Welcome to Art in the Park 2013!
The Boulder City Hospital Foundation is pleased to host the 51st annual
Art in the Park! Art in the Park is a huge tradition in our community
and Southern Nevada. This year’s event features more than 300 artists, a
cornucopia of delectable food offerings and a State of the Art Health Fair.
Did you know that the funds raised through Art in the Park help Boulder City
Hospital continue to provide essential healthcare services to our community
and visitors? After operating for more than 58 years, Boulder City Hospital
remains committed to providing high quality personalized healthcare.
Throughout our history, we have remained true to the idea of providing exceptional patient
services. From our Emergency Room and Critical Care services, to our Long Term Care program
and Home Health program, we continually look to the future making the necessary investments
to keep the Hospital up-to-date with the latest technology in providing quality healthcare to our
community.
We are deeply committed to the community and are fully focused on the services we provide. In
order to continue to excel, Boulder City Hospital constantly strives to remain on the forefront
of quality and safety by maintaining a state of the art facility, operating efficiently and pursuing
continual improvement.
The medical staff and support personnel are more than just highly educated professionals; they are
compassionate care givers. With over 200 physicians, representing nearly 26 specialties, we are the

Southwest’s Largest Juried Outdoor
Art Festival is a Time-Honored
Boulder City Tradition
F
or many Southern Nevadans,
a treasured indication that Fall
is officially on the way appears as
temperatures start to lower, days get a
bit shorter and the beloved Boulder City
Art in the Park makes its appearance
the first weekend of October. Not only
is it an art lovers dream come true, it’s
the 51st Anniversary of this signature
fund-raising event by the Boulder City
Hospital Foundation with all proceeds
going directly to the hospital and
underlines its mission to provide the
community with quality health care close
to home.
The annual event, which draws
up to 100,000 visitors, is comprised of
a varied and exciting range of artists,
craftsmen, culinary delights and live
entertainment. It is widely recognized as
the largest outdoor juried art festival in
the Southwest! This year’s event features
hundreds of artisans spread throughout
the heart of Boulder city amongst its
four beautiful parks. It’s simply amazing
that the Boulder City community has
spent the past half century ensuring its
residents are provided with superior
health care and it all started from humble
beginnings in 1962.
Reaching way back to the 1930’s
when Hoover Dam was a project guided
by the WPA, thousands of workers
descended upon the area to build one
of the major marvels of the world at the

time. Due to the strenuous (and often
times dangerous) work involved, the
Government set up a facility to treat the
workers and their families associated
with the project.
As the early 50’s rolled around,
and with the project long done, it was
decided by the government to close
the facility. When the residents of this
quaint, beautiful town heard the news
it sent them into a grassroots mode
with the sole aim of saving the Hospital
and establishing a non-profit resource
for its residents. Through hard work
and innovative thinking the Women’s
Hospital Auxiliary organized the first
Art in the Park event in 1962 in Ralph
and Sarah Denton’s back yard to go
along with other fund raising events held
throughout the year.
As one of the city’s largest events,
Art in the Park wouldn’t be successful
without the combined efforts of
members of our communities. It is the
hard work of the Hospital Auxiliary,
Hospital staff, Boulder City Chamber
of Commerce, Boulder City Police and
Fire Departments, Boulder City Parks
and Recreation and the City of Boulder
City, who make this festival successful.
Everyone who can help comes out to
set up the area days before the show.
Countless hours of setting up booths,
registering hundreds of artist and being
sure that every little detail is covered
are managed by volunteers from in and
around the community.
Fine and traditional art, fine and
traditional crafts can all be found at
this spectacular event. Guests shop
till they drop then gain refreshment
at any number of food and beverage
booths. Art in the Park always features
a variety of food choices from hot dogs,
hamburgers, roasted corn on the cob,
barbecue sandwiches, Italian, Mexican,
Greek, Thai and Chinese fare. And then
the desserts and treats… funnel cakes,
kettle corn, roasted nuts, fruity bars,
frozen treats and more.
Entertainment is a standard at
Art in the Park. While strolling the
parks and viewing artist works, guests
are welcomed to relax in the shade at
Bicentennial Park with refreshments
while enjoying the stage entertainment
from Boulder City’s traditional gazebo
setting.
