime Bedtime Animals StoryWalk® Enjoy a breath of fresh air and take a stroll with the family during StoryWalk®, an event that combines the benefits of literacy, physical fitness and family fun. Pages from a featured picture book will be posted along the designated path, and participants can read and walk at their own pace. At the end of the StoryWalk®, DuPage Children’s Museum will have portable versions of their educational exhibits as well as refreshments. These programs are presented in partnership with Naperville Public Library, DuPage Children’s Museum and Naperville Park District. Knoch Knolls Nature Center Saturday, July 16 9 a.m. – noon ‘HARRY POTTER’ BOOK RELEASE PARTY It’s coming! The next story in the “Harry Potter” series, “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Parts I & II” is set to be released July 31. Harry Potter fans of all ages are invited to the Nichols Library on July 30 for activities, magic and fun concluding with the library’s book release parade at midnight. Check the library’s website for updates and party details. RHYME TIME PARTY It is time to rhyme! Rhymes are a great way to build early literacy skills. Enjoy silly stories, rhyming games and a craft that is sure to be fun for everyone! Meet Vladimir Cashewninski, athlete and champion badminton player, as he prepares to compete in the most important game of his life. On the night before his big day, he has an enthralling dream that takes him to ancient Greece where he teams up with audience members to explore the first Olympic Games. This program is presented by Traveling Lantern Theatre Company. Children will decorate their own cars from cardboard boxes, and then park in designated spaces in front of the screen to watch a short movie. For children ages 5 to 7 years old. *Program requires advanced registration and is limited to 20 children. Kids can discover the wonder of play and innovation in a historical setting. This program will take place at Naper Settlement and requires a fee for those that are not Naperville residents or members of Naper Settlement. $12/adult, $10/senior (62+), $8/youth (4-12). Webster St. Sunday, Aug. 14 1 – 4 p.m. 9 YAY FOR YA!: AN ONLINE GOODREADS BOOK CLUB Lovers of YA literature can sign up for the library’s online Goodreads book club. Each month, a new book will be selected, and readers can discuss it online through the participant’s Goodreads account. Request to join the group “Yay for YA!: An Online Book Club” on Goodreads.com, or email teen librarian Alison Colman at acolman@naperville-lib. org. A new book is posted on the first day of every month, and participants will have the entire month to read it and discuss. TEEN PROGRAMS TEEN MOVIE SERIES ‘HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE’ (PG-13) Potter-Mania is back at the library this summer with a showing of the fourth “Harry Potter” film, “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.” Watch Harry compete in the Triwizard Tournament and get excited for all the new Harry Potter fun to come. Program Room Friday, July 29 1:30 – 4 p.m. TEEN INTEREST CLUBS ANIME CLUB Anime fans can enjoy some Japanese snacks, wear cosplay and chat about Japanese animation. Meet at the field next to the west end of the library. Bookworms can discuss books they have recently read, are currently reading or even old-time favorites. Pizza will be provided to fuel the conversation. 10 West of Nichols Library 6 – 6:45 p.m. Monday, June 27 Monday, July 25 Monday, Aug. 22 TEEN: DO-IT-YOURSELF (CRAFT SERIES) *HOW PINTERESTING Visit the library to create an interesting Pinterest craft! Stop by the upper level adult services desk to see an example of the Pinterest crafts the group will make the week before each program. *Program requires advanced registration and is limited to 20 teen participants. Nomura Room C 2 – 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 8 Wednesday, Aug. 10 *SCREEN-PRINTING BASICS Teens will learn basic screen-printing techniques using the library’s Cameo Silhouette machines to create and cut out designs. A small tote bag for each participant, which is perfect for carrying a summer reading book haul from the library, will be provided. Bring some ideas for a simple image to screenprint. *Program requires advanced registration and is limited to 12 teen participants. Program Room Friday, June 10 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. Nomura Room C Wednesday, Aug. 17 2 – 4 p.m. *SHARPIE TIE-DYE T-SHIRTS Create unique t-shirt designs using permanent markers, rubbing alcohol and rubber bands. Participants are asked to bring a white cotton T-shirt and wear clothes they don’t mind getting dirty. *Program requires advanced registration and is limited to 20 teen participants.