Since the inception of the festival
every talented artist has donated one
original piece to the Art in the Park raffle.
That tradition continues today, making
every raffle prize a “hot treasure!” Raffle
tickets are available at the event booth at
the west end of Bicentennial Park. Raffle
winners will be notified by phone and
may pick up their prizes at the event or
at the Boulder City Hospital Foundation
office.

Israeli-born Tamir began creating art
from the time she was able to hold a
pencil. “I just liked to doodle and I
always knew that I wanted to be an
artist. There was no question that this
was what I loved to do.” Choosing oil
as her medium, Tamir initially painted
in a variety of styles, finding inspiration
in the masters such as Michelangelo, de
Vinci, and van Gogh. “I never took an
art class. I didn’t like that.”
There was no doubt that Tamir’s works
of art appealed to the public when she
was quite young, “I started selling my
work when I was 12. Our housekeeper
took some of my sketches to the nextdoor gallery and (she) used to sell them
for me. This way I had some spending
money.” Unfortunately, Tamir’s father
did not share her belief that creating art
could be a way to earn a viable living.
“As time went by, my father said ‘you
better get a profession where you can
make money otherwise I will find you
in the gutter.’ He was Jewish, but of
German descent. He was very practical
and he made sure I had a profession,
which was drafting. I was a drafter for
high-rise buildings. Not that it was
something I wanted to do, but I had
a profession.” But she never stopped
painting.
A providential visit to New York’s
Metropolitan Museum of Art when
Tamir was 21 introduced her to the
work of Spanish Surrealist, Salvador
Dali. That very night Tamir dreamed
of a child tied to a balloon and
grasping her parent’s hands, which she
immediately sketched. It was her first
piece of Surrealism art and she knew
she had “crossed into the world of
Surrealism for good.” Tamir’s surreal
works appeals to “people who are open
minded, intuitive and like to dream.”
After becoming an established artist
in Israel in her 20’s, Tamir immigrated
to the United States along with her
husband and business manager, Eli, and
their three daughters. Art critics raved
about her work and she was strongly
encouraged by other members of the
art community to go on the road and
exhibit her work at shows. With her
hands full creating works of art and
raising three small children, she enlisted
the help of her husband. “I sent my
husband to the art shows. He would go
to an art show and come home emptyhanded. Everything started rolling from
there.”
Tamir and her family returned to her
native Israel where she opened her
own very successful gallery. After ten
years, she and her family returned to
the United States, but too much time
had passed since her previous success
as an artist here. She had to “start all
the way from scratch”. Unfortunately,
Tamir continues, “Having to send three
teenagers to college and having to pay
bills, I stopped exhibiting and went
back to my profession of drafting, so my
father’s prophecy (of ending up in the
gutter) wouldn’t come true.” Still, she
never stopped painting
in a way that seemed would work as a
business model. I was in charge of the
art and he was in charge of the business
and it worked. Today I’m considered to
be a pretty well-known artist. I have a
huge, loyal fan club and I enjoy doing
what I do best.”
In 2011 Tamir published a lavishly
illustrated hardbound retrospective
memorializing the works of her 40-year
career. ‘The Surreal World of Ora Tamir’
is available at her booth in Art in the
Park (Booth’s 199 & 200) and through
her website, www.orasart.com.
Tamir paints in solitude, without sounds
or distractions. Of this practice, Tamir
says, “My art comes from an inner place
which might be called ‘channeling’ or
maybe just ‘meditation’. I never ask
where it comes from or how it comes
from. I just do it. I learned to listen to
my inner voice. I paint by soul, never
bending to trends or criticism.”
During Tamir’s painting sessions, stories
are created and images come to life as
each piece evolves and changes until
“it feels right”. A long labor of love,
completing an original painting takes
Tamir anywhere from a month, to
several years, “The painting is finished
when it tells me that we have arrived.”
In 1997 Tamir returned to the art
scene, promoting and publishing
her mesmerizing Surrealistic works,
receiving extensive press and
representation by several galleries, and
became well-received internationally.
“After everyone graduated from college,
I decided to go back and show my work
again. My husband set up the business

Boulder City Hospital Expanding
to Serve You Better
B
oulder City Hospital is moving
closer to its goal of becoming a
full-service “age in place” facility with
major expansion and renovation now
underway that will better serve our
growing senior population while still
caring for the basic health needs of
Boulder City residents and our valued
visitors.
that Boulder City Hospital is known for
in a familiar and friendly hometown
setting.
During construction, the Hospital
remains committed to serving the
health care needs of our community,
providing 24-hour emergency care,
medical surgical and ICU care,
skilled nursing, and a full array of
ancillary services.
Emergency Services
In an emergency situation,
time is of the essence. The
Hospital provides quality
emergency care with a short
wait time. Prompt, courteous,
personal and professional care is
the cornerstone of our service.
A not-forprofit acute care critical access hospital
and skilled nursing facility, the Hospital
has achieved the highest scores on all
Quality of Care measures for rural
hospitals in Nevada while fulfilling
its mission to provide high quality
health care services in a small town
environment.
Our hospital also ranks best in
readmission rates, another major quality
indicator that means our patients are
not discharged until they are well. But
the most important grade comes from
our patients themselves, who give
the Hospital an A+ (98%) in patient
satisfaction.
Thanks to a loan from USDA
Rural Development, the Hospital will
be able to serve even more satisfied
patients. The renovation and expansion
project will provide a state-of-the-art
surgical center, expanded emergency
department, enhanced services for
physical and occupational therapy and
acute inpatient rehab. A brand new
geriatric-psychiatric care unit is also
under construction to fill the critical
need of elder care for mental health.
These additional services will
continue to provide individualized care
16
Experienced emergency
room physicians and advanced cardiac
life support certified nurses have
the ability to handle life threatening
situations arising from sudden onset
of illness, accident or injury. The
Emergency Care Facility is open 24
hours a day, seven days a week.
Rehabilitation and Physical Therapy
Boulder City Hospital’s outpatient
therapy clinic offers physical and
occupational therapy services. Friendly,
caring and attentive staff provide
individualized exercise programs and
therapeutic plans for: neck and back
injury; shoulder and arm pain; hand
and wrist pain; leg, hip, knee, ankle and
foot pain; post-surgical rehabilitation;
neurological conditions; balance and
gait impairments; TMJ and wound care.
Laboratory Services
Boulder City Hospital’s clinical
laboratory’s state of the art in-patient
and out-patient services include:
chemistry (electrolytes, liver and kidney
panels, lipid panels); hematology;
coagulation test; transfusion service;
thyroid tests and PSA.
Skilled Nursing Facility
It’s no wonder our Long Term
Care residents have won the prestigious
Oldest Seniors Award for five years
in a row at the “90-plus Banquet.”
The award-winning longevity of our
residents can partly be attributed to the
compassionate and warm environment
they enjoy.
The Hospital’s team of
professionals is dedicated to providing
quality of life in a home-like
atmosphere. The care team consists
of your physician, registered dietitian,
social worker, activities director, RN’s,
LPN’s and certified nursing assistants.
Other available services include:
physical therapy, occupational
therapy, speech therapy, respiratory
therapy, pharmacy and psychologist
consultations.
Daily activities are varied and
geared towards meeting the functional
and cognitive levels of all the residents.
The facility is approved for Medicare,
Medicaid, Blue Cross/Blue Shield and
most private insurances.
Home Health Agency
Boulder City Hospital’s Home
Health Agency is staffed by caring,
qualified professionals working
together to provide services to
enhance rehabilitation, recovery
and independence in the comfort of
one’s own home. Our highly trained
professionals are qualified to provide
the following services: skilled nursing;
physical, occupational and speech
therapy; medical social worker and
home health aide.
Improving the lives of Southern Nevadans
by building a stronger community through
information, insights and inspiration.
Mental Health: Partial
Hospitalization Program
Our Partial Hospitalization
Program (PHP) for adults meets the
needs of people who are able to remain
in the community but require additional
emotional support. The program
provides structured and intensive
psychiatric care five days a week.
The PHP is staffed by a multidisciplinary team that includes
psychiatrists, clinical psychologists,
social workers, and psychiatric nurses.
